hello! I'm back!
I spent most of the last week in NOLA for the Overlook Film Festival, and it was the best time I've had in literal ages. I met so many great people, including three directors, an art director, and an actress, and I got to be ten feet away from Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel! it was truly the greatest long weekend ever; still can't believe it's over.
gonna briefly talk about the movies I got to see, though! most of these have upcoming wide release dates, and you should definitely check them out, if you're able!
CUCKOO (2024) dir. Tilman Singer: Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens lead this really fun, batshit scream-fest that was sooooo queer (thematically and textually) to me. Dan Stevens should always play weird little guys with musical instruments. whatever you think this movie is about: no, it probably isn't. not every beat lands, but the ones that do are pretty damn good. it's going to wide release in August!
ALL YOU NEED IS DEATH (2024) dir. Paul Duane: an Irish folk horror propelled forward by a metal soundtrack interwoven with haunting ballads, and an awakening of something ancient and devastating. described by Duane as a "vibe movie" in the vein of Kurosawa's PULSE and CURE with hints of Żuławski's POSSESSION, it touches on themes of obsession and love and consumption, and mysticism of forgotten pasts. I've still got the music and imagery stuck in my head. the movie will be available to rent digitally soon, and will be going to a currently unnamed streaming service later this year. (thanks for the Q&A, Paul and actress Catherine Siggins! your passion for the project was utterly infectious, and can't wait to see that next film that Paul said is going to "piss a lot of people off"!)
OCULUS (2014) dir. Mike Flanagan: 10th Anniversary Screening & Presentation of the 2024 Master of Horror Award: this plays so well in a packed house that I upped by LBX rating by half a star. the Q&A afterwards made me appreciate the movie (bleakness and all) even more, because I got to listen to Mike Flanagan talk about how he feels he's improved as a storyteller, and how just making anything is invigorating, even if you sort of cringe to look back on some things. his shout-outs about LAKE MUNGO and DOCTOR WHO were for me specifically. oh, also, hashtag ONEMOREDOG for Kate! (thanks for the Q&A, Mike! hope you got the big axe award home okay! get Kate a second dog!)
LOOKING OVER THE GARDEN WALL: a 10th Anniversary Celebration of OVER THE GARDEN WALL (2014) created by Patrick McHale: show creator Patrick McHale and art director Nick Cross came by to tell us all about their work prior to collaborating, and how the show came to be through a process that, they hoped, would create an immensely re-watchable holiday classic. we even got to see McHale's first student film, and Cross' work for a local film festival back in the 00s, and a screening of TOME OF THE UNKNOWN, the original pilot for OTGW. (thanks for the Q&A, Mike and Nick, and for the autographs and doodles afterwards! your work continues to entertain my household every fall.)
ME (2024) dir. Don Hertzfeldt: director Hertzfeldt requested that everyone go into this with as little information as possible, so I'm going to be vague here. this is wildly different from his previous work (IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY, WORLD OF TOMORROW, etc.) in presentation, that I couldn't help but just sort of sit and marvel at it. it's so experimental and unique, and I can't stop thinking about it. (heard from the man's own mouth:) the short film will be paired with a remastered theatrical re-release of IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY (2012) sometime in the next month! (thanks for the Q&A, Don, and for the chat we shared afterwards. your work is immensely important to me, and I feel very lucky to have been able to tell you so. sorry I got a little weepy, and for making you weepy, too. very proud to have been dubbed "the gateway drug" for your work. also stoked for your project with Ari Aster! I'll be front-row when it releases!)
I SAW THE TV GLOW (2024) dir. Jane Schoenbrun: similar to the above description, this is a different and more traditional presentation compared to Shoenbrun's debut feature, creepypasta-inspired WE'RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD'S FAIR (2021). TV GLOW is a slow-burn queer (specifically trans) odyssey filled to the brim with painstakingly recreated 90s TV aesthetics, haunting abstract imagery, and an aura that carried echoes of Lynch's Black Lodge (TWIN PEAKS). the ending is a sucker-punch to the gut paired with some incredible but heartbreaking Cronenberg-style body horror. I spent more time bone-deep sad than I did scared, but that's what I love so much about horror: it can make you feel anything and everything in such extremes, that it can leave you breathless. the movie will be releasing in theaters next month, and I highly recommend seeing it in a theater if you can!
the festival was seriously one of the greatest experiences of my life--like a sleepaway camp that I never wanted to end. I WILL be going again, when I'm able! thanks to everyone (volunteer staff, programmers, vendors, fans, artists) who made my first film festival so fucking amazing. I'll love you all forever~ 👻🪓🍿✨

