Lennox Community Theatre is producing my one-act play in September!!!

Labour Day 2012: I scrap the draft of the play I’ve been writing all summer and spend the weekend turning it into a tight one act comedy. It is my crowning achievement of my senior year at Rice University and is produced in 5 colleges across campus with support from the Rice Players.

Labour Day 2024: the cast & crew of this new production will be prepping for opening night. And I, a Canadian and member of the Playwrights Guild of Canada, get a bask in the glory and joy of watching this work come to life in a brand new way.

Page 2. ----- Child Emptied Cereal Into Arsenate of Lead Package ---- NAPANEE, Nov.. 30 - A breakfast cereal being presumably put in a package containing arsenate of lead resulted in Mrs. George Wheeler of Napanee and eight of her family becoming seriously ill. According to medical opinion, it was only because a very huge dose of poison was consumed that death did not occur.

Mrs. Wheeler and her eldest daughter Martha were the most seriously affected but their recovery is expected.

Mrs. Wheeler was preparing the breakfast but did not detect the arsenate of lead with the cereal and became aware of what had happened only when she investigated after sickening spells began to affect herself and family. One of the children, wanting the cereal box, had emptied the contents in the one alongside that containing the poison.

"Pleaded Guilty to Charges of Fraud," Kingston Whig-Standard. October 16, 1933. Page 9. --- (By Our Own Correspondent) NAPANEE, Oct. 16 - Milton R. Crouse, of Oshawa, a young man of very fine appearance, faced three serious charges when arraigned before Magistrate Graham in Police Court this morning. He pleaded guilty to all three charges, and was remanded until Thursday for sentence.

The charges preferred were of "unlawfully, with the intention to defraud by false pretence, by intending to have an account in the Queen and Church Street branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia at Toronto, by issuing three cheques, assuming the name of J. C. Cowan."

The accused came to Napanee on Friday last, and going to McFarland's garage, made a deal to purchase a Chevrolet coupe, 1933 model, the property of Miss Roblin, the bookkeeper. On Saturday he completed the deal by giving a cheque for $725. He also paid a visit to the Halnes's shoe store and secured a suit case, shoes, hosiery and a pair of gloves and a pair of spats and tendered a cheque for $45.20. He also issued a cheque to Robert McFarland for $20.

Later the Bank of Nova Scotia at Toronto was communicated with and it was found that the accused had no account there and that the number given on the cheques issued were for another account. There was a balance of $2,000 in the account on which the cheques had been drawn.

Questioned as to whether he had ever been convicted before on any charge, the accused refused to give any Information. He was remanded until Thursday in order to give the police an opportunity of making inquiries into his case. The prosecution was conducted by Crown Attorney Ham.

Now that I am Middle Aged(tm), many popular songs from my youth are pleasantly nostalgic, and distinctly more enjoyable than they were at the time.

Such is not the case for “Skater Boi”.

It actually sounds far, far worse than I remembered.

Like, I remember that I hated it in the summer of 2003 when I was employed in a shoe store in Canada where it would play several times a shift on Kool FM.

“Wait,” I remember thinking, “did she really just rhyme ‘skater boy’ with ‘later boy’? In the chorus? That’s like… shamefully bad…”

But what I didn’t fully appreciate at the time was that the guitar tone, and the guitar line itself, is also grating AF.

And also, like, lord Avril, women are allowed to have preferences, and like… I don’t know, hon, maybe you should interrogate why you have this weird animosity towards a woman you don’t know.

Like, what has said ‘boy’ told you about her to make you hate her, and how much of that is actually even true?

And what does he gain from you hating her?

I also do not understand why the first daughter of Napanee - who most assuredly can actually sing well* - sounds so flat and terrible on her most popular recordings.

It feels like someone in the booth must have been telling her to do it again, but worse.

* I know Ms. Lavigne can actually sing, because she once stopped in at a recording studio I used to frequent to record radio promos, and while she was there, she did an a capella version of one of her songs; the studio guy sneakily kept a copy of it, and it got passed around, and it was fucking amazing. Blew my mind.

i miss napanee
