My trip to Kaua'i, Hawai'i
Yellow Hibiscus: The state flower of Hawai'i. Called the “pua mao hau hele” or “Ma’o hau hele” in the Hawaiian Language (ʻŌlelo).
Nēnē (Hawaiian Goose): The rarest waterfowl in the world. Nearly brought to extinction in 1990 with 50 wild individuals. Captive-breeding programs and reintroduction efforts have given the native nēnē a chance with now over 3,862 birds statewide. I was lucky enough to see wild nēnē goslings. Very special.
Honu (Green Sea Turtle): An endangered species most commonly found near the Hawaiian Island Chain. Typically reaching sexual maturity around 20 years of age, Green sea turtles nest on the same beach where they hatched. This is a photo I took of a female rising up from the shore to lay her eggs.
Landscape photos I took on my trip in Kaua'i.
Kaua'i is one of many islands comprising the Hawaiian Volcanic Island Archipelago. I bought a Kaua'i Geologic History Book to learn more about the island and I am very excited to read it.
#i didn't say much about the human history and culture. but I loved learning about the native Hawaiian culture and way of life too#it is very important to me as an environmentalist that I understand and am aware of peoples connection to their culture and tradition#especially regarding the land. nature itself. and history.#Anyways. This trip truly reinvigorated my love and compassion for environ. Geoscience and I feel like a new person going into the new year#this is like 2/10ths of all the photos I actually took. So many beautiful sights#happy new year#bread#art#my photos#photography#photos#kauai#kauaihawaii#hawaii#hawaiʻi#nene goose#yellow hibiscus#honu#green sea turtle#mountains#wildlife#wildlife photography

Does anyone know where I can find opinions from Kanaka Maoli ( Native Hawaiian ) folk on pop culture stuff? I've got questions that I want to ask or be answered, but I don't know where to look. I'm also aware that there's a lot more pressing issues at hand for folk, so I don't want to bombard them with silly questions about franchises they've never heard of.

Mary Kawena Pukui
Mary Kawena Pukui was born in 1895 in Kaʻū, Hawaii. Pukui was a scholar who devoted herself to preserving traditional Hawaiian culture. She produced thousands of pages of translations and wrote or contributed to over 50 scholarly works. Pukui co-wrote The Hawaiian Dictionary with Samuel H. Elbert, and the 1986 edition of the book is still the standard source for spelling and definitions in the Hawaiian language. She collected and translated nearly 3,000 Hawaiian proverbs and sayings in the book Ōlelo Noʻeau. Pukui was also a hula expert and composed more than 150 songs and chants.
Mary Kawena Pukui died in 1986 at the age of 91.

every other tiktok i see is another black creator either calling a native hawaiian white and stripping them of their identity and/or saying the recast of david is better JUST because he has darker skin in the casting photo, and i’m so fucking sick of it. all i’ve been seeing from actual fucking hawaiians is a call to stop doing that if you’re not in the community. and no one is listening. and of course, white leftists are waiting for ANY poc to speak on it before going in with their brain-dead blood quantum takes so they don’t look racist. please stop. please stop speaking over the indigenous community that these things actually effect. you have NO RIGHT to be speaking on it just because you’re a poc. amplify the voices of the actual group effected and keep your fucking opinions on an indigenous group to yourself.
#g talks#racism#mine#/mobile#/okay to reblog#< defend this shit and you're blocked#idfc#EVERYONE needs to stop this shit#i have no right to speak on the issues themselves because IT'S NOT FOR ME TO DO#i'm sharing what actual native hawaiians have been saying#if i don't want goyim speaking for and over jews#and arguing with us on OUR issues#then it's fucking stupid and hypocritical to not carry that sentiment over to other groups#y'all need to learn that just bc you're a minority#it DOES NOT mean you have the same experience#or culture or beliefs#as any other minority group#find out what the actual group effected is saying and find out how to help them#and how to amplify THEIR voices#based on what THEY want#not your own fucking opinions no one asked for#it's not fucking hard

