Beast and Dark Beast
The thing that gets me about the 'Dark Beast is just who Hank is given time' thing I see thrown around every now and then is that it fundamentally misunderstands literal decades age characterisation and the entire narrative point of the evil doppelgänger.
Like, I genuinely think that anyone who writes these characters almost has to be sat down and made to read X-Men Unlimited vol. 1 #10, and that's not an exaggeration, because Dark Beast is NOT Hank if he was evil. What he is, is something more subtle and interesting than that. He is Hank if his socialisation was completely different, and that's a fundamentally different thing.
He grew up in an aggressively social Darwinist society that was obsessed with genetic purity, the superiority of mutantkind, the codification of the idea that some people are just better because of their genes. Literally everyone in that world is different, because how in god's name would they stay the same?
Tumblr media
On some level, Dark Beast is aware that his world is fundamentally cruel and without faith and optimism and belief and love. It's a fucking hellpit. It's the worst possible world. And he knows that. He knows, on some level, that there was a time where he wasn't like how he was, that there was a time where he did have faith. He is, on some level, aware that this is not all he could be.
But he also believes that this is all he can be, because to be anything else is to be weak, and thus you get your teeth kicked in and you get your lunch money taken away and you get shanked in the head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, this sequence is so fascinating because this murder is meaningless except as performance - and performance for a world that Dark Beast isn't even in anymore! It's empty.
Someone has to die - why? Because that's just the way the world is. Because if someone doesn't have to die, then my entire worldview is meaningless, I could have made different choices, swam upstream, maybe died as a result, but at least I wouldn't have done all that. Because if someone doesn't have to die, then everything I did was actually just straight up evil and I have to start worrying about morality, and that feels bad. That makes me feel weak and unhappy and angry and ashamed and I don't like that.
If someone doesn't have to die, then I could have made different choices. And I don't like the idea that I made the wrong ones.
Tumblr media
Morality is subjective. Science is absolute. I don't have to think about it. Like, Dark Beast criticises Hank for this, but it gets at why Dark Beast has never been half the scientist Hank is, never will be half the scientist Hank is.
Because he is fundamentally incurious. He's asking questions, but they're not the right questions if you ever want to get an answer that fucking means anything.
Tumblr media
He'll never be the scientist you are, huh?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Go ahead, loser. Fucking solve it. Best guess.
Oh, you don't have a fucking clue? I'm shocked.
Tumblr media
There's a reason that Isaac Newton said that, "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." Collaboration, peer review, question, counter-question, interrogation, inquiry, the simple act of asking, hey, what if all of this is completely wrong and we're looking in the wrong place? All of this is what science actually is.
It is not the act of pinioning flesh open and poking at what falls out. That's butchery, and it's hackery. There's a reason that pretty much all of the medical research conducted by the Nazis has been discredited, because it's bad science on top of being completely morally abhorrent! You don't learn anything through brutality! You only reinforce your own brutality! You go looking for answers, and you find them, because anything that disagrees with your preconceived notions, you ignore!
And Hank is not like that. It's no coincidence that the exact same issue that dives into Dark Beast's psychology has this scene in it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it's just. This is not an aberration in Hank's writing. This is how he's hard coded. This is who he is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Choice.
Tumblr media
Hank was given a choice. Dark Beast wasn't. And the difference between them is that, when given further choices, Hank continued to recognise that he had choices, while Dark Beast refused to admit that he had ever had a choice.
The point. Of the evil twin. Of the doppelganger. Of the shadow. Is to examine what changes, and what doesn't. There is a reason that Dark Beast was chosen to survive the Age of Apocalypse, and persist 30 years past the point where his timeline was truly relevant. There is a reason that he was chosen over AoA Cyclops, or AoA Wolverine, or AoA Jean Grey, or any of them, to come over, and persist, and survive. There is a reason he keeps coming back to life. He has died twice, and come back, for a reason.
Because he is interesting. Because he's fun. Because he's everything that Hank is, twisted one hundred and eighty degrees and made frightening. Because he is such a contrast to Hank. And it's just. It's such a betrayal of long form storytelling and narrative techniques to take one look at the good twin, and go, what if they were secretly always evil, actually? What if the evil twin was actually just foreshadowing?
It's fucking boring.
Evil Hank is 'we have Dark Beast at home.' Evil Hank is dull, and boring, and an edgelord's idea of a mad scientist. He is not curious, he is not funny, he is not interesting. His entire ethos can be summed up in one sentence, the ends justify the means, and that's it. There's nothing more to him. He's a joke of a character. Can you write anything substantive about that version of character that isn't just a summary of his bad choices? No, you can't, because he's a collection of shitty tropes and badly researched continuity pulls. There's no point talking about him.
What happens if you put evil Hank in this situation?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, legitimately. If you put X-Force Beast in this situation, is there any real question as to what he'll do? No. And that is boring. It is, quite literally, actually, factually, in the most basic definition of the word, predictable.
