Monster Hunter (2020)
Coming off of viewing half of Crank High Voltage, I wanted to watch a better movie, something less awful, and only sort of succeeded in my quest. Monster Hunter (2020) doesn't really succeed at being a good Monster Hunter movie, it was made by the guy who did the, 6 or so? Resident Evil movies, J.S. Sawyer I believe, and you can really tell that by how they tried to make this like, a horror movie. Which doesn't at all fit Monster Hunters tone. there's an extended section with Narscyllas (spider monsters) that's meant to be scary, they lay eggs in one of the military guys. that's another thing, besides like, 3 characters (Mila Jovovich, the main hunter, the other hunter) everyone is chaff to get killed quickly by monsters from a tail swipe or a bite or whatever it's odd.
Also the movie is very eh, US military centric, and probably kinda racist in some kinda way. minor issue though. coolest part of the movie easily when Rathalos destroys the US military I thought that was good, seeing it rip apart a tank.
Also also, the movie ends on a cliffhanger, it's sequel bait, nothing even happens enough in this movie for it feel solid by itself, like an hour in the plot has barely progressed because the entire spider section did nothing for the movie and could easily have been cut to free up 30 minutes
The graphical effects were pretty good though, like the Rathalos and Diablos looked really cool, that's a bonus.
You shouldn't watch this movie I think, maybe the second one will be better, I doubt it.

I've mentionned him in passing in the last costume log blog post as some ill-fated first attempt at a fursuit head, so it's only fair I actually showed him off at some point: here's Uncle Uncanny the Nargacuga in the flesh.
I started him in late 2020 as a little technique-learning project during a time where cons were dead and costume motivation was an all-time low. It's a funky little Nargacuga head all made from scratch! He's lined and everything, and I'd be crazy to call him bad because I know objectively he's a very handsome boy for a first attempt, but he always looked a little... funky. Despite all the flaws though, he was so dang fun to make that he paved the way for the Wurmple partial and other future projects, and was an invaluable learning experience! I'd never bring him out though because the actual WEARING experience is a hot mess. Like, the materials are so bad he's periodically falling apart despite never taking him out to an event. He's so hard to breathe in, too... So back to storage you go! Speaking of, good lord please periodically check your costume storage to make sure everything's a-ok. He's been in the same dry closet as everything else for years and for some reason the plastic bag he's been stored in was just casually FLAKING APART in a sticky, blooming mess (while everything else was just fine, including some other ANCIENT pieces in similar bags) . My hands feel so gross and smell like copper but he's survived just fine, thankfully. Seriously, though. Check your storage.
#fursuit#nargacuga#monster hunter#original content#ok seriously though sourcing materials during pandemic SUCKED#He's terrible superstore upholstery foam. terrible general fabric store fur.#terrible leftover EVA foam eyes because getting plastic for the eyes in 2020 was hell! terrible leftover plastidip to weatherproof them!#Barely joking when I say the best quality material on him is the lycra for the lining that was leftovers from another costume project

