Storytime!

The ACTUAL storytime I wanted to share because of that poll.

This isn't really a case of me winning a trivia contest thing, but it is so perfectly *me* that I wanted to share.

Back in high school, we threw a yearly winter carnival, during which I mostly just tried to avoid participation and hiding in whatever odd corner I could find.

But one year they dragged me out into the light of the classrooms, and I decided I'd at least participate in the Trivial Pursuit games being played.

At one point, someone was asked the question, "What is triskaidekaphobia the fear of?" and sure, most people reading that right now know what that word is, but to a bunch of high school students in the 90s? Not a single one of them had an ounce of a clue.

Welll...exactly ONE single student knew. A single student me. Because that's who I am. I knew that word. Of course I knew that word, even then. Y'all know that word by sheer proximity to me, if nothing else.

And I am internally *screaming* because the person being asked didn't know, they thought they might know, they wanted to try and figure it out, but they were NOWHERE CLOSE.

And everyone else around the table was the same, once the answeree had kinda given up, and everyone else was wondering what that word could possibly be.

Meanwhile, I'm sitting on my side like Bart Simpson being tormented with the Happy Little Elves

Because I couldn't just blurt out the answer to someone else's question. Not yet.

But finally, they officially gave up, "Okay, okay, Foe, you've been flailing and thumping your head on the desk for five minutes, what is the answer??"

"THIRTEEN. FEAR OF THE NUMBER THIRTEEN."

"...How in the FUCK do you know that??"

And the answer is simple, because 13 is my lucky number. I love the number 13. I am a triskaidekaphile.

I’m sorry everyone. I didn’t like any prompt from any list today, so I decided to do a Friday the 13th pinup with a twist. While searching, I found the “Friday Thirteenth Jinx” drawing from a 1913 newspaper. I just couldn’t figure out how to make a skeleton-bodied creature have a shapely pinup body, so it turned into a mess (plus drawing a ladder perplexed me). Oh well, on to tomorrow!

Xavier: *distant shrieking intensifies*

Wednesday: Mm. A debilitating fear of—

Enid: Long words?

Wednesday: *hint of a smile* Exactly. That’s my smart girl.

Enid: 🥰

Wednesday: Now then, Uncle Fester should be arriving at any moment with a semi full of stray black cats. Remember to herd them in front of people. I’ll take care of the mirrors.

Enid: Okay babe, but like, for not being a fan Friday the Thirteenth, you sure do go all out for it.

Wednesday: *sniffs* One need not necessarily approve of a holiday to enjoy it.

The two pause as Xavier’s distant shrieking is abruptly cut off by the screech of brakes and the sound of metal impacting whiny artist.

Wednesday: What luck. That’s Uncle Fester now. Shall we?

Enid: Sure thing! And by the way, happy Friday the Thirteenth, babycakes.

Wednesday: *snorts* A miserable Friday the Thirteenth to you as well, mi corazón.

Enid slips on a pair of noise-cancelling headphones and links pinkies with Wednesday. Together they head for the accident parked semi, leaving a wake of shattered glass as a yowling black tide of cats floods the streets of Jericho.

Today is Friday the 13th. As we write every time, this was popularised after the First World War, combining the unique British 13-phobia (triskaidekaphobia) and the tradition of avoiding Friday as the day of execution. Before that, in France and elsewhere, 13 was a lucky number symbolising longevity. It was a standard theme for lucky postcards.