Monday Night Massacre: Fulci Double Feature
NOLA Horror Film Fest and Creepy Fest 2017 present a free double header from the "Godfather of Gore," Lucio Fulci. First up is "City of the Living Dead," which will be followed by the second movie in this unofficial Gates of Hell trilogy, "The Beyond." City of the Living Dead: A reporter and a psychic race to close the Gates of Hell after the suicide of a clergyman caused them to open, allowing the dead to rise from their graves. The Beyond: A young woman inherits an old hotel in Louisiana where, following a series of supernatural "accidents," she learns that the building was built over one of the entrances to Hell.
Geretta Rosemary Geretta will be in attendance at Fulci Night on September 18. She had the opportunity to work with the godfather of gore himself and she'll be more than happy to answer questions and tell us some stories!
As always, admission is free, and food and drinks are available for purchase. Come out as we lead up to the NOLA Horror Film Fest that weekend!

New Orleans! Food, Films and Fun
I made it to NOLA this past weekend, and I’ve been on my feet running around this fascinating city ever since. The weather has been sun and storms off an on for days, but I’ve manage to explore on foot most of the French Quarter while stealth camping on the streets nearby for a few nights - Spain & N. Peters St. to be more specific.
I’ve had so many great recommendations for food, bars, music and entertainment and it’s taken me awhile to sift through them all. I’ve enjoyed some cajun seafood and pasta, a few beignets, and will eventually have a po’boy before I leave.
Coincidentally, our short horror film The Backpage was chosen to screen this weekend at the Darkness Reigns horror film festival and I was able to be in town to represent it. I met a few great people (including some fellow travelers) and hung out with them for the weekend over drinks, films and music.
I really wanted to share my music among the amazing talent around this city so I managed to find an open mic night at a cool little venue with an excellent crowd: Neutral Ground Coffeehouse. I received a lot of great feedback and I’m considering hitting up one more before I leave town.
Currently staying my last few nights with some mutual friends that were kind enough to offer me a place to stay in the college area a little west of downtown NOLA. So far I’ve really enjoyed the vibe from this city and it’s locals, and I’m really glad I could pass through on this trip. I should be making my way into TEXAS by the end of this week, but I’m sure I’ll be back to NOLA again at which point I would like to explore a little more of the wildlife and areas surrounding the city.

setting
below the cut are copies direct from our site, as it stands currently. when doing our setting info, with new orleans a very real place, we decided the best way to keep true to nola’s unique nature was to let it speak for itself - literally. most of our information includes links to the new orleans city website, so that everything can be as true to form as possible.
ABOUT NOLA
We are set in the mystical Crescent city, New Orleans, Louisiana. Because of this, we do ask for you to hold some suspension of disbelief, as we mold the wonderful real life town to fit the needs of our member base and plot (such as areas being run by center vampire nest leaders, and a massive supernatural migration to NOLA occurring in 2006, or what have you). Still, we want to hold true to the New Orleans of real life, so most of our information is pulled directly from the New Orleans city website to keep true to form so please keep in mind the type of city the real New Orleans is, as well. New Orleans is predominantly Black, massively multicultural, and has festivals of all kinds to celebrate the many different types of people that live there - and we want this to be kept in mind here on our site, and respected to the utmost degree.
THE CITY
1.1 New Orleans is the most haunted city in the United States. This city is a place where the dead refuse to rest, in fact, there is no solid ground to hold them. Famous for its practitioners of the mystical arts, from Voodoo queens to professed vampires and Wiccans, New Orleans sets the stage for all manner of third eye explorations. It’s also been the backdrop for occult-themed films and television shows, from True Blood and Interview with a Vampire to American Horror Story Coven. The proliferation and popularity of walking tours that cast an all-seeing eye onto some of the most infamous haunted sites in the French Quarter and beyond tell the grisly tale. From pirates to yellow fever victims to murdered slaves, all manner of other-worldly creatures may just join you on your stroll. Join the city’s mystical séance. Take a cemetery tour or spend a night in a ghostly hotel. New Orleans features witches and warlocks, vampires and ghosts of every description. New Orleans welcomes everyone: the living, the dead and those souls in between. Read more about this here.
1.2 New Orleans is an eclectic mix of neighborhoods - from the funky, bohemian Bywater all the way to the oak-lined Garden District. There's something for every type of traveler in each part of town, whether you're seeking authentic live music, historic (and quite photogenic) architecture, or a vibrant nightlife scene. New Orleans is home to some of the most interesting architecture, food and entertainment in the world – dispersed through the many diverse neighborhoods, as explained more in our neighborhoods section, as well as can be read about here.
TRANSPORT
2.1 If you’re staying in the French Quarter, Downtown or in the Arts/Warehouse District, you may never need to hire transportation of any kind - you may be able to walk to all of your destinations. Still, New Orleans’ streetcar system is a charming way to explore the city, and you can easily rent bikes, hop a bus, take a ferry, or call a pedicab, a taxi or a limo service whenever you need to. Plus, you'll be able to access all the diverse neighborhoods New Orleans has to offer. You can learn more about the streetcars, riverboat tours, and everything else transportation here.
WEATHER
3.1 New Orleans is a great place to visit year-round - and here you can check out average temperatures and other information for use when writing your threads, and even links to full pages on each of the different months in the seasons guide.
3.2 As we here on Unholy run on a real life timeline, it is currently Fall in New Orleans. The crisp air and dropping temperatures make fall a beloved season around NOLA. In early September, temperatures remain in the upper 80s, but begin to drop for the rest of the season. You can expect temperatures from the upper 70s to the mid 50s from October to November. Fall is the busiest time of year with festivals, sports, and events galore.
HIGHLIGHTS
4.1 New Orleans is an accessible city! That's right, we fully welcome character of all diversities - and New Orleans prides itself on being a city welcome to all - so if you want to include wheelchair accessibility and the accessible transportation, we encourage you to do so. More information can be found here.
4.2 There are iconic streets all around the Crescent city. Tied directly to history, some street names appear in French on signs in the French Quarter, with the street’s Spanish title immortalized in ceramic tile on the sides of buildings on corners (Calle del Maine, Calle del Arsenal). Streets named for saints (St. Ann and St. Peter) often parallel avenues honoring French royals (Conti), a class not particularly known for its moral high ground. You can learn more about these here.
4.3 New to the setting? Use these itineraries provided by the city to see what might interest your character and what they might get into here. From its world-class gastronomy and eclectic art scene to its distinctive architecture and proud neighborhoods, New Orleans feels like no other city. Check out more about this here.
4.4 Just like the above, we want to provide more information rather than less. So, if it helps, here is a link to New Orleans' visitor FAQs. We link this because, again, we are set in a real life city that we want to respect, and sometimes things that we wouldn't even think of will spark muse for someone's character. So, take a look, read through the questions, get a feel for New Orleans as it actually is from the city itself.

