Ayal Senior - Ora
Underground mainstay Ayal Senior returns with his 22nd (!) release — and the Toronto-based musician is sounding better than ever. Ora is a deep listening experience that sees Ayal's chiming 12-string complemented a very skilled group: Kurt Newman on pedal steel and guitar, Andrew Furlong on bass, Blake Howard on drums and Jay Anderson on percussion. Together, they've created a splendid song cycle of nine swirling, spiritual and psychedelic instrumentals, like Robbie Basho teaming up with Pavement. There's a relaxed, at-ease quality to the album, but it often reaches a quiet ecstasy, taking the listener along for the ride.

Hadrian's Wall was built in c. AD 122 on the orders of Emperor Hadrian. Today, the Wall runs across northern England, but when it was built, it was the northern frontier of the Roman province of Britannia. With the exception of a couple of decades in the mid-2nd century AD, Hadrian's Wall was the north-west frontier of the Roman Empire for approximately 300 years. It was built to separate the Romans from the Barbarians¹ and may have been built in response to guerrilla warfare waged by the natives. It was certainly built to secure the border and control the movement of people in and out of the Empire.
The Wall is believed to have taken about six years to complete, although it would continue to change and evolve for decades after completion. Initially, some parts were built from timber and turf and others in stone. Eventually, the entire Wall, from Maia in the west to Segedunum in the east, was built in stone. In front of the Wall, where there were otherwise no natural features for protection such as rivers or cliffs, the Romans dug a deep ditch. Behind the Wall was the Vallum, which was an earthwork that comprised two banks of earth with a deep ditch in between. The Vallum stretched almost the entire length of the Wall, over 70 miles, and probably defined the rear of the Wall-zone.
The height of Hadrian's Wall is difficult to know because so little of it remains. It probably varied depending on the terrain. For example, the Wall as it crossed the high cliffs of the Whin Sill was possibly about 4-4.6 metres high (13-15 feet) and slightly higher—possibly 4.6-5.5 metres (15-18 feet) or more—when it crossed easily traversed terrain.
Hadrian's Wall has been used as a quarry since it was abandoned. Today, only about 10% of the Wall remains, and the sections of wall that have survived stand at a height of just 1-2 metres in most places. However, as recently as the 16th century there was a section of Wall standing 5 metres high (16 feet) near Bowness-on-Solway. Samson Erdeswick records in 1574:
"Begyning abowt a town called Bonus [Bowness-on-Solway] standing vppon the river Sulway now called Eden, and there yet standing of the heyth of 16 fote, for almost a quarter of a myle together, and so along the river syde estwards."
William Camden (16/17th century):
"Within two furlongs of Caervoran, on a pretty high hill the Wall is still standing, fifteen feet in height, and nine in breadth."
Bede (7/8th century):
"It is eight feet in breadth, and twelve in height, in a straight line from east to west, as is still visible to beholders."
These writers lived many centuries after the Roman military abandoned Britain. Even Bede, the earliest reference to the height I have used, was writing some 300 years after the Roman military had left Britain. Thus, the Wall might have lost a few feet in height in places by his day.
With regard to thickness, Hadrian's Wall was up to 3 metres (over 9 feet) thick, but again, it varied. Some sections were about 2.5 metres thick (8 feet), and other sections narrower.
In its day, Hadrian's Wall was an impressive 73-mile-long (80 Roman miles) stone structure with no fewer than 16 large forts, 80 milecastles, and about 160 turrets. It crossed over rivers, hills, and along cliffs, from the west coast to the banks of the River Tyne in the east.
An unbelievable structure that survives from the ancient world.
Location: above Sycamore Gap looking east.

