Sometime after the release of the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Kakashi visits. 

It is no surprise. Naruto had sought out his former captain’s tent this morning, with Sai on his heels. Sakura had been quick to follow, though her visit had been briefer, given the amount of injured and ailing in her care. It was only a matter of time before word would reach Kakashi, and Kakashi would reach him. 

And Kakashi has done so, quietly slipping into Tenzō’s tent as he lays in rest. Tenzo hasn’t looked at him, or even lifted his heavy eyelids, but if there is a person he could recognize by footstep and sigh alone, it would be Kakashi.

“Chakra exhaustion?” Kakashi asks, perhaps to himself. 

“Almost. I’m still regenerating, slowly.” Tenzō replies.

He opens his eyes, and Kakashi is different. 

To start with, he has two black eyes. The sharingan is conspicuously absent, a symmetry which feels strange to Tenzō, but he imagines, must be stranger still for Kakashi. Naruto had said something about that. It hadn’t made sense at the time. It still doesn’t make sense now. His flak jacket is in tatters, but there are no visible bandages aside from his leg wrappings. It is difficult to decipher anything from looking at his face, aside from the fact he likely hasn’t slept in several days. 

“Are you injured?” Kakashi asks him, pragmatically. 

It is one of the more straightforward questions Kakashi could have asked him. Tenzō thinks about it. His body aches all over, but it is difficult to point to a specific cause. 

“Whatever it is that two days of forcible tenketsu activation does to you. My heart is also being monitored for the effects of Kabuto’s poison. And there’s been damage to the bones of the left inner ear. Partial loss of hearing. Hozuki’s jutsu, I’m told.” 

“Anything permanent?”

“Shizune won’t say so,” Tenzō admits, disconcerted. “But the other medics suggest low rates of full recovery. Medical ninjutsu for the eyes and ears doesn’t tend to be so precise. Even for me.”

Kakashi would know better than most, he supposes, how medical ninjutsu cannot bring back something that has been shattered or severed. He looks back at the other man’s face. For his part, Kakashi nods and then inclines his head towards Tenzō. Tenzō presses one sore leg against another to allow his companion to sit on the edge of his bedding.

Kakashi’s movements are unusually slow, and it prompts Tenzō to ask, “And your injuries?”

“Lacerations to the chest and left knee. A puncture wound to the abdomen. More than a few cuts, bruises and burns. But nothing I haven’t dealt with before.” Kakashi shrugs. “Naruto and Sasuke are much more banged up than I am.” 

It is somewhat of an understatement, considering Naruto was sporting one less arm this morning than the last time Tenzō had seen him, but Tenzō supposes they should be grateful that that was all they lost. Besides... “Naruto told me that Sasuke is back.” 

“Sasuke’s back,” Kakashi agrees warmly. For the first time since he’s arrived, Tenzō sees his cheeks lift in a relieved smile. “A little worse for the wear. He doesn’t heal as quickly as Naruto, so he’s under Sakura’s care now.”

Tenzō tries to smile back at him, but the muscles in his own face feel sluggish and uncontrolled. He settles for nudging his friend with his closest knee with the hope his meaning is conveyed. 

In lieu of a response, Kakashi reaches out and offers him a clumsy pat on the ankle. It is familiar, and for that reason, it is unbearably heavy. It feels like a house has been dropped on his chest. 

“Kakashi,” Tenzō says finally. “What happened?”

Contrary to the sigh that he responds with, Kakashi leans back to lay down on top of Tenzō’s blanket beside him. “Naruto told you, didn’t he?”

“He did.” Tenzō concedes. He isn't owed anything more than the information he's already been given. Even less, perhaps. “But I...” He trails off, uncertain but wanting. 

“It’s a long story,” is Kakashi’s eventual reply. 

“Well, as you can see, I’m in a hurry,” Tenzō deadpans, lifting one hand tiredly.

