Born on this day 104 years ago: incomparably sultry torch singer Peggy Lee (Norma Deloris Egstrom, 26 May 1920 - 21 January 2002). As her biographer James Gavin writes in the essential Is That All There Is? The Strange Life of Peggy Lee (2015), Lee conveyed maximum emotional (and erotic) impact with little more than a languid murmur: "a tough purr that kicked open the bedroom door." “Those who saw her at New York’s Basin Street East or the Copacabana in the 60s know firsthand the Peggy Lee of legend: a seductive blonde who controlled the stage like a puppeteer,” Gavin continues. “Her throaty voice floated on a wisp of breath yet could drive a whole orchestra. Characters materialized one by one - a barroom vamp on the make, an indomitable housewife, a faded woman exposing her loneliness.” This bewitching artistry is captured in one of my all-time favourite Lee tracks: the eerie “The Case of MJ” from her 1975 album Mirrors. The lyrics offer the alienated inner monologue and mood swings of an institutionalized mentally ill woman, with Lee alternating between numb childlike compliance (“Mary Jane's been a good girl today / She ate all her peas / She said, "thank you" and "please" / And she didn't mess up her pretty white dress”) and stabs at defiance (“Mary Jane tried to run away / Mary Jane has been naughty today …”) while the music gradually turns as tense as any horror movie soundtrack. Pictured: Peter Hujar’s portrait of the diva in 1974.

Peggy Lee: Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown, North Dakota 1972 Remastered CD-New $39.99
Peggy Lee returns to her roots, at least by name and location, with Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown, North Dakota, reminding fans of the name and place on her birth certificate. The album is credited as “produced & conceived by Tom Catalano.” Maybe Catalano‘s conception was the LP title. If he also chose the songs and the arranger/conductor, he didn’t really do much different from recent…

21 de janeiro
Bom dia a todos!...
Neste dia:
Nome artístico de Norma Deloris Egstrom, foi uma cantora de jazz tradicional estadunidense conhecida por interpretar as canções "Is That All There Is?", "Fever" e “Johnny Guitar”.
Confira algumas frases do livro 1984:

Norma Egstrom (Peggy Lee) was born in Jamestown, North Dakota on May 26, 1920. Her mother died when Norma was four, and she had a difficult relationship with her stepmother. She taught herself how to sing by listening to the radio. She made her radio debut at the age of 14.
She had her big break in 1941, when the vocal group she was working with started making appearances at a Chicago club. Caught the attention of Benny Goodman as his regular vocalist was leaving the band. A few days after they recorded and the popular "Elmer's tune." They release more songs that year and several were successful. She left the band in 1943 when she married the band's bassist, Dave Barbour.
A year after their marriage she returned to her music career. She returned as part of an all-star jazz team, but in 1945 she was signed to Capitol Records as a solo artist. Her first single "Waiting for the Train to Come In" hit the charts. She continued to be successful on the charts during the late 1940's. Many of her songs were made with Barbour.
Switching to Decca in 1952, scored with the single "Lover." After 5 years she returned to Capitol where she distinguished herself through a variety of music. Her marriage with Barbour was ended by his problems with alcoholism, although they remained good friends until his death.
Her versatile range in music proved to come in handy as she recorded contemporary music until 1972 "Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown, North Dakota" returned her to her roots. That was her last record under Capitol and she still recorded for other labels. She retired in the early 1980's. Returned to business in 1988 and recorded two LP's. Her last "Moments like These" was recorded in 1992. Her voice was silenced after a stroke in 1998 and she died at home from a stroke on January 21, 2002.
