welcome to the thirty-fifth fic rec friday! where, on friday, i rec five of my favourite fics.

1. Send Down the Rain by @azapofinspiration

Lance missed rain. As much as he missed his family and his home, he missed rain almost as much.

However, rain has to exist somewhere out in the universe, right? Even if he can't go home, Lance should be able to feel rain and soak it.

Right?

Five times Lance tried to find rain and the one time he did

lance should have gotten the rain in canon. he needed that. and god did azap fucking deliver!! this fic is sweet and this fic is sad and this fic is melancholy and this fic makes you want to throw up and this fic makes you feel alive. i fckn love this fic

2. Brawler by @admiralcanthackett [GORE WARNING]

I have no summary for this beyond Lance and Keith get ambushed and Lance is a determined motherfucker who fights dirty. Keith is mildly turned on and largely impressed.

you ever want to see lance, feral, thinking only of protecting his family, rip someone’s throat out with his teeth? no? well, i didnt either, but it turns out that i needed to read it, so. and just to clarify this series isnt just lance going batshit insane, although there is plenty of that, it also has some tender klance gong over trauma so thats fun

3. nobody has to know (nobody but me) by xeah

Lance has a secret, and he’s taking it to the grave –except, he didn’t think the ‘taking it to the grave’ bit would happen quite so soon.

When the team head planetside on a diplomatic mission, Lance can’t decide if he’s ecstatic about it, or about to endure an intense bout of homesickness. Sure, the planet looks cool, the aliens themselves are pretty chill considering they’ve singlehandedly fended off Galra attacks up until now. But thanks to Pidge making the team clocks that run on Earth time, Lance knows that it’s almost his nineteenth birthday.

Yeah, he’s gonna go with the homesickness.

Unfortunately for him, the aliens they visit have two distinct qualities that, in any other circumstance, Lance would find cool; the ability to sense emotions, and the complete inability to keep secrets. That extends to their allies, as well.

He probably would have continued thinking those were pretty amazing skills –until the aliens sense negative emotions between the Paladins, and demand that to secure an alliance, the team must heal the dissent brewing in the fine cracks between each other thanks to the secrets they’re keeping, no matter how trivial.

Yeah. Homesickness probably wasn’t the right way to go.

okay, full disclaimer, this series isnt finished and i doubt it ever will be. HOWEVER. this fic is, and this fic is fucking stellar. magical realism has always been a fave of mine, and of course add vld and klance to that and ill always go feral. if you want to see amazing mcclain family backstory and tension so thick you could gnaw on it, swallow the L and read this fic you’ll only be a litle devastated that you won’t see how the series ends

4. Bruises by @admiralcanthackett

Lance is cornered by a Galra, cut off from the rest of his team. When he hears their disparaging comments, instead of asking for help when he can, he hides how hurt he is. He doesn't want them to think he's anymore useless than he already is.

you can tell that the author was mad when fae wrote this and honestly? yeah. yeah, sometimes u just have to be mad. sometimes thinks go to shit and its everyone’s fault and your pain becomes physical and you just have to grit your teeth and tell everyone to go fuck themselves. thats what lance goes thru here

5. Hybrid by @admiralcanthackett

Lance overhears one of the aliens insulting Keith after a successful mission and loses his temper.

yes another admiral fic but let me live i have always been obsessed with these fics and there are just so MANY of them okay. there will be more. but i like this one bc who doesn tlike protective lance??? who doesnt like keith realising that he’s worthy of being defended??? like cmon now

Just wanted to ramble a bit, animals are wonderful, but they also can make you so sad. Putting under a read more, so I don't make people sad unless they're okay with it.

Just lost another of my girls today, Skarm. What is it with my chickens? The first, Pidge, had to be put down a few years ago on my best friend's birthday. The second, Talon, died a couple of days before my birthday this year. And now Skarm has gone on my niece's and Star's birthday. Now I'm nervous Blaze is gonna go on my Mum's birthday next month.

I wasn't surprised, she was old, and yesterday she wasn't acting quite right. At least it was peaceful, she lay down in a corner of the coop and went.

She was my fave of the group, nervous but sweet. I chose her from the flock of chicks at my college solely because she wasn't being cared for by the student that was meant to be caring for her, they didn't change her leg bands when they got too tight, the scales on her legs never grew in quite right after that even up to her death. I promised her every time I saw her that I'd bring her home with me and give her a good life. I think she did have a good life with me, and I'm going to miss her so much.

