The Proudest Blue by Ibtihaj Muhammad, S.K. Ali, and Hatem Ali Blessed Muharram to all today! I wanted to highlight a wonderful book today, The Proudest Blue. I know so many people are already aware of it already, but I just got my copy so wanted to share! In this joyful, confident story, narrated from the perspective of an enthusiastic younger sibling, Faizah watches as her sister, Asiya, navigates her first day of wearing the hijab. When Asiya picks out a beautiful, rich blue color, Faizah exclaims that she looks like a princess, and admires her sister as she confidently wears it to school. Though Asiyah is teased by a few peers who don't understand her hijab, she ignores the haters. As her mother says, "Some people won't understand your hijab… But if you understand who you are, one day they will too." I loved the characters! Throughout the book, Faizah bursts with pride for her sister, drawing a picture of both of them in hijab and watching her strong, calm, and friendly demeanor, and while Asiya says little, her nonverbal communication says it all. What is Islamic system of education?

Education in Islam is twofold: acquiring intellectual knowledge (through the application of reason and logic) and developing spiritual knowledge (derived from divine revelation and spiritual experience). According to the worldview of Islam, provision in educationmust be made equally for both.

The aim of the Muslim education was to develop the latent faculties of the students. Effort was made to develop their character and equip them with all that was essential for their material and moral wellbeing. Therefore, both religious and secular educationwas imparted to the students

Muslim Education:

Islam placed a high value on education, and, as the faith spread among diverse peoples, education became an important channel through which to create a universal and cohesive social order. ... After the 11th century, however, denominational interests dominated higher learning, and the Islamic sciences achieved preeminence.

I love watching the smiles on the happy faces of children on Eid. Sometimes it might be hard for them to get into the spirit of this holiday without understanding the religious significance of it; without their extended family and traditions that they left back in their home country; without all the bells and whistles that they see with western holidays like Christmas and Easter. A good percentage of us are first or second generation immigrants with fond memories of celebrating Eid back home as children, and if we want our own children to love Islam and its holidays, and continue that tradition for future generations instead of assimilating Western culture, we must put in effort to not only nurture and educate our little ones about why we celebrate Eid, but also show them that we ourselves love to celebrate it and make it a big deal in our lives. And I’m proud that parents and the community in general has done a great job in making it a joyous occasion for children, with Eid gifts, new Eid clothes, decorating the house, community gatherings, events with rides and fireworks. They’re little things and new traditions that children will learn to love and appreciate as they get older, and something I’m motivated to create with my kids. May Allah guide us and guide our children and make us a means of a beautiful legacy of faith that continues far beyond our lifetime. Ameen.
