Queen Maud of Norway, Jay's evening dress, machine-woven silk fabric, silk tulle and metal lace, hand-embroidered with metal and plastic sequins, plastic straws, artificial diamonds and pearls, machine- and hand-stitched, early 1920s.
Queen Maud of Norway was renowned for her stylish dress. Daughter of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, she was born a princess and became Queen of Norway in 1905. She had exemplary taste and a strong interest in fashion, and her royal lifestyle required appropriate dress for every occasion. Her wardrobe includes a range of stunning creations dating from her wedding trousseau of 1896 to the latest House of Worth designs purchased just months before her death in 1938.

August Wilhelm Boesen (Aug. 12, 1812 - 1857) was a Danish landscape painter, who trained at the Academy but never graduated. He instead traveled to Norway in the early 1840s and later to Switzerland and Italy. As many professional landscape painters he mainly lived off depictions of stately houses and mansions.

nothing is as funny as spanish or portuguese joke about "[country] NUMERO UNO CAMPION DEL MUNDO" with futbol image. you cant do it in other languages, it just doesnt hit right. well. maybe italian? yeah "campione del mondo" thats exactly the same. i was gonna make a post about how better bergen is than oslo in pretty much every way that matters but norwegian is a compound noun language and verdensmester just isnt nearly as funny

𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗬 𝗕𝗜𝗥𝗧𝗛𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞 𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗞𝗢
Who was born September 25, 1903 in Daugavpils, Latvia
I will just take a moment and use this anniversary to note that it's been a great time to celebrate Rothko, with historic retrospectives, new books, and presentations that allowed huge numbers of people to experience his work in person. This is important with all art, because as much as we may use the internet for the sensible practice of learning and discussion, technology has yet to find a worthy substitute for seeing something with your own eyes.
In Paris, Washington D.C. and Oslo, hundreds of paintings were shown to the public for the first time in decades, many for the first time ever, and that's something we can all be thankful for.
Thanks to everybody for your contributions, thoughts, and photos from these exhibits I believe these things all work together to rebloom our aesthetic perspectives.
So happy birthday to Mark Rothko, who I believe just wanted art that was personal, rich and free of empty cleverness.
May you all find the same.
For the second year in a row, Tumblr won't let me post videos I make but as a substitution I hope you enjoy these installation views of Mark Rothko: Paintings on Paper.
