you know that tumblr post that goes "I don't want my fantasy media to be realistic, I want it to be convincing"?
I think a corollary to this is I don't want my fandom experiences to be unique, I want them to be sincere
That's why I enjoy reading the same tropes over and over again. Those authors are writing those stories from a genuine love of both the tropes and the characters.
It's why I enjoy 17 gif sets about the same 3-second interaction on screen. Each one of those sets was pulled and recoloured and captioned and adjusted because each one of those gif makers wanted to capture that moment and celebrate it.
It's why every "I'm glad you enjoyed it" reply makes me smile when I get one on a comment I left. Because I know replying to comments is hard and kind of awkward, but I also know that the author really *is* glad and I'm happy that I could let me know I enjoyed their work.
I love things that are new, sure. But I also love things that have been done a million times already because I know the person doing it loves that thing too. I love the love they're showing. I love the genuine joy and celebration and community it fills me with.
I know you don't like my guts. You wouldn't want to help if I asked you a favor. But the music club is looking for a solo guitarist. And you're stopping me from joining. Right. Wait—no!

Had to share this here because you're right and you should say it. It's incredible how many people came out of the woodwork as soon as AO3 was down and suddenly had no compunctions at all about screaming how much they love and need fanfic--on the AO3 twitter. Is it so much harder to do in the comment section?
At this point I don't care anymore if people call me entitled or think I'm out of line. If fanfic is so meaningful to you that you cannot go half an hour without, let alone 24h, then you can get over yourself long enough to write a fucking comment. No excuses.
"writing comments is hard and scary" yeah well GUESS WHAT so is writing fanfics. fandom as a community is dying, because it is instead treated as a COMMODITY, a CONSUMER PRODUCT. We're not asking for much. We're asking for a CONNECTION. We don't want to sell, we want to share.
You've shown your hand. You've admitted you cannot live without us. Now ACT LIKE IT. Go write a fucking comment.
just as it is useful and important to learn to distinguish between “this media is bad” and “this media is not for me,” it is also useful and important to learn to distinguish between “this media is bad” and “this media is not precisely following the narrative i have arbitrarily constructed in my head about how it should go”
just imagining pat coming back from a tense family dinner and immediately snuggling up to pran for comfort, and when pran pretends to be annoyed at him for being clingy he mumbles "actually can you be nice to me right now?" and pran's entire demeanor changes in an INSTANT and he goes all soft and starts telling pat how good he is, and after a while pat starts getting flustered and says "okay you can be mean again now" and pran shakes his head and says "sorry sweetheart you asked for this, now you have to take it"
I hate that planned obsolescence is starting to reach fandoms. I hate that fandoms are starting to die after two, three years, I hate that whenever you stop getting content that means the fandom will die and be gone.
I need people to stop trying to brush off old interests as being 'cringe' as soon as you lose interest, or worse: make it seem like it's imoral to like something that they themselves held so dear before.
Fandoms are meant to last for years and years, the moment content stops being created is the moment we truly thrive because we keep creating the content ourselves the way we love it and expand on the things that are already there for us.
I don't care if you lost interest on something, it's fine and normal even, but stop trying to blame and make fun of people who still do love the fandom and the content and the things we can create.
having adhd and being a creator is like being on a timer. oh sorry you have this art idea? well you have approximately 12 hours to start it and 6 hours to finish the task or else you will lose interest and inevitably move on. oh you have an idea for a one-shot? well you’d better finish it in a day unless you want to banish it to your wips forever. ding dong bitch
