Two years into his tenure as Head Coach, three questions Walter Bowen will have to answer this season
Jasmine Downey, staff writer
Question number 1: Will the Nighthawks finally make the playoffs after a six-year drought?
I know, I know, we’re starting off strong, but it’s the question everyone wants answered. Six years ago in 2018, the Nighthawks were ousted from the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Colorado Avalanche, and then-GM Howard Gagnon cleaned house, trading most of his star players across the league, trading down for picks in the draft, and firing beloved head coach Erik Demers, who then went on to win the Stanley Cup with two different teams in the years since. After the disastrous following year, a spate of injuries and awful coaching from replacement coach Alexander Stuart, the Nighthawks landed in a squarely mediocre position in the standings, and only got worse from there.
Recently, with new GM Isaiah Chambers, head coach Walter Bowen, who has not done anything to warrant firing (yet) and the peaceful transference of power to owner Arthur Lindsay, the Nighthawks have been getting slightly better, both on the ice and in the front office. They picked Anatoly Zikov 2nd overall in the 2021 draft, and while waiting for his KHL contract to end, have been slowly piecing together a team that looks vaguely like the beginnings of a playoff-caliber club.
However, now that we know Zikov is on his way over, what do we need Bowen to do this season?
First of all, the Nighthawks deserve to make the playoffs this season. Michael Houck and Lee Bartlett aren’t getting any younger. Bartlett hasn’t had the opportunity to play in many playoff games, after his late-season injury kept him out of the 2017 playoffs, and the 2018 series against LA and then Colorado were pretty short-lived, and Houck has played [checks NHL.com] zero total playoff games. Plus, Zikov is a potential generational talent and a near lock for the Hall of Fame, so why not get him some playoff games right off the bat? Some of the kids on this team — and there are a lot of kids on this team — should also get some experience playing games that actually have consequences. If Bowen wants to keep this job, the Nighthawks need the playoffs.
2. Special teams
The Nighthawks’ penalty kill last year… well, we all saw it. It had holes bigger than the ones in the ozone layer and problems you could see from space, and the only reason it wasn’t dead last was because of Simon Dahlvig. Assistant coach Chelsea Sheppard has taken over the special teams position for now, but if there aren’t any major improvements, Bowen might need to take drastic measures.
It wasn’t as though the power play was much better; at 26th in the league, it was an insufficient group. Things are looking up with the acquisition of Michael Yeung in the offseason, who was a force on the Rangers' power play, and it’s clear that the Nighthawks are hoping for some of that magic to translate to the ice in Arizona. But Bowen has a lot of work to do with the kids; Yeung alone certainly can't fix that.
3. Nic Proulx
There’s no limit to the amount of sympathy we can extend Proulx, but we also want to see the Nighthawks play well. With limp numbers for the past two years and zero chemistry with every line Bowen tried him on, he’s been something of a stick in the mud for the Nighthawks these past two years. An upcoming RFA, if he wants to stay in Arizona with the team that drafted him, he is desperately going to need a huge change in his play.
Will it be Zikov? Will they put him on Ezra Page’s wing for the millionth time, hoping something will finally work? Will Lee Bartlett’s incessant fathering finally produce a happy, well-rounded hockey player? We’ve seen flashes, brief, brief flashes of brilliance from Proulx, bare moments of the athlete we know we can be and that we saw in his career in the Q, as captain of the Voltigeurs. We want that all the time. If Bowen can do something to bring that out, we might have on our hands the longest-tenured coach in the NHL today.

-Good morning, Nic. I see you’re ready to start!-
“I don’t think I am. Nope, definitely not. What if they think I’m boring, or too focused on Parallax, what if they all just decide to go home? They’re all going to hate me!”
-Don’t you think you’re being a little dramatic?-
“Am I though? … Okay, yeah, maybe a bit. Get it together, Nic. They all signed up to meet you. You’ve got this.”
-Are you quite done?-
“I’m solid. Let’s go meet my future partner!”