Boing Boing! Back to Earth with a bump for North End
Ryan Lowe called the result a blip after this 0-4 home reverse against the Baggies, but I thought it was more like a good old fashion tonking by a much better team. West Brom looked full of energy for the full ninety minutes and closed us down so well we hardly got near the vistors goal. They had a very experienced line up, as we did, but we just could match up to their intensity and superior football on the day. One down after five minutes and we really did look in trouble from that moment on. A defensive error from Storey allowed the vistors a second on the half hour and from that point the game was over as a contest with North End looking very ineffective on the day. The manager made four changes in the second half but it was all too late as North End were left to lick their wounds after this first defeat of the season.
The manager made one change from the side that drew at Rotherham last week with Liam Millar coming in at left wing back for Robbie Brady. The visitors started right on the front foot and had a chances to take the lead with a close range header going wide. In the fifth minute a well worked move on the left saw Furlong fire home from the edge of the box with the North End defence stood watching. North End`s best chance of the half came when Millar fired over unmarked from the inside left position. Soon after North End were two down when Storey failed to clear and for the second week running his mistake was punished when Mowatt fired home. A chance at either end before the break but it was West Brom who looked much more comfortable as the teams trooped off at half time.
Brady came on for the ineffective McCann after the break with Millar moving up to play behind Osmajic alongside Homes. Two good chances came and went for the visitors but Phillips made it three with a deflected slot just before we brought on Frokjaer, Keane and Whiteman. North End did have a few half chances after the third West Brom goal through Millar and Frokjaer but in all honesty our body language looked that of a team that was looking for the final whistle. Just to add insult to injury the Baggies completed the rout three minutes from the end when Bartley made it four with the home side looking absolutely shattered. It had been a torrid ninety minutes for North End and for the Deepdale faithful, plenty of whom had left long before the final whistle.
A really bad afternoon for North End both on and off the field we were outplayed and out thought tactically on this occasion. However the first thing to remember is that we have collected twenty points from the first nine games of the season, which is automatic promotion form. If we extrapolate that over the season it would give us 102 points. Yes we have a tough week coming up with trips to Leicester and Ipswich but if anybody thinks we are going to roll over I suggest they think again, The Walkers Stadium will be buzzing on Wednesday evening with 2,500 North End fans cheering the boys on and it would not be the biggest surprise in the world if we got something from the game. It is very early days, lets take one game at a time and see where we are after we have been to Hull at the end of October.

How old must a horse be to run in the Epsom Derby?
Tumblr media
The Epsom Derby, also known as the Derby Stakes or, simply, the Derby, is a flat horse race in England open to three-year-old colts and fillies. It takes place at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey on the first Saturday of June. The race course is a distance of one mile, four furlongs and 6 yards, which equates to roughly 2,420 metres.
The Derby was first run in 1780 and is the most prestigious flat horse race in Britain. The name "Derby" derived from the original sponsorship of the Earl of Derby. It has since been used many times for other horse races, such as the Kentucky Derby in the United States.
As of 2022, the rider with the most wins at the Epsom Derby is Lester Piggott, who won nine times between 1954 and 1983. The fastest winning time was set in 2010 by Ryan Moore on a horse called Workforce. They raced the Derby in two minutes and 31.33 seconds. Workforce (foaled 2007) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse that retired in 2011.

Tones and Shades of the Kolkesplirren
Tones and Shades of the Kolkesplirren
A kolkesplir in tindulmoss colors. There is a venerable Jackalopian folk song where the singers taunt a girl-child about her red hair, with a verse revealing that her mother fell asleep in a cornfield in the moonlight, and during the night a demon flew over her head, at an altitude of three furlongs. Nine months later, the women’s baby was born with a full head of blazing red hair. Apparently,…

