"All These Years" - Sawyer Brown
All These Years Sawyer Brown Cafe On The Corner, 1992
She likes adventure with security And more than one man can provide She planned adventure feeling sure that he Would not be home 'til after five He turned on the lights and turned them off again, And said the one thing he could say
All these years Where have I been I've been down the road to work and home again And I'm still here Until I'm gone And don't you rub it in too hard that I've been wrong All these years
She said, "You're not the man you used to be" And He said, "Neither is this guy" She said, "There's some things you refuse to see... But I guess sometimes so do I" She made no excuse why she was lying there, She said the one thing she could say
All these years What have I done? I made your supper and your daughter and your son Still I'm here, And still confused But I can finally see how much I stand to lose All these years...
I'm still here And so confused But I can finally see how much I stand to lose, All these years.

I was in the car and superpowers came on my shuffle. I actually lifted my head to the sky when the song told me to, looking up through the sunroof. everything was beautiful, the sun was beaming, the car was in motion, the birds were calm, the leaves on the trees were a vibrant shade of green and were blowing gently in the wind. the sky was so blue and the clouds were incredibly defined. everything was clear for a second, then suddenly the same clouds that were once clear in my vision became blurry through the tears I was weeping.
spring is officially here and I’m constantly reminded that there’s nothing like music in this world. the binding force that glues us all and makes us feel. I’m filled with an abundance of gratitude at the slightest thought.
the art of sound.
with love,
B 🫀

When Lyrics Hit Hard

I’m sat here listening to Radiohead, and it’s just hit me—really hit me—how much lyrical content means to me. It hasn’t always been this way. I used to listen to a song and focus on the guitars, the distortion, the way the sound was shaped. I’d try to figure out how to recreate it, how to capture that tone and make it my own. But now? Now, it’s the words that grab me.
Lyrics are everything. They hold the weight of someone’s emotions, frozen in time, poured into melody. The hurt, the anger, the joy, the extreme sadness—it’s all there, woven into the music. It’s raw, and when it hits, it cuts deep.
I think that’s why music has always been such a huge part of my life. It’s not just sound; it’s feeling. I hear certain lines, and they resonate in ways I can’t always explain. Sometimes it’s like the songwriter reached into my chest, pulled out emotions I hadn’t even fully acknowledged, and laid them bare in front of me. It’s a strange, almost surreal feeling—like someone you’ve never met somehow understands you better than people who’ve known you for years.
There are songs I used to love purely for their instrumentation, but now, revisiting them, I see them in a completely different light. The words speak to me in a way they never did before. Maybe it’s because I’ve been through more, felt more, lost more. Experience changes how you hear things. A song you once thought was just catchy suddenly feels like a punch to the gut when you’ve lived through the emotions behind it.
Radiohead is one of those bands that just gets it. Thom Yorke’s voice, the way he delivers certain lines—it’s haunting. It’s like he’s living those emotions in real time. I think that’s what makes lyrics so powerful; when they come from a real place, they don’t just tell a story—they make you feel it. Some artists have this incredible ability to strip everything back and put their vulnerability on display, and it’s impossible not to connect with that.
It’s strange how music changes with us. A song you barely noticed years ago suddenly stops you in your tracks because now, you understand it. You feel it. There are lyrics I’ve heard a hundred times before, but one day, they just hit differently. Maybe because I’m in a different headspace, maybe because life has thrown things at me that make them more relevant. Whatever the reason, when it happens, it’s like a switch flips, and the song becomes something entirely new.
Music has always been my way of processing things. Writing it, playing it, listening to it. But now, more than ever, I find myself drawn to the words. They remind me that I’m not alone in what I feel. That somewhere, someone else has felt the same way, and they turned it into something beautiful.
And that? That’s everything to me.