Tumblr media
This is the single most intriguing panel that Dark Beast has ever been in, because I genuinely don't know what he's thinking. I don't know what he's going to do. Because I don't think he knows what he's thinking, or what he's going to do. He's overwhelmed. He's emotional. He's possessed by something, but he doesn't have words for it. It's not absolute, it's subjective. It doesn't make sense. It's illogical. Irrational. It infuriates him. It fascinates me.
That, is the narrative point of the evil doppelganger. To put a version of a character you know in a situation where you know what the good version would do, and see what they would do. To see what changes, and what doesn't. So that you can be surprised at what is the same and what is different.
Saying, well, actually, they've always been exactly the same person, is fucking stupid. It betrays a belief in, fuckin', in fuckin' genetic essentialism! That all we ever are is a product of our genes and that we're never destined to be anything than what a string in our genes says we are. And it completely misunderstands why Dark Beast is the way that he is!
Tumblr media
Dark Beast did not come into the world a monster. The world he lived in made him a monster. If you want to say that Hank is Dark Beast, just given time, then what the fuck are you saying about the world that mutants live in? That the X-Men have created? About Earth-616?
Do you really want to imply that the Marvel Universe is such a fucking hellscape for mutants that it literally has the exact same effect on Hank McCoy as the Age of fucking Apocalypse? Because why in the fuck should I even read about the X-Men, if that's what they've managed to accomplish in their 60 years of publication? What great fuckin' heroes.
Like, just. What actually happens to Hank, given time? What's more common for him to experience? Across the multiverse?
Mutation.
Tumblr media
Misery.
Tumblr media
Betrayal.
Tumblr media
Death.
Tumblr media
Seriously, go back and read old What If comics, and you'll notice that almost any time that things go bad for the X-Men, Beast dies, almost immediately, because it's an immediate sign that things have gone wrong. It is way more common for Hank to be the one who suffers rather than inflicting suffering, canonically. Just because Dark Beast is the only one people know about doesn't mean that he's the only one who exists.
Dark Beast is not an inevitability. He's an eventuality. He's a case study in nature vs. nurture. He's the worst case scenario. He's the shadow cast by Hank's light. There's a reason Hank persists, even damaged by bad writing as he is - because he's worth reading about.
Because he's interesting. Because, despite being 61 years old, there are still stories worth telling about him.
Because fundamentally, funny blue man who looks like a monster but is actually a good guy, is a better concept than, blue monster man that is evil and only evil. And the fact that people don't seem to grasp that idea in 2024 is. Baffling, to me. The fact that people would rather the boring answer, because it appeals to the edgelord in them, just makes me want to roll my goddamn eyes.
Bleh. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. Ask for better, more complex stories, please.

The X-Files, 6:3: Triangle
Tumblr media
What is the plot? What kind of triangle is it? A love triangle? Not really. It's the Bermuda Triangle! But is the time warp real, or in Mulder's dreams? Also, why does Mulder keep going looking for lost ships? He always ends up in the hospital, and after close calls! This time, he goes looking for the Queen Anne, a British ship that disappeared in 1939, possibly due to being torpedoed by a Nazi submarine. (Or, the writers went looking for a way for a character born in 1961 to have a heroic role in a World War II story!) Anyway, Mulder has left DC, where there is "just a little trouble at [the] White House" which will "blow over soon, so to speak" (late 1998 time stamp) and finds himself in the Sargasso Sea in the early days of World War II. And there are all these people who look familiar on the ship - someone who looks like the CSM is a Nazi officer, and someone who looks like Scully is an OSS agent traveling undercover with a scientist who could make a bomb. Meanwhile, Scully and the Lone Gunman go looking for Mulder, and while they do see the Queen Anne ("I can't believe my eyes" "Seeing is believing"!), and board it, it's a ghost ship, no time warp. Fortunately, they find Mulder in the water and succeed in their mission to rescue him (from the physical consequences of his imagination).
What does this episode suggest about Mulder and Scully’s relationship with each other? This episode probably had a really misleading promo that showed an usually large amount of kissing for this show, didn't it?? Scully (a person who is good at Action) has never gone into action faster and harder than she does to track down and help Mulder. She's so amped that, when Skinner helps her, she grabs him by both shoulders and kisses him on the mouth. Skinner seems fine with this and even manages to mostly ignore that that just happened and play the part of being mad at Scully when they got off the elevator. Mulder is feeling very end-of-the-world and dramatically kisses Scully's 1939 doppelgänger before saying goodbye to her (jumping back into the Sargasso Sea). Because she is not in fact Dana Scully who has known him for 6 years and almost mutually kissed him a few months ago, she very reasonably punches him. Back in 1998, actual Scully is very relieved that he's ok, but cannot take him seriously when he very genuinely tells her he loves her. (I mean, I can imagine she takes it seriously in a way, but she's under the impression that he's delirious!)
