Hanako with her owner, Dr. Komei Koshihara
Hanako ("flower girl") was a remarkable koi fish that lived for 226 years.
In 1966, Professor Masayoshi Hiro from Nagoya Women’s University's Laboratory of Animal Science dedicated two months to meticulously ascertain Hanako's age.
Like the method of counting rings in tree trunks to determine a tree's age, a fish's age is deduced by counting the rings on its scales.
These rings, discernible only under a microscope by an expert, reflect the seasonal variations experienced by the fish.
A broader ring indicates the summer season, when a fish typically consumes more food and experiences accelerated growth.
Conversely, a narrower ring suggests the winter months, marked by a slower metabolism in the fish.
Through this technique, Hanako was determined to have been born approximately in 1751 and lived until 7 July 1977.
Remarkably, upon examination of the other koi fish sharing the same pond with Hanako, it was found that they too were all centenarians, with each surpassing 100 years of age.
Her owner, Dr. Komei Koshihara, called her “his dearest friend.”
Hanako has the unbeaten title of longest lived freshwater fish in recorded history.
She lived through two world wars and nine (9) different Emperors of Japan.

A type of bacteria commonly found in human oral and gut flora could play a major role in the development of endometriosis, scientists have discovered – potentially giving us crucial insight into the development of the painful condition, and opening up new ways to treat it. That would mean fresh hope for the millions of women living with the debilitating effects of endometriosis. The condition can lead to heavy periods, difficulty getting pregnant, and prolonged periods of pain, and experts aren't sure what causes it, though they have a few ideas. In a new study, a team of researchers from Nagoya University and other institutions in Japan looked at tissue samples from 79 women with endometriosis and 76 healthy women, finding a strong correlation between Fusobacterium and the disease. Endometriosis occurs when cells similar to those in the endometrium – the layer of tissue covering the inside of the uterus – start growing in other areas, like the ovaries and fallopian tubes. It's in the endometrium where the bacteria was found. "In a cohort of women, 64 percent of patients with endometriosis but less than 10 percent of [healthy] controls were found to have Fusobacterium infiltration in the endometrium," write the researchers in their published paper.

New insights into the long-term effects of antenatal corticosteroids on brain development
Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) are an established therapy for pregnant women at risk of preterm birth to help mature the fetus’s lungs and reduce the chances of serious health issues. However, researchers at Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine have found evidence that babies treated with ACS have smaller volumes of two key brain areas, the bilateral amygdalae and caudate nuclei, which…

Who will replace Kishida to become Japan’s new PM?
Japan’s ruling political party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), votes for its next leader on Friday, it will effectively be choosing the country’s next prime minister, Time reports.
During the tenure of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who announced in August that he would step down after taking power in 2021, there have been a string of scandals. From his son throwing a party at his official residence to alleged irregularities in fundraising by party members, the scandals, in addition to failed economic reforms, have eroded the LDP’s popularity and forced a reset.
A record nine lawmakers are running in the intra-party election, vying for majority support among 368 members of parliament and 368 representatives of the party’s more than one million dues-paying rank-and-file members. Most candidates, according to AP, have vowed to demand a general election, not due until October 2025, shortly after they are elevated in the party to try to capitalise on their new image.
The key issue at stake for the LDP is regaining public confidence. Many observers note that this change could come about through the LDP’s first female president in its history. Two of the nine candidates, including one of the three main contenders, are women. Japan is the only G7 country other than the US that has never had a woman head of government, and some party members say such a move could greatly improve its image.
But experts tell TIME that despite the momentum and opportunity, the party is unlikely to choose a female leader, citing its patriarchal history, domestic politics and lack of political competition.
Women among Japan’s ministerial candidates
Among the women nominated for the Sept. 27 LDP chairwoman election is Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi, 63, a veteran LDP politician who has been compared to Margaret Thatcher in Britain. Takaichi ran in 2021 with the support of the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and came in third. According to a Kyodo News poll, LDP supporters favor her as Japan’s next prime minister.
There is also incumbent Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, 71, whom party vice president and former Prime Minister Taro Aso, a self-proclaimed “kingmaker,” called a “rising star.”
A Pew Research Center poll earlier this year found that Japan has a high proportion of citizens who “believe that men and women are generally equally good as leaders.” But the LDP cares little about public opinion, at least in the context of women’s representation. “For the LDP, domestic politics is the most important issue,” Mikiko Eto, professor emeritus of gender and politics at Hosei University in Tokyo, told TIME, adding that for the LDP, women are used mainly as tokens. In 2021, the LDP leadership called for female party members to attend key meetings in the wake of sexist remarks by the former prime minister, but it turned out that women were only allowed to observe but not speak.
Hiroko Takeda, a political science lecturer at Nagoya University Graduate School of Law, said the LDP has become a “separate universe” in Japan. LDP members treat parliamentary office as a household or family business that is “inherited,” Takeda says, so it is difficult for newcomers to politics, especially women, to get into key positions.
The current ministers are in the race too
Although opposition parties are putting women in leadership positions, Emma Dalton, a senior lecturer in Japanese studies at La Trobe University in Australia, says they are too weak to increase pressure on the LDP to demand greater inclusiveness. “The LDP has a bit of a problem, and I think they realise that. But at the same time, the Japanese public, I think, is just looking around and saying, ‘Well, where is the realistic opposition?’”
Other frontrunners in the LDP presidential election include former defense minister and LDP veteran Shigeru Ishiba, 67, who is running for the fifth time. Another favorite is Shinjiro Koizumi, the 43-year-old son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. Shinjiro Koizumi, who is more than a decade younger than the average Japanese lawmaker, will also offer striking changes for the LDP, which has struggled to woo young voters. Also running is Taro Kono, the current minister of digital technology, who previously ran for party chief in 2021 and lost to Kishida in the second round.