❍❍❍ TV MOVIE ❍❍❍
The first national color broadcast (the 1954 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 1, 1954. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 1965, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 19402, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season. ❍❍❍ Formats and Genres ❍❍❍ See also: List of genres § Film and television formats and genres Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional MOVIE). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows.[citation needed] In 2022, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film.[5] Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 2022, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television.

Bangkok Dangerous (2008)
In this remake of the Pang Brothers’ own Thai film of the same name, Joe (Nicolas Cage) is a killer for hire with 4 simple rules:
1. Don’t ask questions. 2. Don’t take an interest in people outside of work. 3. Erase every trace. 4. Know when to get out.
On his latest job in Bangkok however, his heart begins to warm for Kong (Shahkrit Yamnarm), his hired local help, and a pharmacy worker named Fon (Charlie Yeung). As he completes his contracts, he also must struggle with this newfound conflict between his feelings, and his code.
»»————- ★ ————-««
Hi. I’m sorry I wrote so much but I just have so much to say again OTL.
Okay to be honest, I wasn’t looking forward to watching this. I’d only read poor reviews, and from the description, his look, and because Saturn Films movies are really hit or miss, I just wasn’t interested. But! I was pleasantly surprised by the ending and it changed how I felt about and enjoyed the film a lot, although it was really rough going most of the time.
-my one brain cell: ghost rider.
Frankly I found every character pretty boring, and it took way too long for things to get interesting. The whole point of the movie is that Joe breaks his code of not getting involved emotionally with others, which does happen over the course of the story, but it’s really not executed well and I struggled to really care about Joe. The transition from unfeeling assassin to Joe caring for Kong in particular feels too sudden, and there isn’t really any build up to it. The viewer isn’t shown Joe struggling at all really with his emotions vs. His code, so it feels like a very random decision for him to take on Kong as an apprentice, rather than because he cares for him. It also doesn’t help that Kong is a snarky asshole for most of the film, and I kind of hated him lol. All he did was annoy Joe, and not in a loveable way. Why Joe would come to care for him I’m not really sure, and it’s not like the film shows us why at all.
I rolled my eyes at Joe’s romance with Fon because I was a bit scared their language barrier would make the relationship super cringey, but I have to admit they were cute. All of their scenes together had barely any dialogue, and it really allowed their chemistry to shine. I think they really sold that they liked each other a lot and it was sweet. It was much easier to see why he was breaking his code for Fon than Kong. However, like I said I found both of them pretty boring as we got so little information about who they were aside from how they were connected to Joe, so I didn’t really get to come to like them like Joe was.
Back to Joe’s emotional struggles being super unfulfilling, I found Nic’s performance to be really lacking. Now because we weren’t given any scenes in the movie to actually see Joe being at conflict with himself, I’m inclined to believe it was more because of the direction he was given rather than his own acting choices, but man was he wooden. Until Joe met Fon I thought this movie was just another instance of Cage deciding to act terribly for whatever reason, but then the scenes with Fon were really nice. I know he’s supposed to be an unfeeling assassin, but the whole point of the movie is that he gives in to his feelings!!!! How is the viewer supposed to believe he comes to care for these people when we’re given the impression that he has no capacity for feelings at all??? I think the way they handled all that really did a disservice to the ending, which I'm gunna go more into under a spoiler cut at the end because this review isn’t long enough already.
So! Things I really enjoyed: the view. All of the nighttime shots of the city and more rural areas were beautiful. The daytime scenes at the end of the film were just as nice as well. Every outdoor shot was so colourful and saturated and really gave the feeling of a lively city, and I loved the contrast of that to the soft lighting and muted colours of Joe’s place.
The assassination scenes were already really cool! Joe used a different methods for each target that were all really fun to watch, and they were set up really well I my opinion.
Also I just have to say it..... this movie was lowkey ASMR??? Idk how many of you like ASMR but I do, and this movie had a weird amount of instances where I was like, is this.... on purpose?? Is this happening?? Folley team A+. Nic spoke so softly, there was tons of ambient city/outdoor noises, quiet scenes where objects with classic ASMR triggers were being handled and had audio to match...... it created a weirdly calming mood sometimes for an assassin movie lmao.
Because I’m crazy and have a problem, I made a video compilation of a lot of the ASMR-y parts??? Some of the sounds also had action movie background music so I didn’t include them all but....
Enjoy this Nicolas Cage ASMR?
youtube
Overall this movie was better than I was anticipating. The kills were really cool, the action scenes were fun, and it was beautiful to look it. But the characters were all rather boring, and I found it difficult to care about what was happening to them when we were given so little about them to care for. I actually think a second watch after interpreting the ending how I did would make the movie more enjoyable.
Rating:
Spoiler cut for me talking about the ending!!! I think the ending is cool enough I don’t wanna spoil it if you don’t want to read it. ^^
Alright so now on to how I thought the ending could have been better lol. I feel like too many of my reviews where I have issues like this turn into essays but I just have to explain my thinking so I’m sorry this is super long again.
So like I said, Joe coming across as an unfeeling assassin who discovers he can feel I think really did a disservice to the ending. I’m probably going waaaaay too deep into what purpose the ending was supposed to serve, but this is art and this is my interpretation! Lol. After seeing the ending and sitting on it for a bit, what it told me was that Joe wasn’t unfeeling, but actually a guy with a lot of feelings, and that the code was there to help him avoid hurting himself and others. Killing himself at the end painted quite the tragic picture of Joe hating what breaking his code had done to the people he had come to care for so much, he would rather die than deal with how it would effect his life thereafter. It was a really great instance of the movie finally showing Joe’s struggles, and I dearly wish we got more of that throughout the movie. Because we never saw Joe’s inner conflicts, it made the ending not shocking because we now see how deeply Joe’s feelings and decisions affected him after a bunch of emotional build up, but shocking because it didn’t really seem to fit with the character we were shown the whole film.
Ahhh it was just frustrating that I spent all the movie finding Joe such a boring character when we could have had a build up to the ending that would have made it a lot more impactful, and Joe more interesting. Apparently there is an alternate ending which from reading the Wiki summary, idk if it would have made the movie better or worse if I had seen that ending first instead.
#bangkok dangerous#nicolas cage#review#movie review#zoinks i wrote an essay again sorry!!!! but man i just rly needed to explain my feelings abt the ending#so much squandered potential :(#yes i spent too much time making that asmr video and i have a problem