Where are the aliens? just like I don't believe, after all of this time, that extraterrestrial life is actually the little gray men (it could be the black oil), I don't actually believe the things in 1939 literally happened, though Mulder really did have a bruise from being punched in the eye; a dream sequence also explains away the historical inaccuracies, or the fact that the CSM really has an American accent when he speaks German

The Plight of the Political Satirist
How Ruben Bolling, of “Tom the Dancing Bug,” Finds the Humor in a Volatile News Cycle.
— By Sarah Larson | August 29, 2024
Tumblr media
Art Works Courtesy Ruben Bolling
Ruben Bolling, who has drawn and written his intricate, incisive, shape-shifting weekly cartoon “Tom the Dancing Bug” for more than three decades, works best under the pressure of a deadline. “Years ago, I decided to lean into it,” he told me recently. Monday is deadline day. On the Saturday just before the R.N.C., where Donald Trump accepted the Republican Party’s nomination for President, Bolling was working on that week’s cartoon: a riff on the Busytown illustrations by the great children’s-book author Richard Scarry, titled “A Busy, Busy Day at the Republican National Convention.” There, instead of townsfolk like Huckle Cat and the gang doing jobs labelled “carpenter,” “street cleaner,” and such, their doppelgängers were in a convention space doing other kinds of work: a fox pushing a wheelbarrow full of cash (“Supreme Court Justice briber”); a reporter (“normalizing media member”) interviewing a cat in a polo shirt and red hat (“actual Nazi”). Later that day, Bolling learned that Trump had been shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania. He took stock of the national mood for a few hours, then revised, adding an N.R.A. booth (“ask me how to get guns”), staffed by a smartly dressed pig with a friendly smile. He’s labelled “political violence preventer.”
Bolling, who has been a Pulitzer Prize finalist twice in the past five years, makes these characters “as cute as possible while they’re doing horrible things,” he said. He’s parodied Scarry before, and the results are reliably sweet and chilling—even as we catalogue the horrors of our times, via cartoon pig and rhino and cat, it’s hard not to feel buoyed by the pleasures of Scarry’s gentle world view. “It’s very typical of a lot of what I do, which is taking older, nostalgic, innocent pieces of art and defiling them by bringing them into the darkest parts of our world,” Bolling said. “I find it’s very effective. And it can be very upsetting to me.”
“Tom the Dancing Bug,” which Bolling began publishing widely in 1990, has always been free-form and vaudevillian from week to week—original characters, recurring parodies and satires, one-offs, a terrific long-running meta-funny-pages gag. His illustration style tends toward a tidy clean-line aesthetic, à la “Tintin,” but it morphs to suit whatever he’s up to: hatched and shaded portrait-style depictions of celebrities and politicians; imitations of other artists; fake ads, posters, and informational broadsides. Early on, Bolling had “Saturday Night Live,” Mad magazine, and “Mr. Show” in mind as inspirations. The strip has become more political over time, especially in recent years, though the past few weeks of U.S. election news—an assassination attempt in one party, the passing of the candidacy torch in the other—has been atypical in its intensity. Like all satirists of our era, Bolling has learned to adapt.
Tumblr media
For a long time, he did “the old satirist’s trick of exaggerating what happens and what politicians say and what their policies are,” Bolling told me. “But that didn’t work with Trump, because he was better at it than I was. I couldn’t compete with him in creating his own satire.” Instead, Bolling tends to recontextualize Trump, putting his language into the mouths of comic-strip characters, on propaganda posters, and so on, providing the reader with a fresh jolt of amusement and alarm. In strips from 2020, Bolling, via black-and-white newsreel-style images, juxtaposes the Trumpian response to the pandemic with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, in 1941. “Why should I join up just because a few thousand Americans died in Hawaii?” a potential G.I. asks. “How many Americans die every day in ironing board accidents?” F.D.R., downplaying the crisis, responds to enemy invasions of New York and California with “This is only in two states! I like those numbers! In a couple of days it will be zero!”
Bolling has published several collections of his work; his latest, “ ‘It’s the Great Storm, Tom the Dancing Bug!,’ ” which includes strips published from 2020 to 2023, came out this month. The cover—the U.S. Capitol, a pumpkin patch, silhouettes of rioters under a night sky—references his series “Q-Nuts,” which plays on “Peanuts” and “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” Bolling tries to resist being cruel to beloved childhood characters, “but my favorite, Linus, I turned into a QAnon nut,” he said. “And that hurt.” In “Peanuts,” Linus faithfully waits each Halloween for the Great Pumpkin, a mythical, unseen figure who delivers candy to believers. “It never happens,” Bolling said. “And he always makes excuses. I realized that’s QAnon.” It was one of his most popular cartoons ever. So was the series “Donald and John: A Boy President and His Imaginary Publicist,” with boy Trump as Calvin and John Barron, the imaginary publicist, as Hobbes. Bill Watterson’s original characters—Calvin, enthusiastic young fantasist and joyful megalomaniac, and Hobbes, slightly more reasonable sidekick—fit beautifully into Bolling’s satirical framework. (In a recent entry, a giant Calvin, outfitted with toy crown, stomps around a ravaged D.C., exclaiming, “It’s good to have immunity!”) Coming up with ideas can be gruelling work, Bolling said, but when he did a daily “Donald and John” online, in 2016, it “was like walking down the path picking blueberries. Every day I was, like, ‘Oh, that’s like when he pretends he’s a dinosaur.’ Everything fell into place.”
