Do you like angel the series?

OKAY SO. i know i'm a buffy blog but i hardly ever talk about ats. the thing is. the version of ats that lives in my head is better than the actual show. i like the show but imo it makes multiple missteps that really limit my enjoyment of it. this spiralled as i wrote the answer, so please enjoy my ats sermon.

missteps:

sticks to monster-of-the-week format too much, which isn't a bad thing in theory, but the ats motw are just not very memorable

makes bad decisions for good characters. we all know the writing choices for cordelia were insane, but gunn is one of my favourites and it's so clear the writers hardly ever know what to do with him. and they butcher fred / gunn which i thought worked really well for both their characters.

leaning on broody angel too often. i really like the dorky, more relaxed angel we get in ats. and i really like angelus. but the midpoint where angel is souled but darker is not that fun for me personally and i think they go that way too often.

cordelia being half-demon just being dropped. great potential, never explored.

season 4 in general. some fantastic ideas and a few great moments, but overall this is the season i have the most problems with. i actually really like the beast and jasmine as a concept but i think the severe mishandling of cordelia brings down the season to an extent i don't think the writers expected.

angel / cordelia. comes back to mishandling of cordelia in general. angel and cordelia were a really solid dynamic and when the show loses that you can feel something's missing. they try to fill the gaps with fred and wesley/gunn but it never quite lands.

BUT there are things i think are really good about the show too!

the main cast. while i don't like specific storylines involving some characters, the main cast and their chemistry are really strong. The show is at its high point in my opinion at season 3 when the dynamic of Angel, Cordelia, Fred, Gunn, Wesley is really solid.

this one might be a surprise. connor. i really think connor is super overly hated by fans, because his storyline is one of the best in the show.

wesley betraying the team. what a fantastic storyline for a character i didn't really like until that point. and we get more lilah.

it does fun episodes really well. the puppet episode, the one where they revert back to 16, etc. the cast have good chemistry and it's nice to see them flex their comedic ability more.

darla and drusilla being big bads. darla's storyline in general actually i really like.

that episode with fred against jasmine's acolytes.

finales. good finales throughout.

the rewrites in my head.

illyria came in a little too late to be truly effective for me, i wish she would've been the villain in s4 instead of jasmine. you wouldn't have to even change too many details. (and i think amy acker is better at playing evil than charisma)

faith should have been in it more. this one is so biased because i love faith, but i think if she had been around earlier in season four it would have given us a really solid insight into her state of mind post-prison, and more of a st up for buffy s7. i also think she just works so well on ats with the themes of redemption.

general thoughts

unfortunately ats has the constant shadow of btvs over it. i think if btvs didn't exist it would be one of my favourite shows but you can't help but compare them in your head and buffy just has stronger writing and crafting overall. it's a good show with a great cast and some incredible story moments, but spends too much time bogged down with forgettable one-offs, and character decisions that either don't make sense or aren't explored in a satisfying way.

don't talk to me about buffy summers. she didn't come back wrong. she wishes desperately she came back wrong. she's sure she did, because she feels wrong and if it wasn't her dying and it wasn't her being dragged kicking and screaming back to the land of the living and it wasn't her clawing out of her own grave only to have to do it all again then it's just her. it's just that buffy's wrong. she's irreperably broken and all death did was stop her from being able to hide it.
