Two years into his tenure as Head Coach, three questions Walter Bowen will have to answer this season
Jasmine Downey, staff writer
Question number 1: Will the Nighthawks finally make the playoffs after a six-year drought?
I know, I know, we’re starting off strong, but it’s the question everyone wants answered. Six years ago in 2018, the Nighthawks were ousted from the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Colorado Avalanche, and then-GM Howard Gagnon cleaned house, trading most of his star players across the league, trading down for picks in the draft, and firing beloved head coach Erik Demers, who then went on to win the Stanley Cup with two different teams in the years since. After the disastrous following year, a spate of injuries and awful coaching from replacement coach Alexander Stuart, the Nighthawks landed in a squarely mediocre position in the standings, and only got worse from there.
Recently, with new GM Isaiah Chambers, head coach Walter Bowen, who has not done anything to warrant firing (yet) and the peaceful transference of power to owner Arthur Lindsay, the Nighthawks have been getting slightly better, both on the ice and in the front office. They picked Anatoly Zikov 2nd overall in the 2021 draft, and while waiting for his KHL contract to end, have been slowly piecing together a team that looks vaguely like the beginnings of a playoff-caliber club.
However, now that we know Zikov is on his way over, what do we need Bowen to do this season?
First of all, the Nighthawks deserve to make the playoffs this season. Michael Houck and Lee Bartlett aren’t getting any younger. Bartlett hasn’t had the opportunity to play in many playoff games, after his late-season injury kept him out of the 2017 playoffs, and the 2018 series against LA and then Colorado were pretty short-lived, and Houck has played [checks NHL.com] zero total playoff games. Plus, Zikov is a potential generational talent and a near lock for the Hall of Fame, so why not get him some playoff games right off the bat? Some of the kids on this team — and there are a lot of kids on this team — should also get some experience playing games that actually have consequences. If Bowen wants to keep this job, the Nighthawks need the playoffs.
2. Special teams
The Nighthawks’ penalty kill last year… well, we all saw it. It had holes bigger than the ones in the ozone layer and problems you could see from space, and the only reason it wasn’t dead last was because of Simon Dahlvig. Assistant coach Chelsea Sheppard has taken over the special teams position for now, but if there aren’t any major improvements, Bowen might need to take drastic measures.
It wasn’t as though the power play was much better; at 26th in the league, it was an insufficient group. Things are looking up with the acquisition of Michael Yeung in the offseason, who was a force on the Rangers' power play, and it’s clear that the Nighthawks are hoping for some of that magic to translate to the ice in Arizona. But Bowen has a lot of work to do with the kids; Yeung alone certainly can't fix that.
3. Nic Proulx
There’s no limit to the amount of sympathy we can extend Proulx, but we also want to see the Nighthawks play well. With limp numbers for the past two years and zero chemistry with every line Bowen tried him on, he’s been something of a stick in the mud for the Nighthawks these past two years. An upcoming RFA, if he wants to stay in Arizona with the team that drafted him, he is desperately going to need a huge change in his play.
Will it be Zikov? Will they put him on Ezra Page’s wing for the millionth time, hoping something will finally work? Will Lee Bartlett’s incessant fathering finally produce a happy, well-rounded hockey player? We’ve seen flashes, brief, brief flashes of brilliance from Proulx, bare moments of the athlete we know we can be and that we saw in his career in the Q, as captain of the Voltigeurs. We want that all the time. If Bowen can do something to bring that out, we might have on our hands the longest-tenured coach in the NHL today.