I’m happy to share the poster and trailer (below) for Dark Roast, a short film on which I served as assistant director. Like Green Room meets Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, it's a blood-splattered horror-comedy of errors with a punk rock ethos.
The short film was created by writer-director Topher Hansson as calling card for an eventual feature film version. Hansson also stars in the film alongside Kati McCarron, J.D. Achille, Chris Goodwin, Jose Guns Alves, Codey Gillum, Chris Fisher, and Dane C. Volke.
Dark Roast will have its world premiere at the NOLA Horror Film Fest in New Orleans, LA on September 23, followed by October screenings at the Sanford International Film Festival in Sanford, ME and the Halloween International Film Festival in Kill Devil Hills, NC.
Read on to watch the trailer and read the synopsis. I think a lot of you will enjoy it.

It's Halloween night, and Vanessa and Nathan, members of the punk band Piss Bucket, have their biggest show yet lined up. This could be just the ticket they need to leave their routine existence behind. All they need to do to make the show is kill time until the end of their shift serving coffee behind the counter of the Grind Haus. But when bodies start to drop and threatening phone calls from a psychopathic killer pour in they soon realize time isn’t the only thing being killed. To escape their mundane lives slinging coffee they'll need to escape alive first.

New Orleans
I have never had a bucket list, but in case if I were ever to write one, visiting the city of New Orleans would absolutely be in the top five. There is just something in Nola (as the citizens like to call it) that caught my eyes when I was a young girl and I have no intentions of letting this dream of mine go. The city straddles the great Mississippi River and is often described as the most unique city in North America. New Orleans is popular for its jazz music, expertly prepared cuisines and festivals such as Mardi Gras. Although, it is already a lot to offer for a plain old tourist, these are still not the most interesting things to visit the city for. It is actually the paranormal vibe in my opinion.
New Orleans is one of the most haunted cities in the United States. This city is a place where the dead refuse to rest; in fact, there is no solid ground to hold them because of the swamps. Nola is famous for its practitioners of the mystical arts, from Voodoo queens to professed vampires and Wiccans, New Orleans sets the stage for all manner of third eye explorations. It inspired a lot of television shows and films such as True Blood, American Horror Story and my favorite: Interview with a Vampire. Also, for me the fact that Nola’s tourism is well aware how inviting their paranormal offers are is another huge plus. You can visit cemeteries at nighttime, there countless of haunting tours and there are voodoo shops at every corner.
New Orleans is truly a dream city for any traveler who likes good food, music and some adventures. I have also heard that southern hospitality is real and Nola’s citizens are probably among the friendliest, most welcoming people in the world. I hope one day when I win the lottery I can visit this mystical city because New Orleans welcomes everyone: the living, the dead and those souls in between.