Nevertheless, it is possible that one of the female candidates will win Friday’s election, which is expected to move to a runoff. But while a victory by either would be a feat for Japan on the international stage, it would not necessarily signal a change in the LDP’s attitude toward women. This from Hosei University predicts that while Kamikawa may steer the LDP in a more women-friendly direction, “she will not act on her campaign promises because of political conventions and customs within the party.” As for the more conservative Takaichi, “she behaves like a man,” Eto says, “often hostile to feminist issues or gender concerns.”

Born in Tokyo in 1886, the second daughter of a high ranking civil servant, and educated at Japan Women's University, Hiratsuka came to be influenced by contemporary currents of European philosophy, as well as Zen Buddhism, of which she would become a devoted practitioner. Of particular influence to her was Swedish feminist writer Ellen Key, some of whose works she translated into Japanese, and the individualistic heroine of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House. In 1908 she attempted a double-suicide with Morita Sohei, her married teacher, in the mountains of Nasushiobara, Tochigi. The pair were found alive on the mountain, but the attempted suicide by such a highly educated pair aroused widespread public criticism.
Upon graduation from university, Hiratsuka entered the Narumi Women's English School, where, in 1911, she founded Japan's first all-women literary magazine, Seito. She began the first issue with the words, "In the beginning, woman was the sun" - a reference to the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu, legendary ancestress of the Imperial House of Japan, and to the spiritual independence which women had lost. Adopting the pen name Raicho (Thunderbird), she began to call for a women's spiritual revolution, and within its first few years the journal's focus shifted from literature to women's issues, including candid discussion of female sexuality, chastity, and adoption.
Her April 1913 essay, "To the Women of the World" rejected the conventional role of women as ryosai kenbo (good wife and wise mother). This nonconformism pitted Seito not only against society but also the state, contributing to the censorship of women's magazines that disturbed public order or introduced Western ideas about women incompatible with Japan. The journal folded in 1915, but not before establishing its founder as a leading light in Japan's women's movement. Meanwhile, Hiratsuka had begun living openly with her younger lover, artist Okumura Hiroshi, with whom she had two children out of wedlock but eventually married in 1941.
From 1920, following an investigation into female workers' conditions in textile factories in Nagoya, Hiratsuka founded the New Women's Association together with activist Ichikawa Fusae. It was largely through this group's efforts that a regulation in which women had been barred from joining political organizations was overturned in 1922.
Women's suffrage, however, remained elusive in Japan. A more controversial campaign attempted to ban men with venereal disease from marrying. This unsuccessful campaign remains a point of controversy surrounding Hiratsuka's career in that it saw her aligning herself with the eugenics movement, asserting that the spread of V.D. was having a detrimental effect on the Japanese race.

Seitō founder, Raichō Hiratsuka, in 1911.   Raicho and friends started Seito magazine in Japan it in order to feature women’s writing for a female audience—in Japan, in 1911, it was daring for a woman to put her name in print on anything besides a pretty poem. The magazine’s name, Seitō, translated to “Bluestockings,” a nod to an unorthodox group of 18th-century English women who gathered to discuss politics and art.

The September issue of 25ans magazine has a short article detailing Eiji, which was written by a screenwriter named Mihoko Yamada.

Beautiful People Collection The reason why that person in season is wonderful ikemen
Mihoko Yamada Essay This month's person Eiji Akaso When the intellectual "seasonal actor" who has a high elegance and affinity is on the cover, it moves That's right. "Said by a female editor of a weekly magazine. "Moving" means that the number of copies is sold out and the sales increase.
"He" is Eiji Akaso, the "seasonal actor" who won first place in the "20s actor soaring ranking" of the "Talent Power Ranking" in August and November 2021. he looks young because he has a baby face, but he is 28 years old.
His name spread to young people in the drama "Cheri Maho","It seems that you can become a witch if you are a virgin until the age of 30" (TV Tokyo series). In Wich starred for the first time alone ,It seems that it was "SUPER RICH (Fuji TV series)" were he played the role of Noriko Eguchi's husband that was "discovered" by the adult women in Japan. Eguchi who played the executive career woman was straight with clear eyes. Mr. Akaso, who is a super young husband who supports with such thoughts and played a business partner. I am not the only one who inflated my delusion how wonderful it would be if such a man supported me both publicly and privately.
In order to unravel the "beautiful person" with Elegance and affinity by 25ans magazine of this month I dig in
Mr. Akaso, the familiar "Elementary school town" in Nagoya" will be the most important. After all, Mr. Akaso was born in Osaka prefecture and is from Aichi prefecture. Because was a member of idol group of "IKEMEN ☆ NAGOYA". As a member of a local male idol group that will be renamed to "BOYS AND MEN" later, Eiji Akaso has appeared in stage performances and variety shows in the three Tokai prefectures since his teens. There is a "past" that was willing to respond to the "much swing" unique to local stations.
With such a flow, the roots are gradually known, but the most famous is that the father is a linguist (English studies), and now the president of Nagoya Gakuin University, it must be Mr. Haruyuki Akaso.
Akaso Eiji San says he has taken a lecture from his father because he is from the same university. "I spent my father's job in Wisconsin, USA until I was three years old." "When I was two or three years old, I was taken to an overseas academic conference," he said in an interview. That's why Twitter is flooded with English sentences and fans from overseas sometimes send comments in English. And my mother is a piano teacher. Akaso san, who learned the piano from the age of 3 to junior high school and was entrusted with the accompaniment in the chorus contest when he was in elementary school, is definitely a thoroughbred and can be said to be the most handsome guy who has a high affinity with the Elegance group of "25ans" readers. Probably.
After winning the Grand Prix at Samantha Thavasa's "Men's Model Audition" in 2013, he has belonged to the same office as Shun Oguri, Kei Tanaka, Shotaro Mamiya, Kentaro Sakaguchi, and younger people. It continues to the present as the first. I often hide my eyebrows with mashed hair, but the points are the thick and powerful "male eyebrows" and the eyes that tend to have brown/honey colored big eyes. The shape of the chin is also popular as "sexy". Eiji Akaso is appearing in July with Kasumi Arimura and Tomoya Nakamura in the role of a clumsy, serious and kind-hearted young man in "Ishiko and Haneo.
