This ol’ gal keeps me moving. Just turned 387,800 miles. Looks pretty good for a ten year old vehicle, too (most folks are amazed when I tell how old and how many miles) and so far has been the most dependable vehicle I’ve ever owned, winter or summer. . This short trip, a few hundred miles, so far is registering 20.2mpg (swipe for pic) on the DIC, even hauling my heavily-loaded trailer, though I know the real mileage is more likely a bit less. I’ll see what it averages over the next few fill-ups. Hard to figure this time of year, traffic being what it is and more stop-n-go on the highways and a lot more construction zone slow-downs. Ready for the Desert . Filled up my fresh water tank with twenty-two gallons in Study Butte for $2.20. Bought groceries and supplies in Fort Davis yesterday. Got a sixer of Lone Star today in Terlingua, to add to the Shiner I already have. . Have a new buddy riding down on his bike from Las Cruces NM to join me camping for the night, maybe two, so am all set for a few days. . It is 72F/22C with almost no breeze and few clouds here today down on the border. Front coming through tonight and daytime temps will drop to freezing tonight with winds around 10-15mph/16-24kmh Tomorrow’s high will be around 53F/12C with a bit less wind. This ol’ girl gets me just about everywhere I’ve ever wanted to go... . with plenty of torque and high clearance, but I keep dreaming of having 4wd. . Then I’ll really get back further and further into the willy-wacks and get into all sorts of trouble for being even less in touch with folks. . #noservicenoproblem is a situation I’ve always appreciated and these days I do it more and more by choice. . I’d like to paint the van and trailer the same color, too. I’m thinking the color of fabric in my @Roofnest Eagle would look great, as well as not be a color like Desert Sand that everyone and their mother seems to have. . What do you think, a light, sort of dusty, non-minty green? Swipe for the tent fabric color. . I can handle the paint jobs myself if I need to, and am sure I’d do a great job (if I had a good indoor place to set up for awhile) but a 4wd conversion is beyond my skill set. . There’s only one place I know of with good, solid, experience converting GMC’s of this vintage and mileage, @sportsmanlighttruck and their Clydesdale 4wd. They’ve been doing very successful GMC van conversions for forest service vehicles and ambulances. Rugged use vehicles. . I’ll be writing them soon to continue a conversation I started long time ago, to see what their schedule is like.