And so one remains, Blaze is looking as spry as she ever has, being top of the pecking order will do that I guess. I'll spoil her even more rotten now she's alone.

scrunkly (my "baby", character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): nat!! she’s a really interesting character with such a soft exterior and like yeah soft character can see ghosts and has light powers is a lil cliché but like?? she is here in her cardigans and she just wants to do right by her friends and i love her

scrimblo bimbo (underrated/underappreciated fave): pidge!!! they’re a weird little bird scientist with a severe lack of deserved screentime like Yes they fit in well for juno’s curse arc but what if!!! i want to know more about their Weird Science!!!!!

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won't shut up about it for a week): clair. juniper. ebony. any of the og quartet who aren’t northernfield. they all had such an important journey together and now they’re all Dead or Ghosts or Bitter and Hurting like they could have had what the final seven had but they Couldn’t because it wasn’t their time yet and now they’re just watching these kids live the lives they think they deserve it’s Heartbreaking

Okay y’all, you know what? Chibi is gonna watch another show! And I’ve chosen to watch Voltron Force! And I got the first three episodes watched tonight!  And I’m going to be honest with a few things. I’m going in knowing way less about this show than I did DotU, and I didn’t know much about DotU to begin with. And one thing does bug me. Part of the animation. It’s like there’s a clash of styles when involving robeasts and such, but I’m finding I can easily ignore that. Also, I kinda dig the intro song. Nice beat. Now, without further delay, we’ll get this started!

With episode 1!  Seeing the flashback of Lotor, his hair just doesn’t look as glorious. Oh well.  Now, moving past his hair, the lions are malfunctioning. I’m with the kid, who I later learned was Daniel (I struggle at hearing names at times, so please forgive me), on it seeming shady that they decommissioned Voltron and the lions without looking into it.  “I’ve yet to greet our first year cadets.” Lance, you sound like a sadistic bastard ready to make their lives hell with training. I mean, I probably would, too. But that’s beside the point.  Also, Sky Marshal Wade? Wade sounds like a jerk and I hope someone defenestrates him.  And Keith is a fugitive. Didn’t expect that. Okay then. Lance busting the kids, Daniel and Vince, as I later learn his name with ease. Dude... I wasn’t pleased with this at first until we got further into the episode. Then things made more sense.  And I’m led to hate Wade even further. Can we please defenestrate the man? Please? I’m going to be honest, guys. I didn’t think it’d be possible for me to like anyone better than Pidge and Chip in any form of Voltron. But it happened. Don’t get me wrong, I love Pidge still. Can’t go hating on the green team baby. BUT VINCE! The quiznaking adorable baby boy! I just want nothing good for him. I mean, I wouldn’t mind Vince whump either, but I want good things in the end for him! And his use of “snart”. I don’t know what that means but it amuses me almost as much as “quiznak”.  I like seeing the robot mouse with Keith. Like in DDP’s comic! The mice were robotic, too!  We’ve got Daniel and Vince in the simulator. And Lance joining them! Lance! You being a good boy? And those simulators taking off was not something I expected. And Lance is chill! Yes!  When Lance gave them the mission to replace the pin on Wade’s coat, I thought they were bugging him to catch what he says. Nope, the original was keys for the lions. Didn’t expect that, but I’m pleased. Nice!  And Keith getting his lion back! Huzzah! 

Now let’s move on to episode 2, shall we? “I believe he’s become part of the solution.” This scientist dude working on something... this guy is giving me the heebies and jeebies.  Now then, back with the cadets. Meeting the other cadet. Daniel’s reaction. Either a crush or he’s just a sucker for a pretty face.  And this cadet is Allura’s niece. This implies that Allura has a sibling. Right? RIGHT? What am I missing!?  Oh yeah, Lance’s tone definitely makes him seem like a sadistic bastard when he told the others he was giving them a pop quiz. And that quiz is fighting. This guy’s a bastard and I’m amused.  “I’m not gonna hit a girl.” And this cadet isn’t afraid to hit you boys. Good for her.  And for the record? I don’t know her name and I was too lazy to look her up. I really struggle with hearing words at times, especially names. Please forgive me.... So I’mma just call her cadet because I’m too lazy. Sorry.  Poor Vince. My precious baby isn’t enjoying training one bit... And Pidge helping Keith out. “You might want to take evasive action now.” Shooting starts. Pidge’s timing is impeccable.  Oh look, they’re bringing Lotor back to life apparently? And as the camera pans along his body, they flash to his skeleton at his pelvic region. I’m highly amused at that perfect method of censoring him. And back with the kiddos! Vince. He’s an adorable nerd and I love him. His deduction with the voltcoms. And... poor Vince! His fizzled. But that’s fine, he’s happy again in his zone with the lion simulator! Yes, be a happy precious boy!  And the ziplines to reach the lions. Ah, such a fun sight. And with the robeast there, I’m glad Daniel’s instinct is to help the others and fight. But he needs to practice with the lion more.  And Vince and Cadet working together in the other lion! Until the robeast yeets Green. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I feel sorry for them, but that yeet was amusing.  Keith knows how to end a fight in style. Even if he crashes.  “You still rocking the mullet?” Lance... um... your own hair is threatening to be a mullet itself.  Oh... oh... turning commander lady into the next robeast? Am I seeing that right? Oh dear....

