The second coffee painting I ever did was of Nori the Dwarf. I loved painting the intricate hair, and the contrasting leather and suede of the clothes, but I had yet to find the method I now use with light and contrast.

I gifted the original painting to Jed Brophy, who played Nori in the hobbit trilogy. A year later, we met again at another convention, and ended up on the same plane from Sweden to London for the red carpet premiere of Battle of the Five Armies. Afterwards, I went straight to New Zealand for a few weeks of Hobbity goodness, and managed to run into him again by chance while in Wellington 😅

He sure seems to be a big Beecake fan, but who can blame him? 😂

I've always wondered, beyond the idea that Smaug doesn't know Bilbo's scent and therefore the hobbit can wander around the castle undisturbed "without being noticed", why Thorin's company needed a burglar if they already have Nori who is very expert in theft and burglary?

Yet another sketchbook spread, this time with more dwarves! Man its so sad that theyve decided to get rid of Dwalin's mohawk, he looks so cool with it! I really like this headcannon(?) dynamic between Nori and Dwalin in which he is a guard and constantly chases after Nori for his crimes so i sorta tried to incorporate that into the illustration. Balin was such a delight to draw, he wouldve LOVED gramophones.
