Billions in trade came to a screeching halt at U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast ports after members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) began walking off the job after 12:01 a.m. ET on October 1. The ILA is North America’s largest longshoremen’s union, with roughly 50,000 of its 85,000 members making good on the threat to strike at 14 major ports subject to a just-expired master contract with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), and picketing workers beginning to appear at ports. The union and port ownership group failed to reach agreement by midnight on a new contract in a protracted battle over wage increases and use of automation. In a last-ditch effort on Monday to avert a strike that will cause significant harm to the U.S. economy if it is lengthy — at least hundreds of millions of dollars a day at the largest ports like New York/New Jersey — the USMX offered a nearly 50% wage hike over six years, but that was rejected by the ILA, according to a source close to the negotiations. The port ownership group said it hoped the offer would lead to a resumption of collective bargaining.

The 14 ports where preparations for a strike have been underway are Boston, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Wilmington, North Carolina, Baltimore, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami, New Orleans, Mobile, and Houston. New York Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement issued shortly after midnight that “the first large-scale eastern dockworker strike in 47 years began at ports from Maine to Texas, including at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In preparation for this moment, New York has been working around the clock to ensure that our grocery stores and medical facilities have the essential products they need.” Rhetoric from ILA leadership has been aggressive in the weeks leading up to the strike, with ILA president Harold Daggett, who was a union member the last time it went out on strike in 1977, telling rank-and-file members — who unanimously voted to authorize a strike — in a recent video message, “We’ll crush them.” 

[...] The most significant issues would be faced by food and automobile industries, Kamins said, as they rely especially heavily on the ports that will be shut down. While a surge in inflation is highly unlikely even with a longer strike, even a modest reacceleration could create uncertainty and force the Federal Reserve to be more cautious about lowering interest rates, which would weigh on the overall outlook for job growth and investment. A one-week strike could cost the U.S. economy $3.78 billion, according to an analysis by The Conference Board, and cause supply chain slowdowns through mid-November. In all, the ports threatened with strikes handle $3 trillion annually in U.S. annual international trade.

Many industries are preparing for major repercussions. Noushin Shamsili, CEO and president of Nuco Logistics, which specializes in pharmaceutical imports and exports, said the strike comes at a critical time for inventory replenishment for the pharma sector. “Almost all of this industry is just on time,” said Shamsili. “Raw materials are being brought in to complete drug manufacturing. Medical supplies for clinics and hospitals are on these vessels. For a while importers did not bring in a lot of cargo because they were overflowing with supplies post-Covid. Now they have started reordering medical devices, gloves, syringes, and tubing.” Shamsili also said the East Coast ports are a gateway for generic medicine made in India. Approximately 48% of the active pharmaceutical ingredients used in the U.S. are being imported from India. Without these APIs, medications cannot be produced. APIs are also manufactured in Europe, which also use the East Coast ports as U.S. points of entry.

The Tale of Crystal Teresa is a webcomic that I have been working on developing for 4 years. The concept was first born as a fanime parody idea in 2016 but after years of it going no where I decided to buckle down and turn it into an actual comic in 2020. What is your favorite soothing song? The one where even without the lyrics just the melody and the memory would calm your soul down deep.

Actually, I have a really good answer for this:

Empty Streets by Late Night Alumni (and also Breathe by Telepopmusik) were grounding songs for me. I used to be really stressed out all of the time and when I broke I would just put on headphones and listen to either of these songs and find my way back in to my body. I once had this happen on a car ride and my former partner was mystified by the ritual because, in her words, "we handle stress in very different ways."

Story time!

I used to run a movie theater. Technically a remote market. I am still in touch with the two protégés I left behind to handle things after I left. I liked what I did. I was good at it.

But running a movie theatre is no joke. It's insanely hard work.

Every year I used to have Winter Holiday a week before the 25th because movie theatres December 23rd-Jan 6th is YOU MUST WORK time. It was snowing and my former partner and I were driving from the state we lived to where her parents lived, two states over. The weather was crappy. People were driving awful and she was needing me to provide a lot of grounding in discussing roleplay stuff and being engaged in conversation. I was on edge and couldn't really relax.

Then I got a call from my boss in Kansas.

There was a crappy James Franco comedy movie about North Korea called The Interview. N.K had declared that should this movie come out, as scheduled, on Christmas day then a theatre in the country would be attacked. That call was from the higher ups saying that our company were complying with the demands and taking down the movie and I had a list of instructions to pass on.

So I get to it and as I am working with catching up, texting info and calling my team I find out the next thing had happened. A CO2 tank ran out and all of the soda in the building was offline. A week before the Busy Season this isn't life ending, but it means I need to call our contacts in NuCO, my property manager and the team at the neighboring theatre, call my boss back to see if this is a closure worthy situation and then call my team back with information on the situation.