Now let’s hit episode 3.  Screw you, Wade. And thank you, Coran, for standing up for Voltron!  Though the parallels with Wade and Lotor.... oooooh.  Um... guys? GUYS! No spoilers but VINCE HAS GLOWY SPARKY SHOCKY EYES! Should I be worried about my baby boy?  At least Cadet is seeming to try and get along with the boys. Good on you. You guys are a team now! I want a giant painting with a usable sword! But since Mama doesn’t trust me with real swords, I may need to make one with a plastic sword. Surprisingly she trusts me with a plastic one. Wade demanding the lions and Pidge and Hunk. “I want them now!”  Lance’s sass with “You’re an only child, aren’t you?” I mean, understandably, he got hit. But I’ll be honest, I’d have said the same thing. Or something else dealing with his childhood.  It’s cute seeing Vince and Pidge working together. Yes, two faves working together. This makes me happy! And Vince having to work alone. And he’s a shocky baby again. Honey, please be okay! And... spider robeast. Why is it always spiders?!  And then the dark lion... that can’t be good.  Though the lion losing and Wade being shocked. Yes. Suffer, Wade. Suffer.  And... lion in a cocoon with spider... Hunk wants to poke it. I laughed at that collective “no.”  Time to poke and quiznak! The bugger mutated with the lion! Getting the black lion fixed and back to the battle, the kids are excited about forming Voltron! Huzzah! And Daniel being adorkable, happy to say “I’ll form the head”. You dork. You’re adorable.  I had a feeling Vince’s shockiness would help in the battle. And I called it! He powered them up in the nick of time! Yay Vince! But I still hope you’re okay.  Yeet the robeast to space since it’s unstable and dangerous and... is it repairing itself? OH dear....

Okay, guys. This is it. This is the start of watching this series. Which is... just one season? Sadness. But I hope to continue enjoying it. I wanted to watch just the first episode to see, but here I am enjoying it further and three episodes in.

#34: Favorite Comment

I know I've answered this in the past but I cannot find hide nor hair of it. It's super hard for me to select any one comment as I've had so many wonderful ones that really resonated with me. But what all of those comments have in common and are my favorite to read are attention to specific details in the story/chapter whether plot, character or writing related, highlighting particular parts or scenes that resonated, and just really showing they read the story and their reactions to it. I especially love it when commissioners give me those little details and get all excited when they see a point we'd discussed and how I handled it or how I brought in an idea/trope I knew they liked (either from previous commissions or even their comments) and they recognize it. I also love when people call out my Easter Eggs I make to my other fanfictions ;p

46. Fave sentence/paragraph? Too many to count ;p I have favorite serious ones and funny ones and deep ones and even just paragraphs where there's just such beautiful figurative language that paint a scene. A more recent one (publishing, at least, it was written quite a while back xD) though that I really just liked to share is:

Lance coughed again and for the moment that seemed to be the last one as his chest had loosened the barest bit and he raised a trembling hand to his comm unit.

“I’m, I’m fine,” he choked out.

“Lance, what the hell was—?”

“I’m sorry,” he interrupted and Dios, he’d never heard Shiro sound so angry and scared. “I, I don’t feel well. I’m going to head in.”

And he turned off his comms before he could hear Shiro’s response, wheeled Red around, and fled for his hangar.

The poppies strewn all over his lap and the cockpit looked like flowers on a grave.

46.2 Wackiest sentence/paragraph

I have quite a few favorite things that could probably fit this bill (although I think they tend to be more humorous than like, crazy), but one of the more recent is from my fic Koala Hugs where for a bit of context Lance has hypothermia and Pidge is trying to save him:

Pidge was shaking too much to feel the pulse but she felt the puff of cool air and that meant Lance was breathing and that meant he was alive and that meant she wasn’t too late to save him.

Except now…

She felt her cheeks heat.

“Get it together, Katie,” she scolded herself, clapping her hands to her cheeks. “It’s fucking science.”

I also really like this scene (whole thing but just highlighting a portion here) from Holding On To Hope where Lance is suffering from hypoxia:

Lance stared at them.

They looked funny.

Sort of like potatoes.

Were space rocks edible?

Had anyone ever tried to cook them?

Hunk probably could. Hunk could make anything taste good.

But maybe they tasted good raw?

Or!