Review of United Shades of America: Reflections on Race, Gentrification, and Identity
W. Kamau Bell’s United Shades of America feels like one of those rare shows that doesn’t just scratch the surface of difficult conversations but digs deep into the messiness of what it means to live in the U.S., especially if you’re marginalized. What strikes me about Bell as a host is how he genuinely relates to people. He’s not just another journalist asking questions. You can see he’s putting…

donate to native hawaiians and not the piece of shit tourists who have been asked to not visit for YEARS but still went ahead and did it. send the visitors HOME, not to another island.
[plaintext: donate to native hawaiians and not the piece of shit tourists who have been asked to not visit for YEARS but still went ahead and did it. send the visitors HOME, not to another island. / end plaintext.]
[photo id: a quote tweet that reads: Those of you who don’t live here, I want you to remember this headline, because it is a perfect summary of what it means to be a Hawai‘i resident. All of our tax dollars, state resources, & major efforts go to visitors FIRST, even in emergencies leaving residents devastated.
the tweet being quoted reads: BREAKING: up to 4000 visitors expected to be flown from Maui to Oahu. They will likely be put up in the convention center. Security and food service is being prepared. #HawaiiNewsNow #MauiFires
/ end id.]
#i have VERY little sympathy for any tourists caught in these wildfires#native hawaiians have been begging you all for YEARS to not visit hawai'i when it's in this state#and you all just don't give a shit about what the NATIVES OF THESE ISLANDS have to say#like obviously nobody deserves to die in those fires (except the dirty politicians and billionaires who help make it so hard for residents)#but i feel much more sympathy for the residents of hawai'i who get treated like shit#than the people who go there and treat it like a bouncy house and get treated like royalty#like even if you're NOT blatantly disrespecting hawaiian land and culture you're STILL diverting resources from the residents#don't fucking visit hawai'i. IT'S NOT THAT FUCKING HARD. GIVE A SHIT ABOUT NATIVES FOR ONCE IN YOUR FUCKING LIVES.#sorry (not sorry) but my blood is BOILING right now#i feel so hard for the residents of hawai'i. especially native hawaiians.

// ... genuinely cannot believe it took me this long to realize I didn't actually have her background listed in her about, considering how important it is.
So... fixed that!
#For those curious - she's Black (specifically Afro-Caribbean on her dad's side) and Native Hawaiian!#It comes up pretty often wrt her experiences with family and community and culture.#'Esme why are you listing that as 'background' instead of race or ethnicity' because I've read like six different definitions#and am STILL not 100% sure which one that is. I THINK it's race.#but social studies and geography have always been my weak point by a lot.#I thought Croatia was in Africa. As in the entirely wrong continent.#No i don't know why I thought that.#... I THINK it's race.

I want to talk a little bit about Hawai‘i, because I have been thinking a lot about my people, and our lives.
The year 2023 marks 130 years since the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
On January 17th 1893, American businessman used their connections and military influence to dethrone Queen Liliuokalani by threat of force.
This annexation still impacts my people 130 years later. It still hurts us, it still haunts us,
For the last 130 years my people have suffered under America’s cruelty and indifference.
Unsustainable Tourism haunts us, causing a cost of living crisis, which turns into a rise in poverty, which turns into a rise in individuals experiencing homelessness. This cost crisis disproportionately effects my people, Kānaka Maoli. We cannot even afford to live on our on land. Our ancestral home.
And in turn, tourism then provides the most jobs. This industry pushes us off our land and into poverty, and then it turns around and sells us back our culture as a walking joke.
Our very identity is turned into entertainment. Our very culture is turned into entertainment.
And many of my people have no choice but to sell their culture so they can eat, so they can survive.
We have been put in a never ending cycle of misery and cultural destruction.
In addition, Military Involvement on our islands causes repeated incidents of ecological violence, and land disputes. The military take claim to land that belongs to my people, and they spill chemicals over and over, and poison the water we drink.
My people are suffering. Our culture is suffering.
And everyday more tourists come. Everyday more land is taken to build hotels. Everyday more culture is stripped and bastardized. Everyday more land is taken for military use.
I’m so tired of living this way. I’m so tired of waking up and watching the slow and agonizing death of my people.
I want us to live. I want us to thrive.
I want my people to survive.
I want to survive.
So please read up on the current issues that face Kānaka Maoli. Please educate yourself on my people’s history and current affairs.
Speak up and speak out. Talk about unsustainable tourism, and speak up about how harmful a “vacation” to Hawai‘i can be. Talk about the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and it’s injustice.
Hawai‘i is Hawaiians. Hawai‘i is our history. Hawai‘i is our home. Hawai‘i is the very blood that runs through our veins.
So please do not forget us, and please speak up with us.
Support Hawaiian Sovereignty. Restore Hawai‘i to Hawaiians.

