since this post blew up, i've been wanting to do an addition with all of the recommendations from the comments and tags. but there's a lot of them. some people might be crazy enough to sit down and seriously put them all in one post with descriptions. those people are honestly sick in the head.
anyway, here's all of the recommendations from the reblogs. not all of them are text-based, but it's a great mixture of styles. also don't forget the links in the second paragraph of the OP which will take you to FMHY where there are a bunch more games listed.

corru.observer - science fiction adventure web game.

r/incremental_games - reddit community for incremental games.
r/WebGames - reddit community for web games in general.
thank you to everyone who contributed and the creators. please be sure to show them some love where possible.
i think the near-extinction of people making fun, deep and/or unique interactive text-based browser games, projects and stories is catastrophic to the internet. i'm talking pre-itch.io era, nothing against it.
there are a lot of fun ones listed here and here but for the most part, they were made years ago and are now a dying breed. i get why. there's no money in it. factoring in the cost of web hosting and servers, it probably costs money. it's just sad that it's a dying art form.
anyway, here's some of my favorite browser-based interactive projects and games, if you're into that kind of thing. 90% of them are on the lists that i linked above.
A Better World - create an alternate history timeline
Alter Ego - abandonware birth-to-death life simulator game
Seedship - text-based game about colonizing a new planet
Sandboxels or ThisIsSand - free-falling sand physics games
Little Alchemy 2 - combine various elements to make new ones
Infinite Craft - kind of the same as Little Alchemy
ZenGM - simulate sports
Tamajoji - browser-based tamagotchi
IFDB - interactive fiction database (text adventure games)
Written Realms - more text adventure games with a user interface
The Cafe & Diner - mystery game
The New Campaign Trail - US presidential campaign game
Money Simulator - simulate financial decisions
Genesis - text-based adventure/fantasy game
Level 13 - text-based science fiction adventure game
Miniconomy - player driven economy game
Checkbox Olympics - games involving clicking checkboxes
BrantSteele.net - game show and Hunger Games simulators
Murder Games - fight to the death simulator by Orteil
Cookie Clicker - different but felt weird not including it. by Orteil.
if you're ever thinking about making a niche project that only a select number of individuals will be nerdy enough to enjoy, keep in mind i've been playing some of these games off and on for 20~ years (Alter Ego, for example). quite literally a lifetime of replayability.