Lance’s eyes lit up.

Maybe they were like potato chips. He loved potato chips.

Some of your fav Supernatural themed fics?? I’m really loving that right now.

These ones are just key faves of mine. I know there are others out there but this list is personal favourites that people need to read tbh.

From @goth5sos we have wasteland, baby which is a fucking masterpiece. (It’s also hades!cal and I fuck with that.) Another from amara is malevolent: at nightfall. It’s a vampire!michael piece which is honestly beautiful.

Also @cakesunflower has made of gold, heart of gold, gold in the clouds all of which are apart of the same universe with angels and demons. Summer also has better light which is a demon!ash piece and honestly it got me.

Next up @5sosnsfw because Jex truly has some hidden gems and masterpieces which are supernatural based. inlecebra is immortal!luke, eat me, drink me is a personal fave and vampire!cashton, and also fae which is faerie!luke

Following on from that we have @calumsmermaid bc Lauren has written a few but also I know she loves supernatural!5sos as much as I do 👀 first off we have toxic valentine, attachments and redemption it’s an angel/demon!5sos that got accidentally created and it’s a beautiful universe. There’s also werewolf!luke with you’re my priestess.

Finally from @converse-luke is my roommate’s a vampire. I love this for several reasons, but the top one is that we’ve gone back and forth about Luke and pidge long before Ali posted the fic and they are my favourite to read about.

I’m also gonna be that writer and say if you haven’t already, I’ve got feisty (and part two), into the night, angel with a shotgun and hell over me if you want something to sink your teeth into.

Before the year is over and 2020 starts I'd like to talk about two shows I haven't even mentioned or posted about since they ended.

Two shows that were at one point very near and dear to my heart, but now I loath their very existence.

Voltron and Svtfoe

Both of the endings to these shows left a bitter taste in the mouths of the fan base, each for different yet similar reasons.

Star had lots of ship baiting and I mean lots.

It was honestly annoying at times but in the beginning at least it was bearable. Then it continues and just becomes worse. Like there was no consistency and the characters became bland shells of their former selves.

They completely ruined Marco he was so selfless and cute in the beginning but then he because the type of person who cheats and lies. Also he's like really old which is really weird to think about.

Not that it mattered in the end because the people behind the show were all about starco, so they rushed the end of the show and had Star do something rash and dangerous, without thinking of how it would effect other people just because her boyfriend of 2 days wasn't in a tapestry with her.

In conclusion Tom is best character!!!

Next it's voltron.

There are too many things wrong with voltron for me to talk about in a single post but I'm not willing to do another so whateva.

This post is mainly going to talk about ruined characters instead of ships, but I want to note that shipping is a big reason for voltron being bad in the end as well.

First up Shiro, like he was my favorite character at first then he gets ruined like the whole clone thing was almost good but nope ruined. Especially since Shiro comes out of the experience mean and angry. Which was ooc and really weird.

Like I won't go into full detail just yet but one of the things that ruined shiro's story arch was Keith. I'll get to it.

Next is Pidge with a sprinkle of Matt which is more than what the final season of voltron gave us.

Pidge was never my favorite character but I could at least understand where she was coming from. We could sympathize with her. However her obsession with finding her brother and later her father really ruined her for me. Like the story with Matt was very well written and sweet, but the stuff with her dad really dragged on and made Pidge seem like an entitled brat.

Matt used to be an actual character. Any one remember that?

Next up Keith, now Keith for me was always kinda in the middle not my favorite but still good. However by the end of the show he was my least favorite character. He was the only character in the show who got too much backstory, and too much screen time.

This show is meant to follow team voltron not just Keith. It felt like the story only progressed if Keith was there saving people.

Which is what ruined Shiros story arch. And tbh Hunks story as well. Shiro and Sendak was a rivalry built up since day one, and yet Keith is the one to kill him because why? Oh yeah he's the main character.

And it was like this for everyone else too like remember when Keith got that random weapon upgrade the plasma canon thing and he saves lance or whatever. Like it's always Keith.

He needed less development. Because all his development made everyone else look silly.

Before lance I just want to say not gonna talk about Allura, Hunk, or Coran even through Coran was a fave of mine. I will however say Coran should've been there to say good bye to Allura. Also Allura had a really good story right up until she died. And hunks story shouldn't have been shoved into the end of season 7 but oh well.

Now onto lance my favorite and best boi of all time. Lance should've been a beautifully complex character but instead he was the butt of every joke.

He even got laughed at for crying about missing his family, talk about low even for voltron.

His final and only story arch was in season 8 the last season and it revolved around the fact that he was dating Allura. It felt forced and pathetic. I couldn't help but feel bad for Lance because every scene he was just sad and upset.