2022 Top reads and listens
How do you say you were off work for ½ the year without saying it? By the sheer number of books I’ve read and listened to in the past year! With a possible 2 or 3 books still left before the year end, I’ve read or listened to 447 books, my most ever. That equates to 99,113 pages, according to Goodreads, with the shortest book being 15 pages and the longest 2,132 (an anthology). The average book length was 221 pages, and that seems about right to me
My 2022 reading year was made up of binges and actually making a dent in my TBR. Don’t get me wrong, my TBR is still out of control, but I did make headway into it. This was done by grabbing authours off the list and then going through all the books of theirs I had. Now, this lead to me grabbing more books, let’s face it, when you have a book in the series, or more than one, and it is good, you move on to the rest of those books. All I can say is thank goddess for Kobo plus and Scribd (ebook and audio) as I plummeted into series and didn’t break the bank 😊
Coming up with a top ten for the year was brutal because I enjoyed so many books, but, I did narrow it down. It is a good mix of new releases in the year and books from my TBR that I enjoyed <3
Tumblr media
I finally got to GA Aiken’s Dragon Kin series and couldn’t have loved it more! What A Dragon Should Know was my favourite, and considering where the Scarred Earth sage went, it was timely for me to get these books under my belt. These were audiobooks and available on Scribd
Tumblr media
Bounty by Kristen Ashley was one of my first listens of the year as I finished up the Colorado Mountain series. So many books were great in the series, but these two stuck with me, maybe it was the great soundtrack they presented, or how they fit together, either way, they left an impression. Audiobook listen from audible
Tumblr media
While catching up on the Brooklyn series by Sarina Bowen, she released Shenanigans, and this book had so many feelings and fun! You never knew if the couple was going to have you in tears or make you laugh, and that was just perfect. This was an audio ARC listen, ebook available in Kobo plus
Tumblr media
Where I Belong by J Daniels sat on my TBR in paperback AND ebook, and I was finally able to work it into my schedule. Loved this enemies to lovers, and the cast of characters it brought to us. Part of the binge of the Alabama series, this series stared was wonderful. Ebook read on Kobo (though the series is now in KU)
Tumblr media
Curse of the Dragon by Eliza Gayle first caught my attention because of the amazing cover. Then when I got the story, it was better than I ever expected! The fantasy world created is amazing and the characters have such depth, loved it, loved it, loved it. This was an ARC ebook read, available in KU
Tumblr media
When Elle Kennedy announced she was releasing Misfit, I knew I’d grab it, but I was in no rush. I should have rushed because this prep school was so much going on above and below the surface, it sucked me totally in! Audio listen on audible
Tumblr media
Eve Langlais created a fantasy world for her Magic and Kings series and I immediately fell for it. The Barbarian King’s Assassin was a wonderful introduction to the series, and had a great plot and storyline. Cannot wait for more in this world! Audio listen on Scribd, ebook available in Kobo plus
Tumblr media
Speaking of TBR reads, Kate’s Secret by Kallpyso Masters has been sitting on my bookshelf since 2017. When I noticed it was available in Kobo plus, I grabbed it, preferring to read in ebook over paperback. Then I proceeded to kick myself for waiting so long to get to it because it was amazing. It seamlessly blended the real and mystical world, while providing a solid second chance romance. Ebook read in Kobo plus
Tumblr media
I am slowly working through NJ Walters’ backlist, and hit the Salvation Pack. Wolf in his Heart was an emotional read and my favourite of the series. There was so much that touching in the story, while not being angsty, and the family and pack bonds were so strong. Ebook read in Scribd
Tumblr media
Speaking of emotional reads, Zoe York released Fearless at Heart, book 4 in the Kincade’s of Pine Harbour. This is a second chance, twenty years later, first love reunited, and so much more! While the flashbacks held deep feelings, the current and future were the real emotional kickers in this book. Ebook ARC read, available in Kobo plus.

"The Green Curtain Dress" is arguably one of the most iconic costumes ever created. It was designed by Walter Plunkett for use on Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara in the 1939 film Gone with the Wind.
It's shocking to think that a gown that has become so iconic in our eyes would go on to be used again. Still, we must remember that before the advent of video and streaming, people saw a movie in the theater and rarely saw it again.
It is not known how many copies of the curtain dress were produced. At least one copy of the costume does seem to have gone on to be altered and used in the 1946 film Bedlam on Anna Lee as Nell Bowen.
The gown has clearly undergone some adjustments. The hoop skirt is no longer worn, and thus, the skirt falls much differently. The caplet on the left shoulder has been removed, large cuffs have been added to the end of the sleeves, and the cording around the waist and shoulder have been removed. However, looking at the collar and the seams of the dress makes it evident that it is indeed the same costume – a fact that is confirmed in the audio commentary of Bedlam.
