Dreaming of New Adventures Outside by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view looking to the northwest across the trees in this part of Coconino National Forest while hiking the Devil's Bridge Trail. My thinking in composing this image was to use the high ground where I was located and then angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward and create a sweeping view across this forested landscape. The mesas and buttes off in the distance would then rise up in the image and avoid a more flattened look. There would also be a complementary set of color contrasts between the greens and more earth-tones present in the lower portion of the image with the blues of the skies above.

On August 8th 1984 the Kylesku Bridge officially opened to traffic.
The Kyslesku Bridge in Sutherland on the north-west of Scotland carries the non-trunk A894 across Loch a' ChĂ irn BhĂ in between Unapool and Kylestrome.
The bridge was designed for what was then Highland Regional Council by Ove Arup and Partners. It was, in part, financed by the European Community, and built by Morrison Construction Ltd. The cost was £4 million, rather more than the budgeted £2ž million, in part due to difficult weather conditions during construction.
The structure replaced a succession of ferries which had crossed between Kyslesk and Kylestrome since the early 19th century. When this ferry was not running, the only alternative was a 100 mile (160 km) detour around the NW Highlands.
Over the years, various ferries came and went, and small car-carrying ferries first appeared between the wars. The Kylesku Ferry was unusual in being free for much of its life. The Maid of Kylesku, a two car ferry, was built for the Kylesku crossing in the early 1950s, where it was operated until replaced by the Queen of Kylesku in 1967.
Check out the video below for a clip of the Queen of Kylesku, and can you imagine bairns being allowed to help like that nowadays!
The Bridge is one of those seminal points of the NC500 and lovers of road trips will appreciate the impressive way of affording us such magnificent views and access. There is a large car park on the North side where you can stop and take in the views.
Pics are of the bridge, of course and two of the ferries that used to sail betwen the points.

Kukulkan (Quetzalcoatl): Feathered Serpent And Mighty Snake God
Known under a number of different names, Kukulkan, the Feathered Serpent was one of the most important gods in Mesoamerica.
The Aztecs called him Quetzalcoatl and the ancient Maya referred to him as Kukulkan. The Kâicheâ group of Maya named him Gukumatz.
Was this mighty snake deity a real historical person?
It is not easy to trace the ancient history of Kukulkan. Like all of the feathered serpent gods in Mesoamerican cultures, Kukulkan is thought to have originated in Olmec mythology and we still know very little about the mysterious Olmec civilization.
The true identity of the god Kukulkan becomes an even greater problem due to the confusing references to a man who bore the name of the Mayan god. Because of this, the distinction between the two has become blurred.
Around the 10th century, a priest or ruler appeared in Chichen Itza, a sacred site that was one of the greatest Mayan centers of the YucatĂĄn peninsula, Mexico where we also find El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulkan.
Kukulkan has his origins among the Maya of the Classic Period, (200 AD to 1000) when he was known as Waxaklahun Ubah Kan, the War Serpent.
Maya writers of the 16th century describe Kukulkan as a real historical person, but the earlier 9th-century texts at Chichen Itza never identified him as human and artistic representations depicted him as a Vision Serpent entwined around the figures of nobles.
According to ancient Maya beliefs, Kukulkan - popularly known as the Feathered Serpent - was the god of the wind, sky, and the Sun. He was a supreme leader of the gods, depicted, just like Quetzalcoatl. Kukulkan gave mankind his learning and laws. He was merciful and kind, but he could also change his nature and inflict great punishment and suffering on humans.
According to Maya legend, the Maya were visited by a robed Caucasian man with blond hair, blue eyes, and a beard who taught the Maya about agriculture, medicine, mathematics, and astronomy. This being was Kukulkan â the Feathered Serpent.
Kukulcan warned the Maya of another bearded white man who would not only conquer the indigenous people of Central America but would also enforce a new religion upon them before he was to return. Despite the warning, the Maya mistakenly welcomed the invading Cortes as Quetzalcoatl.
The cult of Kukulkan spread as far as the Guatemalan Highlands, where Postclassic feathered serpent sculptures are found with open mouths from which protrude the heads of human warriors.
Hundreds of North and South American Indian and South Pacific legends tell of a white-skinned, bearded lord who traveled among the many tribes to bring peace about 2,000 years ago. This spiritual hero was best known as Quetzalcoatl.
Some of his many other names were:
Kate-Zahl (Toltec)
Kul-kul-kan (Maya)
Tah-co-mah (NW America)
Waicomak (Dakota)
Wakea (Cheyenne, Hawaiian and Polynesian)
Waikano (Orinoco)
Hurakan
the Mighty Mexico
E-See-Co-Wah (Lord of Wind and Water)
Chee-Zoos
the Dawn God (Puan, Mississippi)
Hea-Wah-Sah (Seneca),
Taiowa, Ahunt Azoma
E-See-Cotl (New Guinea)
Itza-Matul (Yucatan)
Zac-Mutul (Mayan)
Wakon-Tah (Navajo)
Wakona (Algonquin)
Kukulkan emerged from the ocean, and disappeared in it afterward. Before he left, he promised that he will return one day in the future, but he never revealed whenâŚ

