Messier 63 or M63, also known as NGC 5055 or the seldom-used Sunflower Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy in the northern constellation of Canes Venatici with approximately 400 billion stars. M63 was first discovered by the French astronomer Pierre Méchain, then later verified by his colleague Charles Messier on June 14, 1779. The galaxy became listed as object 63 in the Messier Catalogue. In the mid-19th century, Anglo-Irish astronomer Lord Rosse identified spiral structures within the galaxy, making this one of the first galaxies in which such structure was identified.

The shape or morphology of this galaxy has a classification of SAbc, indicating a spiral form with no central bar feature (SA) and moderate to loosely wound arms (bc). There is a general lack of large-scale continuous spiral structure in visible light, so it is considered a flocculent galaxy. However, when observed in the near infrared, a symmetric, two-arm structure is seen. Each arm wraps 150° around the galaxy and extends out to 13,000 light-years (4,000 parsecs) from the nucleus.

M63 is a weakly active galaxy with a LINER nucleus – short for 'low-ionization nuclear emission-line region'. This displays as an unresolved source at the galactic nucleus that is cloaked in a diffuse emission. The latter is extended along a position angle of 110° relative to the north celestial pole, and both soft X-rays and hydrogen (H-alpha) emission can be observed coming from along nearly the same direction. The existence of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the nucleus is uncertain; if it does exist, then the mass is estimated as (8.5±1.9)×108 M☉, or around 850 million times the mass of the Sun.

Radio observations at the 21-cm hydrogen line show the gaseous disk of M63 extends outward to a radius of 130,000 light-years (40 kiloparsecs), well past the bright optical disk. This gas shows a symmetrical form that is warped in a pronounced manner, starting at a radius of 33,000 light-years (10 kiloparsecs). The form suggests a dark matter halo that is offset with respect to the inner region. The reason for the warp is unclear, but the position angle points toward the smaller companion galaxy, UGC 8313.

The distance to M63, based upon the luminosity-distance measurement is 29,300,000 light-years (8.99 megaparsecs). The radial velocity relative to the Local Group yields an estimate of 15,200,000 light-years (4.65 megaparsecs). Estimates based on the Tully–Fisher relation range over 16,000,000–34,000,000 light-years (5.0–10.3 megaparsecs). The tip of the red-giant branch technique gives a distance of 28,930,000 ± 950,000 light-years (8.87 ± 0.29 megaparsecs). M63 is part of the M51 Group, a group of galaxies that also includes M51 (the 'Whirlpool Galaxy').

In 1971, a supernova with a magnitude of 11.8 appeared in one of the arms. It was discovered on May 24 and reached peak light around May 26. The spectrum of this, SN 1971 I, is consistent with a supernova of type I. However, the spectroscopic behavior appeared anomalous.

Perfect Spiral Overlaid With Milky Way Gems

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has produced this finely detailed image of the beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 6384. This galaxy lies in the constellation of Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer), not far from the centre of the Milky Way on the sky. The positioning of NGC 6384 means that we have to peer at it past many dazzling foreground Milky Way stars that are scattered across this image.

In 1971, one member of NGC 6384 stood out against these bright foreground stars when one of its stars exploded as a supernova. This was a Type Ia supernova, which occurs when a compact star that has ceased fusion in its core, called a white dwarf, increases its mass beyond a critical limit by gobbling up matter from a companion star. A runaway nuclear explosion then makes the star suddenly as bright as a whole galaxy.

While many stars have already come to the ends of their lives in NGC 6384, in the centre, star formation is being fuelled by the galaxy’s bar structure; astronomers think such galactic bars funnel gas inwards, where it accumulates to form new stars.

This picture was created from images take with the Wide Field Channel of Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys. An image taken through a blue filter (F435W, coloured blue) was combined with an image taken through a near-infrared filter (F814W, coloured red). The total exposure times were 1050 s through each filter and the field of view is about 3 x 1.5 arcminutes.

