Now this is a victory👇
After being exposed for encouraging, facilitating, and even participating in the murderous Hamas invasion of southern Israel, UNRWA has been forced to close its headquarters in Jerusalem.

UNRWA shutters eastern Jerusalem headquarters The agency’s exit from Jerusalem is a “historic moment” and “the end of the era of disgrace,” said Knesset member Dan Illouz. By Israel Today Staff • November 27, 2024 On Tuesday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) announced the closure of its headquarters in eastern Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. The move, which marks a significant shift in its operations, comes in the wake of the Israeli government’s decision to sever ties with the agency and recent legislative action banning its activities within Israel. According to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hadath network, UNRWA is transferring key departments, including legal, communications, external relations and the commissioner-general’s office to locations outside Israel. The relocation affects Palestinian employees at the Sheikh Jarrah facility, who have been given 12 months to find alternative employment. The closure follows the Israeli Knesset’s approval in October of a law prohibiting UNRWA’s operations in Israel. Knesset member Dan Illouz, one of the law’s co-sponsors, celebrated UNRWA’s departure, stating, “The evacuation of UNRWA offices from Jerusalem is a historic moment. This is the end of the era of disgrace in which Israel allowed an anti-Israeli organization to operate in the heart of our capital.” The Israeli legislation followed revelations that a number of UNRWA personnel were deeply involved in Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel. UNRWA has consistently denied accusations of ties to terrorism, asserting its neutrality and humanitarian focus. The agency was established in 1949 with the mission of providing education, healthcare and social services to Palestinian refugees across the Middle East. However, critics, including Israeli officials and watchdog groups, have long accused the agency of perpetuating the refugee issue decades after the Palestinians should have been settled, as well as of being thoroughly infiltrated by terrorist groups. David Mencer, the spokesman for the Public Diplomacy Directorate of the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, told reporters, “We have provided much evidence that UNRWA works hand-in-hand with Hamas,” referring to the Hamas server farm found under UNRWA’s Gaza headquarters, the UNRWA staffers who took part in the Oct. 7 massacre and the tunnels found underneath UNRWA schools in Gaza. “UNRWA is useless at aid distribution. UNRWA is useless at education, except glorifying suicide bombers and encouraging Jew-killing, and Israel sees no role whatsoever for UNRWA in Gaza after this war en

Electricity consumption at US data centers alone is poised to triple from 2022 levels, to as much as 390 terawatt hours by the end of the decade, according to Boston Consulting Group. That’s equal to about 7.5% of the nation’s projected electricity demand. “We do need way more energy in the world than we thought we needed before,” Sam Altman, chief executive officer of OpenAI, whose ChatGPT tool has become a global phenomenon, said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland last week. “We still don’t appreciate the energy needs of this technology.” For decades, US electricity demand rose by less than 1% annually. But utilities and grid operators have doubled their annual forecasts for the next five years to about 1.5%, according to Grid Strategies, a consulting firm that based its analysis on regulatory filings. That’s the highest since the 1990s, before the US stepped up efforts to make homes and businesses more energy efficient. It’s not just the explosion in data centers that has power companies scrambling to revise their projections. The Biden administration’s drive to seed the country with new factories that make electric cars, batteries and semiconductors is straining the nation’s already stressed electricity grid. What’s often referred to as the biggest machine in the world is in reality a patchwork of regional networks with not enough transmission lines in places, complicating the job of bringing in new power from wind and solar farms. To cope with the surge, some power companies are reconsidering plans to mothball plants that burn fossil fuels, while a few have petitioned regulators for permission to build new gas-powered ones. That means President Joe Biden’s push to bolster environmentally friendly industries could end up contributing to an increase in emissions, at least in the near term. Unless utilities start to boost generation and make it easier for independent wind and solar farms to connect to their transmission lines, the situation could get dire, says Ari Peskoe, director of the Electricity Law Initiative at Harvard Law School. “New loads are delayed, factories can’t come online, our economic growth potential is diminished,” he says. “The worst-case scenario is utilities don’t adapt and keep old fossil-fuel capacity online and they don’t evolve past that.”