The laugh that comes in reply is one that Tenzō can feel, as it pushes Kakashi’s shoulder against his own and causes Kakashi’s hair, wild as ever and lacking hitai-ate, to prod his cheek. “Okay,” the other man says, closing his eyes as if to brace himself. When they open again, his gaze is somewhere distant. “I guess I should start with Obito.”

“Madara,” Tenzō says, both a question and a prompt. This much, he’s managed to piece together, as convoluted as each war story he’s heard has been. 

It’s unclear whether Kakashi’s responding hm is in agreement or protest. “You know how I got the sharingan.”

He does. It is not something Kakashi has chosen to speak of often, but Tenzō knows from both village intel and Kakashi’s own rare, grave words about it, how it’d come into his possession. “Kannabi Bridge. Your teammate, Uchiha Obito.” 

Kakashi nods, and this too, Tenzō feels. In his periphery, he sees Kakashi raise a hand to his own face and then let it fall. “Obito gave me a lot of things that day. My nindō. More time with Rin. My life, and his eye.” 

Tenzō tries to turn his head minutely, close as they are, to look at Kakashi. His scar remains on his face, unchanged. “I’ll get to that part later,” Kakashi adds wryly. 

“Sorry,” Tenzō says, settling himself back. He interlocks his fingers, resting them on his stomach. “I’ll listen.” 

“You know that each sharingan can develop its own ability. Itachi’s Tsukuyomi. Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami. My Kamui.” 

At the first name, Tenzō bites down the urge to ask more questions. He wonders if this is how Naruto felt during their rasenshuriken training. But he nods, and Kakashi continues. “Before reinforcements arrived, there were only a few of us on the battlefield. Myself, Gai, Naruto and Bee. Kyūbi and Hachibi. Tobi, and the bijū under his control through the Gedō Statue.” 

With all that he knows Team 7 has faced in the past few days, this should hardly surprise Tenzō, but the image of Kakashi and Gai being underfoot even one bijū makes his blood run cold, let alone several. Unlike himself, Bee, or Naruto, they have no monstrous form of power to protect them. He feels a wave of nausea roll over him, and holds his fingers more tightly together. “You make it sound much simpler than it is,” Tenzō tells him. 

“That battle feels simpler than anything else I’ve seen recently,” Kakashi replies wearily. Tenzō feels a shaky inhale at his side. Kakashi’s voice is much quieter in his next words. “Tobi... Obito... we learned while fighting that my Kamui and his technique were the same. Two halves. The Infinite Tsukuyomi was the first Madara’s device, and Obito was the fuse.”

“I’m sorry,” Tenzō says again. 

“Me too,” says Kakashi. “For many things up until now. Obito, Rin, Itachi, Gai, you... There are a lot of things I wish I could’ve done differently.” 

They are looking at each other again, and Tenzō wonders what Kakashi sees in his face. “That isn’t your responsibility,” he says, more sharply than he intends. 

Kakashi raises a brow at him. Not unkindly, he replies, “Yours either.”

The words verge on something too close for comfort. Tenzō swallows around a suddenly tight throat. He unclasps his hands, flexing his fingers and retracting into a fist, once, twice, three times, repeating, feeling ten years old again all at once. It takes him a moment to catch his breath. “Naruto said... Obito helped you, in the end?”

Kakashi’s hand finds one of his, stilling it. He brings two of Tenzō’s fingers to his other wrist, letting Tenzō feel his steady pulse. It is slower than Tenzō’s counting, and his friend waits. When several moments of respite have passed, Kakashi tells him, “Obito helped us. We couldn’t have defeated Kaguya or undone the Infinite Tsukuyomi without him. We parted as friends.”

“I’d ask how, but I have a feeling I know.” Tenzō manages a smile this time. “Naruto has a way of getting people to see things through his eyes.”

Kakashi chuckles. “Better than anyone I know. He got through to Obito, and to Sasuke. He might’ve even eventually found a way to reach Madara, too, in time. He’s going to make quite the Hokage,” he adds. 

“Seventh, I hear,” Tenzō says slyly, tapping his fingers against his companion’s wrist.