Nicola ‘Nic’ Yeung was raised in the heart of Roaring Heights by two successful parents. She “didn’t apply herself” in school, instead choosing to spend her time immersed in fantasies of her own making, scraping by with only passable grades. While working as a barista after graduating high school, Nic began posting her stories online, eventually teaching herself basic programming skills to develop text-based adventure games and branching out into modding best-selling games to add new quests.
It was in one of her online forums that she met Max, another avid modder who endorsed her quest mods and offered his help programming and animating future ideas she might have. The two hit it off and began creating bigger and more complex mods for their favorite games until they finally decided to meet IRL. Nic and Max dated for the next 3 years, during which they formed their own small indie company, Shadoware Studios. Their debut title, Parallax, won Best Debut Indie Game. Nic was only 25 at the time. The much anticipated sequel, Parallax II: Call of Thoggus is set to release next year.
Though she hates crowds and being the center of attention, Nic is easily in her element when advocating for her game and characters. She’s truly passionate about what she does (she’s loathe to call it “work”) and will fight tooth and nail for her studio. Nic longs to find someone who understands and accepts her passion, but someone who can also be a balancing force in her life. Max cares just as deeply for Shadoware and, ultimately, the two never made time for each other outside of work. When it became clear it was either their relationship or Shadoware, both equally and unequivocally made the choice to pick their true love over each other. Nic needs someone who can understand this and not be threatened by her devotion to Shadoware (and her close relationship with an ex), but who also encourages and entices her to live outside her fantasy realm.
Nic rarely makes time for her personal life outside of work and has thus decided to become the next bachelorette in the hopes that the producers can help her meet her match.