He’s likely to be stalking likely early leader Authentic and a couple of others going into the far turn, and when jockey Manny Franco asks Tiz the Law for his usual burst of speed, it is unlikely any horse will have any response worthy of challenging the colt in the last eighth of a mile. He’s also seasoned, having beaten 29 different horses in his four starts this year. This is an incredibly gifted equine athlete who wants to win and can back up the desire with immense talent. Running the mile and a quarter distance of the Derby last month in the Travers Stakes, Tiz the Law was even more impressive, making a move on the turn to go from third to first by a half-length, then asserting himself to win by 5 ½ lengths as he was eased up in the final yards having done the job and still saving something for this race. Nearly two months later, the colt put on another display to win the Curlin Florida Derby with a 112 figure, then nearly two months later he ran similarly well with a 113 figure as he dominated the field by nearly four lengths in the Belmont Stakes. Starting with the Holy Bull Stakes, Tiz the Law earned a 117 Equibase Speed Figure, which is unheard of for a 3-year-old in the winter. That is not the case this year, as Tiz the Law has run consistently fast in all four starts since making his first start as a 3-year-old in February. In normal years when the Derby is run in May, there may be a number of horses who are on patterns of improvement enough to give the likely favorite a run for his money. It is very difficult to envision Tiz the Law not winning this year’s Kentucky Derby. Big News and Winning Impression round out the field, the first two entering off a non-threatening fourth- and sixth-place finishes, respectively, in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes and the latter off a seventh-place effort in the Ellis Park Derby. Storm the Court, who posted the 45.90-1 upset last fall in the Grade 1 TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, moves back to dirt after a runner-up finish in the Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap and may be able be competitive in this situation. Major Fed was the runner-up in the Indiana Derby, the same position he finished in a division of the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford in February. Necker Island third in the Ellis Park Derby, the same position he finished in the Grade 3 Indiana Derby prior to that. Money Moves has never run in a stakes race but he’s a very lightly raced colt coming into the race off a career-best effort and has the breeding to run this far. Attachment Rate is another horse who has been doing okay at the graded stakes level, particularly when second behind Art Collector (who was not entered due to a slight injury this week) in the Runhappy Ellis Park Derby last month. was himself beaten by Thousand Words in the Shared Belief Stakes last month at Del Mar. beat Authentic in the Grade 1 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby, before Honor A. Authentic recently won the Grade 1 TVG.com Haskell Stakes by a nose over Ny Traffic. Authentic and Ny Traffic are likely to offer bettors who want to find potential value just that. His last win came last October at Churchill Downs in the Street Sense Stakes, but he’s winless in nine races since then. South Bend was a late entrant into this race after some withdrawals earlier in the week. Davis Stakes in February and is one of just a few in the field with breeding to run the 10-furlong trip successfully. Sole Volante was sixth behind Tiz the Law in the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets in June but he did win the Grade 3 Sam F. Max Player won the Grade 3 Withers Stakes in February but has been beaten by an average of six lengths in two tries vs. Looking at the rest of the field, Tiz the Law has already beaten Max Player, Sole Volante and South Bend.

