Specific to the 2017 Death note movie. If you don't know this version, you can vote "I don't know the characters".

Will say while Netflix's Death Note sucked ass Willem Dafoe is like the perfect casting choice for Ryuk

After binging the entirety of death note watched the netflix movie. It's an odd one for sure, with many, many *choices* What confuses me the most is the final song that leads into the credits. The power of Love by Air supply. For some reason, this is the thing which has stumped me. Not the terrible teen romance, not their interpretations of characters, not the slightly off kilter chase scene, but this dang ending song.
It just wraps this entire baffling movie in an odd bow, doubly so with the slightly open ending.

This is how I felt when I first saw Netflix Death Note… like… I know it’s not technically supposed to be a one-for-one of the manga or anime story, but did they really have to Americanise the cast like that? I like my Japanese stuff to be Japanese, thank you.

What I don't get is why news outlets and Netflix are trying to convince us that arcane was expensive to make. 250 million usd for both seasons they said, and obviously that's a lot of money, but they make the mistake of comparing it to big budget movies like Tangled. So you're telling me that I got an animated masterpiece that combines multiple different art styles fantastic voice acting and creative and passionate writing, that's 6-7 hours LONGER than major animated movies, and its the same fucking price?? And you're expecting me to agree with the corporations outlook, that it's too expensive? Yes, tangled is considered one of the most expensive animated movies, but arcane is like FOUR Tangleds. Many other 3D animated movies fall within the 160 million mark, but again, they're hours shorter than arcane was. I think the prices are comparable. I believe in saw someone (on reddit maybe?) divide the cost down to minutes of screen time for each show or movie and it becomes really obvious. I'm also pretty sure that many of these movie budgets do not include marketing in their overall expenses; arcane does.
This isnt even bringing live action tv shows into the equation; i dont think arcane even touches like the top thirty of those. And yet it's framed as such an expense!! Bitch its an incredibly successful tv show!! Ik Netflix is cheap as shit and has its own reputation to grapple with, but is the disdain for animation so much? Is it disdain for female lead action, for poc representation, for LGBT rep on screen? For the animation medium as a whole? I know the answer of course. But it's still very upsetting to acknowledge and think about.
Separately, arcane is absolutely crushing it. Ik act three is going to knock it out of the ballpark. Keep crushing corporate execs expectations please.

7 Ways to Introduce the Villain.
Tumblr media
1. The Shadow
A lot of series go with the classic 'ominous shadowy figure in the background.' Here's Silco in Arcane. Sinister voice, sinister dude, sinister intent. Boom, you have your villain.
Tumblr media
2. The Slow Reveal
Other variations of the 'shadowy figure' in which the series draws out the reveal of the villain. Avatar: The Last Airbender doesn't reveal the Firelord until the final season, but his presence is felt throughout the series. He's always this looming threat whose will is carried out by his underlings. (General Zhao, Azula, etc.)
Tumblr media
3. The Fabulous Entrance!
Okay, so we do hear Ragyo on the phone a couple times before they actually show her face, but goddamn, this entrance. It is impressive and terrifying and, it perfectly suits the utter psycho that she is.
There is no normal expression this woman makes when she's 'happy.' She's always smug or angry or annoyed, but this face with her staring, manic eyes and smile still haunts me. Send help.
Tumblr media
4. The Sudden Entrance
Shigaraki kinda comes out of nowhere in My Hero Academia. For the first few episodes, its all lighthearted and fun and dealing with Bakugo's BS and then the class heads off on a field trip and suddenly,
"Oh, shit! Plot is happening!"
This series started off with kids learning to be heroes, and now its tragedy and social upheaval and people's lives are in danger.
Tumblr media
5. The Incognito Entrance
This is when some random nonthreatening dude/lady just kinda sidles into the plot the be the butt of a joke and later turns out to have been one of the villains.
This scene was so weird. Tyki is just minding his own business, scamming people at cards. Then Allen and Lavi show up looking for their friend (the guy currently being scammed), and even though he recognizes them as exorcists and his enemies, Tyki has to sit there and play it off like he doesn't know jack cause if he does anything, he's gonna blow his cover in front of his human buddies. And then he suffers the indignation of being stripped in a poker game in broad daylight because the main protagonist is absolutely evil with a card deck. And then he just walks away from this like it's a totally normal thing, not even really taking vengeance for it. (He went after Allen, sure, but that was more of a job than any personal vendetta.) He's not the main villain, but I couldn't resist pointing out how bizarre this is.
For those who haven't seen D. Gray Man, the guy in the center is one of the main antagonists, and though this is technically the second time you see him, the first encounter was so short it was practically a cameo and he was a Victorian-era, Dorian Gray dandy gentleman, not this hobo riding a train.
Tumblr media
6. The Traitor
Since the Undertaker was more of a neutral party in Black Butler, I don't think he really counts as a traitor. Still, I don't think too many of us were suspecting the morbid jokester Grim Reaper was going to turn out to be a major antagonist later on.
Tumblr media
7. The Protagonist
And sometimes the protagonist is the villain!

Wednesday: I need to borrow your death note.
Y/N: why?
Wednesday: that new werewolf student insulted Enid and used a derogatory term against her.
Y/N: no I cannot let you borrow the Death Note.
Wednesday: why?
Y/N: because I already wrote that new guy’s name in it. (Winks)
Wednesday just smiles…
The last horrific scream of that student rings out from down the hall…
Ryuk: (laughs) I like these two (laughs)

It bears repeating that the few negative reviews include several outlets like Polygon who are mad the show is too faithful to the manga.
Once the strike is resolved with a fair deal for the writers and actors, we are going to see a lot of optioned anime IP’s fast tracked for film and television shows.

i didn’t watch it yet, but from what i’ve seen (summaries, reviews and clips), i figured it would be enjoyable in the ‘unintentional comedy’/‘so bad it’s good’ way. i laughed my ass off watching the ferris wheel scene.
can i be so real i kind of liked the netflix adaptation even though it is pretty inarguably the worst dn adaptation available