Hey I saw a reblog of this answer of yours to an ask and I want to know how you'll think this would change, or rather how c!Techno's approach to anarchy (and if we wanna start comparing, c!Quackity's partiality to governance-based structures) would change now that the ban on farms has been lifted?
I feel like there are new implications to consider as this ban lift would influence any interested members of the server to create farms for resources and attain their previously non-existent material power through there. How would the big ideologically charged characters of particular influence on the servent present (and maybe past) go about their actions because of that new change?
okay big disclaimer here before i say anything else:
*i have no idea what the point of farms are in minecraft and at this point i'm too afraid to ask*
so with my extremely minimal understanding of farms but my fairly in-depth understanding of anarchy and of survival minecraft when played by grinding based on cc!techno's style, here's my kind of thought on the whole farm thing.
1.) what will farms actually change? okay, so we've established that i don't know what farms are for, but i do have a server where farms are present. there's a gold farm and a sugar cane farm and a squid farm and i think one other? and i use a lot of gold! i made my gingko tree out of raw gold blocks. i also use a lot of sugar cane as i love collecting books.
i don't personally use the farms but i still have plenty of resources and i'm reasonably confident in saying that no one is going to be able to take away my ability to get more resources.
because that's kinda the crux of it, you know? capitalism isn't just about having money or wealth, what it's really about is the exploitation and the inequality that comes from that exploitation and the inability for people to get out of it. and if farms in minecraft would cause that sort of inequality, then i think it would require a change in actions or more thought at least on c!techno's end. but i don't know if that actually applies because people would still be able to gather food and other resources.
2.) uh-oh! complex morality questions? in my minecraft mechanics? okay here's the thing. there are so many issues with the sheer mechanics of minecraft from a morality stand-point. i mean, if piglins are people with a culture and language, then gold farms are like.... so immoral. enough that i actually considered banning them on my server but i realized that most people wouldn't view it that way.
and that's the thing! where do we draw the line? especially when it comes to the RP aspect. because there's mechanics that require things like killing animals which would go against general characterization of the characters. or things like enderman. so if they're all people, what does killing them mean?
so baked-in game mechanics are kinda questionable. like trust me, i used to be in a large anarchist gaming group and we had biweekly debates on the morality of minecraft and farming mechanics and while i think that could be a worthwhile question, i don't think it's one i really want to tackle in the context of the dsmp because there's so much that can change from one moment to another. a horse can be an extremely important animal/pet or a mob that you kill because breeding mechanics in minecraft are awful, please gods i tried to set them all free but it was too much.
where you can apply the sort of in-world rp morality to things like exile or the prison because those are specifically aimed at characters and specifically have a weight in the story. so....
3.) minecraft mechanics are out, in-world power structures are in!
so, where i end up on the whole farm thing is 'the power that someone has in the context of the rp world is more important than the actual resources they have'.
which means that if c!quackity begins to use the resources he acquires through farms (or any other method) to do things like what the butcher army did - putting phil under house arrest, tubbo almost killing him, executing techno without a trial - then that's something c!techno would have to act on. the same applies to anyone who decides to use the resources gained through that method for something similar.
i think my point is that unless someone is applying the mechanics of minecraft to their in-world power and how they use that against the rest of the server, i can't see the introduction of farms as something that's going to have drastic changes to the political or moral ideology of the server. i mean, theoretically snowchester has one of the most powerful weapons on the server, but c!techno's approach to that was to look at the in-world motivations and actions of c!tubbo.
regardless, i'm just excited to see what they're all going to do with the possibilities it opens up!

Hi! I’m Liz, and I’m looking for more roleplay partners! First, here are the “requirements”
• 18+ muns only. I often like to include nsfw themes, so I’m only comfortable writing with adults
• 3rd Person Literate Style Only. I’d consider myself literate to advanced literate and I’m looking for similar partners.

• Currently I am NOT looking to double. I want to be a little selfish and focus only on my plots. If you will only play a wanted opposite of mine on the condition that I double, let me know and perhaps we could work something out depending on if I like your plot ideas. Again, I realize this is selfish but I prefer to play ocs against canons and don’t really enjoy writing canon characters.
• If you are at all interested in playing a fandom canon character against my oc, dm me for plot ideas specific to that character as well as more information on my ocs from that universe

