Nneka - Soul Is Heavy
Loved this song so much when it came out. Nneka speaking to truth to power about Nigeria’s history, ongoing extraction of the country’s resources and destruction of its environment by multinationals like Shell.

Nneka
https://www.unadonnalgiorno.it/nneka/
Tumblr media

No Longer At Ease, Nneka Egbuna’s sophomore album, continues her lyrical war on injustice. She includes more vocals in her native Pidgin, all in her exceptional, breathy voice, lending a truly powerful vibe to the album.
Her success with the single Heartbeat, and subsequent box single release, which includes remixes by the likes of Chase & Status (with the coolest fucking remint name: “We Just Bought A Guitar Remix), Koolkojax, and Crada, plus collabs with Nas, brought Egbuna to the North American stage, and this is when I first heard her unmistakeable voice. I immediately fell in love. The lyrics are astounding, “You have goals to achieve / but the roads you take are broad and heartless / The wounds you make, you’re not aware / You throw stones / Can’t you see that I am human? I am breathing, but you don’t give a damn,” they give me chills. And the way she pumps her breath during the chorus leaves you breathless.
Tumblr media
More amazing lyrics:
Suffri: “Una dey talk of ur elections, Nigerians, Nigerians / We dey talk of the redemptions, naija, naija / We dey talk of resolutions, oya / Tell me where the solution because nothing dey change.”
Gypsy: “Will u recognize ur soul is naked before u / Will u hide ur own sin when u know the truth / Will u drown in ur own tears and self destruct / Will u break the rules and be concerned? // No but we will wonder for the rest of our lives / Will we break free from our imprisoned minds?”
Streets Lack Love: “For nearly 60 years in Nigeria / People have been suffering from gas flaring, and pollution / Because of big oil extraction companies such as Shell, Chevron, NNPC” (I love how she calls them the fuck out by name!) “The Niger Delta, the Warri, and the Ogoni people have been pleading for a change / They have been fighting for justice / But the companies, Europe and Nigerian government do not seam to care / Do not seam to be bothered, they can’t be bothered.”
From Africa 4 U: (this one is especially folksy in rhythm) “Africa no one else to go save you but you / It’s time to arise / Take away your pride, it is time to arise, yes.”
Focus: “The flesh has overcome the spirit, eyes opened but shot, sight blurred / Can’t see the road because I’m scared of the lights / I gotta go on, I gotta move on, we gotta go on, we gotta move on / ‘Cause if you don’t search for the truth your soul will definitely remain undone.”

Net Worth: Top 10 RICHEST Female Nigerian Artistes 2017
Tumblr media
As you all know Nigeria's Music Industry is dominated by the male, But we have to cut Nigerian female artistes some slack for daring to compete. The Ladies well known in music account only for a not-so-much percentile of the Industry. Just as the guys are taking home good money, the ladies are cutting big paychecks too. And they are equally doing good. The hustle is real for either male or female artistes. However, Legit9ja brings highlights of the top 10 ladies in music taking home the fattest paychecks. The net worth of some of our top female musicians will be analyzed and estimated to the most realistic value. Estimates are made from their performance/appearance fees, endorsements and music sales and tours.