Given adequate funding, she hopes IndigeHub can build a network of food hubs across the Navajo Nation.
The hubs seek to produce, store and distribute food to the one-quarter of Native Americans experiencing food insecurity
In addition to the Navajo Nation, grassroots food hubs are also emerging in places like Arizona. The Star School, serving primarily Native American students near Flagstaff, is developing a food hub with a local food store and growing produce in a greenhouse and garden. Further to the south-west, the Nalwoodi Denzhone Community nonprofit operates a food pantry, a local food store, a community kitchen, and a regenerative farm and mobile chicken tractor on the San Carlos Apache Reservation.
“If we can build these hubs, we can fill those gaps in the food system,” said Adams.
Hill agreed, saying the food hub model is a step toward food security and food sovereignty long denied to Hopi people. “If we don’t have access to and control over the food system, our seeds, and food production,” she said, “we become extremely vulnerable”.

The Magyar invasion of Saint Gall from the Codex Sangallensis 602, manuscript dated 15th C. CE
"According to tradition, Saint Gall, a learned, probably Irish monk and faithful disciple to Saint Columbanus, founded a hermitage on the site that would come to encompass the abbey St. Gall around 610.
The abbey of St. Gall flourished during the Carolingian Era (750-887), emerging as a regional center of learning and trade. Housing one of the first monastery schools north of the Alps, the abbey had grown into a massive monastic center, replete with large guest houses, a working hospital, farms and stables, and a renowned library. The abbey quickly became a magnet for Anglo-Saxon and Irish scholars and monks who copied and illuminated manuscripts. Wealthy nobles, in turn, enriched the abbey through patronization and donations of land. By the turn of the ninth century, the abbey was among the most prestigious and wealthiest in Europe.
Three chroniclers substantiate, in different versions written between 970 and 1074, of a Magyar attack on St. Gall and its environs. The Alemannian Annals, written in the ninth and tenth centuries, mention the Magyars nine times, while the St. Gallen Annals of the tenth century do so fifteen times. The most interesting information about the Magyar sack comes from the chronicle of the monk Ekkerhart IV who lived more than a century after the invasion. According to him, as the Magyars swept through Swabia and entered the vicinity of Lake Constance, Abbot Engilbert took protective measures to ensure the survival of the monastery. He ordered the abbey’s old monks and young students to move to Wasserburg, which lies along Lake Constance and near Lindau, to await the siege. The younger, stronger monks were to seek refuge in the woods and hills near the village of Bernhardzell, to the northwest of St. Gall.
On May 1, 926, the Magyars stormed St. Gall. The attackers advanced to the church of St. Mangen and set it on fire. They also tried to set fire to Wiborada’s hermitage, as they could not locate its entrance. Meanwhile, other Magyar warriors ransacked the monastery, taking what booty they could find.
Despite observing their lust for loot, the chronicles praise the Magyars in their ability to assume battle formation in a matter of only a few seconds, in their use of a sophisticated network of couriers to communicate with troops from afar, and in their mastery of various weapons. Noted further were the Magyars’ love of wine, music, dance, and fresh, tasty, meats.
After a few days of rest, the Magyars moved on to target other Swabian cities, leaving the imbecilic Heribald behind. When the monks and friars returned to St. Gall to assess the damage, they questioned Heribald about what he had seen. He reportedly said, “They were wonderful! I have never seen such cheerful people in our monastery. They distributed plenty of food and drink.”"

Hassan Nasrallah
Ruthless head of Lebanon’s Hezbollah who led his movement for more than 30 years
Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Hezbollah, has died aged 64 in an Israeli bomb attack on the movement’s HQ in Dahiyeh, Beirut. His death came after 11 months of conflict between his fighters, based in Lebanon, and Israel.
On 7 October last year Hamas militants from Gaza entered Israel and killed more than 1,200 people. The next day Nasrallah ordered cross-border bombardments on Israel, and a limited conflict of attrition followed. This month Israel dramatically escalated matters by assassinating Hezbollah leaders, infiltrating the group’s security apparatus, hitting tower blocks and sabotaging pagers, walkie-talkies and arms silos, while rebuffing US calls for a ceasefire.
