I'm reading Earthlings by Sayaka Murata and I'm only 40 pages into the book and something just happened that was just a little too similar to my childhood and I had to stare into the middle distance and take some deep breaths

Basically same start-up maizono has to reach high enough ratings to survive and she does her usual idol routine trying to save herself but quickly she notices something is wrong her movements are slowing as she dances around and sings she is slowly fattening up and her ratings drop and her gain slows down~ until junko starts making a bigger and bigger monokuma audience to keep watching her~ soon her ratings start rising but as the ratings rise her weight goes up as well until every step shatters a bit of the stage~ {and her flabby useless ankles} her singing is becoming like moans and heavy breathing as her flabby heart starts slowing down she is almost reaching the rating goal!~ but the gigantic monitor behind her stops showing the ratings and starts showing her heart rate as her idol carrer ends with a BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!~ as her lard ridden heart stops from overworking herself on stage~

Genuinely at a loss of words in a good way, this rots by brain chemistry good... The show doesn't stop until the fat lady pops!~

Sayaka was in Akihabara, maintaining a straight face and attempting to not stand out in the crowd. The sight of anime and manga and relevant merchandise in a number of the stores turned gears in her stomach and brought some heat to her cheeks. ... Now she was standing out in the crowd, standing in the middle of a crowded sidewalk, staring through one store's windows.

She'd received the note slipped underneath her dorm room door the day before. The handwriting had been relatively unfamiliar to her, different than most of her close friends' telltale penmanship: Chiaki's varying levels of scrawl depending on how immersed she was in a game, Gundham's elaborate flair, and the odd note from Kazuichi that was often tinted in some sort of grease and attempts at love poetry.

This was written by another hand entirely, and one not part of Class 77-B. Truthfully, Sonia didn't know the 79th Class all that well: it was the way the Japanese high school system was structured. They only had three years of it, so by the time Class 79 was beginning their education at Hope's Peak, the 77th classes were preparing for graduation and a life outside of Hope's Peak Academy. But when Tsumugi Shirogane had requested her company, she felt compelled to say yes. One, because it was the kind thing to do as an upperclassman.

And two, perhaps a bit more shamefully, Sonia was intrigued by Tsumugi's talent. She made efforts, perhaps more than others, to befriend her peers on merits of personality and morals and values, not what Hope's Peak deemed them worthy for. But Tsumugi...her talent was fascinating. Sonia had heard of cosplay, of course: Novoselic, like plenty of countries in Europe, had conventions and other events devoted to anime and Japanese culture, where attendees would visit in costume and take photos and videos embodying different characters.

Not that Sonia had ever been allowed to attend, of course: there was one expo in Paris each summer that, since the age of ten, she'd pleaded with her mother and father to go. But it was too great a security risk, and being recognized purchasing merchandise of series with questionable content would not prove to be a good look for the royal family. Cosplay, naturally, was out of the question to begin with: if she was recognized in attire inappropriate for a princess to wear, it would follow her for the rest of her life.

Still, Sonia was undeterred, at least about befriending Tsumugi and learning more about her fellow student. Maybe she was creating a costume for a series or character Sonia was very familiar with. Maybe even, she grinned as she approached the door to Tsumugi's student lab, it was for a horror franchise. It was entirely possible her underclassman had heard of her love of horror (and anime, and gothic literature) and sought her opinion regarding a design! Or maybe she loved them too and was looking to make a like minded friend!

Yes. That was what Sonia chose to believe as she raised her hand and knocked at Tsumugi's door. "Shirogane-san?" She called out. "Are you in? I received your note and have arrived at the specified time."

As soon as Sayaka got an invitation to the Ohara Hotel in the mail she signed up nearly immediately, thinking the waterside resort would be a paradise to lose weight with other struggling idols after a quick skim through!!!

...

The shock on miss Maizono's face when she waddled on in only to see that the idols residing there were not only decently heftier than herself but also -- slobbier to put it lightly sure did throw her for a loop... Of course she wasn't going to be rude about it to others, that'd only be hypocritical at the end of the day as another obesity struggler, but she internally gulped as she made her way around the hotel to meet the other idols, knowing that their collective slobbish habits would surely rub off on herself...

At least the food and service here were as excellent as advertised; even if she swears that with each passing minute her already ill-fitting idol dress feels tighter and tighter... Maybe after her next venture to the cafeteria her belt will finally pop off, that'll surely free up some space...
