You're All Just Jealous of My Jetpack by Tom Gauld
If you haven’t yet stumbled upon Tom Gauld and his delightfully wistful cartoon musings on, well, everything, then prepare yourself—you’re in for a treat. The fine folks at Drawn & Quarterly are now releasing a paperback edition of some of his best work, previously only available in hardcover. This means you can finally enjoy his sharp, literary wit without fear of accidentally bludgeoning…

The ongoing violence in Gaza, Myanmar, Ukraine and Yemen is a confronting reminder, if one was ever needed, of the ineffectiveness of the United Nations and other elements of the international system to keep peace. Anyone pondering how and why we got here would benefit from reading Margot Tudor's new book, which provides a history of UN peacekeeping efforts via a series of case-studies from the second half of the twentieth century. It is now reasonably well established that the UN was an expression of the colonial and Cold War interests of nation-states in this period. Conversely, it was also a vehicle to advance the interests of the recently decolonized or ‘non-aligned’ states of the global South (frequently termed ‘the Afro-Asian bloc’ in this book). Less well known, and providing a large part of this book's value, is that the UN was not just a tabula rasa for nation-states, but it was also an actor in its own right. In other words, the UN created, executed and perpetuated particular norms, cultures and actions around the world.
Summary
The end of the ’spirit of Bandung’ in the late 1960s coincided with the passing and retirement of most of the key UN officials involved in the development of the peacekeeping project. By 1971, the Cold War obstructed the UN forums from authorising any new armed peacekeeping missions. Weaving together the contributions of previous chapters, the conclusion reiterates the how UN peacekeepers’ racial prejudices and technocratic logic perpetuated international hierarchies of power, colonial structures, and further suppressed the self-determination of peripheral or minority populations. It addresses the role of the UN peacekeeping missions in supporting - if not, openly enabling - the United States’ anticommunist aggression across the Global South during the decolonisation period. Rather than being passive in this process, however, this book has demonstrated how the UN officials agreed that anticommunism was a peacebuilding strategy for global security. Ultimately, peacekeepers’ unique role in the field shaped the formation of the post-colonial international order, embedding uneven hierarchies of race, expertise, and diplomatic power within newly independent nations and populations.

A reader wrote to me regarding an ethnocentric NPR review of a Korean book and that reminded me that I'm still made about it that piss-poor article. 😂

Close All Tabs - Children of The Vlog
Nothing makes me more uncomfortable than parents willingly putting their children online for clicks ands views. And it’s just getting worse and worse.
This episode from Close All Tabs, goes into the family vlogging sphere. One of the shocking (but let’s be honest it’s not shocking) is the lack of protection for children under 18 being exploited by their parents. Plus a chat with a mommy blogger survivor. The episode is only 33 minutes long, but it’s a good stepping stone into how this industry is harmful.
Listen to it on - Apple, podbean, spotify, amazon and others

ULTRABELLEZA

2023 album. From southern Spain. I just watched her Tiny Desk and was really fascinated by her. She reminds me a lot of Rosalía for obvious reasons, but is a bit more gritty like in track 5, VISIÓN REFLEJO. The Andalusia region comes through in full force on the album. It gives her that edge. She's someone who I'll continue to be following. I just wish I was in Grenada on the train listening to the album.

Excellent. I love my “eat the rich” hat. That shit is snazzy.
I’ve figured out the key difference between the ‘90s Talented Mr Ripley and Ripley (2024).
So in the 90s Ripley, Tom Ripley is a kind of sweet gay man in the homophobic 1960s who just coincidentally (tragically!) happens to be extremely good at murder.
In Ripley (2024) Tom Ripley is a criminal who is actually only ok at crime, but the 1960s people around him are so obsessed with whether he is gay or not that they completely miss that he is a literal murderer. Is he gay? Irrelevant! Look out, bitch, he’s gonna kill you!
I personally enjoy both interpretations. I think the 90s one is more of an emotional roller coaster because Ripley is SO easy to empathize with, and yet you’re watching him do these horrific things like, NO! baby boy, stop!
Whereas in Ripley (2024) it’s more of a Hannibal feel like, damn, these rich jerks kind of have it coming.
I’m seeing some mixed reactions on Tumblr but I think if you take off your “I’m looking for a sweet gay blorbo” hat and put on your “eat the rich” hat you are in for a good time.

It's an ethics AND a safety issue. Trump is planning to stop crash/safety reporting Musk's cars.
A more graphic explanation of why we need to monitor this. (Shows crashed cars, but not the bodies). It's from that time Tesla did deadly beta testing that killed and injured a bunch of people.
Some of these are mostly focused on the national security implications of Musk, SpaceX, and Starlink, but the conflict of interest over things like Self driving cars matter too. It's a fundamental problem that Trump is basically letting Elon Musk make so many decisions for his own benefit.