❝    IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN ! the long awaited tutshill derby is finally upon us, and if you haven’t already managed to snap up your tickets for the weekend long event, you better act now - tier two and three are completely sold out, and we’ve been told to warn you all that availability for tier one is going fast ! event runners have worked closely with the ministry of magic to ensure that the eighteen races spread out across the next three days go off without a hitch, but we’ve been assured that the new security measures put in place will not interfere with your enjoyment of the weekend - news our minister is also sure to appreciate, as this weekend is said to be serving as his early birthday celebration ! you might just catch a glimpse of him and his beautiful wife, eulalia from the private booth we’ve been told that they’ll be occupying in the ministers stand - and if you stay tuned until after the break, we here at the wwn have exclusive info on the ministers favorites to win !  ❞
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE :
holding the honor of being one of the most highly anticipated hippogriff racing events in europe, the tutshill derby is a group 1 land + air race open to four year old colts and fillies. occuring only once every three years due to the time it takes to protect the immediate area surrounding the tutshill racecourse from the prying eyes of nearby muggles - second only to the likes of the quidditch world cup, an event that has in the past taken precedence over the tutshill race, much to the chagrin to passionate jockeys and their teams.
it typically runs over the last weekend of june or first weekend of july and over a distance of two miles, four furlongs and nine yards ( 4,031 metres ) across a course that tests each hippogriff on their skill and endurance both on land and in the sky. it was first run in 1543 and continues to draw steady interest from casual gamblers and hippogriff enthusiasts alike. this year, the tutshill derby serves as an early celebration of the minister of magic’s birthday.
tickets are available in three tiers of various price ranges, and each comes with their own unique set of perks.
TIER ONE tickets are essentially general admission. they’re the easiest to purchase due to their extremely low price and surplus of numbers and provide access to the large expanse of land at the center of the racecourse, referred to as the circle. what started as little more than a cheap option to allow the less well off in wix society enjoy the highs and lows of raceday has really grown over the last few decades into a place where people genuinely want to be - by far the most ‘family friendly’ area of the whole event, the circle now includes a large carnival with a mix of muggle and wix carnival games and contraptions ( the teacups sit between a ferris wheel and a broom flying simulator ), along with food trucks and portable bars set up by the staff of the likes of the leaky cauldron & the three broomsticks. volunteers will paint the faces of little children for the low price of two sickles, and anyone who isn’t that interested in the outcome of the actual races ( or just doesn’t want to waste their money betting with any of the wandering bookmakers available ) is welcome to try their hand at winning stuffed animals, live fish or any number of other wacky prizes available at the different stands. there’s a seemingly neverending stream of colorful bubbles and free flags to be gotten from individuals walking the area, and though the area has no seating, many bring their own canvas chairs or picnic blankets and claim areas all their own. arriving early can ensure some amazing views of the homestretch and clubhouse turn, but spots along the barrier are usually long claimed by the diehard fans when the rest of the crowd begins to arrive.
TIER TWO tickets are a bit more expensive, slightly more limited in number, and provide entry to the grandstand. this area is located along the other side of the homestretch and has its own roofed seating area - with much coveted views - among other specific perks, especially for those who pay an annual membership fee to the tutshill club ( show your badge and gain access to the highest levels of the stand and a private rooftop bar ). where the best tier one can do for food and drink are trucks and beers and wheels that are dotted throughout the circle, grandstand ticket holders have access to actual stands and makeshift bars of a slightly more upscale nature, all complete with their own theme and private seating. they’re also the only people with access to the parade ring, where hippogriffs are led around by their jockets and put on show before each race. bookmakers are located at raceside stands that are usually swamped by the crowd, and their rates are known to be a bit more favourable than the tier one bookies tend to be.
TIER THREE tickets are the most expensive of all and are limited to 500. they provide entry to the large building - the ministers stand - that overlooks the final furlong. you can’t just buy your way into this area, and usually have to be personally invited by event organisers to purchase the very limited tickets, of which there’s usually a max per person. though it lacks an outside area ( and thus the raceside views that many tier one & two ticket holders look forward to ), those that actually do get invited to buy tier three packages are fully aware of what they forfeit in choosing to do so. they’re usually the type of people completely fine with trading the carnival and crowd mingling for the air conditioned bars inside ( complete with golden carpets and impressive chandeliers ) and dozens of private balconies from where they can watch the race in full. food and drink inside of the ministers stand is, of course, free, and of the highest quality, and of course there’s no expectation for anyone enjoying this exclusive area to queue and wait for such a thing - suited servers area expected to take care of the needs of the ticket holders before they even know what they need, and usually perform that action fairly well. the bookmakers inside here are also privately hired, and they tend to offer better rates than the ones found anywhere else, because of course they do.
OUT OF CHARACTER :
this event officially starts on sunday the 10th of july at 6pm gmt. click this link to see what that translates to for your timezone ! the plan is for it to last two weeks, ending on the 24th of july.
as always, no character is actually required to attend, but it’s obviously open to all ! i encourage you to throw everyone into the mix !
this is a dash only event, and the section for derby outfits ( think summer dresses, full suits and fascinators - searching racecourse style on google images or pinterest will help you out loads, if you’re unfamiliar with it ) can be found in the main discord. characters may not go full throttle and that’s ok, but it’s a fun opportunity to do something a bit different, i think ! you are not required to pause any current threads, but please make sure to tag appropriately.
event related starters ( including private ones ) can be tagged broadly with nox.event028 if posted to the dash, but if you’d like to go farther and tag the exact area your character has bought tickets for, feel free to use nox.tier1, nox.tier2 and nox.tier3. the location for anyone who tags it is the tutshill racecourse.
if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please don’t hesitate to send them my way ! and please like this post once you’ve read it !