One copy of the curtain dress is in storage at the David O. Selznick collection at The Harry Ransom Center in Texas, where $30,000 was raised for its restoration.
To properly restore the gown, textile conservator Cara Varnell took great pains in determining what was original to the dress and what was not. Of the dress at the Ransom Center, she says:
"There are several rows of machine stitching on the waistline that don't make sense. There are extensive alterations, and it's not clear when or why they were done."
Is the gown that the Ransom Center owns the same one used in Bedlam? Either way – the dress owned by the Ransom Center is a reminder that even the most exceptional pieces get altered and changed.
To learn more about the conservation of this wonderful dress, visit the Ransom Center Blog.
What do you think are the most iconic costumes created for film? Let us know!

Breaking Bad’s final season is 10 years old. It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Walter White’s story came to a close. All of the deceit, violence, plot twists, and puzzling cliffhangers the series provided still occupy a mountain of space in our heads, just begging for yet another rewatch. In the time since the final episodes of the beloved crime drama aired, no show has quite matched the exquisite pacing and pitch-perfect tone of the eight episodes that concluded Walter’s time as the meth kingpin of New Mexico. Still, even amongst an array of masterpiece hours of television in the second half of the show’s fifth and final season, the Rian Johnson-directed epic “Ozymandias” stands tall above all else.
“Ozymandias” starts with a nearly 15-minute scene in which Hank (Dean Norris) is killed by Uncle Jack (Michael Bowen) and his gang of Nazis, Jesse (Aaron Paul) is essentially sold into meth manufacturing slavery to Todd Alquist (Jesse Plemons), and Walt wanders through the desert in search of transportation back home. The sheer amount of action during this time period would be enough for most shows already, but Breaking Bad was just getting started.
The scene when Walter arrives home to Walter Jr. (R.J. Mitte) and Skyler (Anna Gunn), apoplectic and deliriously wondering why they won’t believe him about Hank’s death, is where the episode truly enters the pantheon of TV greatness and even ascends to a higher legend regardless of medium. Skyler has decided that she simply won’t stand for Walt’s intimidation tactics and disregard for the White family any longer, and this is when “Ozymandias” turns into one of the most bone-chilling horror flicks of the 21st century.
youtube
Fans of Vince Gilligan’s show will instantly recognize the cadence of the scene from the jump. Walter goes into persuasive essay mode when Skyler makes the heavy claim that Walt killed Hank. Walt always has one more lie in the chamber, one more plea for survival when his time is up. This time his elaborate, emotional explanations are raw and real, but why would Skyler know that? She’s had to play along with Walt’s games for five seasons now, and this time there is no turning back.
The camera closes in on the set of knives in the kitchen. Even as Walter paces back to the bedroom to pack his family’s belongings, Walter Jr. on his tail fishing for answers, Skyler stalks the weapons that are just mere meters away from her hands. The matriarch of the White family goes on the offensive, building a symbolic and literal barrier between herself, her son, and the criminal father whose immoral acts have multiplied for 60 episodes up to this point.
When Walt approaches Skyler with a lack of sincerity, she swings at her husband with the blade, slicing into the flesh of his hand. The look of unadulterated shock on Walt’s face is where the scene turns into a Kubrickian chill ride. Not a single note of music or background sound assaults the senses as Walter and Skyler commence years of frustration pent up inside of them, fighting for the handle of the killing object with their entire might. Cranston and Gunn are beyond bombastic in these 30 seconds of madness, culminating in Walter Jr. careening into the violence when he realizes his mother is overpowered.
For so much of the series, Walter Jr. views his father as an idol, a man he can admire for inspiration. On a dime, he’s able to flip his perception of his parents, saving the guardian who actually deserved his respect this whole time. This character development choice combines with Johnson’s decision to pan the camera slowly out from the family, coalescing into a frightening epiphany for Walter and the viewers at home: the nerdy science teacher from the pilot episode has transformed into an antagonist worthy of our shame.