To his amusement, Kakashi’s ears go red, his pulse picking up. “Ah, well...” And then, something in his face softens, and both eyes crease in a smile. “Yes.”

Yet again, Tenzō feels like he is walking the halls of a well-frequented haunt, only to find that the inside is not quite recognizable. But Kakashi’s expression is warm and sincere, and he grasps tightly onto the familiarity of that. “That’s what you get for saving the world,” he replies, as lightly as he is able. 

Kakashi shakes his head. “I don’t think I had much to do with that. They’d have found a way, with or without me.”

This terrain is more habitual, and Tenzō regains some of his footing. Eyeing his bedfellow doubtfully, he asks, “Is that so, Kakashi of the Susano’o?” 

At that, Kakashi flinches, letting out a startled laugh. He finally drops their gathered hands, but they land between their two bodies, so Tenzō can still feel the clamminess of Kakashi’s knuckles. “Where did you hear that?” 

“Naruto and Sakura seem to have taken it upon themselves to rehabilitate the reputation of every Uchiha who helped them out. They had a lot to say about your eyes.” Tenzō explains. With a furrowed brow, he adds, “Though I couldn’t really follow all of their stories.”

Kakashi sighs. “You’re not alone in that. No one else was awake for Kaguya’s return, so we’ve had a lot of explaining to do.”

Tenzō tries to picture it. “I imagine some of that must’ve been a tough sell.”

It paints a vaguely amusing mental image to picture Kakashi and his students trying to draw out diagrams of rabbit goddesses and alternate dimensions like a jōnin sensei might do while explaining chakra theory to their genin team. Tenzō visualizes the battlefield as a classroom, and imagines the Kage raising their hands to ask questions. 

“You’d be surprised what people are willing to accept if you release them from an endless genjutsu,” Kakashi says, interrupting his thoughts. 

Ah. Tsukuyomi. This is the one part of the war where his recollections are his own. 

Tenzō wonders if anyone else’s deepest desires were as mortifyingly mundane as his. So close within their reach. So contrary to what they have been able to achieve. His fist closes again, and this time it is Kakashi’s fingers that reach for his hand, pressing down. Calloused, warm, and unlike any that have been touching him lately. Not measuring, but grounding. 

“Do you remember much?” Kakashi asks. His tone is gentle, not unlike what he's used in particularly difficult missions, when they have faced an enemy he has no desire to fight.

It is only by merit of the polysemous nature of Kakashi’s question that Tenzō is able to answer. “Nothing that I can say now,” he says simply; beseechingly. 

In the pause that follows, he risks a look at Kakashi. His expression has an air of compassion that feels misplaced, but luckily, all the other man does is nod. Tenzō closes his eyes again. 

Kakashi’s breathing is so even beside him that Tenzō wonders if he might have fallen asleep. His own fatigue has started to catch up with him, weighing down his eyelids again and keeping them from reopening. Even the questions that remain in mind feel more and more distant, as if carried away by water. It is in this half-conscious state that Tenzō hears, “When you have something to say, I’ll listen.”

Tenzō remains silent, but he grips Kakashi's hand in turn as he drifts off.

Let's see, my fave fics that I've written...in order of least-to-most read lol

The Traveler, 92k word Dragon Age fic about what Solas was doing prior to waking up and starting all the Problems. Initially approached with the concept of Solas as a nod to Doctor Who, in which he is using a special eluvian to travel the fade and then he picks up companions to travel with along the way. By the end of it I've made everyone's canon my own canon through time shenanigans. This fic took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to write because the prose is meant to mimic iambic/Shakespearian cadences throughout, so it was by far one of the most technically difficult things I've ever done. I really, REALLY wish the fandom gave it more love because I worked SO hard on it and am very proud of it, but alas. It will have to be one of the greatest things I've ever written that nobody has ever read lolol

Pieces of Us, 14k word Dragon Age oneshot. The story of how Morrigan gave birth to Kieran, juxtaposed with the time after they leave the Inquisition. The fic is split into two POVs at different points in the timeline, with Morrigan's POV being in the past and Kieran's POV being in the present day. lol I did a lot of research to try and get the pregnancy/birth portrayal right, and I'm proud of how it turned out.

