Excerpts on the relationship of Leopold and Loeb
From the Psychiatric Testimony
William White (psychiatrist and defense expert):
It was a peculiarly bizarre confluence of two personalities, each of which satisfied the needs of the other.
Bernard Gluek (psychiatrist + defense expert):
He [Leopold] told me of his attitude toward Loeb and of how completely he had put himself in the role of slave in connection with him. He said, "I can illustrate it to you by saying that I felt myself less than the dust beneath his feet," quoting from one of the poems of Lawrence Hope. He told me of his abject devotion to Loeb, saying that he was jealous of the food and drink that Loeb took, because he could not come as close to him as did the food and drink.
Dr. H.S. Hulbert
Each boy felt inadequate to carry out the life he most desired unless he had some one else in his life to complement him, to complete him. Leopold, on the one hand, wanted a superior for a companion. Loeb, on the other, wanted some one to adulate him for a companion. The psychiatric cause for this is not to be found in either boy alone, but in the interplay of their two personalities, caused by their two constitutions and experiences. [...] Their friendship was not based so much on desire as on need, they being what they were.
From Clarence Darrow's Summation For the Defense
These boys, neither one of them, could possibly have committed this act excepting by coming together. It was not the act for one; it was the act of two. It was the act of their planning, their conniving, their believing in each other; their thinking themselves supermen. Without it they could not have done it. It would not have happened. Their parents happened to meet, these boys happened to meet; some sort of chemical alchemy operated so that they cared for each other, and poor Bobby Franks's dead body was found in the culvert as a result. Neither of them could have done it alone.
Their coming together was the means of their undoing. [...] They had a weird, almost impossible relationship. Leopold, with his obsession of the superman, had repeatedly said that Loeb was his idea of the superman. He had the attitude toward him that one has to his most devoted friend, or that a man has to a lover. Without the combination of these two, nothing of this sort probably could have happened.
From the Hulbert-Bowman psychiatric report for Richard Loeb
Each secretly felt that the other was his superior mentally. Each felt that the continuation of this friendship would be extremely profitable to himself, and each felt that abandonment of this friendship would be very hurtful and possibly dangerous.
[...] they planned for each of them, namely [Loeb] and [Leopold] to have ahold of one end of the strangling rope and they would pull at the same time, so that both would be equally guilty of the murder. They did not seem to feel that this would give them a closer tie in their friendship. It was the sharing of culpability.
From the Hulbert-Bowman psychiatric report for Nathan Leopold
During the past two or three years [Leopold] has fitted his closest companion [Loeb] into this King–Slave phantasy. At first this companion had not seemed very good looking to him but after a while become the patient’s ideal of good looks. [...] he felt that his companion was much more brilliant and much more intellectual than he was.
Some time in 1922 or 1923 he made a table or chart for the perfect man. His companion [Loeb] received a score of ninety, [Leopold] received a score of sixty-two and his other friends received scores of about thirty to forty. “At this time there was an almost complete identification of myself with [Loeb]. It was a blind hero worship.”
It is of importance to note that in [Leopold's] relationship with [Loeb], there was this same relationship as in his phantasy, namely, that one individual was under the complete domination of the other [...] This idea of implicit obedience by one party and complete domination by the other, which has so dominated his phantasies for years, expresses itself in his actual relationship with his companion, so that an absolute, solemn pact is made, under which [Leopold] places himself absolutely under the commands of [Loeb], and they have a special code phrase to express this relationship whenever it is to be utilized (this phrase being “for Robert’s sake”).

So that teaser trailer...
Wanted to get together some observations and thoughts, would love to hear what ya’ll are thinking about it too.
-Font choice: questionable
-I’m wondering if the “My name is Nathan Leopold” “Richard Loeb, nice to meet you” talking to the camera bits and the hand clasp are going to be in the movie itself or if they were just filmed for the trailer? If they are going to be included....where would those extreme close up intros even fit? They’re like POV in a hallucination.
-They finally got the title of Leopold’s book correct: it’s 99 not Ninety-Nine.
-When Leopold is typing on the typewriter you can see and hear the original actor hired to be Leopold. The continuity is also all over the place on what he’s typing. First shot: kidnapped Second shot: kill your Third shot: kidnapped Fourth shot: kill your boy These appear to be the only words on the page, as if Leopold is starting his typing there. “Kill your boy” was in none of the ransom notes used, and kidnapped was never the first word on a page.
