Chinese Censorship of the 2023 Hugo Award Nominations

Back before the 2023 Hugo Nominations were conducted, I noted that the Chengdu Worldcon Hugo committee had inserted a worrying clause indicating that local government officials could invalidate nominations for breaching the norms and standards of China. I suspected this would result in arbitrarily applied censorship to control the ballot. I am sad and unsurprised to discover I was correct.

The 2023 Hugo Nomination vote data has been published (https://www.thehugoawards.org/2024/01/2023-nominating-and-final-ballot-statistics-published/), and includes notation where nominations were excluded from the ballot. Those with normal reasons, such as being in the wrong category or not being published in 2022 are identified with their reasons for exclusion. This time there are a number of nominations that are merely marked at "Not eligible".

Here is the list of those nominations, that would otherwise have been placed on the final 2023 Hugo Award Ballot.

Babel - R.F. Kuang - Best Novel: Very likely excluded for referencing student revolution, and the use of language and translation as coercive tools of oppression. Color the World - Congyun "Mu Ming" Hu - Best Novellette : A story about perception of, aid of, and discrimination against disability. Congyun Hu has left China and now lives in New York. Fogong Temple Padoga - Hai Ya - Best Story : Either there is something in the original Chinese that was not translated, there's a taboo subject that elides my reading, or this otherwise innocent looking near future tale of cultural building restoration was written by the wrong person. The Art of Ghost of Tsushima: Dark Horse and Sucker Punch Games - Best Related Work : The video game Ghost of Tsushima was subject to directed social exclusion for it's depiction of the Mongol invasion of Japan. Sandman, Amazon Studios: Best Dramatic Presentation (Long and Short) - A diverse and divergent cast, includes subject matter and social issues that are currently taboo in China. Paul Weimer - Fan Writer: Publicly Critical of holding a Worldcon in China. Xiran Jay Zhao - Astounding Award: Qualifying work "Iron Widow" is reimagined story of Chinese Empress Wu during a fantasy/mechanical alien invasion.

This raises a lot of questions as to if this basically taints the process, and what can be done about it.

Hornet

Technically its not a sword but she wields a needle in a setting where swords do not exist and she wields it in an exceedingly swordlike fashion so. She counts; Girlboss demigoddess spider lady. She's been protecting an entire kingdom for longer than many of the other characters have been alive. She systematically kills her siblings for being too weak. She's simply the best.

So, SPOILERS

but I feel like the "she systematically kills her siblings" part needs a little clarification. See, one of her siblings was used as a living prison for an angry god and that uh. Didn't work out for the sibling in question or anyone else.

This account is itself heavily abbreviated but it's likely that any other sibling Hornet encounters will be trying to take over as the god's new prison. She appears to challenge any sibling she sees to battle, in order to test their resolve against herself and her needle - would they actually have a chance against that god?

We never actually see her kill any siblings, but she does quite pointedly tell one of them that (to paraphrase) "My needle is lethal and I would feel no sadness in a weakling's demise."

Feels like a relevant quote. In any case, if they can't beat Hornet, it seems like her needle would be a far more merciful end than what the god would grant.

As is the case for any cool swordswoman, it's not just her sword that's lethal, it's her with it. And Hornet's needle was custom made for her - the creators have said that, while other needles exist, hers was made specifically for her to wield, and its construction allows her to use her spider silk better in combat.

And another thing that I think makes her a good swordswoman: she's actually pretty thoughtful about how she uses it. There's a least one instance where she tries to warn someone off before fighting them! At the same time, when she does fight, she seems to enjoy it - during her boss battles, you can hear her laugh sometimes, as if exhiliarated. She's really got it all, as a swordswoman!!!

Flights and fights make the world go round and round and round.

I'm not sure if I did a deep dive about dad's first flight outta MNL, so, let's go! Here's the back story. I got into my first ever car accident which is a total wreck. I went to the office and finished my day the next day around 5:30 AM. Dad asked where the car was. I said it was somewhere in Makati traffic police station. I got towed then slept. When I woke up, dad said that I'm a super bad liar because he knew hours after my wreck. It was probably the first time I saw him really worried. He even took a leave to bring me to the hospital. He joked that I might have injured my head that's why my delulu and baliw-baliw levels are off the roof. The doctor said I was fine, but the prescription was to veer away from driving and get a driver. Me to myself: 'Di kami mayaman, doc. HUY.

I negotiated the insurance and got a settlement that was enough to pay the car, have a downpayment for a new car, plus... funds that allowed us to visit HK. HAHAHAHAHA. Not bad, at all, right? The past days, Dad has been egging me about that shit it turned into shimmer. EMYYYY.

To what extent does your OC function as a mouthpiece for your own views when it comes to describing their opinions or reactions? Do you quite like exploring how someone with very different values to your own might respond to a situation?

In the comparatively little time I've RP'ed them, I'd say they're a mouthpiece about... 75%? of the time. Just that the way they express the opinions are different simply because I am neither as calm as Oudine, nor as conciliatory as Remont nor as daring as Philomene. Whatever they say or however they react is quite possibly an ideal of how I might react in that given situation.

Then again, I've also only been actively RP'ing as the twins; more so with Oudine who, in general, is the kind of person I would like to be when I grow up. So all the things she does and says are things I think would be an ideal form of reaction from my perspective. In general though, I think we share rather similar values and beliefs (for now anyway - I know characters take on a life of their own once we give them enough time).

