Tempting the Black Wolf by NJ Walters
5 stars
Tumblr media
We get the rest of legend, and it was a whopper! I loved how our characters knew what was expected of them, but thought themselves too smart and strong to give into it. I loved how they found that they were useless to resist, but discounted it to forces beyond their control. I loved that they finally figured it all out, and still, realized they need to be honest with themselves and each other. And of course, I loved that we got the full story on how and why the lone wolf legacy brought them all together, and will keep them safe and in love <3

For the last couple weeks I've been drawing logos / designs for local-ish (mostly NJ, some PA and NY) bands as warmups in the morning. Here's what I've come up with! Massive post below the break explaining each logo + where to find each band and listen to their music.
Tumblr media
Teenage Halloween- a staple of New Jersey basements for probably about a decade now and finally getting wider recognition in the last couple years. Pop punk / power pop with a killer horn section. First time I saw them was in New Brunswick playing with Walter Etc. and Blowout. They played a killer cover "Build Me Up Buttercup" and my wife got a black eye in the pit. Recommended tracks: "Brain Song," "666," "Clarity." Their first EP is on a separate bandcamp page btw, check it out here it's great.
Tumblr media
Sweet Pill - They will call themselves a Philly band but in my heart they'll always be from Glassboro. Definitely one of the more recognizable names on this list. Emo revival - early stuff is more twinkly, more recent stuff is heavier. All of it's great. Recommended tracks "Nephew," "High Hopes."
Tumblr media
Shark Club - Central Jersey's finest. I'm very biased because I actually know these dudes and they did the music for my wedding. Some of the best pop punk you'll hear and the nicest people you'll meet. Recommended tracks: "Game Theory," "Bill Murray," "Heavens to Betsy."
Tumblr media
Rest Ashore - My favorite band for the last (oh God I'm old now) eight years. From gut-wrenching emo ballads to virtuoso math-rock instrumentals they do it all. One time I got to sing vocals on "Lucy's Theme" at a house show- thank you Erica! Recommended tracks: "Hjarta," "Chinese Opera," "Devotion," "Soyuz Sweetheart." Too many bangers to name honestly, just deep dive their discography.
Tumblr media
Morus Alba - First band I ever went to see at a house show and still one of my absolute favorites. Their music feels like the bridge between the best pitchfork, /mu/ alt rock bands and high energy basement emo. I mean that as a compliment and I hope it comes off as one lol. I should note that since 2019 Morus Alba has morphed from a band into an experimental hip-hop project so later releases sound radically different and basically disconnected from the earlier stuff. Also my favorite release from them, Live at Isabelle's, has been scrubbed from the internet but if you'd like the files just email me. Recommended tracks: "Skyscraper," "Human Resources," "The Goodnight Waltz."
Tumblr media
Have a Good Season - another Jersey mainstay that's still going strong. Emo revival in their earlier releases, now with more 70s power pop influences in their newer stuff. See them live, they put on a fantastic show and usually play some great covers in addition to their original music. HaGS guys if you're reading this, please put your version of "Since You've Been Gone" online, I'm begging you. Recommended tracks: "Joseph / Shel Silverstein," (you have to listen to them together for the drop, so good) , "Gum, "Gleaux / Scab." Also, frontman Nic Palermo interviewed me once.
Tumblr media
Elephant Jake - If you see any of these bands live make it EJ, they put on such a damn good show. Electrifying indie punk from the Empire State. Recommended tracks: "F.D.C." "Sarah Moyer," "Goodness to Honest," and of course you gotta learn "Sebastien Bauer" for the singalongs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blind Lion - Sadly one of the greats that we lost along the way. Defunct since about 2017. I only got to see them once but it was a great performance. Alongside their own stuff they played some killer covers of "Bad Moon Rising" and "Moonage Daydream." I had trouble doing a logo design for them because I actually really like the composition, if not the "Ed Hardy-ness," of their existing logo so what you see here are two separate attempts, neither of which feels entirely satisfying to me. Frontperson Larry Flately currently plays in Nematode and also handled production of Bradley Gardens joke hiphop group The Breakfast Boiz under the moniker "DJ Ova EZ." Recommended tracks: "Brumous," "Dinner."
Tumblr media
Fighting Seasons - A band that I sadly found out about too late (via a sticker under the bridge in my town which has since been painted over). 2010s pop punk that packs a helluva punch, especially considering that I'm pretty sure the members were high schoolers for most of the band's existence. I think some members may have gone on to form Sawce (FFO Chon, Polyphia, that type of music) but I can't remember where I read/heard that so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Recommended tracks: "Fighting Seasons," "Oil on Canvas"
Tumblr media
Milkmen- Another fallen giant, officially disbanded in 2019. Like Morus Alba, they played the very first house show I attended and their few releases remain on constant rotation in my home. Used to put on a great show and were one of the bands I always thought would make it big until suddenly they weren't around anymore. Frontman Ben Thieberger contributed guitar and vocals to Covid quarantine project Kin if you're looking for a bit of an extra fix but beyond that I don't know what these guys are up to these days, sadly. Recommended tracks: "Ramus," "Johnny Dangerously," "how sieves catch breeze," "K.O.T.H."
Tumblr media
Stand and Wave - New York (now Philly) pop punkers delivering instant dopamine hits with every track. Another great live act, see them with EJ if you can! They often play shows together. Recommended tracks: "Convos," "Mrs. Dash," "Splashton Kutcher," "Michael Collins."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Chemical Romance - You know who they are. While I was drawing all these other logos I ran a poll on Patreon to decide which famous New Jersey band should also be graced with a drawing from me. MCR won the poll by a hefty margin so unfortunately you won't get to see me do an illegible black metal take on Hoboken's Yo La Tengo. I ended up doing two versions: the one with the halo is the first, the one with the bats was the second. I tried to do something kind of thin and elegant with the first one and I don't think it's terrible but I also wasn't quite satisfied with it. For the 2nd attempt I tried to lean into the kind of pulpy, almost horror punk aesthetic of early MCR and I think that one looks better even if it's less original.
Anyway if you took the time to read through all this, thank you very much! And please support these bands! Also If any of the links aren't working please let me know.

