LadyDevimon EX1-060 Alternative Art by Kariki Hajime from the Digimon Illustration Competition 2023 Pack
「Blood moon」 by Kariki Hajime
Winners' comments Digimon is a very special anime series and many of its monsters have left unique impressions on me. I wanted to share the appeal of Digimon with everyone through my artwork, so LadyDevimon Under a Scarlet Full Moon was born.I'm grateful that my work has been well received and feel honored to have participated in the competition with other artists. I will keep working in the future!
Judge's comment This is an amazing work that stood out in terms of color balance, personal touches, and composition. Congratulations on winning the Grand Prix!! - Mr. Kenji Watanabe
With so many great works of LadyDevimon, this one really charmed us with the unique composition and characteristic use of colors. Looking at the fallen angel standing tall against the blood moon, what does her facial expression tell? - Mr. Masashi Harada
Congratulations on winning the Grand Prize. It's so stylish. The handling of the lighting is wonderful and there's what's flowing down from the moon, blood is it? It might look like that because of how her hair blows in the wind from the gorge. It might be that we came across her at a moment that we aren't meant to see. This work has a strange charm that sets off the imagination despite its simplicity, rousing that kind of feeling. - Mr. Shinsuke Kojima
The character's pose and the layout of her expression and the screen are extremely stylish. I rate this highly for the high level of pure drawing ability as well as the flavor of the illustration and the taste of color in the background. - Digimon Card Game R&D Team
I was overwhelmingly captivated by this picture even during the first judging and that didn't change until the end. It's an illustration with amazing colors and composition. - Ms. Hiromi Seki
I love the composition where LadyDevimon seems to look down on both the Digiworld and the real world, while the red moon in the background matches the character's attributes, contributing to an overall great color tone. What is it that she is gazing at? It's an impressive illustration that promises to tell a narrative. - Digimon Ghost Game Production Staff

Me or her —- it’s up to you.
I believe that choosing these two leaders was something that everyone had a hard time with. (including me) because if you have to choose someone, you have to choose adaman or irida.
This scene is an important scene because choosing adaman or irida means choosing which legendary pokemon to catch first.
It's not very difficult to decide. if you want to catch dialga first choose adaman or if you want to catch palkia first choose irida but if I like both characters can I choose two 😂😂😂😂
I really like adaman's Japanese lines. I will translate these two people's lines. There is a comparison between the Japanese and English chapters.
I will start with irida first and adaman last.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
わたしだよね!(watashida yo ne!)
it’s me, right!
irida uses the pronoun 私 (watashi) written in kanji, わたし(watashi) written in hiragana.
**The writing method is different, but the reading and meaning are the same. It means I in Japanese. Mostly women use it to represent themselves**
バサギリを鎮めるとき (basagiri o shizumeru toki)
材料となる好物を持つてきたし (zairyo to naru kōbutsu o motsute kitashi)
ともにシズメダマをつくったよ!(tomoni shizumedama o tsukutta yo!)
We use favorite food ingredients as ingredients to calm basagiri(kleavor). We made this balm together!
**There's not much difference between irida's Japanese and English dialogue.**
バサギリ (basagiri) Japanese name for kleavor
シズメダマ (shizumedama) Japanese name for balm
The main characters Rei and Akari are called irida in Japanese with the ending さん(SAN).
The Japanese name for irida is カイ(kai). irida is always called カイさん(kai-san).
Irida in Japanese, the names of the main characters Rei and Akari always end in さん(SAN).
Rei's name in Japanese is テル(teru). Rei will be called テルさん(teru-san).
Akari's name in Japanese is ショウ(Shou). Akari will be called ショウさん(shou-san).
さん(san) means Mr. , Ms. , Mrs. or Miss and can be used with both first and last names , suffix which shows respect
This word is used to refer to the names of people who are not close to each other. This word is quite formal, such as a boss calling his subordinates. Or when they first met and they weren't close yet, etc. Normally, Japanese people call each other by their last names. The last name comes before the first name. But in the same company, there are many people with the same last name. Sometimes you have to call them by their first name or position or department. So that we will understand that it is the same person who is talking about this.
summarize
さん(san) = used to refer to someone who is older than you. , people who are not close friends, people who just met It's an official word.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
オレにするよな (ore ni suru yo na)
Choose me, right.
adaman uses the pronoun to refer to himself. オレ(ore) means "I" in Japanese. Mostly used by men in place of themselves (very impolite, used only with close friends). But it's a word that Japanese male teenagers like to use with their friends.)