-The Bobby kidnap scene is all over the place too. The car pulls up and obviously it’s not the same color, make or model as the real car, but for a no budget movie, you take what you can get. But in the background as the car pulls up you can see modern awnings for a florist and a Thai restaurant in the background, along with modern signage, handicapped parking spaces, telephone wires, etc. It might have been easier for them if they filmed it on a residential street-where Bobby was actually picked up-instead of on a street with a bunch of businesses.
-The clothes for all three are inaccurate to what they were wearing on the kidnap day, and everyone is rocking bow ties. Bobby also starts screaming at the top of his lungs in their open windowed car in the middle of a street, Loeb makes no attempt to cover his mouth, not sure how they don’t get caught there.
-We see Judge Caverly, Darrow and Crowe on the stairs, the only actor they tried to get close to looking like the actual person was Darrow, the other two are very far off, Crowe is bald and his suit really doesn’t fit. Nice stairwell they’re filming on though.
-Some time period inaccurate makeup as we get a close up on a flapper and then both the original Leopold and Loeb appear dancing with the film’s choreographer.
-Then some bizarre shots of what looks like a modern fancy dance with teenagers where no actors from the production can be seen. Not sure if this is stock footage or something the production had from some other project?
-Shot of the original Loeb choking the original Leopold in extreme blue lighting.
-Then we get to the see the courtroom crowd. There’s very few of them, they can’t even fill half the courtroom. There’s also no care for period accuracy here: the clothing is off, there’s short sleeves, several extras have a lot of facial hair including thick beards and there are children sitting in. There’s also a female police officer standing guard.
-Loeb throws a peace sign to the crowd, then turns around and looks directly into the camera. His suit is also noticeably too small for him.
-There seems to be a jury? EDIT: Have confirmed from an actor that yup, there’s a jury! A huge change from the actual case!
-The last scene:
Reporter: Alright boys, let’s get some pictures. Reporter: Woah woah woah woah woah. What does it feel like to be celebrities? Are you guys nervous? Loeb: Do I look nervous? (laughs)
This could actually have been taken from actual newspaper coverage, not the celebrities bit, but there were several times where newspapers printed similar responses from Leopold and Loeb about being nervous.
So, if I’m honest, I think it looks like a bit of a mess. This production is also nowhere near done. They’ve only shot one week with the original Leopold-Loeb actors and one week with the current Leopold-Loeb actors. I assume that first week will have to be scrapped and reshot, unless they’re actually planning to just include both sets of actors and hope the audience doesn’t notice?

BOBBY FRANKS
1924 BOBBY FRANKS MURDER Leopold and Loeb - On 21 May 1924, on a Wednesday, 14-year-old Bobby Franks did not come home from school in Chicago. Bobby’s wealthy father searched for his son – but a phone call confirmed his worst fears. ‘Your son has been kidnapped,’ a man identifying himself as ‘Johnson’ said. ‘He is all right. There will be further news in the morning.’ Mr Franks notified the police that night but pleaded with them not to do anything until that morning. At 9am the next day, the distraught father was sent a typed ransom note asking for money in ‘old bills’. Bobby Franks, it was said, would be returned safely within 6 hours of the ransom being paid. In reality, the boy was already dead.
Bobby Franks body was found later that day in a drainpipe at Wolf Lake, near the Indiana border. He had been bludgeoned, tied up and disfigured with acid. Having left a trail of clues, the killers were quickly identified as 2 local teenagers, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb. Both were sons of wealthy Jewish families and highly intelligent. State’s attorney Robert Crowe described the crime at the time as ‘the most terrible criminal offence that has been perpetrated in this generation’. The killers motive was chilling – each was a deadly combination of sociopath and intellectual, and they wanted to show each other how easily they, with their superior intellect, could outwit the police and commit the crime. The pair had cold bloodedly selected Bobby Franks as their victim.
Aged 19, Nathan ‘Babe’ Leopold was one of the leading young ornithologists in the US, but his quiet, sickly demeanour had a killer’s heart. When he met Richard Loeb at the University of Chicago Laboratory School, they became good friends and academic rivals. They both came from large loving families. Leopold’s governess exposed him to a premature sexual initiation, including bondage and sadomasochism. Loeb was raised by a strict disciplinarian who had introduced him to a world of deciet and petty crime.
It was Loeb who came up with the plan to commit ‘the perfect crime, and he found a willing partner in Leopold, who had studied German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Leopold was obsessed with Nietzsche’s superman concept and believed that a person of his intellect could operate outside the boundaries of morality. Their plan progressed to the murder of a stranger, despite careful preparation (opening bank accounts under false names and establishing a line of credit with a hire car company) they made major mistakes.