Bolling’s Strip Began Publishing in newspapers in the nineties, growing in syndication during the heyday of alt-weekly comics, alongside strips by artists such as Matt Groening, Lynda Barry, Alison Bechdel, and Tony Millionaire. He still publishes in print, though his main readership is now online, and he maintains a robust Patreon community called the Inner Hive.
“Tom the Dancing Bug” originated, somewhat startlingly, in 1986, at Harvard Law School. Bolling had grown up in Short Hills, New Jersey, with his two brothers and his parents. “There was a lot of competing for attention,” he said. He was a stutterer, and wasn’t comfortable telling jokes, but he started drawing comics, filling spiral notebooks with them. He didn’t publish any until after college, when he was attending Harvard Law, and he saw a “cartoonist wanted” ad for the law-school paper. Without that, he said, “I don’t know if I’d be a cartoonist today. The first comic I did was basically exactly what I do now. It was ‘Tom the Dancing Bug.’ I somehow cracked the code immediately.” He collected the strips in a booklet, which he photocopied, stapled, and sold at the Harvard Coop. “They would sell out,” he said. “I kept on going to the copy store and making more. That was gratifying.” He sold his first comic to National Lampoon, whose cartoon editor was Sam Gross, the late and beloved longtime New Yorker cartoonist. (“Sam called me into his office, and he starts yelling at me: ‘What are you doing? There’s three ideas in this comic. Go home, make it three different comics, and I’ll buy all three.’ ”) While working as an attorney, Bolling began self-syndicating the comic, and a few years later, by then working in financial services, he signed a deal with Andrews McMeel, which has syndicated the strip ever since. For many years, he had a double life as a white-collar professional and a cartoonist. (He also has two names: his cartooning pen name and his real name, Ken Fisher.) He lives in Manhattan with his wife, they have three grown children, and, these days, he is just a cartoonist.
In the nineties, “Tom the Dancing Bug” felt like a quietly thrilling revelation, beloved by many but never a household name. Bolling seemed to tease all of pop culture, much of human nature, and comics history at once, always with sensitivity and an eye for the subtly absurd. (See Shluff, the giant, fuzzy alien who visits Earth to nap.) Alongside recurring characters like God-Man, the Superhero with Omnipotent Powers, and Louis Maltby, boy introvert, there was “The Adventures of Sam Roland, the Detective Who Dies,” in which our trenchcoated private eye would get an exciting assignment, like “The Case of the Fuchsia Parrot,” run into trouble, such as a scheming butler (“In one minute, water will come flowing into this chamber, drowning you like a rat!”), try to make a heroic escape (“If I can just loosen these ropes!”), fail, and die. (“Another case left unsolved by Sam Roland, the Detective Who Dies!”) The endlessly brilliant and enjoyable “Super Fun-Pak Comix,” then and now, parodies specific genres (“Marital Mirth,” “Beltway Banalities”), genre conventions (“Too Many Panels Comics”), and whatever else Bolling feels like laughing about (“Tom Cruise & Xenu,” “Percival Dunwoody, Idiot Time Traveler from 1909”).
Tumblr media
Bolling says that 9/11 was a turning point for the strip. “It was almost, like, ‘Can anything ever be funny ever again? Is this real?’ ” He landed on the idea of a “Super Fun-Pak Comix” in which each punch line, no matter the jokey setup, was “Terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center, killing thousands.” “I was crying when I was drawing it,” Bolling said. In the long march of grim news that followed, Bolling’s work continued to reflect political reality, and found humor and pathos everywhere. Nate the Neoconservative came along, as did Lucky Ducky, “the Poor Little Duck Who’s Rich in Luck,” who enrages his wealthy nemesis by being poor and getting all the breaks, and Chagrin Falls, where life is getting a little worse each day for the average American. Bolling’s Scarry cartoons, though, in their perfect blend of innocence, humor, and pain—see “Richard Scarry’s Busy, Busy 21st Century Classroom”—may hit the hardest. “I still get very affected by this,” Bolling said. “My job is to appear cavalier and above it, but when I’m writing and I’m drawing, I’m definitely not. It’s very difficult.”