Unfortunately, it's not going to happen for several reasons, chief among them being that secession is not something that can happen.
The US has a vested interest in its continuity as a nation, and due to how its structured, and how there is no legal difference between its "core" and its "colonies" (especially in this case as Hawaii is a state) allowing an exit clause for one state gives ALL OF THEM an exit clause.
What the US CAN do however is pay reparations for the damage done, place further protections onto the already federally protected land in the state, and back movements to teach and promote native Hawaiian culture in the state. (the rest really comes down to the state government of Hawaii itself as it has a lot more immediate power in this situation like deciding what gets taught in their schools and doing more local environmental protections and how they regulate the resorts. Being a state in the US is very similar to being its own country. the reason we don't have semi-autonomous zones is that every state is one)
I don't think it's a radical ideal for the want of Hawai'i to become their own independent country. It should have never been taken over by the US in the first place. For a country whose entire foundation is based upon "separation from a colonial country" it's laughable that they made an entire population that was self governed into a state. It's insulting. It's already blatantly obvious that this whole country was based on lies and blood, and it only continues to perpetuate that. I'm shocked that the Hawai'ian sovereignty movement isn't mainstream even though they have been fighting for it since 1997. Fuck the American government.
#hawaii#what the US did was kinda fucked#and there is a lot we need to do to make it up to them#but they're not geting nationhood back#though revitalizing native Hawaiian culture is still on the table and something I'm sure the state government would do#if they aren't doing it already

I made a little clothing guide for some Dragon Age regions
Some may not be exactly the same as the references that appear in the game or in the concepts, but I wanted to give a little of my vision to the guide.
Ferelden
Ferelden is close to the Frostback Mountains and Orlais and as Leliana and Zevran once said, Ferelden is cold, so I thought it would be a cool idea to put on thick clothes with a lot of fur so the Fereldans can protect themselves from the cold.
Tevinter
Dragon Age 4 is approaching and it's already evident that we're going to be in the Tevinter Imperium, so I discovered that a lot of Tevinter clothing was inspired by clothing from the Byzantine Empire
Orlais
We've already seen in the game and in the concept art that Orlais is all about being flamboyant and flashy and what's more flamboyant and flashy than mid-1500s fashion?
Antiva
Home to the two loves of my life, Zevran and Josephine, Antiva fashion is something I really love… The puffy arms, the breast-enhancing corsets, the leather vests, idk, I just like Antiva
Nevarra
I don't exactly have much to say about nevarra, but I did some research and found some concepts that I thought were interesting, I also saw in some places that said that the kingdom was inspired by the traditional culture of Spain
So I'll leave two references here
One for the traditional clothes and one for what I imagine might look like Nevarra dress
Frostback Basin
In Inquisition we can see that the clothes they wear are quite furry and well protected from the cold, so I think it would be a good idea to inspire some of their clothing in Inuit clothing
The Dalish (1/2/3/4/5)
Well, for the Dalish I had MANY ideas, among them think about adding traditional clothes from some tribes, native Brazilian/American, African, Hawaiian, Inca, Aztec and Mayan
Remembering that I made a great mix of traditional clothes from several tribes and not just one, and that I also have 0 intention of disrespecting any of them, if I have put something wrong or disrespectful you can be free to alert me
Orzammar
I knew little about Turkey, but when I went to research I ended up enchanted with some of the traditional clothes when I went to research about it and I thought that this style would go well with Orzammar
Par Vollen
For Par Vollen, I had a bit of trouble finding it, but I think clothing a little bit closer to the ancient Egyptian style would be something interesting. The light fabrics, the golden jewels adorning the body, idk, I like that idea
Rivain
I was doing some research again and found that part of Rivain's look was inspired by traditional clothing from Islamic Spain and Southeast Asia , so I looked around a bit for something to put here and add one more kingdom to the list
I hope you people enjoyed! Soon I will add more realms as soon as I finish my research