Maximum Thrustitude, 43k words of absolute tomfoolery. One time in LA I got sun poisoning and accidentally met Brian Wecht but had no idea who he was, and in the car ride back from that vacation, I hallucinated the novelization of the song 6969 by Ninja Sex Party. A song which is, in itself, fanfiction of the Rush song 2112. This remains one of my favorite things I've ever written, it's so delightfully stupid and yet I still padded out the lore and the story beats so it's not without weight. Another "classic" of mine that nobody has read XD y'all missing out though, this is a 43k word dick joke that will make you have feelings at the end. ;)

No Star Falls Twice, 176k word Mass Effect fic. Technically I should be pointing to the whole series, bc I think it works best if you've followed the full buildup, but even without those little contexts, I think the ME3 fic can stand on it's own. I was really proud of the changes I made to canon and the way I tied it all together, and ending the trilogy of fics gutted me in the best way. Really poured my heart into this one.

Indefensible. 535k words of Ace Attorney fic in which I not only gave everyone in the main cast their own growth arcs, but meticulously plotted cases to solve throughout the fic that had narrative relevance and weight. When I started, I wasn't even sure I could write mystery, and by the time it was done I think I cemented mystery as one of my favorite things to write. I am so. fucking. proud of how it turned out and am profoundly grateful to everyone in the AA fandom that's taken a chance on reading it, because it took SO MUCH deep thinking and work. Balancing mystery plots alongside romance plots is no easy task, but it might be one of my fave tasks ;)

Lost and Squashed

I had a random flash of inspiration to write for Danny Sexbang and Ninja Brian. But before you read it, I recommend watching/listening to this video since the inspiration was birthed from it.

Warnings: Blood, flirtatious stuff, weapons, a little gore

5am.... why in the world was someone beating at your door at 5am? 

Why did you have near hundreds of messages and missed calls from Danny since 3am??? 

You groaned as the knocking turned to a real thumping. Your phone lighting up as an ID photo of Danny Sexbang, in a very erotic pose, thankfully in his spandex suit, filled the screen.  You didn’t bother answering the call. Instead dragged yourself out of the cozy blankets and towards the door.  Throwing it open and hissing viciously,

“It’s. 5. In. The. Morning!” 

Danny, not at all fazed by your anger, shoved his phone into his leather jacket and grabbed your shoulders. His eyes blown wide with near hysteria. 

“(Y/N)! You have to help me find Ninja Brian! It’s been two days and I haven’t seen him since the date and I think he could be in trouble or worse is actually falling for this chick and I don’t-” 

Danny was speaking far too fast for you to make any sense out of it. The vomit of words all coming out on one exhale of breath and you were sure he’d pass out if you didn’t cut in. “Whoa, whoa, rein in the horses for a second, Danny. What the fuck are you on about?” 

Danny took a deep breath and released your shoulders. Seeming to be a little calmer.  “Ninja Brian has gone missing. And I mean really missing. He hasn’t answered any of my snapchats or liked any of social website posts. He has just disappeared.” 

You raised an eyebrow and made a confused face. “He’s a ninja. That’s what he does.” 

“No! But this time, it’s different. I can just feel it. Look, I am begging you to come look for him with me. I’ll buy you breakfast! Have sex with you-” 

“No sex.” 

“Fine! I’ll shout breakfast and coffee. Just come on.” He grabbed your elbow and dragged you out of your apartment. Near running to the elevator and pressing the button multiple times in his attempt to make the machine go faster.  You pouted, covering yourself as best you could as Danny sprinted into the lobby and out of the apartment complex. 

“You couldn’t have let me get change?” You hissed as you hurried to keep up with him. 

“No time! Ninja Brian could be in danger!” Danny huffed. Opening the door to his... you guessed stolen car, since you remembered Danny didn’t have a license nor the money to own a car. 