Let's enjoy the latest ikemen together!

Fujita Fumio 藤田不美夫 (b. 1933).Born in Handa City, Aichi Prefecture, about 40km due south of Nagoya, no information is available on Fujita Fumio’s early life other than the artist’s own words from a 2005 interview in commenting on his nickname “Forest Painter“: “Since I was child, my places to play were forests... I want you to see the charm of those forests.”
We know that he graduated from the department of oil painting at Musashino Art School (Musashino bijutsu Gakko) in 1956 where he also trained as a teacher, and began work as a graphic designer in 1958 at the age of 25 in Tokyo, a job he did for around seven years. He moved to Atsugi, west of Tokyo, in about 1963 and at about this time began making sosaku hanga (creative woodblock prints), exhibiting at various venues including the Japan Print Association Exhibition. In Atsugi he joined the Rainbow Association 虹の会, known for their life drawing sessions featuring nude women models.
At about this time he also became the resident woodblock artist at a leading Ginza art gallery. In later years his work was exhibited at various galleries, including the Kanai Gallery, Tokyo, department stores and at Musashino Art University, including a 1980 exhibition of woodblock prints at the school. He exhibited for at least one year, in 1989, at the CWAJ print show.Over the years, he became best known for his landscapes of forest scenes, often with other pictorial elements, but his work also encompass the purely abstract and combinations of abstract organic shapes with representational forms.  Birds and horses frequently appear in his work.  In 1987 he became a full-time lecturer at the Odakyu Culture School department of woodblock printing.
Fujita has been an independent artist, not associated with any artistic movement.  He enjoys his indendence saying “I've been doing whatever I like and do not belong to any organization. If I keep health I will just continue to draw what I want.”Fujita’s Facebook page “Gallery Fumio Fujita” can be found at https://www.facebook.com/f.fujita421/. I, myself, strongly dislike when moments such as these are used for gags and wish they were done to show the extent of Izuku’s suffering—mentally, emotionally, physically, socially—and that he never deserved the terrible treatment he experienced growing now (and now). And the fact that there are fans who say the development he got, is being able to talk to women without blushing or something else, definitely not a good or great thing.
What was Horikoshi even thinking? It’s as though there was and is a lack of love and passion and care and thought going into the series. As (only speaking for myself when I say this) an online roleplayer, original character creator, and a daily researcher and analyzer (I have a post that explains this; "Izuku Midoriya & Analysis"), Horikoshi needs to put more of all four of these. There are My Hero Academia fanfictions where more love, passion, care, and thought had been/are put into them, and do better for the characters (part of why I even bookmark these particular fanfictions I find and read; they can also be excellent to use as inspiration, inspiration from different scenes and moments to create something even more beautiful), which is far more than what Horikoshi's and his editor have put in (and there are other manga authors who have done better; Beastars is one I view highly of; I also adore the author, of course). Horikoshi graduated from “Nagoya University of Arts” and was a former assistant for Yasuki Tanaka, making him one of the many artists who studied at an art school and started out as an assistant. And does have an editor, but he’s switched editors on multiple occasions and I do question why and what they were/are like when working with him, especially since the editor is considered the boss of a manga artist and supervises series production (“The editor gives advice on the layout and art of the manga, vets the story direction and pace, ensures that deadlines are met, and generally makes sure that the manga stays up to company standards.”).
As for Ochako: Considering her backstory, the way she reacted to Bakugo being violent towards Izuku and calling him deku (especially after learning it is an insult by Izuku himself), it appears very out of character for her. I also dislike that a lot of her blunt moments usually come off as passive aggressive or mean spirited. The more I learn about Japan, the more my understanding of various characters improves. Though it also raises questions, like how someone hasn’t pointed out how her bluntness could be coming off to others, especially with the fact she wants to become a Pro-Hero.

As much I don't like Ochako, I dont judge her too harsh here. Deku and Dekiru sound similar where she comes from- as I have been told- which ok fair. Some regions in my country can have the same word and two different meanings.
I do side eye her for how she is calling him deku right away...when BK tried to kill him. Guys, his quirk is explosion...and he was aiming at Izu in the test - some would weakly say "he wasnt thinking in killing" which I digress. He was thinking in causing harm to Izu for no reason- and on the exercise (yes, that scene happened before Ochako says deku I think)
And I dont get why Izu would be ok in accept this name. Is bc Ochako is a girl? What if Iida said the same thing?
The scene is iffy to me...Izu should hate the name and wants distance and ...even if Nejire, the prettiest girl of UA, calls him as such using Ochako's words...Izu should have said no. "No. Dont call me that"
But one thing here...why Izu reacts this way to anyone giving a crumble of attention? Legit, all those gag moments make me think of bad scenarios....did the girls ignored him? Was he too afraid to talk to one? @doodlegirl1998 mentioned once how BK could have asked for girls's help to bully Izu...its possible but at the same time...BK is possessive in the sense "only I can abuse Izu"
Sorry I'm ranting here. I legit dont get why Izu acts this way. Ochako IS a stranger to him at this point- still is through- and Izu acts in a lovely dovey mode...blushing and being marvelled a person is talking to him.....dude if this was a shoujo written by someone not Hori (aka competent) this would mean smth...
Here it just feel its mocking Izu. And it gives me the idea no one talked to him in Aldera aside bk ...with his abuse. Which makes sense within cursed canon and god...makes me wonder if bk isolated him for the abuse and if so...why and when? Its scary imaging a 10 years old kid systematically abusing someone like this and knowing what they are doing.
"He is a kid. He didnt know any better"
Nah. He knew and did anyway. Actually, continues to do so.

After Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Tragedy and Humiliation.