April 15, 2017--Bangkok Dangerous
Bangkok Dangerous comes to us from the fairly recent land of 2008, and is a remake of the 2000 Thai film of the same name. It’s the story of a hit man named Joe who breaks all of his own rules while working several jobs in Bangkok. He bonds with his “disposable” errand boy Kong and begins teaching him the trade. Then he also falls in love with a deaf-mute pharmacist, who, of course, runs in terror when she finds out what he is. Her terror makes him realize the full weight of what he does and has become, and well, there’s no happy endings here, folks.
Overall, this is a solid action flick, if nothing new. The cast does an excellent job. Nic does his usual bad guy with morals shtick, Shahkrit Yamnarm plays an excellent sketchy errand boy, and Charlie Yeung‘s Fon is the sweetest and most lovable pharmacist I’ve seen in a movie. The tension gets played just right, and while there’s nothing exceptional characterwise, we do get to see Cage’s character slowly become a better person, as he starts to have trouble pulling the trigger on his last job, and winds up rescuing Kong when he gets kidnapped. The ending is actually quite tragic and moving (I’d say spoilers ahead, but if it’s been out for more than five years, it’s a bit late for that). Joe finds himself face to face with the head villain, with no way out. He’s also realized exactly what he’s done, and is clearly having trouble with the weight of his sins. In a “pull the trigger already” sequence, he pulls the villain close and puts a single bullet through both their brains. Very dramatic. Three out of five Nicolas Cages. Good flick, but nothing exceptional.

The transport zipped away leaving thirteen hopefuls on the lawn awaiting their bachelorette. Nic sucked in a deep breath and opened the door.
“Now or never,” she whispered and crossed out into the shade of the porch.
“Hello all. I’m excited to meet each of you! I’m going to be taking these next few moments to greet each of you individually so, please, be patient. There’s a lot of you and only one of me to go around!”
A few nervous chuckles reached her ears and at least one delighted snort of laughter.

Daniel's handshake is a bit distracted as his eyes scan the landscape but his greeting is warm and genuine. “I’ve always heard Greymont Bay is an amazing place to explore. I hope we’ll get some time to take in the sights together.”
Marcello is showing something to Trey and misses his call to the front so Maite, who is used to keeping track of many things at once, seizes the opportunity to warmly greet the bachelorette with a glowing smile and firm handshake.
“Hey man, you okay?” Noemi nudges Brandon.
He sucks in a wavering deep breath. “I’ve been so hopeful Nic is the one for me, I didn’t stop to think about all the competition. You’re all so intimidating!”
While Brandon has his existential crisis in the shade of one of the aspen trees, Owen takes Nic’s hand and stares a moment, seemingly lost for words.
“Hi?” she finally says.
“Sorry,” he shakes his head with a smile. “I was drawn to you from the beginning but being here in person with you…your smile is breathtaking.”

As an avid plant enthusiast, a hobby passed along to her from her father, Nic is immediately drawn to the extensive landscaping surrounding the inn and makes a beeline for the pergola out back. Little does she yet know how many fretful moments will be spent beneath those wisteria.
She heads inside a short time later and spends a few hours playing a video game beating up a controller while she tries not to think about tomorrow. When she finds she can no longer focus on the objectives, she decides a dip in the pool might be a better distraction and hurries to change.
“Not looking, not looking, not looking,” she whispers to herself as she passes the grey curtain on the wall. “I saw your last production, I know what’s under there.”
-Oh, so you don’t want to see all those contestants beforehand?-
“Wait, you mean I can…” She cuts herself short and groans. “You’re just teasing. You’re still going to make me wait until tomorrow.”
-You know it.-
With that in mind she heads out to the pool. Hopefully none of the contestants are looking for grace and elegance because that belly flop is anything but.