Tone tag masterlist!!!!! :]]]
I know we just posted, but the idea popped up and I had to post this before I forget
Here's a masterlist of tone tags and their meanings, along with examples :] Note that it's only the ones I know so far and please feel free to tell us if I missed anything!
Click the "Keep reading" for the masterlist <3
--------------------
/j - Joking - Used to indicate when the tone of text/speech is a joking one, or to indicate that something is a joke and/or someone is joking {Ex: "I lit the dog on fire again /j" "You're a damn fool timothy /j"}
/hj - Half-Joking - Used to indicate when the tone of text/speech is one that is half or partially joking, or to indicate that something is partially a joke or someone is partially joking {Ex: "My dog will bite you /hj" "Well then i guess i'm santa claus /hj"}
/hsrs - Half-Serious - Means the same thing as /hj, but usually has more serious undertones, or more on the serious side {Ex: "Aw darn it the cat broke another fine china /hsrs" "they have no idea what that is /hsrs"
/srs - Serious - Used to indicate when the tone of text/speech is serious, or that one is not joking, and that what is being discussed is not a joke {Ex: "My sister just ran outside to catch a worm /srs" "I lost my limited edition jesus christ plushie /srs"}
/pos - Positive - Used to indicate when the tone of text/speech is a positive one, that what is said is in a positive or non-insulting manner, or that something is positive and uplifting {Ex: "HE LOOKS LIKE A WORM /pos" "Jason just got like 6 dollars in xer bank account /pos"}
/neu - Neutral - Used to indicate when the tone of text/speech is a neutral one, that what is said is in neither a negative or positive manner, or that someone is neutral on a topic {Ex: "i think umber needs to get off the subreddit /neu" "Oh my god he has a baby face /neu"
/neg - Negative - Used to indicate when the tone of text/speech is a negative one, that what is said is in a negative or insulting manner, or that something is negative and gloomy {Ex: "Their haircut looks like walter white /neg" "THIS SODA TASTES LIKE ARTIFICIAL FLAVOURING /neg"}
/sar or /sarc - Sarcasm - Used to indicate when the tone or text/speech is a sarcastic one, that what is said is in a sarcastic manner, or that what is said is sarcasm {Ex: "i love being single /sar" "Yeah sure you totally dont like xim /sarc"}
/ref - Reference - Used to indicate that something is a reference to something else, like a show, movie, book, video game, or other {usually fictional} work {Ex: "Thats because ey have 70 alternate accounts /ref" "sorry my girlboss but your princess is in another castle /ref"
/lyr - Lyric{s} - Used to indicate that what was said are the lyrics of a particular song {Ex: "A PETTY LINE OF WHITE NOISE PACK UP YOUR BAGS AND THROW OUT THE TOYS /lyr" "i kissed a girl and i liked it the taste of her cherry chapstick /lyr"}
/p - Platonic - Used to indicate when something that can be interpreted as romantic is platonic and not with romantic tone or gesture, or to indicate that something is platonic {Ex: "god i love you so much /p" "Yeah rai're my damn wife /p"
Thats all of them for now :] I know I definitely missed some, and I suggest doing your own research into tone tags and tone tag carrds and these can also be very helpful {Also, tone tags are also sometimes called "Tone indicators" if that helps at all}
Edit: An anon sent a large list of tone tags to add to the masterlist so I'm putting them here! {Ty, anon!} {I'm also copypasting them and not adding descriptions because I'm lazy but I'll probably get to it later(Hopefully-)}