“NB is not in danger. The man is danger! He’s basically all chaotic energy forced into a meat suit. No one would mess with him.” You slipped into the front seat and Danny clambered into the drivers seat. “You just want to see as much skin on me as possible!” 

Danny wasn’t quick enough to rein in his smirk. But he hid the smile behind a cough, which distantly sounded like, “Maybe”, as the vehicle shot into the air in a sheer vertical climb and soared over the city at frightening speed.  You huffed and crossed your arms over your chest. Ignoring the side glances Danny was giving you as you gazed down at the city.  “Ok, so where are we going to start? Why do you think NB is in danger?” 

“The last girl I went on a date with was NUTS! And those two hit it off like fireworks near the end of the date.” Danny replied. Narrowly missing a skyscraper as he jerked the wheel to the left. “I am never trusting your dating advice again.” 

“W-What?! My dating advice? Who the hell did I tell you to go on a date with?” 

“Shannon from your work. I thought she was real cute! And she was nice and, admittedly a little shy, but damn, after that first murder she turned into a real pyscho-” 

“Murder?!” You screeched. 

“Yes, (y/n), murder. Don’t change the subject! This is your fault!” Danny pointed a finger at you. Angrily mumbling how you were a terrible wing-person and was going to refuse every attempt at date giving from now on.... unless they were blonde. 

“No. No! Shannon is nice! She has dated like... three guys in her life-time... and you murdered someone on your first date?! I told you to stay away from Shannon!” 

“Well fuck, (y/n)! You know I can’t say no to a red head. She was so cute!” Danny looked ridiculously sad and you threw up your hands in anger as he turned his puppy eyes to you. 

“I cannot believe you. So what? NB and Shannon hit it off? Like Shannon could do anything to NB.” 

“Look, I do not trust her. Not after the 180 degree asylum turn she did that night. I just want to make sure Ninja Brian is ok and that he hasn’t been drugged up and used on the black market.” Danny said. Glancing at you when you didn’t answer right away. Glaring when he noticed the knowing smile on your lips. 

“Your bro-mance is adorabl-” 

“Shut up!” 

Danny drove until you reached Shannon’s apartment.  Or at least that’s what Danny told you. You only knew Shannon professionally through work. You never actually were friends, per say, but you knew her enough to try and save her from Danny’s predatory advances. 

“Ok, so I dropped her off here and then she rejected my second date proposal-” 

“Shocking.” You cut in. 

“And then I saw Ninja Brian in her window! That was the last time I saw those two. I kinda guessed Ninja Brian would come home when he’s ready.” Danny looked at his phone. Worry creasing his forehead when he had no new messages. 

“NB isn’t a cat, Danny. He’s a grown, very violent, man. He probably saw something red and went on a murder spree.” 

Danny hummed in agreement, but still didn’t like the fact he had heard nothing from his friend in two days. And worse, Shannon had blocked him on all social media sites. Even changed her number!!  “Alright. Lets go up and knock on her door, maybe they’re-” 

“Having weird, ninja, psycho sex. No thanks. My eyes are still damaged from seeing you with that Mime. I’m gonna ask down the street. Maybe the locals have seen them.” You left before Danny tried to persuade you into accompanying.  You’ve played side-kick with him before, and though it is fun, you didn’t have the patience for him right now. This early in the morning. NB was a better player for that. And so early in the morning, you didn’t expect Ninja Brian to be in bed just yet. 

You wandered towards a small bakery. A few streets over from the apartment complex. From the store owners you met along the way, you had a valid guess to where Ninja Brian might be. Or at least, where he had been.  The people had been terrified through the night. Telling you stories of blood-curdling screams. Explosions. And even the sirens of Police-Bots rushing towards a burning building. Only to end in more explosions. 

It definitely sounded like NB’s work. 