Philomene is the one whose attitude and opinions are way more different than my own, and - as of right now - more unpredictable than her kids. I do find her fun to write though because 1) she has no more fscks to give and 2) there are any amount of older women to draw from in my experience: countless jade-wearing matriarchs from HK dramas, lots of dowager empresses from other dramas, Geraldine McEwan's version of Miss Marple, Granny Fa from Mulan, the Dowager Countess from Downton Abbey, Lady Danbury from Bridgerton, that One Old Lady Who Didn't Give A Shit in Georgette Heyer's novel, Lady of Quality, Lady Catherine de Bourgh from Pride & Prejudice - and probably many more. And all of them DGAF in their own wonderful ways.

...no wonder the Dowager is unpredictable AF. Anyway, channelling a mix of them into Philomene is always fun. I also personally fear for her and the consequences she might incur upon herself after she mouths off in public, because someone has to and it sure as hell isn't going to be her.

Sooo dad pirated the new mulan movie and a few things i have to say

The good:

1. Good cinimatography

2. Great cgi

3. Mushu was not in this movie but they made it so he really was not needed nor could have improved the movie

4. Amazing fight scenes

5. No actual love interest!

6. There’s a new villianess who is honestly the best part of the movie and is sympathetic and complex and gets a redemption

7. My god she was good and deserved better

8. Surprisingly feminist af.

9. Great departure from the original and actually a real adaptation for once and not just a copy paste inferior

10. Second half is almost entirely its own thing tbh and its great

11. Lots of great nods to the original Hua Mulan story which i liked a lot, like the bit about the rabbits

The bad

1. First half is very copy paste and feels empty without the songs

2. They do this weird thing where they have instrumentals of the songs and tbh all it does is makes me angry that the actual songs aren’t there

3.the physical comedy is...weird and uncomfortable. Its trying to be cartoony but in a serious action film doesn’t land well.

4. Lack of shang was sad for me

5. Mulan has a sister in this and shes just....very unnessicery???

6.the soldiers really have no character development aside from Chen and all their interactions with mulan feel very clunky and generic, even Lin’s. Aside from Cricket and Chen i would not be able to remember any of them or what they contribute.

7. The bathing scene is still there and its.....waaaay more uncomfortable. At least imo.

8. Despite all the good its hard to ignore the fact that this was a movie made with mostly the chinese audience in mind and so it can make certain things uncomfortable for western audiences if you think too deeply about them cause its taking chinese social cues instead of western ones. This isn’t absolutely bad but something to keep in mind as a member of the western audience going in.

9. There are a lot of current political issues surrounding this film as a result, including many chinese members of production being anti hong kong and being in support of other shitty things the CCP is doing either by choice or because they have too cause otherwise the movie won’t play in china.

10. This movie was not fucking worth 30 dollars anyways please pirate it if you want to see it.

劇情簡介 迪士尼再次宣布真人版電影計畫，2020年推出《花木蘭》真人電影。電影將由《侏羅紀世界》編劇瑞克賈法與亞曼達席佛合力撰寫劇本，由《鯨騎士》紐西蘭女性導演妮琪卡羅執導，中國女演員劉亦菲將飾演花木蘭，甄子丹飾演恩師童將軍，李連杰飾演古代皇帝，傑森史考特李飾演入侵的外族敵軍可汗，鞏俐飾演反派外族女巫。安佑森(Yoson An)飾演陳洪輝一角。

《花木蘭》真人電影，改編自中國文學作品，描述勇敢的少女木蘭，女扮男裝，帶父從軍，英勇抵禦北方外族的侵略。真人版將先祖守衛象徵的木須龍，改動為中國祥獸鳳凰，喻難分雌雄。

當北方入侵者大舉來襲，華夏隨即陷入國族的安危，面對兵力短缺的情況下，皇上下令徵召民間每個家族必派一位壯丁從軍；身為花家長女的花木蘭，決定代替年老病衰的父親，女扮男裝投入軍旅生活。木蘭以鋼鐵般的意志，及過人的智慧，奮勇殺敵解救了國家，並為家族帶來榮耀，更讓自己成為中國有史以來最偉大的戰士之一。

邊個會估到喎？「花木蘭」 竟然可以用一個滑稽嘅角度嚟造出一齣喜劇！(^^) 頭先聽緊呢齣劇嘅主題曲，葉倩文嘅 《揚��女子》，就一瞬之間覺得懷舊，便上網搵下關於本劇嘅資料。一搵就搜出呢幾張截圖出嚟…呢啲截圖，相信而家係屬於一些稀少罕見嘅圖像啦罷！即刻保管喺tumblr呢邊！(笑)

Who would have thought? The legend of 花木蘭 (Hua Mulan) could actually work as a farce/comical series? Was just listening to the themesong (揚眉女子 by Sally Yeh, 葉倩文) from this series and was hit with a wave of nostalgia, casually looked up some stuff on this and found these (by now rather rare) pics! Saving to tumblr immediately! (Heh!)

P.S.: Pity tumblr didn't allow me to upload the song file. Would have liked to introduce and share it here. Sally Yeh's old song…and a Cantonese one at that, don't think many younger folks here would have heard of it? (Heh!) in light of the lead actress of the new mulan remake voicing support for the HK police and people boycotting the movie, please be aware there is very heavy censorship in china and a lot of chinese celebrities are sharing the same image in order to protect their families. the situation is complicated and not strictly black and white. of course you can interpret how you like and still boycott if you wish, but i didn't see a post mentioning this yet