Coming Home by NJ Walters
5 stars
Tumblr media
I really liked this couple! He’s back in town and how can you resist a damaged hero? There were some sparks before he left, but with her being his best friend’s little sister, well, we know how that goes. It may be short, but it doesn’t skimp on heat or emotion <3

ok here’s how they can make yellowjackets better……first of all it should’ve been adult travis on the plane with nat. javi’s appearance was good but it should’ve been travis with her at the very end, not teen lottie. why was teen lottie there
second of all misty should get to kill walter. why? because i think he’s annoying and i want him gone. do i care how they do it? yes. it should be misty killing him after he keeps like writing her off. so she goes i bet i could be the better serial killer than you :) and he goes haha you’re so funny misty and then she just 🔪 hits him with the knife. where is the misty quigley of f-sharp who told an old lady “don’t fuck with me” give her back
ok i do want them to keep jeff around. but. i want him to be less comic relief and more like, a litmus test? for the audience. maybe? kind of like? the voice of reason? not a goody two shoes necessarily but more like the straight man to shauna et al. idk i havent watched episodes 5-8
callie. callie callie callie. i don’t want her to be just like her mom—i think it would be better for the story if she turns out to not be like shauna. like. obviously she’s gonna be traumatized and shauna needs to explain a lot of stuff to her. but i think it would work well if the writers went in the direction of “shauna tried really hard to protect her daughter and it paid off”. the woods followed shauna home and wanted to infect her daughter and shauna held a knife to its throat and said fuck off.
in season 3 we need more scenes showing the team at wiskayok before the crash. part of why s2 felt so badly paced was because they had a little bit of plot that they stretched really thin. adding in a couple edpisodes showing the team pre-crash would 1) help to pad out and insulate the rest of the story better 2) help give the audience a better insight into the dynamics between everyone. it would also allow for the return of ella purnell and jane widdop, and nuha jess izman
going off of that, i wish they’d do an episode focused on everyone’s life after they were rescued. sure, we got glimpses of it with lottie, but where did everyone else go? who went to shauna and jeff’s wedding? how did taissa return to NJ? where did misty go to nursing school?
n e ways these are all just thots. i really do hope season 3 is better, I am looking forward to it

Spiral Drill Market to Scale New Heights as Market Players Focus on Innovations 2024 – 2030
Drill bits are cutting tools used to cut and remove material to form holes, nearly always of circular cross-sectional. Drill bits are available in several sizes and shapes and might produce totally different sorts of holes in many alternative materials. The spiral within the bit controls the speed of chip removal. a fast spiral bit is employed in high feed rate applications underneath low spindle speeds, wherever removal of an outsized volume of chips is needed. Different Application in Material Removal from Household application to an industrial one.