However, you stopped before you got too close. The windows were smashed and the brick walls looked scorched. The roof was caved in, still wet from the water you guessed a fire fighter used to put it out. Bits of metal were strewn around the place. A robot’s head lay cut in half on the bakery floor, it’s body falling from the rafters of the crumbling building. You gulped nervously. Not wanting to get closer, but the more you observed, the worse the picture.  Blood splatters, a severed hand on the tile floor, a few shuriken embedded into the wall.  You knew you were on the right track.  But before you could turn to go get Danny, a voice jerked your attention to the alley next to the bakery. The one you currently stood next too. 

“Hey! (Y/N)! Like my work? I tried to cook some bread but the ovens got too hot. Burnt the place down. Neat right!” 

“S-Shannon?” You asked. Your jaw dropping at the sight of the girl you knew, the same one that use to wear long skirts and sleeves. With minimum make-up and usually seen with a shy smile.  But now, she looked bad-ass. A collar rimmed her neck, the black leather jacket barely covering her very thin material shirt. Skin tight jeans and heeled boots, she was intimating before you noticed she carried a machete type blade. That just terrified. You scrambled for words, unable to believe this was your shy co-worker staring you down.  “D-Damn, girl. You look...different.” 

“Different? Different how?” The tone in her voice told you that their was no good answer here. And you raised your hands, in a type of surrender motion. 

“I didn’t mean it badly, Shannon. I swear. I’m just not use to you wearing... black.” 

Your face drained of blood when Shannon’s eyes creased in a cold glare. Her fingers tightening on the weapon’s handle as she raised it.  “You know what, (y/n), I was almost gonna spare you. But now you’re gonna be my last kill before breakfast.”  She rushed at you. The blade gleaming as she swung it down, aiming for your stomach.  But a cloud of smoke exploded between you, obscuring you from Shannon’s path. And you heard her grunt, and yell an upset shout. “Hey! Ninja Baby what are you doing? She’s mine.” 

You stepped back when the smoke cleared. Allowing you to see the very ninja you had been searching for standing in front of you. His hands had caught the machete between his palms, stopping it an inch in front of his chest.  His ever fury imbued gaze burning down on Shannon. But she didn’t even flinch at his gaze, she only frowned and lowered the weapon.  “Oh, you know her too?” Shannon said. Stepping back, to which Brian allowed the blade to drop from his hands. “Huh, sorry, (y/n), I got excited.” 

“Yeah.... no kidding.” You mumbled.  Brian turned to look at you. The fury still there, but a quizzical arch to his bushy eyebrows. His eyes going over your attire. “Danny basically beat down my door to drag me out to come look for you. He’s worried~” You added a teasing lint to your words.  Brian rolled his eyes and turned back to Shannon. Who had wandered off and was now beating a trash-can with a metal pipe she found. You continued to talk over the loud noise.  “Well, I’m not going to interrupt you two. So I’ll go tell Danny you’re ok, Brian. And hopefully get some sleep before work. See ya, Shannon! Uh... be safe.” 

Shannon smiled and waved goodbye. And you turned to leave, getting a few steps before Shannon called out.  “Hey! Baby, where are you going?” 

You looked back and found Brian had started to follow you. At Shannon’s call, he turned and pointed at you.  Confused, Shannon dropped the pipe and swaggered over. The machete being picked back up as she closed in.  “But... what about our ten murders before pancakes?” She asked.  Brain pointed to her, then to him and then made a slicing motion with his fists. Like he was breaking something.  Shannon gasped and eyes seemed to flood her eyes. Mascara running like streams down her cheeks. 

“W-Wait... you’re breaking up with me?” She asked, mid-sob. 

Brain nodded. And you were tempted to sprint for it. You did not want to be around a machete wielding woman after a break-up.  “Um... I’m gonna go...” 

“It’s your fault!” Shannon shrieked. You sighed and threw your hands up. 

“Why is everyone blaming me?!” You exclaimed. 

“Because if you didn’t tell Danny to ask me out I wouldn’t be in this situation!”

Shannon lunged forward and you narrowly escaped being stabbed by the massive blade. If not for Ninja Brian’s slap to Shannon’s wrist, that is. Causing her to drop the weapon. 