U.S. and Australian brutalisation of women on the Japanese mainland (Excerpt From Pages 66-69)
All References Are Provided in the Book Itself
“There was a far darker side to the U.S. and allied occupation of Japan, one which is little mentioned in the vast majority of histories – American or otherwise. When Japan surrendered in August 1945, mass rapes by occupying forces were expected… [despite setting up of a comfort women which recruited or otherwise trafficked desperate women to brothels] such crimes were still common and several of them were extremely brutal and resulted in the deaths of the victims. Political science professor Eiji Takemae wrote regard- ing the conduct of American soldiers occupying Japan:
‘U.S. troops comported themselves like conquerors, especially in the early weeks and months of occupation. Misbehavior ranged from black-marketeering, petty theft, reckless driving and disorderly conduct to vandalism, assault, arson, murder and rape. Much of the violence was directed against women, the first attacks beginning within hours after the landing of advanced units. In Yokohama, China and elsewhere, soldiers and sailors broke the law with impunity, and incidents of robbery, rape and occasionally murder were widely reported in the press [which had not yet been censored by the U.S. military government]. When U.S. paratroopers landed in Sapporo an orgy of looting, sexual violence and drunken brawling ensued. Gang rapes and other sex atrocities were not infrequent [...] Military courts arrested relatively few soldiers for their offences and convicted even fewer, and restitution for the victims was rare. Japanese attempts at self-defense were punished severely. In the sole instance of self-help that General Eichberger records in his memoirs, when local residents formed a vigilante group and retaliated against off-duty GIs, the Eighth Army ordered armored vehicles in battle array into the streets and arrested the ringleaders, who received lengthy prison terms.’
The U.S. and Australian militaries did not maintain rule of law when it came to violations of Japanese women by their own forces, neither were the Japanese population allowed to do so themselves. Occupation forces could loot and rape as they pleased and were effectively above the law.
An example of such an incident was in April 1946, when approximately U.S. personnel in three trucks attacked the Nakamura Hospital in Omori district. The soldiers raped over 40 patients and 37 female staff. One woman who had given birth just two days prior had her child thrown on the floor and killed, and she was then raped as well. Male patients trying to protect the women were also killed. The following week several dozen U.S. military personnel cut the phone lines to a housing block in Nagoya and raped all the women they could capture there – including girls as young as ten years old and women as old as fifty-five.
Such behavior was far from unique to American soldiers. Australian forces conducted themselves in much the same way during their own deployment in Japan. As one Japanese witness testified: ‘As soon as Australian troops arrived in Kure in early 1946, they ‘dragged young women into their jeeps, took them to the mountain, and then raped them. I heard them screaming for help nearly every night.’ Such behavior was commonplace, but news of criminal activity by Occupation forces was quickly suppressed.
Australian officer Allan Clifton recalled his own experience of the sexual violence committed in Japan:
‘I stood beside a bed in hospital. On it lay a girl, unconscious, her long, black hair in wild tumult on the pillow. A doctor and two nurses were working to revive her. An hour before she had been raped by twenty soldiers. We found her where they had left her, on a piece of waste land. The hospital was in Hiroshima. The girl was Japanese. The soldiers were Australians. The moaning and wailing had ceased and she was quiet now. The tortured tension on her face had slipped away, and the soft brown skin was smooth and unwrinkled, stained with tears like the face of a child that has cried herself to sleep.’
Australians committing such crimes in Japan were, when discovered, given very minor sentences. Even these were most often later mitigated or quashed by Australian courts. Clifton recounted one such event himself, when an Australian court quashed a sentence given by a military court martial citing ‘insufficient evidence,’ despite the incident having several witnesses. It was clear that courts overseeing Western occupation forces took measures to protect their own from crimes committed against the Japanese – crimes which were largely regarded as just access to ‘spoils of war’ at the time by the Western occupiers.
As had been the case during the war, underreporting of rapes in peace- time due to the associated shame in a traditional society and inaction on the part of authorities (rapes in both cases occurred when Western militaries were themselves in power) would lower the figures significantly. In order to prevent ill feeling towards their occupation from increasing, the United States military government implemented very strict censorship of the media. Mention of crimes committed by Western military personnel against Japanese civilians was strictly forbidden. The occupying forces ‘issued press and pre-censorship codes outlawing the publication of all reports and statistics “inimical to the objectives of the Occupation.”’ When a few weeks into the occupation Japanese press mentioned the rape and widespread looting by American soldiers, the occupying forces quickly responded by censoring all media and imposing a zero tolerance policy against the reporting of such crimes. It was not only the crimes committed by Western forces, but any criticism of the Western allied powers whatsoever which was strictly forbidden during the occupation period – for over six years. This left the U.S. military government, the supreme authority in the country, beyond accountability. Topics such as the establishment of comfort stations and encouragement of vulnerable women into the sex trade, critical analysis of the black market, the population’s starvation level calorie intakes and even references to the Great Depression’s impact on Western economies, anti-colonialism, pan-Asianism and emerging Cold War tensions were all off limits.
What was particularly notable about the censorship imposed under American occupation was that it was intended to conceal its own existence. This meant that not only were certain subjects strictly off limits, but the mention of censorship was also forbidden. As Columbia University Professor Donald Keene noted: ‘the Occupation censorship was even more exasperating than Japanese military censorship had been because it insisted that all traces of censorship be concealed. This meant that articles had to be rewritten in full, rather than merely submitting XXs for the offending phrases.’ For the U.S. military government it was essential not only to control information – but also to give the illusion of a free press when the press was in fact more restricted than it had been even in wartime under imperial rule.
By going one step further to censor even the mention of censorship itself, the United States could claim to stand for freedom of press and freedom of expression. By controlling the media the American military government could attempt to foster goodwill among the Japanese people while making crimes committed by their personnel and those of their allies appear as isolated incidents. While the brutality of American and Australian militaries against Japanese civilians was evident during the war and in its immediate aftermath, it did not end with occupation. The United States has maintained a significant military presence in Japan ever since and crimes including sexual violence and murder against Japanese civilians continue to occur.”

NOTES:
Taken from Wikipedia, the Bodh Gaya is ‘a religious site and place of pilgrimage associated with the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Gaya district in the Indian state of Bihar’.