Bowers on collecting: Among my favorites — modern dollars

I enjoy modern coins and often order new items of interest from the Mint. Others I buy in the marketplace. A few years ago I decided to build a full set of modern dollars from the 1971 Eisenhower to date. I was present at the creation of the Ike motif, so to speak. Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro was a fine friend, and I discussed the designs and other aspects with him.

The basic idea of the Treasury Department was to issue a dollar coin to be used in everyday commerce, and to last perhaps 20 or 30 years, to replace dollar bills which often become soiled within two years. A peripheral value was to provide coins for use on gaming tables in Las Vegas and elsewhere. Back in 1971 “elsewhere” usually meant Nevada. Today in 2018 one can hardly throw a copy of the Red Book without hitting a casino.

However, if you are looking for a text which focuses more on modern United States dollar coins, then A Guide Book of Modern United States Dollar Coins would be a great start. The Ikes did see use in Las Vegas but were not wildly popular. By 1971 plastic chips were the order of the day.

A full set of Ike dates and mint marks from 1971 to the last issue, 1978, took me about a month to build. I wanted circulation strikes as well as Proofs, and also one each of the minute die changes of the early years, such as details of the Moon.

Then came the Susan B. Anthony dollars 1979 to 1981 plus, surprise!—a tag along issue in 1979. This was another Frank Gasparro design—not per his wishes or those of the numismatic community. He and most of the rest of us hoped for a Liberty Cap motif reflective of the copper cent and half cents of the 1790s, a return to the classics. However, political correctness reared its head in Congress, and suffragette Susan B. Anthony was mandated.

When I assembled my set a few years ago these were very easy to find in a combination of high grade and nice appearance. In fact, if modern dollars appeal to you, building a set of “Susies” is a good way to go. While some people want MS-70 and Proof-70 coins in certified holders, some of which are expensive, unless you are building a PCGS or NGC Registry Set you will be very pleased with just about any brilliant Proof, as nearly all are Gems. In fact, one in just Proof-65 would be a rarity! Mint State coins take a bit more care, but MS-65 and 66 coins are inexpensive and can be hand-picked for beauty.

The Susies did not gain much traction as a replacement for the dollar bill. Hope springs eternal, and the Treasury did not give up. Next came the Sacagawea dollars—fun to collect and one of my all-time favorite series. It was hoped that these “golden dollars,” made in manganese-bronze, would finally catch on.

History of Oil and Gas in Nigeria

The early history (1908 - 1960) - The history of oil exploration in Nigeria dates back to 1908 when Nigerian Bitumen Corporation conducted exploratory work in the country; however, the firm left the country at the onset of World War I. Thereafter, license was given to D'Arcy Exploration Company and Whitehall Petroleum. However, both companies did not find oil of commercial value and returned their licenses. In 1923 new license covering 357,000 sq. miles was given to a new firm called Shell D'arcy Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria. The new firm was a consortium of Shell and British Petroleum (then known as Anglo-Iranian). The company began exploratory work in 1937. The consortium was granted license to explore oil all over the territory of Nigeria but in 1951 and then between 1955 and 1957, the acreage allotted to the company in the original license was reduced. Drilling activities started in 1951 and the first test well was drilled in Owerri area. Shell-BP in the pursuit of commercially available petroleum found oil in Oloibiri, Nigeria in 1956 and came on stream producing 5,100 bpd. Production of crude oil began in 1957 and in 1960, a total of 847,000 tonnes of crude oil was exported.

1938: Shell D' Arcy granted Exploration license to prospect for oil throughout Nigeria.

1955: Mobil Oil Corporation started operations in Nigeria.

1956: First successful well drilled at Oloibiri by Shell D'Arcy

1956: Changed name to Shell-BP Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited.

1958: First shipment of oil from Nigeria.