Monster Hunter (2020)
Most probably wouldn’t consider Monster Hunter good for valid reasons. I will acknowledge the movie's flaws while admitting I enjoyed it for what it is. There are some cool monster designs, exciting action scenes and unexpected turns. Today, that’s enough for me and I don’t think I’ll be the only one who says so.
U.S. Army Ranger Captain Natalie Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her United Nations security team are searching for a missing team of soldiers in the desert when they are suddenly transported to another world. On this hostile planet, humans co-exist with savage monsters of all shapes and sizes. Joining forces with a warrior from the New World (Tony Jaa), Artemis heads towards a mysterious tower in the distance. “The Hunter” was headed that way with his troupe of warriors before they became separated. Artemis hopes the tower is linked to the storm that ripped her away from Earth.
The neat thing about this movie is that Artemis and The Hunter don’t speak a common language. I mean, how could they? After realizing they’d rather stand together against the monsters that would eat, squish, incinerate or lay eggs inside them, our heroes team up. Most of the movie is about Artemis and The Hunter slowly learning to trust each other despite not being able to fully understand what the other is saying. Oh, and dodging the various monsters along the way. Actually, I wish the film showed off more monsters than it does, mostly because the big bad at the end is generic. It looks plenty cool, but the design is uninspired, particularly when compared to the Apceros, the Diablos or the Nerscyllas. Those creatures are memorable and unique, so you’re not even sure if they’re hostile or what their abilities might be. When/if our heroes have to fight them, you’ll have a great time learning what their weak points are and what the best strategy is.
I’ve never played any of the games the film is inspired by but if I were to guess, I’d say it captures the feel of them about as well as Paul W.S. Anderson’s other adaptation of a Capcom property: Resident Evil. That’s to say that the plot's nothing like it, but the visuals are there. I say this because we see plenty of weird-looking characters and people with weapons that probably wouldn’t make sense in real life but certainly look cool - The Hunter’s gigantic bow, for instance. It doesn’t make for a deep film, but as something you kick back and watch, it's certainly entertaining.
Where Monster Hunter loses points is during the last third, when we’re introduced to a Monster World inhabitant who speaks English. How he knows it doesn’t make much sense. It feels like a studio-mandated decision to make sure people would understand what’s going on, but come on. We spent over an hour of this movie piecing things together without anyone holding our hand. Why not have confidence in us paying attention all the way through? Monster Hunter also makes bizarre choices right at the end. The film ends. The credits start rolling. Then it starts up again and concludes. The credits roll once more only for a stinger that promises a sequel to pop up once the last name has scrolled past. The “first” conclusion wasn’t definitive. It was elegant in a way that said “This part of the adventure is over, but there are more monsters out there”. Going over that thought two more times is clumsy.
There’s not much dialogue and the plot is straightforward. That’s appropriate for a movie called Monster Hunter. The world is full of monsters. Find a way to survive the encounters and get back home! Sure, it means the title is a giant misnomer but should that promised sequel materialize (it’s not going to) it would’ve made sense. I went into Monster Hunter expecting it to be terrible because, despite a few recent outliers, most video game adaptations have been lackluster at best. I was pleasantly surprised. I'd watch another Monster Hunter. I'd even watch this again before any of the Resident Evil films. (August 6, 2023)

Monster Hunter Paul W.S. Anderson Germany/USA/Japan/China/South Africa/Canada, 2020 ★ This is so consistently terrible in practically every aspect.. it's almost admirable.
A movie with this premise shouldn't be this dull, and yet..
But, you know, Paul W. S. Anderson. What else can you get?
The creatures look good, though. And it made me appreciate Neil Marshall's DOOMSDAY a bit more, so there's that.

Sony/Screen Gems/TOHO Monster Hunter 2020 Movie Review Finale Part 4
This Review Ends With Sequel Baiting That Might Never Happen… Yeah. Oh hey! They guy who appeared near the end? Ron Perlman. I do seem to be reviewing quite a bit where he shows up as a character aint I. Guess I should review the two Hellboy movies he’s in sooner or later. Just to carry on my whole looking at stuff with Ron Perlman in it. So I calculated my coming days left in January. And even…

I think it's insanity that a show that aired in 2005 about monsters and hunters, God and Lucifer, devils and angels evolved into a tragic gay love story, ended in 2020, is still trending to this day, will never stop trending, Jensen Ackles truly thinks that he's Dean Winchester irl, throwing birthday parties and all, Misha is being held hostage by CW but is fighting for the angel's gay rights in the trenches, there are tapes worth more than FBI secrets, this gay love story is also involved with American/Russian politics, is doing a better job at informing people than the news, updates not known to the public keep on surfacing to remind the people that Destiel is canon every good old Tuesday. Insanity.

Monster Hunter Pocket Edition 2024: Rathalos
Back in 2020 I made some pixel art for a hypothetical Monster Hunter fighting game that would has been put on the Neo Geo Pocket Colour and I've wanted to do a remake of those pieces for some time now. Starting off, we have the king of the Skies, Rathalos!
Now, I know it's often said in art circles that you shouldn't put down your own work, and I still somewhat happy with the original... but I don't know about you guys, but the new version is such an improvement. And I'm stoked with how it came out. I'll be doing a bit extra with these ones too as each "in game" sprite will be accompanied by a "character select" sprite and 18 x 18 pixel portrait. On top of that, the original 6 monsters will be joined by 4 new ones.
I hope you guys like it and I'll see you next time with the next monster... or something else... not gonna lie, since I have the animation done now I'm not too sure what to do but we'll see!