An ‘agoashi fee’ is actually a shortened version of a longer concept - ago-ashi-makura, which is terminology used in the Japanese entertainment industry to refer to the costs of meals, transportation and accomodation respectively. “Ago = chin/jaw = food”, “ashi = reeds = travel”, “makura = pillow = place to rest”. Essentially, Kuuko is saying you’ll be charged for meals and transportation.
Not gonna lie this confused me a lot, but “throwing aside” seems to refer to not finishing something you’ve started.
Kuuko uses the term ‘risemara’ here, which is gaming slang for repeatedly restarting the beginning of a video game in order to get a specific character or item.
He also uses the word ‘upaya’ here, a term used in Buddhism to describe potentially unorthodox methods of teaching that can still bring one closer to Enlightenment.
Nagoya is the capital of Aichi prefecture. In general, Kuuko’s verse seems to be a criticism of “commercialised” Buddhism, but it could be that I’ve translated it wrong hrjghjr
This is a Kansai dialect phrase.
The word used for “unkind” here is also dialect.
The old name for Osaka, as well as one of it’s wards.
So this is pretty funny; instead of his usual ‘arehen’ Sasara actually uses the Kanto dialect form of “isn’t it?” in order to mock people who speak like that.
“Position talk”, or an opinion. Hitoya’s basically claiming laws are bendable depending on how you see them.
Chicken = are you a coward? Beef = are you going to fight?

🔴 Ecocide Alert in Nagorno–Kharabakh region amidst war between Armenia & Azerbaijan
Dear Partner,
As you may be aware, on September 27th, 2020, full–blown war exploded between Armenia & Azerbaijan over Naghorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) with four ceasefire regimes negotiated under the umbrella of Minsk OSCE Group, violated during October, 2020.
During this large-scale war, the most intensive since the 1994 ceasefire agreement in the Southern Caucasus region, a number of war crimes were mounted & documented, among them beheadings of Armenian soldiers, killing of civilians in a city square wrapped in Armenian flags, deliberate attacks on
civilian infrastructures - residential buildings, churches, food markets, schools and maternity hospitals.
On October 30, 2020, the environmental community of Armenia, including local, regional & international environmental organizations, conservation pioneers, scientists and non-governmental organizations, was shocked to witness another disastrous war crime against natural ecosystems & crucial livelihoods of Artsakh.
As per credible reports & collected data, comprised by Human’s Right Defender of Armenia, Azerbaijani military forces have used white phosphorus munitions containing elements of chemical weapons in the primary forests of Artsakh, which is a gross violation of International Humanitarian Law, principles of Customary Law, Geneva Convention, Chemical Weapons Convention, Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Technique, as well as the provisions of the relevant UN conventions and documents. As video evidence shows, these weapons are being used in an
attempt to burn down forests where-civilians are taking shelter from Azerbaijan’s attacks.
The ongoing large-scale war seriously threatens the biodiversity of the region, which has been recognized
as one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. This region is well-known for its high rate of endemism and for being home to more than 6000 plant species, 153 species of mammals, 400 species of birds and other living organisms. Hundreds of plant and animal species found in Artsakh are listed both in the local Red Book and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species having a protection status at a global level.
Among them are the critically endangered Persian (Caucasian) Leopard, known to migrate through Mrav ridge of Armenia & Artsakh towards the Iranian border, as well as to Azerbaijan and vice versa, which is a rare species with declining numbers protected at a regional & global level.
Furthermore, Armenia & Artsakh are known for their primary forests, which are amongst the most biodiverse forests in the region. Not only do these forests play a major role in preserving favorable environmental conditions for sustainable development, but local people are heavily dependent on these forests for their livelihoods. Traditional forest-related knowledge accumulated over thousands of years is deeply linked with the cultures of indigenous people living in Artsakh.
The usage of white phosphorus munitions by Azerbaijani forces in those forests will not only destroy valuable ecosystems & habitats and put threatened species at the risk of extinction, but will contaminate rivers & underground waters for years, thus turning into a major threat of regional scale for all the people and wildlife living in the region.
We are therefore calling out to the global conservation community for support to help stop the usage of white phosphorus munitions before they cause an environmental disaster and regional ecocide.
The usage of white phosphorus munitions contradicts to all the provisions of all environmental conventions including the Bern Convention, Nagoya protocol to Helsinki & Rotterdam conventions, verified by the Governments of both Armenia & Azerbaijan.
Although 98% of the global population live under the protection of the Chemical Weapons Convention, this
is, as we understand, unfortunately not applicable towards Armenia & ethnic Armenians living in Artsakh.
Ongoing developments continue to threaten any form of life in the region and thus we’re addressing you, as a leading environmental organization in the field, to:
● Write to appropriate contacts & conservation partners in your network to express your concern of the possible environmental destruction in Artsakh and the region
● Raise awareness within your networks/social channels and:
● Condemn the actions of any military force that uses white phosphorus munitions in forests & habitats destroying crucial ecosystems and therefore forbidden under international law.
● Call for responsibility to protect valuable ecosystems, species populations & genetic resources from ecocide in Artsakh.
● Call for moral responsibility in a time of war and exclude war crimes both against humans and nature.
Please kindly inform us, the undersigned, about actions undertaken by your organization advocating for sustainable development & environmental resilience, and further steps aimed at eliminating the risk of the ecocide in Artsakh region, which is a crucial habitat to threatened species & populations not recognizing political borders and/or regional disputes.

Went to my first Sound! Euphonium event today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I grabbed a last minute ticket for a greeting show in Nagoya for the Sound! Euphonium movie Chikai no Finale. The voice actresses for Kumiko, Hazuki, Midori, and Reina were there + the director.
They talked for a good while, but sadly I don’t remember that much of what they said. It was before the movie so they couldn’t mention spoilers. They mostly talked about how their characters dealt with becoming upperclassmen, while ending each sentence with the cutest “maru!” (period!) possible. (Including the director.) Kumiko’s voice actress talked about how her Dad saw the movie and said she was just like Kumiko based on one little scene where Kumiko is sitting weird on a park bench haha.