あんたが吹いている (anta ga fuite iru)
カミナギのふえをゆずったのは誰だ? (kaminagi no fue o yuzutta no wa dareda?)
目の前にいる色男だぜ (me no mae ni iru iro otoko da ze)
Who was the first person to give you that Celestica Flute to play?
It's the handsome young man in front of you.
**There's not much difference between adaman's Japanese and English dialogue**
カミナギのふえ (kaminagi no fue) Japanese name for Celestica flute.
adaman calls the main character あんた(anta), meaning you (it's an informal word and should be used with people who are close to each other) Abbreviated from the word あなた(anata) meaning you (it's a formal word In general, you call people not close to. or people who don't know each other if necessary)
The main characters Rei and Akari are called adaman with the ending さん(SAN) in Japanese.
The name adaman in Japanese is セキ(seki). adaman is always called セキさん(seki-san).
adaman in Japanese, only the name of the main character is called without the ending.
Rei's name in Japanese is テル(teru). Rei will be called テル(teru).
Akari's name in Japanese is ショウ(shou). Akari will be called ショウ(shou).
Tumblr media
Image sources
English uses strapping young man.
Japanese uses 色男(iro otoko).
The word "handsome" or "cool" is often used using the word いい男 (ii otoko), which has a rather broad meaning, meaning it can be both a handsome man, good looks, good taste, and may include social status such as a good family background and a good career. or have wealth, etc.
But adaman uses 色男(iro otoko), which is a synonym. It means the handsomeness, sexiness, charm that exists directly in that man. which comes from kabuki drama (Ancient dramas in which all actors are performed by men) are 二枚目(nimaime) , 色男 (iro otoko) , 男前 (otokomae)
**But I will only explain the word 色男 (iro otoko).**
色男 (iro otoko) handsome young man, fragrant young man, sexy guy
色男 (iro otoko) refers to a man who is handsome, good-looking, charming, sexy, and "flirtatious."
The word 色 (iro) in Japanese Often used to refer to the relationship between men and women. Or an affair, so if you talk about 色男(iro otoko) , it usually has the meaning of being a flirtatious man, a lascivious man.
summarize
色男 (iro otoko) = handsome, good-looking, charming, sexy, a charming man who is very attractive to women.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
seki-san is iro otoko.
I like that adaman knows himself to be a handsome, sexy guy.
(But he's really a handsome young man, so hot because he's an attractive person for both men and women.)
**He is a handsome, charming and sexy guy.**
**He's not a flirt. Don't misunderstand!!!!**
Who game developer came up with this role for adaman, I love it, dammit. 💯💯💯💯💯 💯💯💯💯💯
Can it be considered information? I don't know. But what I do know is that it's my personal preference. 😂😂😂
I wrote quite a long one. I hope you're not bored with me first. If I provide incomplete information or provide incorrect information you can tell me! or you can exchange ideas with me.

Ms juju... Are you even hearing yourself?? Seki??? Smells like shit?????? Not possible. I just know that Seki smells amazing. The scent of Otogiri Seki is an enchanting allure. His aroma is simply captivating, drawing me closer like a magnetic force. His scent wraps around me like a warm, comfortable embrace, like the smell of fresh, sun-kissed fields in the summertime. When I catch a whiff of him, it feels like a trip down memory lane, evoking a sense of nostalgia and wonder. Seki's smell and perspiration is the essence of attraction itself, drawing me in with an irresistible charm. Seki might do bad things and he might be an evil man to your eyes but to me, he's my princess with a disorder and i love him nonetheless. Thank you.

English in Motto! Ojamajo Doremi
On Momoko’s debut, which I’m currently at, I really enjoy the idea of not only a character that was raised in my home country and state (yeet), but also one that can’t even speak the same language as the others, yet she’s a main character. You don’t see plotlines like that at all in anything, and usually if you do it’s a foreign language from a stranger for comedic effect.
On that note, though… some of the other characters’ attempts at English are kinda cringeworthy. I shit you not, when Ms. Seki asked something along the lines of “CAAN yu in-tro-DUCE yourself?” I had to pause because I just started laughing. I realize she’s really trying here, and I feel bad for laughing at the voice acting, but, yknow, she tried her best.
Momoko’s VA is mostly good with the English, though. I read she learned English in junior high, so that was why she sounded like she knew what she was saying. Everyone else though, including Momoko’s mom, need a little more practice.