1960: Other non-British firms were granted license to explore for oil like Tenneco

The Mid History (1961 - 1990) - at this period, Nigeria was just understanding its latest grounds as an oil exporter and developing its export market. It was during this time that commercial exploitation of the country's reserves began with the Nigerian Government introducing its first regulations governing the taxation of oil industry profits in which the profits were to be shared 50-50 between the government and the oil companies. By the later part of the 1960s, the Nigerian Government considered ways to utilize the resource being exploited by the western countries to develop the country and with this thought formulated its first agreement for taking equity in one of the producing companies, the Nigerian Agip Oil Company, jointly owned by Agip of Italy and Phillips of the United States. The option to take up an equity stake-in effect the first step toward the creation of the NNPC-was not, however, exercised until April 1971. 1961: Shell's Bonny Terminal was commissioned; Texaco Overseas started operations in Nigeria.

1962: Elf started operations in Nigeria. (As Safrap), Nigeria Agip Oil Company started operations in Nigeria

1963: Elf discovered Obagi field and Ubata gas field, Gulf's first production

1965: Agip found its first oil at Ebocha, Phillips Oil Company started operations in then Bendel State

1966: Elf started production in Rivers State with 12,000 b/d

1967: Phillips drilled its first well (Dry) at Osari -I, Phillips first oil discovery at Gilli-Gilli -I

1968: Mobil Producing Nigeria Limited) was formed, Gulf's Terminal at Escravos was commissioned

1970: Mobil started production from 4 wells at Idoho Field, Agip started production, Department of Petroleum Resources Inspectorate started.

1971: Shell's Forcados Terminal Commissioned, Mobil's terminal at Qua Iboe commissioned

1973: First Participation Agreement; Federal Government acquires 35% shares in the Oil Companies, Ashland started PSC with then NNOC (NNPC), Pan Ocean Corporation drilled its first discovery well at Ogharefe -I

1974: Second Participation Agreement, Federal Government increases equity to 55%, Elf formally changed its name from "Safrap", Ashland's first oil discovery at Ossu -I

1975: First Oil lifting from Brass Terminal by Agip, DPR upgraded to Ministry of Petroleum Resources

1976: MPE renamed Ministry of Petroleum Resources (MPR), Pan Ocean commenced production via Shell-BP's pipeline at a rate of 10,800 b/d

1977: Government established Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) by Decree 33, (NNOC & MPR extinguished).

1979: Third Participation Agreement (throughout NNPC) increases equity to 60%, Fourth Participation Agreement; BP's shareholding nationalized, leaving NNPC with 80% equity and Shell 20% in the joint Venture, Changed name to Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC)

1984: Agreement consolidating NNPC/Shel1 joint Venture.

1986: Signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

1988: Formation of 12 strategic business units, covering the entire spectrum of oil industry operations: Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Nigerian Gas Company (NGC), Products and Pipelines Marketing Company (PPMC), Integrated Data Services Limited (IDSL), National Engineering and Technical Company Limited (NETCO),Hydrocarbon Services Nigeria Limited (HYSON), Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Co. Limited (WRPC), Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Co. Limited (KRPC), Port Harcourt Refining Co. Limited (PHRC), NNPC Retail, Duke Oil

1989: Fifth Participation Agreement; (NNPC=60%, Shell = 30%, Elf=5%, Agip=5%).

1991: Signing of Memorandum of Understanding & joint Venture Operating Agreement (JOA)

1993: Production Sharing Contracts signed -SNEPCO, Sixth Participation Agreement; (NNPC=55%, Shell=30%, Elf= 10%, Agip=5%), the coming on-stream of Elf's Odudu blend, offshore OML 100.

1995: SNEPCO starts drilling first Exploration well, NLNG's Final Investment Decision taken

1999: NLNG's First shipment of Gas out of Bonny Terminal.

2000: NPDC/NAOC Service Contract signed

2001: Production of Okono offshore field.

2002: New PSCs agreement signed, Liberalization of the downstream oil sector, NNPC commences retail outlet scheme.
