Given adequate funding, she hopes IndigeHub can build a network of food hubs across the Navajo Nation.
The hubs seek to produce, store and distribute food to the one-quarter of Native Americans experiencing food insecurity
In addition to the Navajo Nation, grassroots food hubs are also emerging in places like Arizona. The Star School, serving primarily Native American students near Flagstaff, is developing a food hub with a local food store and growing produce in a greenhouse and garden. Further to the south-west, the Nalwoodi Denzhone Community nonprofit operates a food pantry, a local food store, a community kitchen, and a regenerative farm and mobile chicken tractor on the San Carlos Apache Reservation.
“If we can build these hubs, we can fill those gaps in the food system,” said Adams.
Hill agreed, saying the food hub model is a step toward food security and food sovereignty long denied to Hopi people. “If we don’t have access to and control over the food system, our seeds, and food production,” she said, “we become extremely vulnerable”.

Been playing project zomboid (incredibly harsh survival game with hordes of zombies) on an online server, with a lot of people I wouldn't normally hang out with (random dudes mostly) and something really struck me as lovely.
When I arrived, one specific guy scooped me up to take me on a scavenging trip with him and his pals, gave me weapons and armor and a bag, found a car for me, etc etc. It was as random as 'hey wanna come along?' When seeing me pathetically waffling around the spawn zone. This made me decide to stay, to try persisting through the many deaths of a new player without many skills yet.
And almost always, when I'd die, a random person would casually swoop in to help me get my stuff back. Every time I tried to repay them they waved it off.
Eventually I got established and was able to help others- bringing them to get their stuff, giving them supplies, denying all payment just like everyone has for me. Then these newbies who stuck around would turn around and do the same for others. It's had a compounding effect- one person is helped, and they help others, over and over again.
It just reminds me of how humans are at their core. One kind act inspired another, and another, and another.
We are wired to help each other. To lift each other up when facing disaster and a common goal. Modern society may have distanced us from each other and from our core instincts, but in certain places it shines through that we got this far by sticking together and supporting each other.

New grocer turns food swamp into hub for healthy food options on Detroit's east side
We first brought you this story back in February about a Black-owned grocery store set to open on the city's east side, and now it has come full circle as we take a closer look at the work being done to create a more equitable food system in Detroit.
"The city really showed up and showed out on our first day, and it's been very steady ever since," Raphael Wright said.
"This store is the only convenient grocery store that's in this area," Wright continued.
Over the course of six years, Wright, with the help of crowdfunding and a grant from Motor City Match, took what once was a food swamp or an area with more access to less nutritious foods than nutrient-dense foods and turned it into a hub for fresh produce.
"I do want a healthier Detroit," Wright said.
His goal is to aid in a large-scale effort to create a more sustainable and equitable food system in the city.
"He came already connected to the community," Winona Bynum said.
"So, he opened with the idea of making sure that he's serving the community's needs," she continued.
Bynum, a registered dietitian, heads Detroit's Food Policy Council, a group dedicated to supporting grocers like Wright while ensuring Detroiters are aware of healthy food options and policies promoting food security.
Detroit is continuing its coverage on food insecurity.
In an east side neighborhood, one business owner is taking the initiative to close the food gap.
The last Black-owned grocery store in Detroit closed its doors in 2014, and now there's a new owner in town working to bring culturally appropriate food back to the neighborhood. He's taking matters in his own hands to make Black history in his own backyard.
"This neighborhood is classed as a desert because there's no immediate grocery store in it," said Raphael Wright, owner of Neighborhood Grocery. "I'm on this mission of rebuilding the neighborhoods that I grew up in and that starts with food."
The building is currently under construction, but there's a bigger vision in the works. That vision is to bring a full-service grocery store to the corner of Manistique and Essex in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood.
"Only about five to 10% of Detroit is designated as a food desert," Bynum said.
"However, we do have the need for more food access; we're not where we want to be," she continued.
In fact, according to the Council's latest food metrics report, nearly 70% of Detroit households are food insecure, a 7% increase since 2019, confirming the city's need for the Neighborhood Grocery and a hope for more full-service stores just like it.
"As a black person, we've got a lot to fight for, and we can't do it off McDonald's," Wright said.
"So, it's time to put some healthier food options in the community," he continued.
Neighborhood Grocery is located in Detroit's Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood; it's now open Tuesday - Sunday from 9 AM - 9 PM.
According to Wright, this is just the store's "soft opening," and he's using this time to collect community feedback before November's grand opening.

I have always enjoyed the seafood that Fish & Co dished up. They do have quite a few fish & chips varieties on the menu and the last I counted was eight. But these are the two that I usually went for when I am there - Seafood Platter for 1 and Deep-fried Swordfish Collar which I don’t find in other places.
Tumblr media
For the Deep-fried Swordfish Collar with Spicy Mango Sauce ($22.95++), I went with the yellow rice and fries. When I first tried the swordfish, it was priced at a very reasonable S$16 or S$17 for two big pieces of collar. Now the portion had shrunken and the price gone up north though it still tasted as good, just not as satisfying. Remember to dip the fried chunks of fish meat into the spicy sweet sauce with carries a hint of fruity fragrant. The rice was really good too with flakes of fish meat, sultanas and capsicums.

"How do you stop yourself from just dipping your fingers into the chocolate when no one is looking?"
Consider what you're actually asking me. I mean that genuinely. You're actually so close to cracking into the problem with modern food service. What IS stopping me, a low wage full time employee who could never afford a house, from violating food safety when no one is around? What's stopping minimum wage fast food employees?