On another note, I thought Momoko’s VA sounded a little masculine… and although it was a woman, she also voiced Masaru apparently! (Masaru’s that “idgaf” boy that i hope everyone ships with Hazuki)

Sukamon BT3-063 Alternative Art by Irasa from the Digimon Illustration Competition 2023 Pack
「Have a Sukamon parfait」 by IRASA
Winners' comments Thank you so much for selecting my illustration out of many. I drew my illustration while imaging a scene of someone wearing a parfait costume to go on a date with someone cute. I am so happy that many people were able to see the mischievous Sukamon!
Judge's commentIf you see this menu at a Digimon cafe, you'd definitely order, eat, and post it on social media!! That moment popped into my mind, so I voted for it without hesitation!! - Ms. Hiromi Seki

sekikai
modern au , there are seki's parents , there are kai's parents , unwillingly got engaged
Before reading the plot read this section first. maybe a little confused?
I call them both by their Japanese names. I'm more used to Japanese names than English names. But English name is okay.
age sekikai seki 16 kai 14
this plot, Seki is in Japan. Kai is in abroad since childhood because her parents moved to work in Japan. So she had to move back to Japan.
Appointments for viewing in Japan must include a photo. Personal history sheet family history sheet Let the other family look at it and then decide to make an appointment to see it, unlike a blind date where a friend will make the appointment themselves. But this plot isn't.
They are a fake couple. But after that, they were really a couple.
Kai in Japanese, when her call someone else, the ending is "san" meaning "mr. , ms. , mrs. or miss"
Seki's parents and Kai's parents are friends. They promised each other that if they had a son and daughter they would get engaged. But they had just found out that they had a fiancée. They were very confused. No one told them. Even their older sister didn't know. And they got engaged against their will. their parents say We'll love each other soon.
Love each other? That's crazy!!!
It's not like shoujo manga to see you fall in love
How can a fiancée who's never talked to each other be in love?
When it's time to meet, both of you compliment each other.
seki : she was a women with very beautiful blue eye
kai : he’s very handsome man
Their parents had a long conversation with each other because they hadn’t seen each other for nearly 10 years, but Seki was bored and wasted his time. He noticed Kai's face turn red and she raised her hand to wave, probably because she wasn’t used to the weather of Japan. He asked parents permission to ask her to go for a walk together outside. Their parents saw it was the right time. Let them go out and talk, get to know each other personally.
When out of the adult eye, Seki takes Kai to a shady place instead.
seki : How are you? Is it better yet?
kai : Better now. Thank you seki-san.
seki : call me seki, I don't mind.
They both get to know each other. And there was an agreement not to say that *we were engaged* because it would cause chaos. they don't want to explain it, it's a waste of time.
They talked well at the beginning but didn't know why or some reason the two of them didn't get along. They often argued with each other (mostly over nonsense). Until now, they don't know. “Why do they like to argue with each other?”
seki/kai : It's only good in appearance, other than that it's not good at all!!!!
What is the cause? I didn't think but it's a very pointless reason.😂😂😂😂

Heavy Bakery - Chapter 20
MasterList / Kanami’s Profile /Previous Chapter
Chapter 20 - Friendly Match
“Ah, Kanami, you arrived early!” Sekibayashi smiles when he sees her, Wednesday afternoon “You seem in a good mood today.”
“And I am” she smiles, leaving her bag in its proper place “and ready to start warming up, are you available?”
“Haha, sorry milady, but after the student’s lesson I'm busy today”, he smiles a little pityingly at her “I need to train the more advanced ones, we're close to a tournament.”
“Oh, okay, is Jose available?” She tries, scratching her head.
“He is one of the big guys that will have to tone up, to the backstage fights…”
“Oh, okay, I can train alone.” she sighs. It wouldn't be too bad, she just wasn't wanting to do things by herself today.
“You can use the machines, at will” he smiles “Sorry, I should have warned you.”
“No, it’s alright.” she smiles back “can I watch too?”
“Yes you can. Ah, Ohma spoke to me. He said he wanted to train with us today.”
“Yeah, I’ve heard it” she then smiled “he booked with you?”
“So-so. As he said he had a fight scheduled yesterday, he might not be ready to do anything.”
This made Kanami shiver. Was he really hurt?
“But at least he won?” she asks on impulse.
He seems to look into a corner and smile.
“Why don't you ask him?” He nods with his head. Kanami frowns.
“You're making fun of me again, aren't you?” she makes a face “Seriously, if he's not there you owe me a punch…”
She turns around and, to her surprise, almost bumps into him. She had time only to stop the impact, before slamming his face into it.
