The Benga Manifesto
Whereas the US music scene was propped up by the African American culture of the 90s, the Nigeria by its 2013/16 arts growth, the Kenyan scene is yet to fully utilize its mojo! We need a Benga revolution!
The US of A boasts of about 140mn + boppers who ACTIVELY listen, buy & subscribe to music, with avg streams of 75min a day a pax. The music business owes the 40mn+ African Americans of the 90/2000’s who blew up the Rap, Hip Hop and RnB culture into the world. The 1985-2005 period produced the most creative of acts, genres building up to the peak of music sales in yr 2000. Akina Run DMC, Magu,…

Aftermath of Kenyan Gen Z Protest

It means taking responsibility for what has been done, confronting a challenging situation, or dealing with the repercussions of a decision or action. It can also imply enduring criticism, judgment, or…

I got tagged by @girlonthelasttrain & @enterprisery to shuffle my Spotify 'on repeat' playlist & list the first 10 songs that come up (thanks so much for tagging me! <3) I don't use Spotify and my "on repeat" top ten was fully dominated by two albums ('My 21st Century Blues' by RAYE & 'Time' by Electric Light Orchestra, it has been A Month😂) so I'll just shuffle my July playlist instead. (Yes, I make monthly playlists, if there's one thing I'm more annoying about than Star Trek it's music lolll anyway)
'Ritwa Riaku' by Eric Wainaina
'Day In Day Out' by Leron Thomas & Cotonete (it's a bop)
'Listen' by Tears For Fears (gonna be honest. This is an old favourite but I'm still not entirely sure what this song is supposed to be about? I just love the vibes haha guitars go brrrr)
'Fragile Ground' by Slowly Rolling Camera
'Every Piece Matters' by Plini
'Tiếp Đất' by Low G & Thắng (a little Vietnamese rap infiltrating the sadgirl playlist😂)
'Love is the Message' by... a bunch of people (if you haven't seen this video I highhhhly recommend it)
'Carry On' by Fun. (sometimes you just gotta listen to your middle school bops as an adult and go "but you were so right tho")
'Innuendo' by Queen (it's really feeling existential hours)
'Nikikutazama' by H_art the Band (look it helps me get ready in the morning okay!!)
Tagging @lorenzobane @wanderingwriter87 @cyberspacenine @bijoumikhawal & @sapphosewrites, no pressure though! :)

Ebo Taylor and Bibie Brew Receives Honorary Award at #ACCES2019
ACCES 2019 music conference started with a bang on Thursday night when Ebo Taylor and Bibie Brew received the Music In Africa Honorary Award at Alliance Française Accra. The two Ghanaian legends join previous awardees Eric Wainaina (Kenya, 2018) and Baaba Maal (Senegal, 2017).
It was then all about the music, with Taylor showcasing authentic highlife to a glowing ACCES audience. Yaa Yaa…

Summer Brief no.2- Courage the Cowardly Dog and Tinga Tinga Tales
Courage the Cowardly Dog is a horror-comedy created for Cartoon Network. It follows Courage, an easily distressed anthropomorphic beagle-mix, as he endeavours to save his owners Muriel and Eustace from the monsters, aliens, and various threats as they appear, even though they rarely ever notice his efforts. The show uses lots of horror tropes. I like the design of courage, he has a huge head that matches his body in size and tiny feet with one toe constantly pointed so the character always looks like he's tip-toeing. He is quite literally an underdog and his frail and ragged design reflects this.
Tinga Tinga Tales is a show named after Tanzanian Tingatinga Art, which the show's animation is reminiscent of. It was produced in Nairobi, Kenya by a Studio with around 50 people called Homeboyz Animation. Eric Wainaina, a Kenyan singer-songwriter, makes the music for the show. It tells African folk tales about various animals, explaining why they look or behave the way they do. For example, why a giraffe has a long neck or why meerkats are always so observant of their surroundings. The art style immediately caught my eye when I first saw it. The use of bold colour and patterns is very effective.
I think putting a domestic animal onto this art style would be interesting. Courage is the perfect candidate because of his bright pink colour and spots.

Inside Gideon’s quiet plan to revamp dormant Kanu Eric Wainaina @EWainaina Initially seen as a reluctant player in the succession politics, Baringo Senator and Kanu chairman Gideon Moi seems to be pulling his own weight by not only playing a visible role in the emerging One Kenya Alliance but also rolling out a silent strategy to revamp the independence party.