Outside of Cuba, Palo is generally called Palo Mayombe ; however, this is a misnomer since not all lineages and houses are truly Mayombe â in fact, most are not. To my knowledge there is only one (perhaps a couple) Munanzo outside of Cuba that are accepted as a true Mayombe houses amongst the elders on the Island.
In Cuba, âPalo Monteâ is used far more frequently to speak to the entire body of Regla-Kongo Palo tradition. Other terms such as Palo Cruzado (âcrossed paloâ, denoting heavy syncretization with other religions), Palo Cristiano (âChristian paloâ) and Palo Judio (âJewish paloâ, not actually jewish, but simply non-Christian) deserve a brief mention. However, these are not specific ramas of Palo, but rather terms that are used to denote the degree of syncretism and mixing in individual lineages and practices.
There are many houses (munansos) and foundational lineages (ramas) of Palo Monte, but commonly they are understood to fit within three major  forms or sub âreglasâ within the greater Regla-Kongo:
Mayombe
Biyumba (Vrillumba o Brillumba)
Kimbiza
Palo Mayombe is the oldest and most orthodox form of Palo. The origins trace back to a specific Nkisi cult in the Mayombe region of Cabinda (NW Congo) from where it gets its name and the tradition came into its own in the caves and wilderness of the Pinar del Rio highlands of Cuba. Mayomberos typically shun away from syncretism and are extremely orthodox in our practices. The most well known of the Mayombe houses are the houses of Batalla Saca EmpeĂąoâ and âBejuco Nfindaâ.
Palo Biyumba developed out of Palo Mayombe and rose in popularity during Cubaâs war of Independence. It was the first regla to initiate people of non-Bantu ancestry and frequently worked with and developed pacts with dead spirits of no particular blood or spiritual lineage (often times to send them out for warring intentions). It is a vast regla and has many ramas and sub-lineages. Indeed, a great number of houses today are some offshoot of Biyumba. Broadly speaking, Palo Biyumba is more oriented toward the various mpungos and over time some lineages have introduced a degree of syncretization with elements of Ocha and Catholicism.
Palo Kimbisa was popular on the eastern side of the Cuban island and has absorbed many influences from Catholicism to Freemasonry to Haitian Vodou. Kimbisa likely originated within an already syncretized Catholic-Kongo religious tradition from the Kingdom of Kongo following Kimpa Vitaâs Christian reform in the 18th C. In Kimbisa the mpungos are paramount and are seen as divinities and saints. Thus, Kimbiseros will venerate the mpungos and focus much of their work calling upon them, instead of upon the dead. The most well known Kimbisa rama is AndrĂŠs Petitâs La Regla Kimbisa de Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje.
The Kimbisa prendas/ngangas I have seen also tend to be huge in comparison to Mayombe. Although my elders have reassured me that there are Kimbisa prendas that are built almost identical to Mayombe as there is more variance per house/lineage than across the greater sub-reglas. It is also common to see Kimbisa (as well as Briyumba) prendas with crucifixes. Moreover, many Kimbiseros and Biymberos will make a distinction between prendas judias or prendas ndoki(those without crucifixes and containing the bones of non-baptized individuals) used to curse, kill, and other malefica; and prendas cristianas (with cross and baptized nfumbe) used to heal and general benefica. This distinction does not appear in Mayombe.

State Farm Canceled Hundreds of Pacific Palisades Homeownersâ Policies Before Devastating Wildfire Strikes
As wildfires ravage Southern California, homeowners in Pacific Palisades find themselves grappling with an unbearable reality: their homes are burning, and their insurance policiesâonce their safety netâwere canceled just months ago by State Farm.
In a move justified by the company as a strategy to avoid âfinancial failure,â State Farm canceled over 72,000 homeownersâ policies statewide, with Pacific Palisadesâa now-charred affluent neighborhoodâbearing a significant brunt. James Woods, a renowned actor and Pacific Palisades resident, summed up the communityâs frustration on social media. âActually, one of the major insurance companies canceled all the policies in our neighborhood about four months ago,â he wrote.

There is a large car park on the North side where you can stop and take in the views