I sometimes tell people about this thing I have called "Utility Mode" (Tilly for short!) where I just drop all systems unimportant to Handling The Thing and I **DEAL WITH IT**. I was in that and it was spiking my former partner's anxiety while she was driving.

In retrospect I should have requested we pull over at the next stop.

Bit by bit I got things handled. I had the trailers for the offensive movie taken down and a plan to remove the marketing, refund presales and print out information for visitors at the theatre that day. I had a list of beverages which we could sell, vouchers out for those who wanted carbonated beverages, the truck on priority to be there within 2 hours and my facility guy to coordinate the beverage room and get the pipes flowing again because air bubbles would knock the system offline if we didn't flush them before the CO2 arrived.

I cannot say how long the process took but we were still in Michigan so less than 90 minutes.

Afterwards my former partner, severely rattled from seeing me in this mode which she did not see me in often (more sympathy in retrospect, given new Understandings in my life) tried to calm me down and I told her to focus on the road and let me Handle This. She was upset but complied.

I then listened to Empty Streets in its entirety with my eyes closed and just settled back into my body.

I have no idea why that song grounds me. It reminds me a lot of London. Especially in the time of life when I was living on my own and just liked to walk the West End at 1am. Something about that connection really just vibes.

I dunno.

Anyway, not quite the Answer you were expecting, but one that was nice for me to type out.

Tienen un largo de 42 centrímetros y un peso de entre 240-450 gramos, es de habitos diurnos y es posible verlo en el suelo escondido entre las totoras, hace sus nidos en el suelo entre el pasto alto y coloca alrededor de 5 y 7 huevos y su esperanza de vida es de unos 4 a 5 años aunque en cautiverio pueden llegar a vivir unos cuantos años más.

Fernando Aramburu: Der Junge

„Ich bin mir bewusst, dass ich als Erzählungsträger eines Unglücks fungiere, dessen Ausmaß beschreiben zu wollen, immer vergeblich bleiben muss.“ (S. 25) „Der 23. Oktober 1980 war ein Donnerstag. Fünfzig Schüler im Alter von fünf und sechs Jahren, plus drei Erwachsene, verloren ihr Leben infolge einer Propangasexplosion in einer Schule von Ortuella.“ (S. 26, 27) Für die Eltern und den Großvater des verunglückten Nucos geht das Leben weiter. Die Trauer verändert alle Betroffenen. Auch das Verhalten der Nachbarn, aller Bekannten und Freunde verändert sich. Wie soll man mit so viel Anteilnahme umgehen, der ständigen Erinnerung an den Unfall und die damit verbundene Leerstelle in der Familie? Der mit vielen Preisen ausgezeichnete Fernando Aramburu aus dem Baskenland schreibt einfühlsam und mit der nötigen Distanz über eine baskische Arbeiterfamilie. Im Zentrum steht unter anderem der Großvater Nicasio, der aufgrund seines Alters dem Tod auf seine ganz eigene Weise begegnet. Seine Gedanken drehen sich nicht mehr um die laufenden Rechnungen. Denn er lebt in seiner Eigentumswohnung und hat sein Auskommen. Der Vater José Miguel dagegen trägt noch für seine Familie die Verantwortung, die durch den drohenden Verlust seiner Arbeit um einiges schwerer wiegt. Die Mutter Mariaje erlaubt dem Autor Einblicke in ihr Leben. Anfangs stellt sie in einem Interview fest, sie könne über José Miguel nur Vorteilhaftes berichten, auch wenn manche diese Beschreibung als weniger interessant empfänden. „Mit den Jahren stelle ich fest, dass ich weniger unglücklich war, als ich einmal geglaubt habe“. (S. 14) Vordergründig könnte man bei diesem Familienroman vermuten, es gehe um das Unglück und die damit verbundene Trauer. Verstärkt wird diese Vermutung durch die gedankliche Konzentration des Großvaters auf seinen Enkel. Er hält seine Erinnerungen mit ganzer Kraft fest. Doch im Laufe verschiedener Ereignisse wird deutlich, dass Mariaje nicht nur als Überlebende wichtig ist. Sie zeigt, wie sie einen Schritt vor den Nächsten setzt. Jeden Tag. Ihr Mut und ihre Kraft beschreiben, wie stark Frauen sein können. Mit einem Kunstgriff integriert der Autor eine wichtige Erzählstimme. Es ist der Textträger, das Buch wird damit ein eigenständiges Wesen. „Es“ hat seine eigene Meinung und seine differenzierte Kommentierung zu den Schicksalsschlägen. Ihm reicht es, „als Plattform für eine Geschichte zu dienen, die im hohen Maße das Ergebnis ...“ (S. 245) vertraulicher Mitteilungen widerspiegelt.