They clearly only had them get together to try and make Allura dying more impactful.

He didn't have any development in the end, and he deserved so much more.

So to top it off shipping isn't necessarily bad but how creator and show runners respond to shipping is bad. Also character development is the most important part of story telling how can we connect to this characters without that.

So this is a final farewell to Star and Voltron.

welcome the the seventh fic rec friday! where, on friday, i rec five of my favourite fics.  

1. tender by sunswathe [EXPLICIT]

This is the absolute last thing they should be doing right now.

Not when Pidge is known for crashing into Keith’s room in the middle of the night for no reason other than being bored.

Not when he can hear Hunk’s loud snoring, muffled through the door.

Not when his sister is just outside, sleeping on the couch, while Lance is in Keith’s room, sleeping with her childhood best friend.

But Lance couldn't care less.

i’m gonna be real w yall ur gonna see a lot of secret relationship fics bc im obsessed with them. theres something about the tenderness of privacy and intimacy of secrecy that just Gets To Me. this fic lived up to its title exactly

2. right hand man by laidellennt

As his right hand man, Lance grows closer to Keith and realizes a few things about him, as well as a few things about himself.

In other words, Lance realizes he has a major crush on Keith.

look the red paladin lance black paladin keith dynamics Grew on me okay. i cannot live without them now they are so so powerful. this fic is fun and fluffy and it features pining lance, whom i adore. also keiths whipped ass referring to lance as his right hand man and impulse control will never fail to make me scream

3.  A Look, a Dance by @ohcontrary [explicit-ish??]

What would it be like to have Keith's arms wrapped around him for real, not as a distraction? And that look. What would it be like for it to mean jealousy, to mean desire? Lance shuddered, heat curling at the base of his spine before he stopped, sobering quickly as he remembered the serious way Keith had named him ‘my paladin.’

i specifically remember having to walk this one off. u know when a fic is so good that u actually cant take it and have to take a break to cool off?? yeah that was this fic. the PINING. dear lord. it was so wonderful. i have several lines from this screenshotted in my devotion scrapbook. please please give it a read.

Ok so there are two parts why: personally and canonically XD

Ok so how I even started thinking about it was when I was looking up Riley from Inside Out, I think? Cause I thought she was a guy in the trailer and i looked on the interwebs to see if other people had the same thought but then I saw a post by Disney Confessions that said they thought she was a Demiboy or Demigirl or something like that and i was like Oooh that makes sense (that was also when I found out about that particular gender identity I think) and as I kept scrolling through Disney Confessions i think(??? This was a while ago so Idk) someone said they thought Hiro was aro ace or asexual romantic something or I dunno and then I remembered when I watched the movie like how they first introduced Gogo when she flipped her hair and took off her helmet, which is totally used as a Meet Cute™ moment in most stuff, and how my first thought was ooghhh here we go again but nothing happened with them the rest of the movie even at the end.

And then there was the pink blast seen when honey took her glasses off and I was like oh Geeze™ but still, nothing happened and I was just so happy it went the whole movie without romance and focused on building family dynamics. Nevermind age gaps because cartoons don't care about young men having crushes on older teen girls (Ferb and Vanessa, bubblegum and Finn, dipper and Wendy). And so I was like YEAH I CAN GET BEHIND THAT and so I did. I was around Hiro's age when I found out I was asexual and when I first watched the movie and so it was super cool I could just have the headcanon and like never have it debunked unless another movie came out or something-

And low and behold BIG HERO SIX THE SERIES and gosh a part of me was like leave the gosh darn movie alone and by itself but also I really wanted to see more of my faves, especially Tadashi because I wrote a very long fanfic of him and my oc his boyfriend with legit like only 20 minutes of Tadashi screen time. (Its called Tadashi Hamada Is Mine btw go check it out) and so I watched it and while watching it I was extremely disappointed how one dimensional the show made them, cause when you just have a movie you can imagine the characters as three dimensional as you like by inferencing stuff from montages in the movie and little things like how they move and look at each other and stuff but now you have the show that just makes Gogo the edgy one and Honey the super bright one and just archetypes that aren’t that interesting anymore.

And then they introduce these girls like Karmi and Trina and I'm like they can NOT actually be trying to give him romantic interests like are you serious?? And as I watch I notice just how uncomfortable Hiro is with her. Like at first he's seriously trying to be her friend and work with her but she’s so mean to him and for no good reason?? Like, even when she is being awful to deal with he still tries being nice and when he finds out Karmi has a crush on his hero side he gets all uncomfortable, ESPECIALLY in the fanfic episode because, yeah, who wouldn’t? It’s like one direction or kpop or youtube ship fics, it’s weird! but especially cause he isn’t interested in romance at all! He’s even annoyed that people are shipping him with Karmi in that one scene, which furthers the idea that he’s not interested at all in her.

there was that moment in the episode that Karmi met that female scientist and Hiro was jealous, and usually, cartoons make an effort to have the mc’s friends tease them about having a crush on romantic interest AKA Karmi, but the bh6 crew only commented on his jealousy for not winning the thing. 