Over three decades Nasrallah, politically astute and often ruthless, transformed his Shia Muslim community, the largest yet most marginalised of Lebanon’s 18 sects – Muslim, Christian and Druze – into Beirut’s powerbrokers. His “party of God” also grew from a local militia into a disciplined body active elsewhere in the region.
Adored by supporters, Nasrallah was essential to Hezbollah’s success. His state-within-a-state runs schools, clinics, scout troops, support for farming, an alternative banking system, armed checkpoints, prisons, radio and TV stations and telecom networks.
Central to Hezbollah’s ethos is muqawama – resistance to Israel and its allies.
Hezbollah claimed credit when in 2000 Israel ended its 18-year-long occupation of southern Lebanon. The militia armed Palestinian factions during the second intifada of 2000-05 (the first having come in 1987-93); it trained Houthi rebels in Yemen and Shia factions in Iraq and Bahrain.
Nasrallah’s fighters became the most powerful non-state military in the Middle East. Hezbollah’s estimated 60,000 troops and 150,000 Iranian-supplied rockets eclipsed Lebanon’s national army.
In July 2006 Hezbollah fought a month-long war with Israel, with more than 1,100 dead on the Lebanese side, and more than 160 Israelis killed. Once hostile Sunnis hailed Nasrallah as the restorer of Arab pride. Their mood changed when in 2012 his forces joined President Bashar al-Assad and Iran in an internal Syrian war that killed half a million mostly Sunni civilians.
In October 2019 many Shia joined protests against him after gross mismanagement led Lebanon to the brink of bankruptcy. Foes blamed Nasrallah for overseeing the same corrupt political system he had once condemned.
Despite championing the Palestinian cause, Hezbollah did little to ease insufferable conditions for Palestinians in Lebanon. Then in August 2020, there was an explosion caused by 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate in a part of Beirut harbour under Hezbollah control.
The blast killed 218, rendered 300,000 people homeless, and caused billions in damage, leading demonstrators to hang Nasrallah in effigy.
Hezbollah had a turbulent role in other aspects of Lebanon’s domestic affairs. It was the only civil war militia that had been allowed to keep its weapons after fighting ended in 1990. Nasrallah became Hezbollah secretary general in February 1992, the day after Israel assassinated his predecessor, Abbas al-Musawi.
He was re-elected in 1993 and repeatedly thereafter. Nasrallah rejected UN calls to disarm after Israel withdrew in 2000 and prevented Lebanon’s army from guarding the southern border.
In 2005 a car bomb in Beirut killed Lebanon’s former premier, Rafik Hariri. UN investigators named Hezbollah and Syria as likely culprits. Two months later massive “cedar revolution” protests forced Syrian troops out of Lebanon after 29 years of domination.
Yet Nasrallah choreographed a pro-Syrian alliance with Michel Aoun, a Christian former renegade general newly returned from exile in France. Hezbollah scored well in June polls, and two members joined the cabinet for the first time.
When Lebanon’s pro-western prime minister, Fouad Siniora, rejected Nasrallah’s demand for a blocking veto, Hezbollah shut down parliament for 18 months. In May 2008 Hezbollah gunmen crushed opponents in Beirut, Sidon, Tripoli and Aley – contradicting Nasrallah’s promise never to attack fellow citizens. Still, many Lebanese adored him for defying Israel and affirming their dignity.
Others resented his outsized influence. They said he was an Iranian proxy who killed enemies, including Shia intellectuals, brought starvation to besieged Syrian towns, and recreated the schisms of Lebanon’s 1975-90 civil war. That conflict, and especially the Israeli invasion and occupation of 1982, inspired the young cleric to choose a political path.
However, the greatest impetus was Ayatollah Khomeini’s 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran. As the Lebanese analyst Saleh el-Machnouk put it, by 2020 Lebanon had become a “mafia-militia nexus [where] Iran uses Hezbollah as a subcontractor”.