POKESHIPPING WEEK 2024!
It's that time again, pokeshippers!
Last year, we announced that the format of Pokeshipping Week - one theme per day - was getting retired. We also said that we'd still put on a celebration of some kind going forward. Well, the time is here, and I'm happy to announce that we are planning a pokeshipping zine...next year!
If you'll forgive the bait-and-switch there, we have seriously talked about doing a zine, but time got away from us this summer. So, while we do hope to tackle that undertaking in 2025, for this year, we're planning what you might call an open Pokeshipping Week!
How does it work, you ask? Simple: over the years, you all have submitted a lot of potential themes for Pokeshipping Week. For every seven that got chosen each year, plenty were left behind. Well, now you can fill November 1 to 7 with art, fics, AMVs, GIFs, graphics, etc., all about our favorite Poke-couple, using any seven you'd like from the unused themes list.
Any and all contributions are welcome, and if they're tagged #pokeshipping week 2024, we'll reblog them here and on the main @pokeshipping blog. Besides Tumblr, we’ll keep our eyes out for the tag on Twitter and DeviantART for artwork, for fanfics on FF.Net and AO3, and for AMVs on YouTube (no NSFW, please).
The full list of unused themes (from years 2020 through 2023) is below the "Read More" break. Use, combine, and create as your heart desires, and we'll see you November 1!

Grey Wardens and Ghilan'nain
Welcome to my Ted Talk. I don't tend to make these posts on tumblr but I do overload my friends on discord a lot so I thought I'd give it a whirl here. I'm going to be talking about some spoilers from Tevinter Nights here and the new trailer.
So I was re-reading Tevinter Nights again after we got all these big reveals from the trailers and I got to Horrors of Hormak. It made me do the thinkings.
I wanna touch on this imagery just cause I love it. It looks as if Ghilan'nain's tentacles are choking out a stone griffin. Griffin's being the symbol of the Grey Wardens.
In Horrors of Hormak in Tevinter Nights, we have Grey Wardens who stumble upon what we believe is Ghilan'nain's eldritch horror pits. It shows darkspawn just walking right in and getting mutated. The implication that they're being controlled ala the calling sets up some interesting things for grey warden specifically.
Maybe that's what's going down in Weisshaupt.
Because the Grey Wardens have battled darkspawn forever, they're kinda pros at it. Weisshaupt is supposed to be their fortress, their hub of awesomeness, but something (that we know) is going wrong there. Couldn't just be darkspawn, they know how to handle darkspawn.
Couldn't just be red lyrium darkspawn right? Cause at this point it's been 10 years since the situation at Adamant Fortress. They should be somewhat aware and knowing how to fight that. They had Lord Commander Clarel mucking that up. They likely are super wary of letting that happen again. It is likely that they have done things to keep the Red Lyrium stuff in check, you'd think.
So if it isn't normal darkspawn, and it aint red lyrium tainted darkspawn(i mean it still could be), It really could be what was set up in Tevinter Nights.
Which goes with Davrin being a "monster hunter". It's just perfect.
Davrin who looks like he gets a bit of an upgrade at some point. His armor is pretty gilded out. Interesting imagery like the shoulder looking like a helmet we've seen before. Then we had a few scenes in the trailer that looked like Grey Warden. We had a scene with an impaled Ghilan'nain before Elgar'nan dabs in with them in the background.
I did the zooming and it looks like two griffins. These are Grey Warden attacking Ghilly. Later in the trailer and with Taash, similar geared out soldiers are seen.
Then, of course, you have Solas himself who does not care for the Grey Warden.
He really doesn't care for the Grey Wardens and we always have been squinting our eyes at him with knowing he is one of the Evanuris. Like, why you so mad bro?
In Tevinter Nights we had two reactions to these pit things of horror. We have the recruit who wouldn't have done the joining yet and then we have the wardens who have. When they went in, things didn't go the way they should have. The recruit just went mad but wasn't changed? Still had a bunch of grey brine water inside them, though. Not entirely sure what was happening there. But the warden who was twisted stated things weren't going right with the wardens on their transformation and they had to consume the grey brine, rather than walking into it like the darkspawn. Then they were fighting for control when transformed. So something is wrong with the grey wardens in general straddling the line between the blight and humanity/elfanity/dwarfanity (lol) [Side note, we had this in the behind the scenes video from 2020. This is totally one of her monsters, isn't it?]
I think Solas doesn't like this either. I think he knows what the blight is or where it's from and he sees the grey wardens as abominations or something of the sort. Then you add on the theory of the "old gods" being connected to the evanuris and they're outright killing those pieces of the evanuris with the archdemons. It could also be weakening the jail he put in place when they do this. He is probably unsettled by the whole thing, but he can't really do anything about it considering the whole darkspawn/blight situation in thedas when he does wake up. I'm pretty confident in saying that Ghilan'nain's plot and the grey wardens specifically go hand in hand. It'll be the first half of the game. Thank you for coming to my talk, we will see if i'm right in the end of October haha.