Then Trina, he was more interested in the Botfights than her, really. He blushed after she complimented his bot-building skills because he was flattered. Creating is his main focus, his passion, and obviously, it feels nice to have that recognized, which is also why he tries so hard at school and against Karmi and to live up to Tadashi. (though yeah i could be looking wayyyy to deep into it(cause i am XD)) Anyway, he becomes Trina’s mentor, and it’s a nice change for him because after probably building stuff on his own and having Tadashi there to support him, and then losing Tadashi and having all these people at college around him just as good or even better at it than him, he started to feel, as Honey put it, insecure. Being a hero gives him confidence, which is why he’s always working on updates for their suits. The bot fighter episode was about his gambling addiction and someone being a bad influence on him, similar to Emmet and his alter ego in the Lego Movie 2. He was supposed to see himself as her, not with her.

which kinda debunks my headcanon, but there was a reason it was taken out, right? Like, the writers changed their minds and decided he wouldn’t have a crush on her! So, like, his preferences, or lack thereof, are still up in the air!!

Also, it follows through the aroace scientist thing fandom has going, like for Sherlock before people shipped him with John, or Pidge from Voltron, and characters in anime that outright say romance is stupid because they're only focused on projects.

Outside of that, it just makes me happy to have some plausible aroace rep. I'm demihetro ace myself, but it’s nice to be able to see a main character in a cartoon series not have to pay romance any attention or even want it when it inevitably comes up in conversation. Does that make sense?? anyway yeah Long Live AroAce Hiro Hamada™, he baby

Saltine for Lance's incessant attempts at flirting with everyone lady-shaped, and especially Allura after she made it clear she wasn't interested, and for being weirdly possessive of her when Matt showed up.

HOOOOOOOOOOOO you gotta start with one of my “faves.” (Lance - and especially A//urance - stans, look away now.)

I can deal with Lance’s constant flirting with everything he could even vaguely maybe see as female - he’s a teenage boy, likely lacking in self-confidence and trying to find it in others, seeking validation in the form of (A) beating Keith in something, (B) getting a girlfriend or at least a kiss from a hot chick, or © both. It’s annoying, but if he’d grown out of it over time through the series - or if they’d taken some time to make it CLEAR that that’s what he’s doing, because the target demographic for this likely wouldn’t understand it otherwise - then I’d have been okay.

OMG Lance’s ultimate would have been if Keith were obviously crushing on a chick but then she kissed Lance instead. I think our poor blue boy would have died of sheer happiness right then. 

BUT LANCE AND ALLURA.

The constant hitting on her (badly) even when she showed clear disgust just… UGH. I couldn’t stand Lance for the longest time exactly because of that. 

And then, for a while, he stopped. He was just a really good support for her, and I was starting to get hopeful that maybe he’d realized what a complete and utter assjackal he was being and he was going to be her friend now. What a great development, right? What a great thing for young boys in the audience to see and take in! You can be friends with hot girls that you wanted to date! It can happen! You can just accept that she’s not into you that way and actually be her friend.

But what did we get instead? 

WE GOT VALIDATION OF THE FUCKING NICE GUY ™ BULLSHIT. 

What we got instead was, “Hey, guys, if you hit on a chick and she’s not interested, keep working her! If she’s still not responding, stop obviously hitting on her and instead pretend to be her friend and just wait because eventually she’ll come around and be your girlfriend just like you wanted!”

It makes me so… I can’t… there just aren’t words for how angry this makes me. It’s an insult to Lance and Allura. It’s an insult to A//urance fans - in my opinion. Given that I’m not one, maybe I’m biased. I know that if my ship became canon in this way, I’d be crying in disappointment. Just thinking about it is making me tear up a little.

It’s part of the reason I started getting into Plance, because the way it is in VLD canon? Lance can be friends with Pidge because he’s not attracted to her. But he can’t really be friends with Allura because he’s really just supporting her and being nice to her in the hopes of eventually getting in her pants. AND THAT BULLSHIT IS HORRIFYING. Hell, it even insults Pidge, and supposedly she was LM’s “favorite.” I’m not sure LM or JDS actually know anything about “favorites” because they were like, “Nah, man, no one’s going to like our 6 foot walking beefcake with the anime hair, metal arm, and cool scar. He’s compassionate, brave, strong without being a bully, and a great leader, but all of our fans will be SUPER GLAD to see him go.” So I’m pretty sure when LM said Pidge was her favorite, she just meant, “She’s the only one I can identify with because she’s the only white female in the group, so I’ll just choose her.”