Southern California Home Builders (Photo taken by Rachel Hughes in 2023 around Silver Lake in Los Angeles, CA)
They owned property in Los Angeles, El Cajon, San Diego, and Tulare County.
Apparently this legal understanding stems from the California appeals court case Southern California Home Builders v Young: "the right of the corporation to recover from those to whom corporate assets may have been unlawfully transferred does not affect the statutory liability of the directors who made the unlawful distribution, unless the corporation, in the exercise of the first right, causes the replacement, in whole or in part, of what was taken from the corporation. In that event the liability of the directors would be diminished proportionately or expunged, since the corporation would be entitled to what was taken and no more. "
Tumblr media
In 1913, they placed an advertisement selling shares of the business in the Santa Fe New Mexican (Santa Fe New Mexican, January 28, 1913, pg. 3, New Mexican Printing Company, accessed via the University of New Mexico UNM Digital Repository).
Tumblr media
This photo, entitled "Building a new bungalow" is from the Herald Examiner Collection held by the Los Angeles Public Library. It shows the "construction of one of five new bungalows built in one week on Eighty-third Street, by the Southern California Home Builders."
Tumblr media
As of 1917, the Southern California Home Builders had their headquarters at 321 Walter P. Story building, at the southwest corner of Broadway and Sixth streets (610 N. Broadway) in downtown Los Angeles. They only paid $50/month for rent, which also included the use of the telephone and the "valuable services from an experienced manager, Sydney B. Brown" (born in Carthage, Missouri on January 15, 1884). Pretty crazy that would be included, so I feel like I must not be understanding correctly. He collected rents, handled insurance, kept houses in good condition for rental or sale, and handled the "payment of taxes, assessments on properties, interest payments on mortgages, renewals of mortgages and collection of payments on trust deeds and other collections." Brown was also an agent for so many other companies in the Story building, including New Jersey Insurance Co of Newark, NJ; British & Federal Fire Underwriters of Norwich, England; Southwest Farming Co.; Repubilc Casualty Company of Pittsburg. It seems Brown ran all of these operations out of his own company, Sydney B Brown Co. with several employees: a telephone operator (Laura V Small, who lived on Laurel Canyon), a secretary (Mrs. Minnie T Leavitt, who lived on N Normandie Ave.), and someone else who worked in the insurance department (Lolah Boal of Alhambra). While the company's phone number was "Bway 24," his home phone number was 10783 (Los Angeles Director Co's Los Angeles City Directory, The Los Angeles Director Company, Los Angeles, CA, 1921, accessed via the Los Angeles Public Library).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They "closed a deal whereby a nine-room residence at 1527 Hayworth avenue, in Hollywood, was sold... to Margaret Robinson. Sydney B. Brown had charge of the deal." However, when they rented Burbank Hall to hold an annual meeting, they couldn't because the secretary had the flu and "there was not sufficient stock represented." At that time, the president of the company was named Charles A. Sessions, McCullough Graydon was VP, M. T. Leavitt was secretary, R. N. Earl was treasurer, and E. Fossler was director. Later that year, the company had an "assessment sale" and apparently it "showed the largest percentage that had ever been paid at any stock sale... The company is now considering the increasing of rentals" - I have no idea what that means. Nonetheless, I know the business wasn't doing too well in 1919. It was already "the second time that most of this corporation's assets were wiped out."
Quick interlude from some information about Sessions. He was born in 1843 in Michigan and died in 1933; he is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA (Findagrave.com). He was married to Mary Ellen Jay and had a son named Horace, who was a Private (though I don't know in what).
Another tangential person is Thomas Chalmers Vint. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1894 but had moved to Los Angeles, CA by the time he attended high school. He went to UC Berkeley and graduated with a BS in Landscape Architecture in 1920. He had also spent a semester at the Ecole des Beaux Arts at the University of Lyon, France and studied city planning at UCLA in 1921. He eventually had a four-decade career with the National Park Service! But, while in school, so I assume around the same time as the above folks where involved, he worked for A. S. Falconer, who designed bungalows for our company of focus! He had also worked as an assistant to Lloyd Wright.
The below are advertisements they took out, which show they both built homes but also underwrote insurance policies for fire and automobile. You'll also see their logo which is in their contractor stamp - rare to see a logo like this in a stamp!

Another fun find is this war bonds advertisement, which was partially paid for by Southern California Home Builders.
I don't know what ended up happening to the company. But many decades later there was a (seemingly unrelated) Southern California Home Builders Association.