But yeah, although the opportunity to go to the greeting show was great, I spent a lot of the time I was there thinking about... something else.
So when I was heading up to the theater, I realized that this was the first time I was going to a Sound! Euphonium event, so I had no idea what the demographic of the fandom was like. Would it be mostly women? Men? What age range?
It was....
It was overwhelmingly male. Men in their 30′s-40′s. Like 95%. It was like the ratio at a Love Live event. Like.... damn.
So I know the characters in Sound! Euphonium are mostly female. But that was always an incidental part of the series to me. I’ve rarely thought about it at all until now. But the reason I like Sound! Euphonium has almost nothing to do with the characters, and everything to do with having been a band kid and relating to the series. Heavily. Sound! Euphonium is such a painfully accurate depiction of what it’s like to be in band, and a good deal of it is just focused on that. And I really didn’t think there was much fanservice for male fans.
But then I thought about it again. And then I remembered season 2. That was when I started to fall out of the series, because all of a sudden it started being a whole less about band and a whole lot more about girl-girl drama. I never really cared about Mizore/Nozomi or Kumiko/Asuka at all, because I felt those story arcs could have taken place at almost any school club.
But I thought this movie was very good. It had a nice mix of character drama and band drama. Seeing the girls adjust to being senpai, going through auditions again, and preparing for their next tournament was everything I would have hoped it would be. I definitely recommend this movie. And the ending made me feel like there might be more? I hope so!
But.... I was... a little distracted....
The state of the crowd in the theater gave me very mixed feelings.
Do older men have a right to enjoy good media on its own merit which just happens to star young female characters? ....Yes...... I suppose there’s no good reason they shouldn’t........ I always thought it was kinda funny that people in the west treated bronies like such weirdos for liking a show with female characters when that’s the NORM in Japan. While children’s anime in Japan with girl characters are generally aimed at girls, and boys at boys, after a certain point it becomes much more normal for women to watch things with male characters and men to watch things with female characters.
But... I would be lying if I said I wasn’t pretty uncomfortable in that theater.
I guess the thing is that when I go to a Love Live event, I know exactly what I am getting into. I 100% understand why the fandom is mostly male, and I expect it. I was not prepared this time. I really thought Sound! Euphonium would have more female fans. I really did. I don’t see why it wouldn’t have universal appeal. It’s such a good series. ITS SUCH A GOOD SERIES.
I cried a lot in this movie for reasons that had nothing to do with the character moments. I just cried because the music was really pretty and the visuals were so nice. Man I miss music, I miss band......... Please watch Sound! Euphonium. Please tell your friends to watch Sound! Euphonium. Please.
Well. The first season at least. And this movie.

Daisuke, Takahiko & Nobunari (3BK) Interview on QuadAxel Pt.1/2
This interview didn’t feel long when I read it, but it sure as hell does now that I’m trying to translate and format it, so I’ll split it in half :P
Tumblr media
Some notes: I’ve honestly no idea how Takahiko came to call Nobunari “Naru-kun” but it’s adorable and I refuse to alter it, so Naru-kun = Nobunari. I had to let myself use lol and ahahaha for laughter (it’s what the magazine editors did!). Haven’t had anyone proofread it for me yet so there might be some minor edits later.  Part 2 here
The Vancouver Team: An everlasting bond
Daisuke Takahashi, Nobunari Oda and Takahiko Kozuka, eternal friends and rivals who helped popularize the sport, discuss the first time they met, their memories of the Vancouver Olympics, future plans for their skating careers. [summarized intro]
Thank you for granting us this precious opportunity today. Is this the first sit-down with all 3 of you since the 2009 program (Figure Skating Opening of the Season Special by TV Asahi)?
Dai: Oh, is it?
Nobu: Yeah, we haven’t had one since then, right?
Dai: I guess not.
Taka: Right. Do you remember on that program there was a question about what Doraemon items you wanted? And when I answered, “The Dictator Switch” [“Dokusai Switch” a switch to erase the existence of bothersome people], you both went, “Wow, how scary!” lol.
Dai: I don’t remember.
Nobu: I don’t remember.
Takahiko: I remember very well.
Dai/Nobu: Ahahaha LOL
Anyway, I would like to start by asking you about when you first met. Between the 3 of you, were Takahashi-san and Oda-san the first to meet?
Dai: Wasn’t the first time we met at that competition in Kyoto?
Nobu: Yeah, the Western Japan Elementary and Middle School Championships.
Dai: Yeah! That was the first time I saw Nobu.
Nobu: Yeah, that’s right. My impression back then was, ‘Wow, there are some talented guys coming from Okayama.”
Dai: And then I started to commute to the Takatsuki rink, and we started talking in the 1st  or 2nd year of Middle School.
Nobu: Yeah, it was around that time we started getting closer [talking more intimately].
What did you call each other back then?
Nobu: Everyone was already calling him Dai-chan back then.
Dai: What did I call Nobu back then?
Nobu: Didn’t you call me “Nobunari-kun”? Yeah, it was “Nobunari-kun” lol. Back then, Dai-chan already had the status of a junior champion. When his music came on during practice, everyone would scramble to get closer to the walls, like “I’ll get in trouble if I get in his way.” So I already had the image of him, like, “Wow, what an amazing person.” But even so, I still called him Dai-chan lol.
Dai: Everyone called me Dai-chan.
Nobu: Yeah. And then I think I first saw Takahiko at the Novice Japanese National Championships (1998). He’s two years younger than me, so he was in the Novice B championships. That was the first time I caught a glimpse of him.
Taka: Yeah.
Nobu: I had been hearing people talk like, “Kozuka-san’s son is so talented,” so I thought, “Ah, so this is Kozuka-san’s kid.”
Taka: When I first met Naru-kun it was at the Osaka Junior Nats (1999). You were there, right?