Born in Bourj Hammoud, then a mainly Christian Armenian town, Hassan was the eldest of nine children of Mahdiyya Safi al-Din and Abdul Karim Nasrallah, a grocer. Hassan devoured Islamic texts while his siblings played football. When war erupted in 1975, the family fled to their ancestral village of Bazourieh, near Tyre. Hassan joined Amal (“hope”), the mostly Shia movement that opposed traditional elites, whether Shia, Sunni or Christian.
In 1976 the penniless 16-year-old left for the famous Iraqi Shia seminary in Najaf. Al-Musawi, a fellow Lebanese exile, became his mentor. After Iraq expelled Lebanese students in 1978, Nasrallah studied with Al-Musawi in Baalbek, in the Beqaa Valley, and joined Amal’s politburo.
By 1982 younger Shias such as Nasrallah were deserting Amal for Khomeini’s camp.
Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards based in Lebanon turned these radicals into Hezbollah. Its affiliates conducted suicide attacks in 1983 that killed more than 300 US and French peacekeeping soldiers. They later fought Amal and kidnapped westerners such as Terry Waite for the benefit of Iran.
In 1989 Nasrallah moved to Iran to study at the seminary in Qom. Back in Lebanon, in 1991 he grudgingly accepted the Syrian-backed Taif power-sharing accord that formally ended the civil war. A month after he became secretary general of Hezbollah, it was accused of killing 29 people at the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires; in 1994 another assault on an Argentinian Jewish communal centre claimed 85 lives.
Hassan never stood for election; instead, the speaker of parliament and former rival, the Amal leader Nabih Berri, conveyed his views to the world. Nasrallah admitted Tehran was Hezbollah’s chief sponsor. Nonetheless, foreign intelligence claimed that the party benefited from narcotics traffic, an illicit diamond trade and millions more from expatriate tycoons.
Nasrallah cemented his image as a consensual national figure with Maronite Christian clergymen. He promised not to impose theocratic rule on a religiously diverse and often secular public and arranged for Hezbollah to contest elections between 1992 and 2022.
He displayed a dignified response when his son, Mohammed Hadi, died fighting Israelis in September 1997. Nasrallah helped Lebanon’s national army crush a revolt by Sobhi Tufaili, an anti-Iranian populist and first secretary general of Hezbollah, four months later. He tutored Al-Assad before the latter became Syria’s president in 2000. He also returned from Israel 29 Hezbollah captives and 400 Palestinian prisoners in 2004.
Often, however, the moderate facade would slip. Nasrallah praised Holocaust deniers and in 2001 reportedly called Jews “miserly and cowardly”.
In 2008 Nasrallah’s de facto deputy, Imad Mughniyeh, was blown up in Damascus. After that the leader avoided public appearances, and coordinated regional strategy with Qassem Suleimani, Iran’s external operations chief, himself killed by a US drone strike in 2020.
After another two-year shutdown of parliament, Hezbollah ensured that it elected Aoun as president in late October 2016. Following Lebanon’s economic meltdown, however, Nasrallah’s coalition lost its majority in assembly elections in 2022. That same year Hezbollah agreed a maritime and gas field demarcation agreement with Israel. But showing solidarity with Hamas after 7 October, and so displacing 65,000 Israelis in the north of the country, led to his death.
Nasrallah’s wife, Fatima Yassin, and their children Jawad, Ali and Mahdi, survive him; his daughter Zeinab died in the same blast as him.

Excerpt from this story from the New York Times:
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has a line about the state of small-scale agriculture in America these days.
It’s drawn from the National Agricultural Statistics Service, which shows that as the average size of farms has risen, the nation had lost 544,000 of them since 1981.
“That’s every farm today that exists in North Dakota and South Dakota, added to those in Wisconsin and Minnesota, added to those in Nebraska and Colorado, added to those in Oklahoma and Missouri,” Mr. Vilsack told a conference in Washington this spring. “Are we as a country OK with it?”
Even though the United States continues to produce more food on fewer acres, Mr. Vilsack worries that the loss of small farmers has weakened rural economies, and he wants to stop the bleeding. Unlike his last turn in the same job, under former President Barack Obama, this time his department is able to spend billions of dollars in subsidies and incentives passed under three major laws since 2021 — including the biggest investment in conservation programs in U.S. history.