I asked Bolling why the comic is called “Tom the Dancing Bug.” One day in class at law school, he said, “my friend had gotten a bug on his pen, and he was swivelling the pen. The bug was moving its legs to stay on top, back and forth. And I said, ‘That’s Tom the Dancing Bug.’ ” That night, he submitted his first strip to the paper. A purist, he didn’t want it to have a title—it would be wholly different each week—but the paper insisted. “So I thought of the stupidest name I could think of, and I named it ‘Tom the Dancing Bug,’ in retaliation,” he said. “But I remember riding my bike home afterward thinking, I actually like that.”
“This is horrible, but I feel like we’re all kind of Tom the Dancing Bug, trying to stay on the pen when some unseen force is trying to shake us off,” I said.
“An existentialist way of looking at it,” he said. “I didn’t think that deeply.” He’d seen himself as the bug: “trying my hardest and sweating, dancing for your amusement.” ♦

There’s no explanations in Excalibur #10 how Meggan manages to regain control over her powers enough to pose as her Nazi doppelgänger, despite previously mimicking whoever came close. Idk maybe the psychic blast from Rachel finally snapped her back to normal, or maybe the Nazis’ psyches were just so abhorrent and different from her own that she could easily separate their desires from hers. Or maybe Meggan’s problems were always psychosomatic and being in a dangerous situation gave her the focus she needed to control them again.

Cinema’s Doppelgängers is a counterfactual history of the cinema – or, perhaps, a work of speculative fiction in the guise of a scholarly history of film and movie guide. That is, it’s a history of the movies written from an alternative unfolding of historical time – a world in which neither the Bolsheviks nor the Nazis came to power, and thus a world in which Sergei Eisenstein never made movies and German filmmakers like Fritz Lang never fled to Hollywood, a world in which the talkies were invented in 1936 rather than 1927, in which the French New Wave critics didn’t become filmmakers, and in which Hitchcock never came to Hollywood. The book attempts, on the one hand, to explore and expand upon the intrinsically creative nature of all historical writing; like all works of fiction, its ultimate goal is to be a work of art in and of itself. But it also aims, on the other hand, to be a legitimate examination of the relationship between the economic and political organization of nations and film industries and the resulting aesthetics of film and thus of the dominant ideas and values of film scholarship and criticism.

George R.R. Martin warns that there is a GRRM imposter on Bluesky.
He advised readers of this at Not a Blog.
BLUESKY…Tiz NOT I
I have heard that I’m now apparently on the social network BlueSky, but alas that’s not me. So if you  followed me there I’m sorry to say it’s an imposter.  BUT I will likely be starting up an account there soon, so keep an eye out Here on my BLOG or Facebook social page and I’ll let everyone know when I make the switch and what my handle is going to be. Thanks to all my friends who made me aware of my Bluesky doppelgänger!
George is joining the exodus away from Elon Musk's Nazi-infested Twitter/X. But so far he hasn't started an account at Bluesky.
If you are on Bluesky and you follow somebody claiming to be GRRM, block and report that account.
GRRM is not the world's biggest social media enthusiast. He was late in getting involved at Twitter in pre-Musk times. But he has had a perfunctory presence there.
If you are still on Twitter/X then you need to bite the bullet and leave. It is now essentially a propaganda platform for Elon Musk which he uses to bolster Donald Trump and to spread egregious bullshit. It's never going back to the good old days of the pre-Musk era. Increasingly, people still active on Twitter/X will be associated with the cesspool of racism, misogyny, homophobia, and conspiracy theories which overflow there.

There are a bunch of still-living Holocaust survivors like Stephen Kapos and Marione Ingram marching and speaking out for Palestine now.
Hajo Meyer survived Auschwitz and regularly compared Zionists to Nazis.
Marek Edelman was a leader of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, and in his later years he wrote an open letter to the Palestinian resistance, urging them to never give up and that he saw his own struggle for liberation mirrored in theirs.
Hedy Epstein was a survivor who was viciously smeared for her support of Palestinian human rights. In fact, all these ACTUAL HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS were attacked by members of the zionist establishment, including Elie Wiesel.
Some antizionist Jewish authors have written truly excellent books about how the Holocaust directly fed into zionism and the colonization of Palestine. Of course there’s Ilan Pappe and Noam Chomsky’s “On Palestine” that examines how Nazism and the Holocaust fed directly into the colonization of Palestine.
Naomi Klein’s stellar “Doppelgänger” devotes its last quarter to the “mirroring” between Nazis and Zionists. She dives into how the Nazis defined themselves against who they thought Jews were, exactly how white supremacist colonialists have always positioned themselves as the opposite of the people they seek to dehumanize and oppress, and how Israel has mimicked this so thoroughly - down to taking on the iconography of Nazism. She also discusses how the Jewish Labor Bund and leftist Jewish leaders, most of whom were antizionist and diasporist, were almost all killed by the Nazis.