(So here’s the pan-romantic love poem I wrote. It’s really long so put under a read more. You are welcome to reblog this if you want.)
The Rarest Kinds of Love: A Field Guide
By Mod Poss ( @theprofessionalpromptmaker )
He was my first love, His love was the whispers of the wind in enchanted forests, He shimmered in sunlight and glowed in the dark. His love was unicorn love: The noble kind. He was my loyal friend With a touch of magic in every motion, A majestic way he glided across the ground, A hint of shyness in his posture. Lovers such as him require a sweet and gentle hand, And a deep respect for magic and secrets. Lovers like him can be found in hidden valleys, You just need to know how to find them to glimpse him.
She was my preteen crush, Her love was the crashing of waves on rocky beaches, She was enchanting on land and gorgeous beneath the surface. Her love was mermaid love: The beautiful kind. She was my favorite singer With melodies bursting with colors in every note, A playful lilt in her tunes, A carefree essence imbued her. Lovers such as her require a fun-loving and childish spirit, And an ability to know when to swim with the current or against it. Lovers like her can be found in brightly painted coral reefs, You will need to befriend the fish to impress her.
They were my teenage heartthrob, Their love was the fairy rings found in wild forests, They glittered when they danced and chimed when they laughed. Their love was fairy love: The mischievous kind. They were my partner in crime With hands ready to help or hinder A devil may care view on life and death, A wiliness in their eyes. Lovers such as them require a mind striving for entertainment, And a belief that morals and rules get in the way of true fun. Lovers like them can be found in places nature has claimed, You will need to be tricky to lure and catch them.
She was my high school sweetheart, Her love was the embers rising from volcanoes, She walked among flames and breathed in smoke. Her love was dragon love: The regal kind. She was my protective queen With blazing passion in her words, A powerful and imposing presence, A sense of royalty in her gait. Lovers such as her require a heart of diamond, And the ideology that everything has worth. Lovers like her can be found on scorched mountain tops, You just need to withstand the heat to endure her.
They were my college date, Their love was the maze of letters in a crossword puzzle, Their smile was a sandstorm and they grinned like a Cheshire. Their love was sphinx love: The clever kind. They were my brilliant tutor With a brain made for mind games and riddles, A smart remark always at the ready, A cunning strategy for every problem. Lovers such as them require a quick and sharp tongue, And a gift for sparring in battles of wits. Lovers like them can be found taking cat naps on pyramids, You will need to study the dunes to find them.
He was my grad school partner, His love was the depths of Mariana trench, He traveled in hurricanes and spoke with giant squids. His love was kraken love: The mysterious kind. He was my wise companion, With feelings as deep as Europa’s oceans, A knowledge not yet discovered, A sunken wisdom in the shipwrecks on the sea floor. Lovers such as him require a curious and emotional soul, A knowledge that fear holds us back from discovery. Lovers like him can be found in the darkest depths, You will need to sink into the unknown to reach him.
She was my fiancÊe, Her love was the history lost to time, She twirled in rituals and responded in hymns. Her love was goddess love: The primordial kind. She was my knowing guide With a universal perspective on reality, An observational outlook on humanity, An inspiration for people to look up to and fear. Lovers like her require an imaginative and impartial gaze, An understanding that some things are unknowable in their ancientness. Lovers like her can be found in places of worship and at home, You will need to have faith to touch her.

5 Games to Inspire Calm Chiara Scotellaro, The Millennial Patient
Are you looking for an activity to help you achieve calmness in your day? Something that you can incorporate into your self-care routine which is always within reach?
One of my favourite methods of bringing calmness into my day is through games and apps, which are a readily accessible solution as I always have my phone within arms reach. I regularly use games and apps as part of my self care and mindfulness routine. Below the cut are 5 games that help me relax and bring me tranquility if I’ve been feeling stressed or restless.
Tumblr media
[Image: a modern stylized landscape of blue mountains against a starry sky. “Monument Valley” is displayed across the top of the image, and a white figure in pointed hat and dress stands atop a pedestal.]
Monument Valley
Monument Valley is a beautifully designed atmospheric puzzle game developed by Ustwo Games. The gameplay consists of helping princess Ida through an Escheresque maze which shifts and morphs around her. And thanks to its beautiful artwork, playing Monument is like walking through my favourite drawings.
Puzzle games normally chew up my spoons, so the best part of this game is that the less I try to think of a solution, the more likely I am to solve the puzzle. Playing Monument Valley is more about clearing my mind and exploring. It’s perfect for when I’m tired but want to do something a bit more engaging than watch tv.
This is a great puzzle game if you have cognitive fatigue and a fun approach to mindfulness.