The plan in a nutshell: Multiply and improve revenue streams to bolster farm balance sheets. Rather than just selling crops and livestock, farms of the future could also sell carbon credits, waste products and renewable energy.
“Instead of the farm getting one check, they potentially could get four checks,” Mr. Vilsack said in an interview. He is also helping schools, hospitals and other institutions to buy food grown locally, and investors to build meatpacking plants and other processing facilities to free farmers from powerful middlemen.
But it’s far from clear whether new policies and a cash infusion will be enough to counteract the forces that have pushed farmers off the land for decades — especially since much of the money is aimed at reducing carbon emissions, and so will also go toward large farming operations because they are the biggest polluters.
The number of farms has been declining since the 1930s, in large part because of migration from rural areas to cities and greater mechanization of agriculture, which allowed operators to cultivate larger tracts with fewer people. Over time, the federal government abandoned a policy of managing production to support prices, prompting growers to become more export-oriented while local distribution networks atrophied.
The last half-decade has been more disruptive than most. First came a trade war against China under former President Donald J. Trump, which drew retaliatory tariffs that cut into U.S. exports of farm products like soybeans and pork. Then came the pandemic, which scrambled supply chains and sapped farm labor, leaving crops to rot in the fields.
After Congress cushioned the blow with relief for farmers hurt by pandemic disruptions, things started to turn around. Even as the cost of supplies like fertilizer and seed rose, so did food prices, and farm incomes increased. In 2023, default rates on farm loans neared record lows.
“Farm balance sheets are the healthiest they’ve ever been in the aggregate,” said Brad Nordholm, the chief executive of Farmer Mac, a large secondary market for agricultural credit. “The tools available to American farmers to have a more predictable return, even when commodity prices change and input prices change, is greater than it’s ever been before.”
But wholesale crop prices are expected to decline over the coming year. Rising interest rates have made it more difficult to finance planting and harvesting, borrow for an expansion or just get into agriculture — especially since land values jumped 29 percent from 2020 to 2023.
That’s especially true for the smallest farmers, who are far less likely to be tapped into Department of Agriculture assistance programs and are more vulnerable to adverse weather, labor shortages and consumer whims.
“I think in some ways they’re in a worse position than before the pandemic,” said Benneth Phelps, executive director of the nonprofit Carrot Project, which advises small farmers in New England. “We see a lot of farmers making hard decisions right now about whether to stay in or get out, because they’ve run out of steam.”
That’s where the American Rescue Plan, the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law come in.
The laws have collectively provided about $60 billion to the Agriculture Department, which has parceled it out across a variety of priorities, from relieving farmers’ debt to paying them to reduce their carbon emissions.
The biggest chunk — about $19.5 billion — has breathed new life into subsidies to encourage conservation practices that improve the land, like cutting back on plowing and planting cover crops to sequester carbon in the soil. Some of the programs had shrunk in successive Farm Bills, which are five-year legislative packages that covers most agricultural subsidies, and about two-thirds of farmers who applied each year got nothing.
The new funding has added 16,000 recipients over the past two years. Preliminary data shows the expansion is allowing smaller farms to take part.