Nobu: Yeah, I was! I was eliminated from the preliminary rounds after the short program. My first Junior competition, I ended up 27th lol.
Dai: Ahahaha lol
Nobu: That was when I performed at a Junior event by invitation for the first time coming from Novice, and I was so excited to compete in Osaka, I ended up putting too much energy into everything and screwed up all the jumps lol.
Taka (looking straight at Nobu): You kinda always did that, you put too much energy into it lol.
Nobu: Yeah, yeah! That’s why I’m skating better now lol. Way back then it was like I’d get too tense.
At that time, were you at a point where you’d share lodgings and meet at competitions and stuff?
Nobu: I went to a competition in Belgium with Takahiko. That was my first international event.
Taka: Oh, that’s right.
Nobu: Takahiko had already gone to many international events and knew how to get by overseas, so he taught me all sorts of things. I was just about to start high school and I was studying for the entrance exam. While we were abroad, he’d always sit next to me and tutor me.
Dai: LOL
Nobu: I’d be like, “I really don’t get math!!” lol.
Dai: Really?
Nobu: He was always in my room, solving my math problems for me. He’d teach me math the entire time.
Dai: LOOL
Taka: I’d get lonely on my own, so we’d just stay together the whole time lol
Nobu: Takahiko’s mother (Coach Kozuka Sachiko) and my mother (Coach Oda Noriko) were really close, so we’d often have meals together, too.
Taka: We had waffles too, right?
Nobu: We did, we did!
Taka: They wouldn’t let us give any to the girls. We were told that it was only for the guys.
Nobu: Yeah, that’s right! We were with Aki Sawada and Nana Takeda and the others.
Dai: Ah, that’s nostalgic.
Nobu: Yeah.
Taka: And everyone’s gotten married already. It’s been a long time. And then, the first time I met Dai-chan at a competition, it was in Croatia, right?
Dai: Right. With Hirokazu Kobayashi and others.
Taka: Hirokazu was a senpai from my rink, so I became friends with Dai-chan through him.
Dai: Right, starting from there.
And when did you first start to become aware of each other as rivals?
Nobu: It was the season after I won the Junior World Championships (2005). Even if I wasn’t really aware [of a rivalry], people around me started comparing me to Dai-chan.
Dai: There was also the fact that it was the Torino Olympic (2006) season.
Nobu: And that spring I got into the same university (Kansai University), so that drew even more attention.
Dai: Right, yeah.
Nobu: And, when I was asked, “Who is your rival?” I’d answer, “It’s Dai-chan.” Because I knew that was the answer they were looking for lol.
Dai: And that was when we started appearing in competitions together more often.
Nobu: Right, yeah.
Dai: There wasn’t a lot of overlap during Juniors right? Because I went to Seniors early.
Nobu: We didn’t overlap at all.
Taka: At what age did you rise to Seniors, Dai-chan?
Dai: I think I was 16?
Nobu: At the Kyoto NHK Cup (2002) when Dai was competing, I was really excited to go and root for him. I was yelling, “Go, Dai-chan!” with everyone else from the rink.
Dai: Hahahaha.
Nobu: Now that I think about it, I didn’t run into Takahiko much at Junior competitions, right?
Taka: There was some overlap, but I messed up a bunch of things, so it was very scattered. I played soccer too much, I did too much warming-up…
Nobu: And you forgot your costume…
Taka: That was at Nats, actually!
Nobu: At Nats, huh!
Taka: Yeah, the Nagoya one (in 2006). That was so bad, man.
Dai: Ahahaha LOL.
As Takahashi-san and Oda-san were being called “rivals,” Kozuka-san joined in, and the three you of you went on to fight fiercely against one another for a long period of time. Looking back, what are your thoughts now?
Nobu: We were always told that we were “in a fierce battle against each other” but that’s not how it felt to us, right?
Dai: Right, yeah.
Taka: Yeah.
Nobu: Dai-chan was always great at the interpretation and steps, Takahiko had amazing skating skills, so what I felt the most was that I wanted to absorb their skills.
Dai: We were at the same rink so we had a lot of opportunities to watch each other train. When you notice the other person is working hard, it makes you work hard, too. So it was good to receive that kind of stimulation. The thing is, when it’s time to compete, you can only think about your own performance.
Nobu: Right.
Taka: Yeah, that’s right. When we were together in competitions, we weren’t that aware of each other, it was more when we were in different competitions and I heard someone got good results that I’d think, “I better do my best, too!” That was often good motivation for me.
Nobu: When I found out that people from other sports, both men and women, don’t speak to their rivals that much, I was surprised. After I retired, I realized that in figure skating the atmosphere doesn’t get tense like that.
Dai: That’s true.
Nobu: People are so surprised, like, “Wow, you get along really well.” And for us that was just normal.
Taka: Yeah, that’s normal.
Nobu: That’s why when people asked me about rivals, I think my true feeling was that it didn’t quite make sense.
Was that because you’ve been seeing each other often since you were little?
Dai: And I think it’s also because our sport isn’t 1 vs 1 [there is no direct confrontation].
Taka: Because it’s an individual competition, yeah.
Dai: You get your results from what you do on your own.
Taka: Since it’s a competition where judges decide the scores, it makes it easier.
Dai: Right, since other people are giving you the scores.
Nobu: Yeah, that’s right.
Dai: And it’s whether you yourself were able to get good results or not.
Taka: Sometimes you get results, sometimes you don’t. When you do, you’re happy, when you don’t, you’re sad…
Nobu: It’s all your responsibility. It felt more like fighting against yourself.
Out of the many competitions in which you were all together, which one left the biggest impression?
Dai: For me it was probably the NHK Cup in Nagano, when the three of us got 1st  (Takahashi-san), 2nd (Oda-san) and 3rd  (Kozuka-san) places.
Taka: In 2006, right?
Nobu: Right, all 3 of us skated the FS clean! I went after Takahiko, and I saw that he did so well and I thought, “Aaaah, I better work hard!”