I especially identified with Klein’s being disheartened by realization that, while some Jews like her took the phrase “Never Again” to mean that we who’ve been through such extreme horrors and survived have an obligation to use our trauma and loss to spare others the same fate, others took “Never Again” to mean for Jews only - “Never Again because now we have Israel.” I guess I’m fortunate that despite the zionist bullshit I was taught, the Holocaust is precisely why I have been involved in antizionist activism since 2013 or so. You can’t see or learn about Palestine without seeing the clearest of parallels.
The thing that's never made sense to me is the "Holocaust inversion" talking point and the idea that we are "moralizing" the Holocaust as something you're supposed to learn from which like aside from the fact that israel's entire pr is that it needs to exist because of the Holocaust, I really don't understand how feeling empathy based on past experiences is like... a moralizing action?
Even those who don't feel empathy, they still like... have the universal idea that you shouldn't do bad things onto other people. When you consider that yeah, when you live in the world, you experience terrible things and you relate those terrible things to other terrible things happening in the world. That's just what everyone does. Whenever I hear things happening to indigenous Turtle Islanders I always relate it back to Palestine. When I hear about violence happening to Black people, I think "Ah it must be terrifying" and I think back to my own family members and friends who were killed by Israel. When i think of antiBlackness in arab spaces, i relate it back to the occupation and compare myself to the occupation on whether or not im inflicting the same pain i and my family endure onto others. It's just how you experience the world. No one is asking you to "learn" from the Holocaust, people are just asking you to apply empathy.
A universal example is that you don't really understand the grief of losing a loved one until you yourself lose a loved one. And when you encounter a person who lost a loved one as well, you relate to them in a unique way that you wouldn't have without having that experience of grief before. It's not a moralizing experience, it's just... an experience. An awful one but you don't *learn* anything from it.
So it always confounds me that there's such vehement pushback against the idea that what Palestinians are going through is similar to the Holocaust because it's not like we're making light of the Holocaust? It's that we are asking you, a zionist (in this case one who is Jewish specifically), to acknowledge that there are similarities between the way Palestinians are treated and the ways Jews, Roma, and multiple other people were treated during the Holocaust. It's that we're relegated to second class status, we are considered lesser, we are confined to ghettos, we have our livelihoods stolen from us, we have weapons tested on us, we're survielled like we are dangerous monsters and we experience systematic segregation. And now we are experiencing mass slaughter campaigns within our concentration camps. But what's the issue? Are you offended that Palestinians can even remotely understand the terrible violence that Jews experienced in the Holocaust? Or are you denying that Palestinians are experiencing those things??
People always bring up like "Oh you don't understand what exactly happened during the Holocaust, you're just using it as a stand in for "a very bad thing"" and that's like... never made sense either because what does that mean? I'm not... using the Holocaust out of nowhere, I'm using it because Israel tells US, PALESTINIANS, that we need to be kicked out and raped and tortured *because* of the Holocaust. When us, Palestinians, ask you to feel empathy for us based on what you experienced during the Holocaust, we aren't just pulling it out of thin air, we are using a zionist talking point and pointing out the flaws. "Does experiencing a Holocaust allow you to conduct massacres and unbelievable violence onto other people?" and "Why are we paying for the terrible crimes of Europeans? Why is this our fault that we must suffer for it, as you, a zionist, insist we must?"
It's just so confusing how people would take offense at feeling empathy for Palestinians. We aren't denying the awful, awful genocide of the Holocaust, nor are we "making light of it..." but if you believe that comparing what Palestinians go through is making light of the Holocaust, then you must think that what we are going through is not bad at all.

(JTA) — When Stars of David began appearing on Jewish homes and institutions in Paris’ 10th arrondissement late last month, as well as on a Jewish woman’s home in Berlin, many were quick to bring up comparisons to the Nazi era.
But French authorities pointed to a surprising culprit: Russia.
According to French authorities, the pictures of the Stars of David first began to spread via a Russian-run news site called Recent Reliable News (RRN) before being found by others online. Shortly after the incident went viral, VIGINUM, France’s intelligence unit devoted to tracking foreign digital interference, recorded more than 1,000 bots making over 2,500 posts related to the incident on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter.
RRN, seemingly a news aggregator, was revealed in June to be part of a network of web domains used by Russian hackers for a disinformation operation targeted at Western Europe known as “Doppelganger.” RRN and sites like it were used to mimic major news outlets and even government sites, sharing information with a clearly pro-Russia slant.
“VIGINUM has a high degree of confidence that these bots are affiliated to the RRN network, given that one of their main activities consists in redirecting people to RRN websites,” France’s foreign ministry said in a press release earlier this month. “France strongly condemns the involvement of the Russian network Recent Reliable News (RRN/Doppelgänger) in the artificial spreading and initial distribution on social media of photos of graffiti representing Stars of David in the 10th arrondissement of Paris.”