Charles Clinton Spaulding, Entrepreneur (1874-1952)
Charles Clinton Spaulding led the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company from 1900 to 1952, a span during which North Carolina Mutual was the largest business owned by African-Americans. Known during his life as "Mr. Negro Business," Spaulding was largely responsible for the success of North Carolina Mutual, a firm that made Durham known as "the Black Wall Street." Born during Reconstruction in Columbus County, North Carolina, Spaulding grew up on the farm owned by his father, Benjamin. During his childhood, Charles rose early every morning and worked during most of his waking hours. Though mainly a farmer, Benjamin was also an entrepreneur, working part-time as a smith and carpenter. Aside from his accomplishments in agriculture and business, Benjamin served as the sheriff of Columbus County. In 1894, Charles Spaulding left the family farm for Durham, where he settled with an uncle and took jobs as a bellhop, dishwasher, and waiter. During his hours off from these menial jobs, Spaulding attended school, earning the equivalent of a modern high-school diploma in 1898. He was then hired as manager of a black-owned cooperative grocery store. After the store's owners became discouraged about its prospects, they sold their interests in the store in 1899, causing it to collapse and leaving Spaulding $300 in debt. Hard work alone would likely have prevented Spaulding's debt from leaving him destitute, but after the grocery store failed, his assiduity was supplemented by a fortuitous circumstance: in 1898, seven black entrepreneurs, including the uncle with whom Spaulding lived, founded the North Carolina Mutual and Provident Association. Each of the seven invested $50 in the new venture. Two of the entrepreneurs—Spaulding's supportive uncle, A. M. Moore, and a prominent Durham barber , John Merrick—noticed Spaulding's managerial gifts while he was head of the grocery store. Because the seven founders of North Carolina Mutual had other successful careers, none of them had time to run the new company, so they hired Spaulding to sell policies. In 1900, they named him general manager. (The title was slightly misleading, for Spaulding was, at the time, the company's only employee.) Building a network of agents across North Carolina, Spaulding quickly expanded North Carolina Mutual's operations. In 1904, the company began selling policies in South Carolina; by 1908, the firm had 100,000 clients. Shrewdly advertising life insurance policies on medical thermometers and spittoons, the company continued to grow during the next decade. In 1919, Merrick died, and the board of North Caorlina Mutual elected Spaulding secretary-treasurer. He used the clout obtained with this new role to restructure the company. That year it was renamed the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, and soon thereafter, its operations were in thirteen states and the District of Columbia. Though Spaulding had been the company's de facto leader since 1900, he was named president after Moore's death in 1923.
By the the late 1920s, Spaulding had achieved national prominence, earned national business awards, and joined President Herbert Hoover's Federal Relief Committee. Like other insurance companies, North Carolina Mutual suffered a series of setbacks during the Great Depression, but Spaulding restructured the company as needed by trimming expenses and reducing the size of the firm's staff. According to Sylvia Jacobs, in a letter to W.E.B. Du Bois, Spaulding asserted that the Depression would cultivate a generation of superior business managers by forcing them to operate businesses more efficiently. During World War II, Spaulding not only assisted the U.S. Government in selling war bonds to African-Americans but also invested a large percentage of North Carolina Mutual's funds in the bonds. In 1948, Spaulding, by then an American business icon, visited much of Europe; he subsequently wrote, "I shall always feel grateful that my ancestors were transplanted to North America. It is the best place in the world that I have found to live and leave one's mark." Spaulding died in 1952, on his seventy-eighth birthday. His optimism, industry, and thrift influenced a generation of African-American entrepreneurs.

Mexico City could run out of water in a month unless it rains
"Experts say that Mexico City could run out of drinking water by the end of June, an event locals call "Day Zero."
Mexico City has long struggled to bring water to its millions of residents, but three consecutive years of low rainfall and high temperatures have created a serious emergency.
The Cutzamala water system — a series of treatment plants, reservoirs, and canals that provide water to tens of millions of people — is running dry.
Conditions are so bad that the North American Drought Monitor classified the federal district containing Mexico City as "severe" on April 30. Locals expect "Day Zero" could come as soon as June 26, according to Mexico Business News.
While local politicians downplayed the water crisis for months, several neighborhoods have already seen their water run out, CNN reported.
The Mexican government describes the Cutzamala system as "vital to the lives of millions of Mexicans" living in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area and the Valley of Toluca Metropolitan Area.
The system normally moves about 15 cubic meters of water a second and provides service to about 22 million people. It's now operating at 28% capacity, The Washington Post reported.
Crumbling infrastructure is also contributing to the problem. About 40% of Mexico City's water is lost due to leaky pipes and other issues, the Post reported...
Researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico said in a study that intensive water capture, using treated residual water for agriculture, and refilling aquifers with surface water, could save the Cutzmala system, according to Mexico Business News.