Taka: That was when I came in 4th in the SP. Chengjiang Li was 3rd.
Dai: Chengjiang Li! Ah, that takes me back!
Nobu: I wonder how he’s doing these days.
Taka: Back then, during the press conference, somebody asked, “Are the rumors that you’re practicing a Quad-Quad true?” And he said, “Yes, I am.”
Dai: Seriously?!
Taka: Really!
Nobu: That time in Nagano, Takahiko and I went to the bathhouse every night, didn’t we?
Taka: Oh yeah! We did lol. We asked Dai-chan, “Won’t you come?” and he said, “My body feels sluggish, I’m not going.” Lol
Nobu: Oh yeah, yeah, we got rejected, didn’t we! We got rejected and went by ourselves lol.
Dai: LOL. Oh, but there was also Vancouver (Olympics 2010), of course.
Taka: Vancouver was so much fun.
Nobu: I have some hilarious memories from after the competition was over lol
Dai & Taka: LOL
Nobu: We kept using skype nonstop lol.
Dai: Even though we were right next to each other lol.
Taka: I was using Skype, and Dai-chan was like "What's that?" So I set it up, and it was like, "let's try it out, let's all try it." "There is also a chat function." "Let's try that, let's!"
Nobu: Even though the distance was like this [measures with his hands].
Dai: LOOL We were right next to each other!
Taka: Yeah.
Nobu: And we kept using the chat but somehow we were silent. No one would say anything.
Taka: We would just talk through the text chat instead.
Dai: Yeah, we were just quiet the whole time!
Nobu: That will always be funny lol
Taka: It was so funny, right? lol
Nobu: And then we went to the Olympic village to stuff ourselves with McDonald’s lol.
Dai: It was like, "Do we go?!"
Nobu: What time was that? It was quite late wasn't it. I feel like it was the middle of the night.
Dai: It was.
Taka: It was like 3 or 4AM.
Nobu: Yeah, yeah!
Taka: The McDonald’s was open 24/7, so we went to grab a bite.
Nobu: It was so much fun.
Dai: So much fun.
Taka: And then when we were going to support the girls at the ladies' event, we put on face-paint lol.
Nobu: We did, we did lol.
Taka: Dai was going to write Japan on his cheek, but he wrote it backwards lol.
Dai: LOOL Because I was writing it while looking in the mirror so I got it wrong!
Nobu: And we were like, "No, Dai-chan, no! It's wrong!" lol
Taka:  Yeah, like, “That clearly just says ‘today’!” lol
Dai: “Today” LOL
(T/N: 日本 (Japan) backwards becomes 本日 which means “today”)
Was there a service in the Olympic village where you could get your face painted?
Nobu: Well, we decided we all wanted to paint our faces, so we bought art supplies and did it ourselves in the men's bathroom of the Pacific Colosseum (Sports Arena).
Dai: Wasn't it Takahiko who went to buy the art supplies?
Taka: Yeah!
Dai: That was a lot of fun. And at the closing ceremony there was a ball flying around for some reason lol.
Nobu, Taka: Ahahahaha yeah!!
Nobu: Before I knew it, we were chasing after it LOL. It was so cold that day, right?
Taka: Yeah, at the closing ceremony it was freezing cold.
You three chasing the ball in the closing ceremony became a hot topic among fans.
Dai: Really?
Nobu: I didn't think they would film that!
Dai: We didn't know, yeah.
Nobu: Chasing after a giant ball...
Taka: Like it was Sports Day or something.
Dai: We were running after it with all our might lol
Taka: We were so hyped up.
Nobu: Now that I think about it, we were so innocent when we did that, right? Even though we were all over 20.
Dai: Ahahaha I was well over twenty lol.
You were able to make such good memories because the three of you were able to go together, isn't that so?
Dai: Yeah, that's right.
Nobu: I don’t think we could even imagine not going together, all three of us.
Dai: Yeah, and not doing all this weird stuff lol.
Taka: Yeah, we wanted to go together.
The season before that (2008-09) was when Takahashi-san sustained an injury. What kind of effect did that end up having on Oda-san and Kozuka-san?
Nobu: That year there was the Worlds in Los Angeles (2009, when the number of spots for the Vancouver Olympics would be decided). Back then, I went thinking that we had to get the 3 spots also for Dai-chan’s sake. But then I just crashed and burned; I jumped too many times, and it was like, “Oh, crap, this is bad!”
Dai & Taka: LOL
Nobu: And then Takahiko really put in the work for us. Somehow we were able to save the 3 spots by the skin of our teeth, because our combined placements were exactly 13.
Taka: We were 7th (Oda) and 6th (Kozuka). That was really nerve-wrecking.
Nobu: If either of us dropped a spot, it’d be hopeless.
Taka: I was in the last group at the time, and Naru-kun was the last of the 3rd group.
Nobu: Yeah, yeah! And I thought I’d skated clean!
Taka: You even did a fist bump and everything.
Nobu: I jumped too much...
Taka: I can never forget the look on the coach’s face when you came back.
Dai: LOL
Nobu: And then I just watched the last group kind of like in prayer. It was such a feeling of relief when we just barely secured the 3 spots.
Taka: The Worlds from the year before (2008) was in Sweden and that was my first appearance at Worlds. And the year before (2007), it was just Dai-chan and Naru-kun, right?
Dai: Yeah, it was in Tokyo.
Nobu: Ah, I remember!
Taka: I was in the audience rooting really hard for you guys. And then Naru-kun found me and was like, “We got the 3 spots for you, kiddo, so do your best!”
Nobu: I wasn’t really in a position to say something so arrogant lol.
Taka: But I was thankful you worked so hard.
Dai: He worked hard.
Part 2/2 posted here: Their thoughts on the popularity of men’s figure skating, what they admire about each other, their views on their careers after retirement, plans for the future, how to contribute to the development of the sport, Quad revolution, Pyeongchang Olympics, what kind of ice show they would create if given the chance.