And Lance being possessive of Allura… like, that level of possessiveness is already creepy af if they were in a relationship. You should trust your partner enough that, when some random guy (Matt) flirts with her, she’ll reject his advances. But when you add in the fact that they’re (supposedly) only friends at that point, it’s a whole new level of “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU PEOPLE WRITING HERE AND WHY ARE YOU PRESENTING IT AS OKAY?!” Hell, that scene was played for comedy. Matt’s over-the-top reaction to Allura as comedy, yeah, sure, okay. (Honestly, I don’t know why more people in the series don’t react that way to Allura. Or Shiro, for that matter.) But Lance’s reaction is the comedy counterpoint there and that is in NO WAY something to laugh at. 

LM and JDS made Lance a fucking sleazeball nice guy. Just fucking give him a trilby that he calls a fedora and have him refer to Allura as “m’lady” all the time. If you’d done that from the outset, no one would have wasted their time liking him, loving him, growing attached to him and wanting the best for him only to find out that his own creators fucking hate him AND all his fans.

I always wonder if what fans say is true that Lance doesn't get enough recognition unlike the others. I'm a Lance fan without watching Voltron and this makes me sad? Idk.

Oof… spoilers ahead (unless you’ve seen them all already)… but it’s rant time!!!

In my honest opinion, I feel like Lance is hardly recognized, especially compared to Ke/th, who literally gets all the recognition, seriously. It’s ridiculous. The favoritism for Ke/th is so blatant, which is why Lance stans get upset, and it honestly bothers me when Ke/th stans complain about our disappointment, when their Precious Fave is literally the main protagonist and hogs all the screentime. We have every right to be upset, especially since Lance is constantly being mistreated and shown feeling worthless. It makes me so upset, because they also just love to portray him as the “clown” of the team and the constant flirt.

He deserves more respect and validation from his teammates instead of scolding. I personally don’t think that Ke/th deserves the Black Paladin role, either. Nobody does. Shiro is the perfect Black Paladin, but when Ke/th was chosen, he always made the worst decisions and Lance was his right-hand, who constantly had to remind Ke/th to slow down and to come up with an actual plan. Ke/th was always rash.

Now, I won’t lie, Lance definitely had some character growth, but there’s not much development. Again, because he’s still shown being insecure and used for comedic relief most of the time, which is absolutely tiring. He’s the only character who hasn’t been given a flashback! And I find that ridiculous as well.

I feel like, ever since Ke/th returned from the Blade, everything went south, and everything that seemed promising for Lance had completely diminished into thin air, for the sake of Ke/th’s arc to continue. S3 and S5 were absolutely perfect because Lance was shown to be an amazing right-hand and quick decision maker. He was also perfect comforting his teammates, even Ke/th, because he’s so quick to act before questioning. I was so looking forward to Lance and Shiro’s relationship development after s5. All that buildup between Lance and Shiro/Kuron’s relationship development, and Lance’s suspicions of Shiro/Kuron’s strange behavior really had me thinking that Lance was going to save Shiro for once!

But, of course, they made Ke/th be the one to do it, because Ke/th just has to do everything, right? It’s all about him! He’s the one who has to figure things out and save everyone! Like, what’s the point of the other Paladins if he’s always going on solo missions and finding out information? It’s so repetitive, honestly… I’m so exhausted seeing and hearing Ke/th evey single time. I miss his character from season one. He was actually funny and awkward, but now, all he does is yell and give orders and he’s such an ass. I really can’t stand him.

I just wish Lance was on good terms with Ke/th. S3 really had a good thing going for them, Lance actually accepted Ke/th as leader and showed respect for him, but definitely didn’t hesitate to call him out on his crap, and I really liked that. They were actually becoming friends, but ever since Ke/th returned he would belittle Lance nonstop and acted like he was the best. Lance deserves bettter, really.

I just feel like everything is being taken from Lance: his endgame (because Allura might possibly die), his relationship development with Shiro (his hero of all time), which, might I add, had sooo much potential, but again, it’s like no one is allowed to bond with Shiro other than Ke/th… and I will forever be petty because s5 really made me think they were going to grow closer and Lance was going to save his hero, who saved him many times, so it would have been awesome to see Lance return the favor, but instead we saw Lance collapse on his knees and sob because he wasn’t the one to do that (EVEN THOUGH HE WAS ONTO IT), and lastly, it’s as if his relationship with Hunk and Pidge had completely disappeared! They’re not friends anymore! They’ve been constantly making fun of him instead of talking to him about what he’s been missing.

