It happened when Wally was dating this other girl, who turned out to be a terrible person who isolated him from everyone, to the point that he didn't even show up at Nigel's parents funeral. Which made Nigel pretty mad, and he went confronting the other directly.

They both were in a terrible mental state, both stressed, sad, angry and, well, stupid things happen. Stupid things that helped the situation. Stupid things that made Wally want out of that relationship and Nigel wanting to help him.