“I never told Danny to ask you out. I specifically told him to stay away from you!” You cried out as Shannon once again lunged at you. Her polished nails swiping at you viciously, and you made a run for the street. Wanting to escape the crazed woman as best you can.  Ninja Brian made an irritated expression with his eyebrows and hurried after the two of you. Getting to the where the alley opened up to the street before stopping, watching you bolt across the road, with Shannon hot on your heels. 

“I thought we were friends-” 

“Ninja Brian!” A loud sickening crunch cut off Shannon’s screams. An engine cut off as Danny leapt out of the parked vehicle and rushed to his friend. “Oh thank god! You’re alright. Dude! What the fuck? You didn’t like my tumblr post last night. I worked real hard on that, dude! Like two hours worth of jacking it-” 

“Oh my god! You killed her!” You screamed. Snapping both men to attention as you stared at the bloodied car.  Shannon’s arm was bent in all sorts of wrong ways. Red blood oozed out from under the car, chunky bits following the stream as it trickled towards the drain. 

“Oh... my bad.” Danny said. His mouth twisting in disgust. Ninja Brian stared down at the broken legs that were sticking out from under the metal object. Only to shrug and open out his hand, silently asking for the car keys. “Oh, hell no dude. Last time you drove, three skyscrapers and time square blew up. I am not making that mistake again.”

“G-Guys, can we please just acknowledge that you just killed Shannon!”

Danny frowned and shrugged. “I did. I said ‘my bad’. She was clingy. I mean, Ninja Brian was just saying how he has been trying to ditch her all night. Come on, (y/n), listen for once.” 

You stomped your foot in frustration and crossed your arms. Angrily refusing to get in the car with Danny and Brian. Even when Danny patted the seat next to him and cooed, like he was talking to a dog.  “Come on, (y/n). We’ll go get breakfast. Come on. Come on, gorgeous. You know you want breakfast.” 

You struggled to keep the grin from your face. But you broke when Ninja Brian in the back, lifted a sign with the picture of a stack of pancakes on it. A smiley face painted on it.  You sighed and stomped over to the car, having to do the splits to avoid the puddle of Shannon on the passenger side.

The cosmos is alive once more. It has retrieved its long lost light and hope has returned with it. Under the starry skies, families are gathering and cheering to the stars. Some are already looking beyond them, awaiting their next adventure.

STMPD Recommends Bubblegum Crisis Fanfiction: BakaGaijin30's Bubblegum Crisis Meiji

Look Ma, it's a historical AU!

Yeah, that's right, two posts in one night and I've got another one in me coming right down the pipeline that isn't a fanfic review. I read this one in a few sittings over today, all 84k words of it, and I gotta say... this one does what I otherwise would have thought impossible.

Because, let's be real here, is it really possible to extract Crisis from its cyberpunk setting without some damage being done? The only other AU like this I can think of is Sylia's Choice, and the framing device for that is a dream of all things, and the setting is Oriental Adventures from D&D 3E... and it's hardly a good fanfiction, anyway. Moving along...

Meiji is more a 2040-derived AU, mind you, but it has enough 2032 elements, and enough original setting material ripped shamelessly from Lone Wolf & Cub and Rurouni Kenshin to make up the difference; it really ends up being its own thing in most respects, especially in how the fight scenes play out. But we'll get to that in a bit.

Anyway, Linna Yamazaki is a geisha with martial arts training (purely for self-defense) who comes to the rapidly transforming Tokyo in a time when Japan is struggling to find its footing, beset by racist foreigners hell-bent on making it another colony. I bring this up because it's most of the politics of the fic, Glorious Nippon trying to prevent Westerners from fucking it over with blatant racism and warmongering... and who's better at warmongering, selling rifles to both sides of any colonial war, than Genom International? At least, according to Brian J. Mason.