The study found that only 75% of farms in the area use irrigated water, and most do not reuse the water when they can. Still, the study's plan would cost an estimated $5 billion, the report says.
Mexico's National Water Commission announced in February that it's working on projects to improve the Cutzamala system and help supplement some of the water it is losing. As part of the action, the Mexico City Water System introduced a plan to improve infrastructure reliability, strengthen programs for private company participation in the water network, and harvest rainwater in schools, the agency said."

As a young school entrepreneur, he started designing and making built-to-order, garden sheds, and other timber products selling them through his local network and beyond. His continuing interests in and experience with woodworking have led him to focus on designing and making beehives in recent years. He personally started beekeeping after having spent a month working on a beekeeping farm in Wexford in 2013.

The Social Impact of Solar Hybrid Inverters in Developing Countries
The delivery of steady electricity proves difficult for developing nations to achieve. Broad swaths of underserved and rural communities experience ongoing power interruptions while substantial sections of people in these areas exist separate from the national power system. The existing power shortages create multiple obstacles to economic growth limit student learning and medical services and reduce superior life quality for people. Solar hybrid inverters bring fundamental changes through their ability to offer both power distribution and community and economic improvement potential. The innovative technology delivers multiple benefits that transform developing nations' infrastructure.
Bridging the Energy Gap
Solar hybrid inverters transform traditional power systems by solving the challenges faced by regions dependent on unreliable grid electricity or having no power at all. Solar energy integrated with battery storage systems and linkage to grid power networks provides stable durability for electrical power supplies. These power solutions prove essential in remote locations where introducing extended national electrical infrastructure proves too costly or impossible to implement.
Now these villages can access solar power to supply all their homes as well as schools and local enterprises with electricity. Using renewable energy supplies improves living environments and creates an opportunity to develop pollution-free energy networks for the future.
Enabling Education
In rural locations, electricity access creates direct consequences for educational standards. The power grid instability does not prevent solar hybrid inverters from powering educational facilities. School classrooms benefit from utility items that include lighting and fans with electronic educational materials that improve student learning outcomes. Solar hybrid inverters eliminate the need for children to use hazardous kerosene lamps for study so their health remains safe.
When hybrid inverters power computers and internet connections developing countries achieve digital education equality because their schools receive access to contemporary educational materials. A better-educated workforce develops because of these efforts that lead to long-term regional development.
Improving Healthcare Services
Healthcare facilities located in remote areas need reliable electricity as an essential operational foundation. Solar hybrid inverters guarantee extended power availability to vital medical devices alongside vaccine refrigeration capability as well as nighttime lighting systems. Hospital operations can reallocate their financial resources because solar hybrid inverters eliminate the need for diesel generators and power facilities reliably.
The continual power supply available through hybrid inverters proves fundamental during emergencies that save lives. Healthcare personnel depend on these devices to enhance medical care delivery and improve health results for demographic groups who need better access to services.
Empowering Local Economies
Local enterprises together with small businesses experience growth as a result of electric power access. Solar hybrid inverters serve as reliable power sources for shops and workshops and farming operations so entrepreneurs can expand their business scope. Solar-powered irrigation systems allow farmers to enhance crop production by providing stable power to running irrigation systems alongside small-scale manufacturers who need uninterrupted electricity for machinery functions.
The systems spur economic enhancement which supports job creation while lessening poverty to enhance community self-sustainability. The implementation of solar hybrid inverters provides local technical personnel as well as establishment personnel more opportunities to create employment.
Environmental Benefits
Fossil fuels serve as the primary energy source for many developing nations yet these systems create worsening air quality and higher greenhouse gas concentrations. Solar hybrid inverters present sustainable power solutions that reduce community carbon emissions while advancing clean energy practices. These systems create higher indoor air quality by switching out diesel generators and kerosene lamps which results in better respiratory health benefits for families.
Challenges and Opportunities
The unparalleled advantages of solar hybrid inverters must overcome existing obstacles. The barriers toward adopting these systems include initial expensive requirements together with a lack of knowledge about functionality and benefits in low-income demographics. Solar energy adoption requires government-sponsored assistance through subsidies in combination with financial options for installation and education programs addressing economic benefits of using solar power.