“We’re a family.” As Walter bellows these heartbreaking words, the cries of baby Holly and Skyler paint the picture of what type of household Walter has decimated. A wife, son, and infant daughter are the victims of a mass murderer, a drug dealer, and a psychopath. Especially when juxtaposed with the cold open of the episode, when Walter and Skyler are planning mundane scheduling occurrences such as what to eat for dinner and vital, life-changing moments like what to name their unborn child, this horror scene defines the fall from grace that Gilligan so desperately set out to craft.
Walter Jr. calls the police on his father, and in a split second, Walter digs into his authentic self, kidnapping his daughter to gain leverage over Skyler one last time. When Skyler realizes what’s happened, she dashes outside and pounds on the window panes of the dilapidated truck Walter escapes in. The most menacing part of the exchange is Walt’s decision to forcibly back his way out of the driveway, ignoring the family SUV behind him. The red vehicle ends up halfway down the street, the sounds of screeching metal echoing in unison with the haunting score now being played in the background.
The weight of these sounds crescendos with Skyler’s begging for Walt to cede control of the baby. Anna Gunn’s performance here makes the entire scene, and it’s as beautifully acted as any clip in the show. She won multiple Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actress for the fifth season, but infinite adulation seems more apt. Gunn forces the audience to sympathize with her, even after some questionable decisions in the third and fourth seasons of the series.
These four minutes pack more story into their allotment than most shows do in an hour. We learn so much about all three characters, their motives, and where they are headed at the show’s cataclysm. The roller coaster Rian Johnson builds feels like a Rube Goldberg machine of horror. Every action causes a chain reaction that expounds upon the previous one. There’s no time for the audience to take a single breath, and we often have to make split-second emotional decisions about the characters we’ve all come to love at one point or another. Johnson has the gall to jostle with that profound connection and shatter the anti-hero trope that Walter White came to define. Cranston’s character is Jack Torrance, and we’re all whimpering Wendy.
“Ozymandias” is still the textbook example of television horror for the last 10 years and will be for at least another 10.

Nighthawks Weekly’s Projected 24-25 Roster
Jude Hartman, staff writer
AFTER A CRAPSHOOT of a 23-24 season filled with injury, drama, and Simon Dahlvig’s busiest season of his career playing 64 games, it was all but confirmed that the Arizona Nighthawks were going to enact some big changes.
And yet the team looks largely the same going into the slowest part of the offseason. Sure, there was the trade at the deadline that sent C Phillippe Lemelin to Dallas in a one-for-one for C Hector Morales, the acquisition of RW Michael Yeung during free agency, and the news that winger Hugh Bishop is coming off IR, but all this happened in the bottom half of the lineup. In the end, Walter Bowen is still head coach, Isaiah Chambers is still GM, and why Vezina-winner Simon Dahlvig accepted a trade to Arizona and then signed an extension here is, as always, a mystery.
Of course, the biggest news is that of Anatoly Zikov, the Russian-Kazakh center whose KHL contract ended last season. Though the Nighthawks have been infuriatingly tight-lipped regarding him and no word of an ELC has emerged yet, it’s widely assumed that he’ll be dressing in teal and orange on opening night 2024. So, with all that in mind, Nighthawks Weekly presents our projected roster for the 2024-25 season.
Forwards
Top line: Stanislav Dudek #52 - Lee Bartlett #21 - Mattias Almqvist #27
Look, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Alternate Captain Lee Bartlett’s top line was the Nighthawks’ top producing line in the 23-24 season, by a large margin. The guy’s a play-driving machine, the only moving part on an otherwise stale powerplay, and one of the best penalty killers in the NHL right now. When he’s on the ice, xGA% goes down by over 10%. The chemistry between Dudek and Almqvist can’t be denied either; just over half of Dudek’s 27 goals were assisted on by Almqvist.