The Darkening Age : The Christian Destruction of the Classical World by Catherine Nixey
A New York Times Notable Book - A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice Named a Book of the Year by the Telegraph, the Spectator, the Observer, and BBC History Magazine.
In Harran, the locals refused to convert. They were dismembered, their limbs hung along the town's main street. In Alexandria, zealots pulled the elderly philosopher-mathematician Hypatia from her chariot and flayed her to death with shards of broken pottery. Not long before, their fellow Christians had invaded the city's greatest temple, smashing its world-famous statues and destroying all that was left of Alexandria's Great Library. Today we refer to Christianity's conquest of the West as a "triumph." But this victory entailed an orgy of destruction in which Jesus's followers attacked and suppressed classical culture, helping to pitch Western civilization into a thousand-year-long decline. In The Darkening Age, Catherine Nixey brilliantly resurrects this lost history, offering a wrenching account of the rise of Christianity and its terrible cost. "A feast of tales of murder, vandalism and] willful destruction . . . Nixey has a great story to tell, and she tells it exceptionally well." -- Guardian " A] bold, dazzling and provocative book." -- Peter Frankopan, best-selling author of The Silk Roads.

The Immortality Key : The Secret History of the Religion with No Name by Brian C. Muraresku
A groundbreaking, controversial dive into the role psychedelics have played in the human experience of the Divine and the development of religion throughout Western history. The Immortality Key connects the lost, psychedelic sacrament of Greek religion to early Christianity--exposing the true origins of Western Civilization. In the tradition of unsolved historical mysteries like David Grann's Killers of the Flower Moon and Douglas Preston's The Lost City of the Monkey God, Brian Muraresku's 10-year investigation takes the reader through Greece, Germany, Spain, France and Italy, offering unprecedented access to the hidden archives of the Louvre and the Vatican along the way. In The Immortality Key, Muraresku explores a little-known connection between the best-kept secret in Ancient Greece and Christianity. A secret with the capacity to revolutionize our understanding of the past and chart a bold, new course for the future. Before Jerusalem, before Rome, before Mecca--there was Eleusis: the spiritual capital of the ancient world. It promised immortality to Plato and the rest of Athens' greatest minds with a very simple formula: drink this potion, see God. Shrouded in secrecy for millennia, the Ancient Greek sacrament was buried when the newly Christianized Roman Empire obliterated Eleusis in the fourth century AD. Renegade scholars in the 1970s claimed the Greek potion was psychedelic, just like the original Christian Eucharist that replaced it. In recent years, vindication for the disgraced theory has been quietly mounting in the laboratory. The rapidly growing field of archaeological chemistry has proven the ancient use of visionary drugs. And with a single dose of psilocybin, the psycho-pharmacologists at Johns Hopkins and NYU are now turning self-proclaimed atheists into instant believers. With convincing analysis and a captivating spirit of quest, Muraresku mines science, classical literature, biblical scholarship and art to deliver the hidden key to eternal life, bringing us to what clinical psychologist William Richards calls "the edge of an awesomely vast frontier." Featuring a Foreword by Graham Hancock, the New York Times bestselling author of America Before: The Key to Earth's Lost Civilization.

Medusa : Solving the Mystery of the Gorgon by Stephen R. Wilk
Medusa, the Gorgon, who turns those who gaze upon her to stone, is one of the most popular and enduring figures of Greek mythology. Long after many other figures from Greek myth have been forgotten, she continues to live in popular culture. In this fascinating study of the legend of Medusa, Stephen R. Wilk begins by refamiliarizing readers with the story through ancient authors and classical artwork, then looks at the interpretations that have been given of the meaning of the myth through the years. A new and original interpretation of the myth is offered, based upon astronomical phenomena. The use of the gorgoneion, the Face of the Gorgon, on shields and on roofing tiles is examined in light of parallels from around the world, and a unique interpretation of the reality behind the gorgoneion is suggested. Finally, the history of the Gorgon since classical times is explored, culminating in the modern use of Medusa as a symbol of Female Rage and Female Creativity.