Solar hybrid inverters are becoming more accessible because of both declining solar technology costs alongside innovations in pay-as-you-go business models. The technological progress demonstrates the potential for expanded utilization across regions requiring its application.

I hate tech bros. As a compsci student, we're taught about different algorithms, what they're good at, how they work, and what hardware resources they require. This includes AI. What's happening right now, is tech bros (mostly business people with no engineering experience) are trying to shove AI into everything without considering if it's the right algorithm for the job
So how does it work? AI, is a set of matrices (the rectangle with numbers from middle school) representing the strength of connections in a neural network, that associate a given input with a desired output. These inputs and outputs can represent anything, and the only operation required is repeated matrix multiplication. This means that neural networks for any application can be all accelerated by the same hardware.
What this does is create a very efficient predictive model, which generates a predicted output based on input data, without doing all the complex logic and calculations normally needed to make that prediction. This has similar benefits to a lookup table, which has a set of pre calculated answers to problems that you can look up instead of doing complex math.
This is why Chat GPT and most of the other big models we see suck. They don't understand your questions, or the information they read, or art and symbolism, they just predict how a human would respond to a prompt. Sure, they are an efficient alternative to simulating an entire human brain just to answer questions. But simulating or predicting responses from an entire human brain is useless anyway because we already have EIGHT BILLION REAL PEOPLE who are happy to help each other, make art or do countless other tasks if you pay them, and they're far more efficient And capable than the server farms companies trying to replace them with.
So is AI useless? No, AI is great when you actually need to make predictions, but the thing you're predicting would require more processing power and time to simulate than the AI model would take to make a prediction. The most useful application I've heard of is controlling fusion reactors.
Fusion reactors could generate enormous amounts of cheap safe and clean energy, usually by compressing plasma in a magnetic field or with lasers. The issue is that the plasma is turbulent, and if it breaks containment, the reaction stops and needs to be restarted, and that's if you can get it confined in the first place. If we could simulate the plasma and predict the turbulence, we could modify the field or laser configuration to get it contained and keep it that way, but the computing power to do this fast enough to actually respond just doesn't exist. Fusion research had been focused on finding a way around this for a while, but recent research showed that AI generated predictions are good enough to work for control and a variety of other use cases and can run on hardware that actually exists. With this development, the first break even fusion reaction happened in 2022 at the Laurence Livermore National Lab, and energy generating reactors are already being built, with commercial power plants planned for as early as 2028.
Here's the article from the LLNL about their experiments with AI for their inertial confinement reactor
That's what happens when you use AI (or any other tool for that matter) for what it's actually designed for, rather than wasting enormous amounts of energy trying to stuff shitty (often unethical) tech demos like Chat GPT into every product imaginable just so you can tell you tech bro investors that you're "innovative"
ed zitron, a tech beat reporter, wrote an article about a recent paper that came out from goldman-sachs calling AI, in nicer terms, a grift. it is a really interesting article; hearing criticism from people who are not ignorant of the tech and have no reason to mince words is refreshing. it also brings up points and asks the right questions:
if AI is going to be a trillion dollar investment, what trillion dollar problem is it solving?
what does it mean when people say that AI will "get better"? what does that look like and how would it even be achieved? the article makes a point to debunk talking points about how all tech is misunderstood at first by pointing out that the tech it gets compared to the most, the internet and smartphones, were both created over the course of decades with roadmaps and clear goals. AI does not have this.
the american power grid straight up cannot handle the load required to run AI because it has not been meaningfully developed in decades. how are they going to overcome this hurdle (they aren't)?
people who are losing their jobs to this tech aren't being "replaced". they're just getting a taste of how little their managers care about their craft and how little they think of their consumer base. ai is not capable of replacing humans and there's no indication they ever will because...
all of these models use the same training data so now they're all giving the same wrong answers in the same voice. without massive and i mean EXPONENTIALLY MASSIVE troves of data to work with, they are pretty much as a standstill for any innovation they're imagining in their heads