As antisemitism has spiked in Europe in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war, multiple investigations have pointed to Russian involvement in stoking an already tense situation. While motives remain unclear, experts have noted that fomenting already brewing divisions and chaos in the West has been a tradition of Russia’s security services since the Cold War.
French investigators noted that their probe is ongoing, and they still have yet to confirm if the vandalism was the work of Russian state-backed actors. But they revealed that two suspects arrested in connection with the graffiti were Moldovan nationals who allegedly painted the stars on the orders of an unknown individual whom they communicated with by phone in Russian. (While Moldova’s national language is Romanian, like many other former Soviet republics, Russian has remained a first language for many of its citizens.)
As more details about the vandalism emerged, more questions were raised. For one, not all of the stars were sprayed on Jewish buildings. Second, the style of the stars — from an elegant stencil, in a deep blue color reminiscent of the Israeli flag — seemed out of place for an antisemitic incident.
While the details remain murky, Nina Jankowicz, the U.S vice president of the Centre for Information Resilience and an expert on disinformation, said the episode tracks with Russia’s modus operandi.
“This definitely seems like it could fit the bill of the types of provocation that Russia has been known to be behind in the past,” Jankowicz told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “Russia uses these pre-existing fissures in society to drive further polarization or drive issues that are hot button issues in society, generally, without regard for, for the context.”
Such moves have been part and parcel of Russia’s foreign policy for decades and a key feature of its so-called “hybrid war” since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
“Driving polarization in Western societies is really an easy way to have wins for Russia,” Jankowicz said.
That hasn’t been restricted to amplifying divisive topics in the digital sphere. During the 2016 U.S. elections, dueling protests unfolded on the streets of Houston, Texas, both for and against a local Islamic center. What neither side fully knew at the time was that both protests were spawned by Facebook groups made by operatives in Moscow.
“I think we’d like to think that at this point, Russia is just doing stuff on the internet and then poisoning dissidents every so often. But these sorts of on-the-ground operations — which sometimes aren’t carried out in the most perfect way — are 100% the sort of thing that they’ve done in the past, and that they continue to do even after the U.S. election in 2016,” Jankowicz said.
Jankowicz noted that Russia is an equal opportunity inciter, switching from causes on the right to left at will, and the country is no stranger to using antisemitism as a weapon. In fact, it’s a trick cribbed straight from the Soviet Union playbook.
“During the Soviet period, especially in places like Germany, Russia, would very deliberately deface memorials and use antisemitic attacks, as late as the 80s, in order to stoke the specter of antisemitism,” she said.
In the late 1980s, before German reunification, Rainer Sonntag, the leader of West Germany’s most influential Neo-Nazi group, was doing double duty as a spy for both the East German Stasi and Soviet KGB. During the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem, the Stasi forged hundreds of letters of support from “veterans of the Waffen-SS” in an attempt to embarrass West Germany.
“They have been on both sides of issues like civil and human rights issues related to the Black population in the United States, LGBT rights, and all sorts of things. So it’s not beyond them to play both sides,” Jankowicz said.
Russia has leveled the same charges at the West, most commonly at Ukraine and the United States. Last month, Moscow claimed U.S.-backed forces instigated the mob which stormed Makhachkala airport looking for Jews in Dagestan, Russia
“The events in Makhachkala last night were inspired also through social networks, not least from the territory of Ukraine, by the hands of agents of Western special services,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the time.
“This is something we’ve noted previously in a variety of online influence campaigns — more of a ‘muddying of the waters’ than a clear ‘trying to do X’ type operation,” said Justin Crow, a researcher at the University of Sussex who focuses on Russia and open source intelligence. “Almost always around highly sensitive contemporaneous cultural issues — i.e. exploiting circumstantial events to sow discord, without that discord needing to be specifically targeted at one group or another.”
Russia isn’t the only country deploying the strategy and involving Jewish institutions. Two weeks ago, a fire was set outside of a synagogue in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan. The building was only lightly damaged, but Armenian authorities were quick to open an investigation, claiming that the arson was committed by a foreign national who was only in the country for a few hours.
Like the situation in France, news of the attack was most widely spread by media connected to an opposing nation: Azerbaijan, which has been at war with Armenia over the disputed region known as Nagorno-Karabakh to Azeris and Artsakh to Armenians.
Azerbaijani media has reported that the attack, as well as a vandalism of the same synagogue in early October — just before the start of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7 — had been claimed by ASALA, an Armenian Marxist-Leninist group that had fought with Turkey in the 1970s and 80s but has largely been considered inactive since 1991.
“We didn’t know what had happened yet, and Azerbaijani channels were already circulating photos of the building,” said Rima Varzhapetyan, the head of Armenia’s Jewish community, according to the Times of Israel. “Obviously, there are some forces that work not against us Jews, but against Armenia. This is outrageous.”

