I have a lot of really great pictures of Nanuq- in focus, good composition, etc. And I also have a lot of pretty bad pictures of Nanuq- and in a lot of them he's the happiest he could be. And i really miss him a lot, so here- some terrible photos of my excellent dog.

An Baby, extremely suspicious of the incoming tide, and Yearling's First Harness time. The one and only time his reaction to that harness was bored befuddlement and not 'instant joyful zoomies.'

Still mostly baby, refusing to get out of the driver's seat of the car because this is where the Snow is and this is where the Bacon Lady is and we can't leave yet.

Self-explanatory

A park saga of finding a delicious grody tennis ball, becoming a husky vortex of murdergrowlraarg, and then realizing it's california and sunny and it's hot so now it's time to de-vortex and just lay down and snap lazily at each other. (white is Sasha, black is Mishka; the dog park quickly learned what Husky Hour really meant and either adapted to a background noise of murder or avoided the park around sundown)

And finally, his favoritest thing ever: mud and stormy weather and nyoom. That estuary muck took like four rounds of scrubbing, and he was the saddest wet beaft in existence during that process. He had that sproingy wooly husky fur that traps the smallest bits of grit and particulates but loooved mud puddles and smushy grass and lakeshore/bayshore shenanigans.

He was ours and we loved him.

[ STARRING: MARS & NANUQ ; RANDOM CANONS #1 ]

[ ⋆｡° CHARACTERS DURATION: from season one right until the final season ; they will remain a constant for JESSI's character, just as they have always been a constant throughout her life prior to her rebirthing. ]

mars & nanuq grew up on the streets of new york   ;  holed up in an abandoned section of the subway tunnels,  where they - along with nanuq's mom, lucia & other families - lived up until the events of synthized season one.

while nanuq was born in this abandoned subway section, mars stumbled across his soon-to-be home after running away from his abusive mother & father **, aged six. he was taken under the wing of lucia instantly, whose self-taught skills included nursing & first aid. mars & nanuq had a bond soon after - playing on dead train-tracks & getting up to mischief - that could not, & will not be broken.

** it should be noted that mars didn't just run away from his family home, but burned it to the ground with his sleeping parents inside. he doesn't know, or even care whether his folks are dead or alive ; he is just glad to be away from them. even at age six, revenge and resentment fuelled him. perhaps rightfully so considering the bruises and fractures throughout his body. cigarette burns & malnourishment etc that thankfully, lucia was able to mend. ( unable to fix mental scars though - )

when mars met nanuq, nanuq was born female but was always against this, & experienced extreme body dysmorphia & severe depression especially as his body began to reach puberty. when nanuq had turned thirteen & with mars' persuasion, one broken beer bottle in the subway, an exposed chest & a lot of blood later ?? mars stitching up the open wounds with sketchy needle & thread ( & with lucia eventually realizing what had happened - ) the brutal surgery was complete & proved more than enough for nanuq to experience freedom again. his true self. over the years, nanuq and mars would begin stealing drugs from the nearby pharmacies including testosterone, so that nanuq could fully become the man he knew he was from the very beginning. this was the point that mars & nanuq realized they had fallen in love with each other, while the three words didn't need to be said, & has hardly been said for decades, rough intimacy & eternal loyalty showed their love in the only way they needed.

consider themselves 'married' for over two decades, even though no official ceremony has taken place, nor do they wear rings.

best friends to jessi for almost two decades before the events of season one. they met jessi by chance, when she too, ran away from home briefly after an altercation with her father - when she was eleven years old. stumbling into an alleyway and finding herself lost, not knowing which way was back home, teenagers mars & nanuq found her on an adventure to steal food. jessi joined them & the smile on her face had never been so wide, happy, joyous before this moment. acts of rebellion with people that she trusted, that she could never experience in her own home.

while mars & nanuq tried to get jessi to live with them, she found herself returning home to an unhealthy household due to love for her family that she couldn't escape from. though jessi would often sneak out, or run away constantly, in order to spend time with the best friends that made her feel so alive. this turned into a role reversal, when jessi was old enough to finally get her own apartment in battery park, & asked mars / nanuq to live with her. they took one look around the apartment & knew they could never live in domestication like that. they were born feral, stray dogs, & that's how they wanted to stay.

mars and nanuq since the moment they met jessi, have treated her as if she were their sibling. there is nothing that they wouldn't do for her - no matter how gruesome or illegal. their loyalty runs deep and they feel lucky and blessed to consider her not only their best friend, but their actual sister. when nanuq's mom eventually passed away, jessi was happy to be there as a comforting support which only strengthened their bond tighter.

one of jessi's favorite things was to spend time with nanuq in one of the abandoned church's on the edge of town, at night while mars went to steal from beers and cigarettes that they could enjoy afterwards. drinking, smoking and talking on top of a hill on the outskirts, looking over the city until dawn.

when jessi ''dies'' and undergoes a rebirthing from luan in season one, new york instantly turns nuclear, there is nothing but radiated atoms yet mars & nanuq emerge from the wreckage without a scratch. they are the only survivors of new york's destruction.

it doesn't come without consequences however, instantly feeling something within them that they can't describe. a power that yearns for blood. revenge. rebirthing powers of their own. & the feeling that jessi isn't one of the corpses among the fallen, but is actually somewhere, somehow. hurt, wounded, scared, and needing mars / nanuq to take care of her.

this becomes more set in truth, when nanuq sleeps and dreams about jessi in real visions, seeing her running from 'the corruption' in places unknown. mars does not share these visions, yet this only drives their mission harder throughout season one: find jessi, no matter what the cost.

while they have always been insanely aggressive and violent, perhaps in order to cope with their trauma / or whatever nasties are coded within their DNA - and this only becomes worse with their rebirthing effects - they are also extremely loyal. if you prove yourself an ally to them, they won't hesitate to protect you, even at the cost of their own life. there is a love within them that extends to whoever wants it, thanks to the guidance given by nanuq's mom & the catholic ideals that nanuq prides himself on believing - no matter how much they 'sin', no matter how much he proves himself to be 'against God.'

rebirth powers: feed into their already feral nature. can lose limbs and will grow back over quick time ( or if they have the discarded limb, nothing some duct tape and 24 hrs won't fix, in order to make the limb work as good as new again ) ; no feeling towards pain ; cannibalistic tendencies / the need for blood and flesh in order to survive. while normal food is edible, it doesn't satisfy the hunger. visions of jessi that almost act like a tracking system, like a sniffer dog on a scented trail -