[Image: a silhouette of a small, thin tree on uneven terrain, all black against a beige sky with a bright red moon peeking down from the top. “prune” is written between tree and moon.]
Prune
Prune is a pretty and wonderfully minimalistic game by Joel McDonald where you cultivate a tree to grow in certain directions so it can reach the light. You do this by pruning branches with a swipe of your finger; then you watch it grow in hopes it will flourish in the light of the sun.
I love this game because I love bonsai, but the real thing never lasts long in my care. This game is my pocket bonsai and my alternative to pottering in the garden for relaxation. Just like Monument Valley, it promotes exploration and helps clear my mind. There is no need for overthinking—if I just play and vary my approaches, the solution will come.
This game is perfect for when you just want a few minutes of quiet, and it’s ideal for waiting rooms at the doctor's office!

[Image: an undersea scape with schools of fish in the background. A diver is swimming downward and touching a reflection of themself in what appears to be the top of a (second) body of water. “Abzû” is displayed in thin letters at the top.]
AbzĂť
AbzĂť is described as an adventure art video game developed by Giant Squid Studios. However, for me, AbzĂť is more of an experience than a game.
In Abzû, you are a diver exploring the ocean and restoring life through the use of magical springs. I get to explore various underwater environments, swim with whales, ride a turtle, or just meditate on a rocky outcrop and watch the aquatic life swim around me. It’s quite short, and the puzzles may seem simple, but it just feels amazing to play. I only wish I could play the VR version next time.
This game really fills my need for new experiences when I’ve been housebound for too long. It’s the next best thing to visiting the aquarium and the closest thing to going diving as I can get at the moment. I just love love love this game!
AbzĂť on Steam
Tumblr media
[Image: on a background of mountains and a night sky, a logo with a band of yellow at the top and four icons: a cross, a sword, a person, and a dollar sign. “Reigns” is displayed below this in gray, angular block letters.]
Reigns
Reigns is a text-based game developed by Devolver Digital in which you play the role of a medieval monarch. Gameplay is super simple and consists of storyline cards which ask you to decide between two choices. You make your decision by either swiping left or right (sound familiar? 😉). The choices you make will determine the fate of your monarchy as well as those you rule. You play through many reigns—some spanning decades, others barely lasting a day.
Unlike the other games in this list, the theme of this game isn't the calming element here, in fact, this game has a lot of dark humour in it. For me, the calming aspect here is the gameplay, it brings me calm through distraction. What I like most about Reigns is that gameplay is very short, your monarch's reign can often last only a minute or two. It also doesn't require much concentration or logic because there's no way of predicting the outcomes of your choices.
For me, Reigns is a brain fog friendly alternative to puzzle games and another great game to play in waiting rooms. I just swipe left or right and await the next twist in the story.
Reigns on  iTunes Reigns on Google Play Reigns on Steam
Tumblr media
[Image: “Magic Piano” written in sky blue and black bubble letters against a background of a keyboard, clouds, and abstract green lights.]
Magic Piano
Magic Piano by Smule allows you to play your favourite piano music on your phone or tablet. Music is one of the most effective ways for me to find calmness and joy. And playing the music yourself, just like dancing or singing, elevates the whole experience. Magic Piano makes playing music accessible by showing me the notes to play.
Despite having no musical ability and limited dexterity in my fingers, I can still play along with my favourite songs on my tablet. I can also change the difficulty depending on the stiffness of my hands. Much like Guitar Hero, it allows me to live out my rockstar fantasies despite my complete lack of skill. My favourite thing to do at the end of the day is play Moonlight Sonata to slow things right down.
Word of warning with this game: I started experiencing vertigo a while ago, and the scrolling colours began to trigger headaches. I’ve had to stop playing it as a result. If you have similar problems, you might want to give this one a pass.
Magic Piano on  iTunes Magic Piano on Google Play
These games are a regular part of my wind-down time and have provided me with varied options to creating calm in my day. Just like music, a cup of tea, or a warm bath they help me transition from busyness to stillness. They provide me with just enough escapism to help me let go of the day's problems and get into a different mindscape, but are not so utterly engrossing that I lose hours to gameplay.
If you have games or apps that help you achieve calmness, then please feel welcome to share your recommendations in the comments or via a reblog!