I am writing this as a Tumblr post because I don't want to make a video, as I feel this person is just trying to engagement bait me so he can grow his channel. Looking at his videos, he has seen an increase in views for videos that have been clickbait or trying to "call out" something. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do to grow your channel, but I am not about that.
Iixxion recently made a video and for the third time already, is rambling on about how he has been annoyed that he ran into people that referred to the portable series of MH games as being developed by a different "B team" than the ones that make the non-portable game's "A team". Of course, that notion is incorrect, anyone with a brain knows that both lines of MH games are created by Division 2 in Capcom Osaka and that there is plenty of overlap between titles in terms of staff. He argues that this misconception is the cause of tribalism and animosity in the MH community and is the single most dangerous issue in terms of growing the user base. My perspective is that there is indeed a divide on people who like the portable series and those who don't (which is fine!), and released platforms also contributed to that division, but no one is writing off any mainline game (MH, MHF, MHG, MHF2, MH2, MHFU, MH3, MH3U, MHP3, MH4, MH4U, MHGen, MHGU, World, Iceborne, Rise, Sunbreak) because it was made by some separate unrelated team.
The issue is that he blames me for this apparent misconception and points to my video from 2020 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhpDnFU6lAo) where I cover the rich history of KH games and how each of the games and the portable series' games, have influenced the franchise as a whole and what features each entry introduced. He says that my video is one of the main sources of this division and that it is somehow my vague wording around the different teams on each MH title has caused horrible damage and that I am irresponsible and lazy for this. (BRUH)
Not only was my video just 4 years ago and focused on the development history and features of each title, if there was tribalism between console and portable games, that existed long before 2020. But he uses a Staw Man argument to "call me out" which is to argue against the notion of an A team and B team that are completely separate from each other, which isn't something I ever said in the first place. When i corrected him, he counters with "so you agree with me then" and that is when I realized it would be useless to discuss with him and took a look across his past videos and found a pattern of engagement farming, so I decided to just delete my comments on his videos and walk away from it.
If you want to make an argument against vague wording, it could be him saying the only consistent difference between the members that work on a "console" game versus the "portable series" games is the Director. That OFC is not true.
Some fun data looking at staff rolls.
Very natural overlap in the areas that you'd imagine with game design and programming being the main specialized fields.
Now if you want to argue semantics, then there isn't even a "monster hunter team"--it simply doesn't exist. Only Capcom developers exist and if you had to split them into distinct teams, that is Division 1 and 2.
He would likely say "see, he is supporting my argument, told you!" or "why weren't you this clear in your history video" but that is because he is making a false connection between some crap he read online, and my video and he sees me as the main cause of this "tribalism". A very disappointing conclusion he came to. My video wasn't about team compositions, it was about the franchise title history, and I pulled and used data all from official sources and interviews with the directors themselves.
I guess when you work hard across multiple years to make fun and hopefully informative videos on a franchise, the more you get targeted with bad faith arguments or engagement farming. Doesn't make it less tiring...
Stop worrying about reddit user tribalism over console/portable games, the games do have a different game design philosophy and on different consoles, so some division is to be expected, and we have so much cool news to focus on than to waste time creating drama for clicks. Be better.

