A tiny Hawaiian squid, Euprymna scolopes, has become a model for thinking about this process. The “bob-tailed squid” is known for its light organ, through which it mimics moonlight, hiding its shadow from predators. But juvenile squid do not develop this organ unless they come into contact with one particular species of bacteria, Vibrio fischeri. The squid are not born with these bacteria; they must encounter them in the seawater. Without them, the light organ never develops. But perhaps you think light organs are superfluous. Consider the parasitic wasp Asobara tabida. Females are completely unable to produce eggs without bacteria of the genus Wolbachia. Meanwhile, larvae of the Large Blue butterfly Maculinea arion are unable to survive without being taken in by an ant colony. Even we proudly independent humans are unable to digest our food without helpful bacteria, first gained as we slide out of the birth canal. Ninety percent of the cells in a human body are bacteria. We can’t do without them.
As biologist Scott Gilbert and his colleagues write, “Almost all development may be codevelopment. By codevelopment we refer to the ability of the cells of one species to assist the normal construction of the body of another species.” This insight changes the unit of evolution. Some biologists have begun to speak of the “hologenome theory of evolution,” referring to the complex of organisms and their symbionts as an evolutionary unit: the “holobiont.” They find, for example, that associations between particular bacteria and fruit flies influence fruit fly mating choice, thus shaping the road to the development of a new species. To add the importance of development, Gilbert and his colleagues use the term “symbiopoiesis,” the codevelopment of the holobiont. The term contrasts their findings with an earlier focus on life as internally self-organizing systems, self-formed through “autopoiesis.” “More and more,” they write, “symbiosis appears to be the ‘rule,’ not the exception. . . . Nature may be selecting ‘relationships’ rather than individuals or genomes.”

So does anyone else think about what the Mushroom Kingdom must be like during the events of Super Paper Mario? Does anyone think about how the Void is basically a black hole and should probably mess with gravity and rip buildings apart? Does anyone think about the sky turning red as the wold begins to shake, and all of the Toads huddling together in the castle, boarding up the doors out of fear. Do you think that, during the final battle in Castle Bleck, if the castle is falling apart, Peach can see through the Void and see her kingdom being destroyed? Do you think it even existed anymore at that point? Do you think the Mushroom Kingdom disappeared like Sammer's Kingdom and the Land of Cragnons? Do you think Peach realizes this? Do you ever just. Think about the Mushroom Kingdom...?

There's a couple of things the sequel could do with Daisy to differentiate her from Peach aside from their personalities: 1) she came across Sarasaland as an adult, and 2) over half the time she has no idea how to rule a kingdom
While these ideas aren't bad, I really like the idea that King Totomesu just found baby Daisy randomly one day and immediately took her in as his own cub. And the other three rulers react like that one scene from Sunny in Philidelphia-

ok very specific gripe about assassination classroom
Tumblr media
But how comes the series is all "be yourself, use your hobbies, despite everyone judgement, for good" then just... Never questions the roasting of Mimura air guitaring?
Look at my boy! He's so unwell afterwards
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ik now there are more scenes later in the manga that again use it as a Punchline. It just encapsulates that weird gap of "things that are just never Not the Joke/Mocked" which kind of defeats the show messaging 😭
t's not even used in a "do it anyway, grow strong and proud" like some others, it's just. There.
Tumblr media
(hi rinka btw happy belated birthday to you)
Anyway unconsequential nitpicking rant over, have a good day.
#assassination classroom#ansatsu kyoushitsu#koki mimura#mimura koki#kouki mimura#mimura kouki#mimura kōki#Kōki Mimura#IDK HOW TO TAG HIS NAME ARGH#koro sensei#i just love my mushroom boy so much :((( he never gets a spotlight AND is the butt of jokes about his harmless hobbies#whilst some classmates i won't name literal do SHADY STUFF that does under the radar#a little bit like our girl hara... the kind kids that were kept in the background... they were too amazing i fear...#like he's not even going to bounce back/roast koro back! he's a peacekeeper! he's just vibing and getting dunked on for it!#ik he's rather forgotten but hey i wanted to do it quickly and post it <3 my son. air guitar all you want fr#anyway yeah i'm a mimura fan idk if anyone knew it publicly. hes just fun. i even made an OC linked to him hehe :) i might share her someda#I DO KNOW in the future (thanks to irraydiance translation of the graduation album time personal history pages) that#“His amazing air guitar bouts become the stuff of legend at the station and he js forcibly dragged on to TV shows and even#the world championshipsto showcase his talent" so I guess happy ending (and trip to Oulu in Finland) but come on!#Forcibly? I hope he learns to have fun and be proud of it#but it's not like canon gives us much... ]:( (<- the ] is meant to represent his bangs/haircut lol)#I know I'm taking it too seriously perhaps but it just. Irks me there's those small shortcomings in the manga! It's valid criticism!

prompts are: “in the future” and “on a… cruise?”
more from that Draw Your Rise OC Challenge by @angellustrates
(previous, next)
River is not having a great time in these.
The first prompt gave the option for either the bad or good future, but since River was already an adult and I don’t see her changing much in appearance in the good future, I drew something from the bad future :( She would not do well in an apocalypse. She ends up getting stuck in her ghost-like form.
And on that “cruise,” well, she’s uncomfortable in a dress and overstimulated with the bright light and lots of people and smell of sunscreen and has no clue what’s going on. The reason she’s able to sort of keep it together is she remembers Warren. (Before this, the two of them had been searching for Hypno who’d been kidnapped.)
Also, the bad future one got me thinking about the movie, and I decided to try giving a design for a krangified River a try. (Don’t worry, it’s not canon to her story.) Under the keep reading in case anyone doesn’t want to see it.

Making worlds is not limited to humans. We know that beavers reshape streams as they make dams, canals, and lodges; in fact, all organisms make ecological living places, altering earth, air, and water. Without the ability to make workable living arrangements, species would die out. In the process, each organism changes everyone’s world. Bacteria made our oxygen atmosphere, and plants help maintain it. Plants live on land because fungi made soil by digesting rocks. As these examples suggest, world-making projects can overlap, allowing room for more than one species. Humans, too, have always been involved in multispecies world making. Fire was a tool for early humans not just to cook but also to burn the landscape, encouraging edible bulbs and grasses that attracted animals for hunting. Humans shape multispecies worlds when our living arrangements make room for other species. This is not just a matter of crops, livestock, and pets. Pines, with their associated fungal partners, often flourish in landscapes burned by humans; pines and fungi work together to take advantage of bright open spaces and exposed mineral soils. Humans, pines, and fungi make living arrangements simultaneously for themselves and for others: multispecies worlds.

almost 3 years ago i got a tattoo of a bunch of mushrooms around my left bicep which was meant 2 look like a fairy ring. what i did not expect as a repercussion of this was the sheer quantity of ppl 2 whom i wld have 2 explain what a fairy ring is. i didn’t think it was that niche as folklore goes but like. i literally feel like that comic that goes around here periodically like “well ur average person only knows of one or 2 natural phenomena once attributed 2 the fair folk” but apparently the actual number is zero!!