And Ke/th being the one to comfort Hunk instead of Lance, when they’ve hardly interacted throughout the show is just so strange to me… idk, I just… it’s so obvious they’re making Ke/th do everything. It makes me sick to my stomach because Ke/th honestly doesn’t deserve this much recognition. It’s all just favoritism. If I had known that he was going to be the main character from the start then I would have been okay with it, but it’s been all about him ever since season two, and I just think he’s really obnoxious. S1E1 really had me thinking that Lance was the main character, but nope! So, all I have to say is that if you’re a Ke/th stan, you’ll definitely enjoy the show, otherwise, I feel bad for people who stan Lance because you’re bound to be disappointed.

Kurance in a magic city were everyone living in it is a character trope, and there is a lot of find happiness by embracing your character. But voltron doesn't want to. Lance is the nice guy in romcoms that gets left at the altar & is in a huge amount of debt. Kuro is a villain, but he really doesn't want to be. Hunk fat joke, Pidge the girl who gets a makeover but she likes who she is and doesn't want that ect.

This sounds like some show idea/movie plot I would probably totally be in to.  Like so hard.

So I imagine Hunk and Lance meet shortly after Lance got left at the alter.  And like yeah, he was a nice understanding person who let his fiance go to some old random old flame, but like it still hurts.  Lance wanted want to eat like ice cream and wallow in self-pity, because he life just got fucked.  Because of course,  he would be a secondary character in someone’s story.  He always kind of has been, but you know, he hoped his genre would eventually be kind to him.   Hunk is there because it’s is bakery/ice creamy and they get to talking and become friends, and like make a little help group.  

At some point down the line they meet Pidge, who sort of ran away in her big moment.  And Lance (literally up into his eyeballs in debt and hurt feelings) is like “right on my friend” after she explains when she crash’s Hunk’s shop.  And they all have like a reverse makeover, and do a montage of Pidge’s fave aesthetic (or what she could find in their cloths), and are have way to just burning the makeover look.  But Lance stops them, and is like “Wait these are expensive, who paid for this?” Because you know, he’s a nice guy, and like he’s up to his eyeballs in dead, he’ll save whatever soul he can.  But then pulls back with Pidge basically says rich kids.

Eventually Lance is so in debt that his only answer to paying it off starts to become just crime.  Like got to steal shit to buy stuff off and crap.  (Pidge, being they ever dear sweet friend she is, helps him fences things and hack stuff, cause it’s fun and she likes it.  Hunk stays out of it, because he just doesn’t want to be involved, plus he is totally rather fill his time with a angry florist next store.  Probably an ex-action man or something, cause there are so many knives but it’s whatever, he likes flowers.)  This is where he meets Kuron, who is a sweetheart and soft boy, and like a low-level villain. He’s really doesn’t want to be one, but he did one “villainous” thing (he was totally a tool of another higher-level villain and is no forever labeled, and never able to get a decent job.)  

Kuron helps Lance, because honestly it was like watching a crumbling rodeo and…Lance is cute, and nice.  Totally nice the type of person doing these types of things, and ones their clear, and Lance made out with a considerably larger amount than he expected, Kuron asked why he is committing crimes.  Lance explains why, and poor little Kuron’s soft heart breaks for him, and he refuses to take any money Lance tries to give him for helping, as he explains his story.  So Lance takes him back the little group…and just…now there is a new member.

Kuron is the one that suggest they mess with the system (basically over throw it) when everyone is kind of drunk one night.  Like he’s already a villain, not that hard to make the logical step for him.  Lance readily agrees, though he knows Kuron doesn’t want to be a villain, so he’s willing to take point on everything.  Until no wait, he realize they aren’t going to be villains they are going to be heroes, saving all the secondary and painful trope roles for their fates.  From there it’s a lot easier to but their plans into motion.

Through it all, Kuron and Lance fall in love.  But Lance doesn’t say anything, because he’s been left before, he doesn’t want that to happen with Kuron.  And Kuron doesn’t say anything, because being in a relationship with a villain sucks, plus it’s not like Lance would like him back anyway. But something basically forces them to admit their feelings for the other, and they get together happily. 

(”Stop cuddling, we got city domination to plan! It’s time to wake up, you stupid love birds!  Oh and angry florist mullet guy gave Hunk the biggest thing of flowers ever.”  

“It’s so big, Lance!  You have to see it.  He compliments my arms when I lifted it no problem, I think I broke him.”  

“Good for you, Hunk, now can you get out of my room for a sec, no one in the bed is wearing pants.”

“EW, TMI, Lance!”  “Congrats you two!”)

And they totally buck the system and live happily ever after.