Leopold and Loeb left clues at almost every step of their crime. A pair of glasses (spectacles) was found at the crime scene. The lenses were common enough, but the hinges, which were patented by a local company, had only just come on to the market. Only 3 pairs had been sold – one of them to Nathan Leopold.
Local shop staff identified the pair as the men who had bought the chisel used to bludgeon the victim, the rope used to tie him up and the hydrochloric acid used to disfigure him – even the paper on which they had typed the ransom note.
A second ransom note, instructing Mr Franks as to how he was to deliver the money, was planted on a train bound for Michigan to throw police off their trail (Leopold and Loeb never intended to collec the ransom money). A rail employee at the local station identified Loeb as having bought a rail ticket to Michigan.
When captured, the teenage killers turned on one another, each accusing the other of bludgeoning Bobby Franks with the chisel. Loeb took the police to where they had dumped the Underwood typewriter in a local lagoon, further sealing the case against them.
After pleading guilty to their crime, the pair would certainly be hanged for kidnapping and murder were it not for the brilliant defence of lawyer Clarence S. Darrow. The trial lasted for months – because the men made a full confession in court, but on the sole question of whether the youths should be executed or imprisoned. ‘WHyd id they kill little Bobby Franks?’ Darrow asked the jury. ‘Not for money, not for spite, not for hate. They killed him because somewhere in the infinite processes that go to the making up of the boy or the man something slipped….’ In his closing argument Darrow admitted that he loathed the case and his clients, but he presented a persuasive arguemnt – persuasive even to the members of the press who questioned his inscerity and speculated on the size of the fee paid to him by the families of the two boys – against the use of the death penalty of any crime. In 1924 the judge sentenced the two killers to life imprisonment for the murder of Bobby Franks and 99 years for his kidnapping, to be served in Chicago’s Joliet State Prison.
The young killers were reunited in 1931 when they were asked to develop educational courses for other prisoners, they wrote a maths textbook that became a standard text throughout the US prison system. Loeb died in 1936 after being attacked in prison, Leopold lived to write his autobiography in 1957 (Life + 99 Years) and was paroled the next year, after serving 33 years in prison. He moved to Puerto Rico, married and worked in the department of health until he died of a heart attack in 1971.

I'm very glad you too are an enjoyer of Victor Fries- I love the character overall but Gotham!Freeze is very handsome to me😳❄️❄️❄️❄️
Also thank you for the reblog of my art!💙
No problem and I must completely agree; Victor Fries was always one of my favourite characters before,
but then Nathan Darrow had to go from derpy puppy
to bloody Arctic Wolf
and my mind goes
I'm quite the lost cause when I think of, as Sephy and I call him, the Ice Daddy.

dating victor fries
(i love this man more than life itself, someone please stop me immediately.)
get ready, because this is one sad fictional man!
for as logical and calm as he appears most of the time, he is almost dangerously obsessive around you.
this is mainly because losing nora had been a huge blow for him. she made him feel alive, made him feel warm, and ever since her death, he's been cold and alone.
but then you came along, and that feeling came back, stronger than ever. it mystifies him sometimes. he lives in a cold, dark world, and you are the light shining through it. he can't imagine losing you, it would break him completely.
you're better than any experiment, frankly. he's more intrigued by your smile than any of his cryogenic research, and it actually sets him back somewhat because he's too busy staring at you to get anything done.
it's really lucky that you love him back, honestly, because he'd probably become some sort of stalker if you didn't. yandere who?
just watching you do everyday things is calming for him. it makes him feel normal.
he's very torn up about his physical state, and how it prevents him from doing certain things with you, like cuddling.
sometimes it'll get so bad that he'll try to convince you to leave, to find somebody else who can suit your needs better.
he cries every time he does it, actually. he doesn't want to lose you! that's one of the worst things he can think of! but... he really does want you to be happy. his low self-esteem does not help him here.
do not let him drive you away. that's the main thing here. he will be convinced that you're too good for him, but you know that if you leave, he'll just... that'll be it, really. and he would stalk you afterwards, just to make sure your new s/o is treating you right. (and even if they are, he'd find some imperfection in them and kill them for it.)
you're pretty much the only person he smiles at or initiates any physical contact with. he thinks you're the most beautiful person in the world.
(requests are open! shoot me an ask and i’ll get back to ya asap. and if you’d like to be tagged when i post, dm me!)