The Third Part of the Night [Trzecia część nocy] (1971)
Tumblr media
A vaccine is perhaps the most succinct distillation of blood as a symbol of both life and death. Its solution often includes something which in an altered form could be considered harmful, and yet it is intended to protect life by granting immunity. Its preparation, certainly in the early days of discovery, required a sort of violence. The vaccine is a contribution to the community brought about by sacrifice. In the occupied Poland of The Third Part of the Night, war rages, but the threat of Typhus remains strong, a pestilence in the landscape further contributing to the apocalyptic feel in the deserted streets. Loss defines existence here. The film opens with Michał witnessing the death of his wife, mother, and child, and violence can burst out at any moment: people are gunned down at random in the street or herded into vans, Resistance members pursued and assassinated. Amidst all of this senseless violence, the most that Michał can do is to allow his body to be used as a feeding ground for lice as part of a Typhus vaccine development project. It’s horrible, thankless work, leaving the participants itchy, feverish, and restless.
It’s this feverishness which contributes to the psychological uncertainty which hangs over The Third Part of the Night like a pall. Doubles abound. Following his wife’s death, he finds another woman who appears to be her doppelgänger. His attempts at forming a family with her and her recently delivered baby are haunted by images of his wife and son, who also appears in a portrait in Michał’s father’s home. A man mistaken for Michał is tortured and lies battered in a hospital, something the man himself confesses he wouldn’t be strong enough to handle. The pervasive guilt—at the death of his family, at his failed attempts to help Resistance efforts—lead to a total mental collapse. Underscoring all of this guilt and collective loss is pervasive Biblical imagery. The film opens and closes with quotations from Revelations, which returns at various points throughout. How could a God who so loved the world allow for all of the suffering brought by Nazi invasion? Michał’s father prays against God in the opening, damning Him for causing such loss, but elsewhere people pray for better outcomes. In the close, the father recites from the Requiem Mass as he lights his manuscript pages on fire, presumably an act of self-immolation. Fleeing the Gestapo in desperation at the closing moments, Michał finds one final double when he pulls back a corpse’s shroud. He looks at the face of death and sees himself, perhaps the only outcome possible in this sort of world.
Andrzej Korzyński’s intentionally and blatantly electronic score is an interesting choice in this WWII film. Leaning in on electric guitar and jazzy vibraphones throughout throws this out of step with the aesthetics of the period and centers it more as a cerebral exploration of this Poland thrust into chaos than a wholly literal one.
An absolutely incredible debut feature from Andrzej Żuławski, even in this first gesture it’s possible to see motifs and concepts which are of interest to him that he explores time and again. Doubling pervades his stories, and he never met a spiral staircase that he didn’t love. There’s a sort of existential psychosexual angst here which anticipates Possession, and the kinetic camera movements anticipate the breakdown scene in that Cold War film or the grandiose battles of On the Silver Globe. While the athletic use of camera is impressive on a technical level, it also perfectly inhabits the mental space the narrative is trying to create. The camera almost recoils at the sight of blood during acts of violence, and Michał’s final breakdown sees the camera nearly as lost and desperate as its subject, whirling about and finding a melding of every space and major figure that has been encountered before. Żuławski here seems to declare that he his here to make just the kind of movie that he wants to make, no matter how often those projects get banned or their productions halted. Because if the censors are gonna make it that damn hard for you to release a film, might as well make it one hell of a commanding humdinger.
THE RULES

A spiral staircase appears in a scene.
Lice are mentioned.

Is Hitler Really Dead?
Among the many, many coverups that came to light regarding second world war are two that are known and yet are never spoken about, except in the hushed recesses of the internet.
The first is the mysterious disappearance of Nazi officer Erich Zimmerman, all records of whom have been scrubbed, after he was last seen in Berlin in 1938 around the time a blue rectangular projectile crashed into The Reich Chancellery.
The second comes seven years later. The supposed last ever photograph of Adolf Hitler was taken on April 28th, 1945. The photo shows Hitler and Schaub standing over the remains of The Reich Chancellery after it was destroyed. Two days later, Adolf Hitler and his wife Eva Braun would take their own lives. And perhaps that is the last ever photograph of Adolf Hitler. Of the real Adolf Hitler. For you see, another photograph was taken on the night of the 29th of April.
Tumblr media
The photograph appears to show the world’s most infamous dictator undergoing some form of metamorphosis, his body and even his clothes flaking off into squares. Was Hitler replaced before he died? Or perhaps Hitler was never real to begin with. Perhaps he was some kind of alien plant, or a lizardman in disguise, installed to bring the world to its knees.
Many believe Hitler survived and left behind some kind of decoy, some poor doppelgänger he shot and left in his stead. Perhaps this is proof the führer didn’t really die that day. If not, what other dark and terrible things might be happening  under our noses, when we’re being told everything is safe again? If he was never human, perhaps he is still out there now.