Onyx's cringe ass horror recommendations for Halloween: so you like the idea of mascot horror, but most mascot "horror" makes you wanna kill yourself
I personally love the concept of mascot horror, at least in the idea of childish horror, combining childlike and nostalgic things with actual horror, etc. I don't love Garten of BanBan.
So here's some "mascot-esque" horror I think is a good sort of replacement, that utilizes the contrast of cute and childlike vs disturbing without just pretending to as an excuse to open a merch store.
1. Petscop (2017-2019 YouTube series) Basics: A man discovers an old Petscop disc in his mom's house and uploads a series of videos of him playing it to prove to a "friend" that it's real. Not outright scary, but cryptic and eerie. Content warnings: Child abuse and allusions to suicide
2. Shipwrecked 64 (2024 video game) Basics: A cursed "lost N64 game" created by a slighted developer with the intention of exposing the covered-up crimes of the company that commissioned it. One of the most outright scary on the list. Content warnings: Graphic violence, self-hate, self-harm (brought up by ralseibinary because I forgor)
3. Mr. Hopp's Playhouse (2019-2023 video game series) Basics: A girl's dying gift from her grandmother- a creepy toy rabbit named Mr. Hopp- turns out to be housing a demonic entity. Not very scary, but an entertaining game with an interesting story. Content warnings: Emotional abuse against children and implied violence (both in Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 2)
4. The Walten Files (2020-present YouTube series) Basics: A series chronicling the disturbing incidents and supernatural occurences around the now-defunct Bon's Burgers. My personal pick for the scariest on the list. Content warnings: Harm against/death of children, extreme/graphic violence
5. Harmony & Horror (2019-?? YouTube series) Basics: A mad toymaker traps his family inside a series of grotesque living dolls in a search for the perfect toy. A somewhat disturbing and scare-heavy series. Content warnings: Religious/satanic themes, graphic violence, domestic and child abuse
6. The Nursery (2024-present YouTube series) Basics: My own horror series. A girl returns to her hometown years after leaving to investigate the urban legend of "The Thing" and an unidentified Jane Doe. Not so much childlike, at least, not yet, but designed to be Petscop-esque, sort of nostalgic. Content warnings: Implied child abuse and abandonment, graphic violence, harm to and death of small children, religious themes, body dysmorphia
7. Welcome Home (2023 "ARG") Basics: A website detailing the restoration and preservation of the fictitious lost Sesame-Street style show Welcome Home. Not really an ARG. The opposite end of the spectrum from The Nursery, Welcome Home is less horror-based and more rooted in the nostalgic, childish aesthetic. Content warnings: None that I know of
8. Amanda the Adventurer (2023-present video game series) Basics: A Dora-the-Explorer-esque public-access TV series houses at least one demon and the trapped souls of children who have been lured in by the show. Content warnings: Religious/satanic/cult themes, implied harm to/death of small children
9. Choo-Choo Charles (2022 video game) Basics: A giant spider inhabiting a defunct train terrorizes a remote island, and an archivist and monster hunter is tasked with finding the spider's eggs. Different from most mascot horror and basically all horror on this list, but in a way that felt worth honoring with its inclusion. Content warnings: Religious/cult themes, animal death?

Ace Attorney News Roundup
Very behind on several of these, but news doesn't always cross over from twitter to tumblr, so I thought I'd recap some things here:
AAI 15th Anniversary
First: today marks the 15th anniversary of Ace Attorney Investigations! Tatsuro Iwamoto, the art director for AAI, made a celebratory sketch of Kay to commemorate the occasion (link to tweet):
Iwamoto has also been drawing fanart of minor characters throughout the ace attorney trilogy on his twitter page. These include: April May, Dee Vasquez, Yanni Yogi (and Polly), Richard Wellington, Turner Grey, Moe the Clown, Max Galactica, Oldbag (alien mode), Matt Engarde, Doug Swallow, Luke Atmey (and Mask☆DeMasque), Viola Cadaverini, Valerie Hawthorne, Lisa Basil, and Glen Elg. Technically these aren't official art, but it's always good to have more art of obscurer characters!
The Great Ace Attorney Hit A Million Copies
Some big news: The Great Ace Attorney's 2021 port hit a million copies sold, making it the second ace attorney game to hit Capcom's platinum titles list, the first being the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy from 2019! This comes just under 3 years since the release of the duology in July 2021. In comparison, the original AA trilogy hit a million copies in December 2020, shortly under two years since the release of the game in February 2019.
The update to the platinum titles sales shows that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy has reached 3.3 million copies sold, which means that it has sold over a million copies in less than a year! (My last post that had information on sales, where I said the trilogy had sold 2.3 million, was in September 2023.) It also makes it the 30th highest selling title for Capcom, which I think is pretty impressive considering giants like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter are making up the majority of the top 30.
So, the AA trilogy made its first million in approximately 22 months, but now it has sold a million over the last 8 months. I don't know anything about game sales and so this next part is just speculation, but I wouldn't expect it to be very common for games to sell more years out from their release compared to at release? I think that's really saying something about the long-term staying power of this series, and its increasing popularity over the last few years despite not having any new releases (aside from ports - and porting the series to all platforms probably has something to do with the popularity.)
The AA Twitter Is Very Active Right Now
Here are a couple of bullet points with no relation to each other:
-The official ace attorney twitter has been VERY active, particularly the last week. They've been doing the same "weekly book club" for each case that they did for the Great Ace Attorney duology, but that wrapped up last week and now it's just been memes, at least one a day. In most of my time following this account over the last uhh six years, they mostly ramp up marketing around new releases but are kinda silent the rest of the time, with the occasional meme, but definitely not at this frequency.
-Summer Game Fest is next week.
That probably means nothing, as it has every other time I thought we might get some big ace attorney news, but I think it's worth noting.
So, lots of stuff happened this week! Thanks for reading.