2nd line: Michael Yeung #42 - Anatoly Zikov #? - Nicolas Proulx #14
It might be worth it to see if anything can get Nicolas Proulx going like he could in juniors, and if that thing is a Russian phenom, well, why not? We might sympathize with Proulx’s lack of production, but at some point, we hope to see the 2022 5th overall light the lamp like he used to. He topped his record skating speeds this year and if his trainer’s Instagram is to be believed, he’s only going to get faster. Yeung is a great addition to the team, a 26-year-old solid winger who’d already been taking younger players under his wing in New York, and we’d like to see him do the same with Zikov.
3rd line: Nick Torvalds #19 - Ezra Page #98 - Brodie Barnes #43
Page might be young, but he’s been in the league long enough that he’s gonna be able to center these two rookies. Calder winner two years ago and leading goal-scorer last year, Page is only getting better with age. If this is our third line center, then we might be golden. We expect to see Nick Torvalds, the 2023 1st rounder who spent last year lighting up the AHL, make the show this year. And as for Brodie Barnes, the 22-year-old college kid who only came down to Arizona last year to play for the Ringtails, why not give him a shot? He was certainly no Torvalds last year, but he’s a great two-way forward who can play either right or left with ease, and he deserves to get a chance.
4th line: Roger Smith-Sweeney #77 - Hector Morales #68 - Hugh Bishop #61
Put this line on the ice the second you see anyone even think about laying a hand on Zikov.
… I’m only half kidding. But really, this is a solid fourth line. Hector Morales was the return for Phillippe Lemelin to Dallas at last season’s trade deadline, and after racking up 4 goals and 7 assists in 16 games, the FO decided to sign him to a one-year deal, because why not? He’s a great fourth-line center that could certainly move to the third line, and Smith-Sweeney and Bishop are a proven pairing that can do some damage. Hopefully Bishop can stay healthy this year, because we’d love to see more of that combination.
Defensemen
1st pairing:
Dion Martinez #55 - Michael Houck #90
Martinez might have been labeled a reach when the Nighthawks drafted him in the first round in 2019, but he has simply proven everyone wrong. This pairing was on fire last year, and now with Houck expected to have an increased leadership role on the team after being given the A this offseason, expect to see major production from this pairing.
2nd pairing:
Howard McLaughlin #62 - Dennis Nadeau #71
The classic vet-rookie twofer. McLaughlin had decent numbers last year in 50 games for the Nighthawks as a rookie (8-17–25) but his immense production in the juniors still looms. Give him a solid defensive defenseman like Nadeau as a partner and you should see a meteoric rise across the board.
3rd pairing:
Trey O’Brien #15 - Logan Larocque #8
Larocque is another Ringtail that deserves a shot at the big leagues. After putting up a whopping +23 in the AHL last season, his fiery defense and incredible skating earn him our nomination to the show, or at least to a third pair.
Seventh defenseman:
Quincy Martineau
Martineau is a curious player. A graduate of Colgate University, Martineau seemingly appeared out of nowhere when the Nighthawks invited him to last year’s development camp and he blew everyone out of the water. He was a fantastic rotating defenseman last year, a shot-blocking machine on the penalty kill, and would be a great guy to keep on the lineup this year.
Goalies
Starting goaltender: Simon Dahlvig
Backup: Parker Wiley
Last season while Parker Wiley was out with an upper body injury, Simon Dahlvig went on an infamous eight-game point streak, starting every game for the Nighthawks during Wiley’s injury and putting up a seven-period shutout. He’s a Vezina winner, a Cup winner, and a future Hall-Of-Famer. He’s the starting goalie.
The backup shouldn’t be in question either: it’s Parker Wiley, who played well last year – at least for the 18 games that he did play. In the Nighthawks’ goalie pipeline, he’s the only one with NHL experience and that should put him head and shoulders above the rest of the group.
Considerations
AHL starting goaltender: Julian Richards #36
While Wiley is the clear backup, Richards might be a difficult player to cut for Bowen and Chambers. At 23, he’s been putting up .900+ save percentages for the Ringtails for the past 4 years and playing over 40 games a season for the past 3. He’ll be in the AHL, but whether they trade him or move Wiley, he won’t be there for much longer.