Rich Men North of Richmond by Oliver Anthony
youtube
Rich Men North of Richmond Oliver Anthony Single, 2023
I'll never understand how modern conservatives have co-opted a song about class warfare into a rallying cry for conservative policies which have always supported the exact same class structure.
In 100 years, we went from the working poor heroically winning the literal and cultural Battle of Blair Mountain to the working poor voting for politicians who are trying to abolish OSHA so the top 1% can get a tax break... MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!
I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day Overtime hours for bullshit pay So I can sit out here and waste my life away Drag back home and drown my troubles away
It's a damn shame what the world's gotten to For people like me and people like you Wish I could just wake up and it not be true But it is, oh, it is
Livin' in the new world With an old soul These rich men north of Richmond Lord knows they all just wanna have total control Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do And they don't think you know, but I know that you do 'Cause your dollar ain't shit and it's taxed to no end 'Cause of rich men north of Richmond
I wish politicians would look out for miners And not just minors on an island somewhere Lord, we got folks in the street, ain't got nothin' to eat And the obese milkin' welfare
God, if you're 5 foot 3 and you're 300 pounds Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds Young men are puttin' themselves six feet in the ground 'Cause all this damn country does is keep on kickin' them down
Lord, it's a damn shame what the world's gotten to For people like me and people like you Wish I could just wake up and it not be true But it is, oh, it is
Livin' in the new world With an old soul These rich men north of Richmond Lord knows they all just wanna have total control Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do And they don't think you know, but I know that you do 'Cause your dollar ain't shit and it's taxed to no end 'Cause of rich men north of Richmond
I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day Overtime hours for bullshit pay

Music: My Lifelong Lifeline

Music has saved my life more times than I can count. It has been my comfort, my release, my way of processing emotions too tangled to unravel with words alone. From the joyful innocence of childhood to the raw rebellion of my teenage years and the reflective moments of adulthood, music has always been there, shaping me, grounding me, and sometimes just keeping me going
I can still see my five-year-old self, spinning around the living room, arms flailing, utterly lost in Brown Girl in the Ring by Boney M and Stomping around the room aaahhhh ha aaaahhhh ha'ing along to Adam Ant's classic Prince Charming. They were not just a song; they were pure, unfiltered joy. I had no worries, no weight on my shoulders—just the beat, the melody, and the feeling of being completely free. Those moments were golden, the kind of happiness that only a child dancing without a care in the world can understand.
Fast forward to my teenage years, and things looked a little different. Gone were the carefree dances; in their place came the full-force angst of adolescence. The world felt unfair, overwhelming, and at times, completely unbearable. But I had Nirvana. I had Negative Creep and Smells Like Teen Spirit blasting through my headphones, the lyrics echoing my frustration, my confusion, my need to push back against everything. Kurt Cobain’s voice wasn’t just sound; it was a lifeline, a reassurance that someone out there understood what it felt like to not fit, to feel too much, to want to scream just to be heard.
Now, as an adult, my taste in music is as broad as the emotions it has helped me navigate. Some of it comes from my parents—Mum’s love for The Carpenters, Dad’s "The Singer and the Song" record (that incidentally is now one of my most played vinyls). Don't forget the constant presence of Dire Straits and Queen in the background of my childhood. Then there are my own discoveries, the artists who became the soundtrack to different phases of my life—Chris Cornell’s raw, aching vocals, Jamie Lenman’s fearless creativity, NOFX’s punchy defiance. And that’s just scratching the surface. My collection spans millions of songs, each one tied to a memory, a feeling, a moment where music was exactly what I needed.
But music hasn’t just been something I listen to; it’s something I create. Writing music, both alone and with my best friend Geordie, has given me a way to offload emotions in their purest form. The anger, the hurt, the love, the happiness, the sadness—they all find their way into the lyrics, into the chords, into the very fabric of the songs we create. Sometimes, words fail me, but music never does. It allows me to express what I can’t say out loud, to turn pain into something tangible, something that might even help someone else the way music has always helped me.
Music has been my constant companion, my healer, my form of therapy. It has held my hand through childhood innocence, teenage rebellion, and adult reflection. It has given me a voice when I felt unheard and a place to belong when I felt lost. And for that, I will always be grateful.