So Linna manages to kill three Yakuza who kill one of her geisha buddies, and attracts the attention of Sylia, who buys her contract out so she can join the Sabers; so she and Priss (a half-American on her whaler dad's side) quickly begin a head-over-heels love affair; so Mason kidnaps Emperor Meiji and schemes to get his hands on the Boomer equivalent of this story, essentially a Lewis Machine Gun (which is used, alas, like once - the Sabers with AK-equivalents in this timeline would have been great but it's not to be) and the Sabers must get him back.

Simple stuff, but between the 'shoujo-ai' there is a lot of insane samurai swordfights, with the weapons of each Saber translated fairly well (Nene uses shurikens, a bow, and a naginata; Linna uses twin swords in a sort of flowing tai-chi-esque style; Priss just uses a cavalry-grade greatsword; Sylia uses a katana in various exotic fighting styles) into a bloody mess of slaughtering Yakuza and ninjas and other unkempt folk. Not a whole lot of gunplay, mind you, but the point is that the Sabers take a lot of wounds, and those wounds accumulate, and yet they keep going, more blood and guts are spilled at an ever-greater cost. It's really wonderfully fun to read, I mean it.

Characters are integrated well-enough: Galatea is a genuinely threatening villain this time around instead of whatever she was in 2040; Mackie, Henderson, and Nigel get to participate in later fight scenes; Sylvie and Anri get cameos as plain ol' prostitutes; even Irene shows up for like five minutes before getting stabbed, but is that any different from how she was treated in the original OVAs? If I have one complaint it's that Linna and Priss's relationship gets consummated very fast, and then Leon's a massive dick about it, to the point that the last chapter is literally him and Linna having a gun duel over Priss (not that anyone dies, mind you, but Leon's homophobia is a little over-the-top even in historical context, I dunno).

So! Read this one, even if the author abandoned yuri fanfic to find Christ (no really look at his author page). And I'll try to wrack my brain to see what I remember about the sequel, Crash '81 - I remember it having many more crossovers, much more yuri, and even more bonkers action and old-timey colonial racism, which is all that you can ask for in a fic in this environment, right?

Damn, now I want a more steampunk-y BGC AU. Give the Sabers 'repeating rifles' and clunky Tesla Cannons and suchlike. That'd be stupid fun, even if no one gives a shit about steampunk anymore.

Fangirl Woes: The Not So Grump Chronicle

Note: before this begins, it is all in jest and is not a critiscism or anything.  I just needed to get something off my chest and hopefully make a humourous observation about humour.  So here we go.,,

You guys know that I love Dan Avidan, I love him with my heart and soul.  

I've seen him do a lot, from the wholesome to the raunchy to the inspirational and the aspirational.  He’s quite possibly one of the kindest, charming and most irreverent hilarious men out there.

He has said a lot of stuff both on Game Grumps and with NSP and Starbomb that I’ve been grand with.  It’s his humour and that’s grand.

But I have to draw the line somewhere before my head literally explodes.

I am quite in awe of him going on a road trip, having sex all over the world and dying up in space.

I am grand with him mentioning his erection that appears for no reason other than nervous tension and sexual situations.

I am willing to hear tell of him banging all the inanimate objects in an apartment including the door which he somehow managed to fit into a bed.

I am willing to hear him read lines from a self-penned romance novel that involves a play on words involving yam yams and peanut butter with a piano being thrown by Ninja Brian at the coda.

But I have reached my limit and I am drawing a line in the sand, I am making a statement, I am looking inside myself and asking 'What was I willing to put up with today?'

My answer is a deafening, resounding yell that I hope will be heard in the North Pole, 'Not Dan Avidan of New Jersey and the internet reading chapter infinity of a badly written fanfiction that involves the sexual behaviours of a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog that isn't even slightly ironic and has my brain going to the cesspool of Rule 34 depravity that I've managed to avoid with just the merest slice of my sanity intact!!'

That part about the fanfiction came from a dark place.

Needless to say, if there is ‘fanfiction’ in the title of a GG video in future, I will not complain.  Instead, I am running for the hills with my fingers jammed in my ears.

Now, where’s my teapot?