“Oh, hi…” is what she replies. Sekibayashi laughs.
“Good afternoon,” he says, looking at her. She widens her eyes, taking a step back.
“Oh, good afternoon, Ohma” she scratches the back of her head, but stopping to watch him. He had a small bandage on his left chin, kind of purple around it, and she could feel that he had more strange things on his body, but his maroon and white sweatshirt prevented her from seeing the rest “Did you hurt yourself badly?” she asks, again on impulse.
“No” he managed a tiny smile “just a few scratches, as I promised.”
Sekibayashi raises an eyebrow, still listening to the conversation.
“Oh, don't you think it would be better to rest today?” She raises an eyebrow too, already worried.
He lets out a breath on a half-sigh “I'm fine, really. I can guarantee that my opponent came out much worse.”
“Okay…” she smiles with furrowed brows “but if you make the smallest flinch afterwards, don’t say I didn’t warn you” she teases, punching him lightly in the shoulder.
He gives a low chuckle in return.
“I want to hear you say that”, he looks at the giant “Sekibayashi, how are we? Do you still have a spot for the guest fighter in your class?”
“Of course, Ohma”, Seki smiles, “come on, the gang will show up soon. But seriously, nothing broken there?”
“No.”
“No weird palpitations?”
“Uh… no. The check up said zero problems. I'm fine.”
“All right”, he smiles satisfied “you can get ready then.”
“Can I watch?” she asks Sekibayashi.
“I was hoping you would see me, Kanami” Ohma says, smiling slightly “You said you wanted to, didn't you?”
Sekibayashi laughs, raising his eyebrows, as if it pleased him to hear that.
“Go to the locker room, seaweed head,” he says, still laughing. “You have ten minutes.”
He nodded, leaving the two of them. Sekibayashi looks at Kanami.
“Hey little lady.”
“Huh?” She blinks, realizing she was watching Ohma leave.
“You'll see him fighting, but then you'll practice yourself later, okay?” he laughs low “I don't want lazies in my gym. No, no. Fangirls have to go hard too, or else…”
Kanami feels her mouth open in indignation.
“I'm not a fangirl!”, she grunts “Leave me be, dude.”
And she leaves, heading towards the interior of the gym. The giant laughs again. Few things escapes the Wrestler.
“Hey Kanami!”
“Good morning, Ms Kanami!”
“You look great today, have you pulled iron lately?”
“Iron, dough, garbage cans and bags of flour, sweetie!” She responds when the guys from SJPW greet her “what about you girls?”
She already had a good amount of time training there, so it turned out that all of Sekibayashi's students knew her, more or less. Kanami, the butch, Kanami the brave, the kick queen… They once tried to call her Leg-Choke-Kanami, but Jose and Sekibayashi soon put a stop to that, before it got any worse, due to the sexual implications of that. Anyway, the nickname that caught the most was Baker, precisely because of the pun of her kneading others like one would knead bread. And of course, because she was in fact one.
She listened to the conversations with others, laughing awkwardly at snide comments about her person. “Men, am I right?” she thought to herself.
Ohma emerged from the locker room, wearing his usual compression shorts and regular shorts on top. He reached the center of the gym with the ring, and heard the rumble of the other fighters. He soon saw her, practically surrounded by creatures that were easily taller and more muscular than she was, and she was responding to comments, sometimes with a fake smile.
He felt something strange. He normally didn't give a shit, but something about that scene had his senses on edge. He noticed that he didn't quite like the way they were looking at her, but he turned away. She'd easily take them down if she bothered, so there's no reason to want to protect her. She wasn't like Kaede or another lady he knew.
“Ahhh, our guest has arrived!” the booming voice of the giant Wrestler resounded in the hall, drawing the attention of the others “can we start?”
“Sure” Ohma gives the go-ahead.
“Today, folks, you will test your strength with a true backstage fighter. I think you already know this guy”, he points to Ohma who was getting up and entering the ring, going through the rubber bands ,“enjoy that he's a little damaged from yesterday, so he won't be so heavy with you.”
A few chuckles from the students, but then realizing who he was. Some gave a gasp of surprise, others a whistle of admiration, others were a little apprehensive…the reactions varied. But she listened… Apparently his epithet was “the Ashura”, a type of combat deva.
Kanami, however, couldn't help but get a good look at him. With only the double shorts, the fighter looked even more well-toned and ripped than when he was fully clothed. Six pack? Forget it, this was a range of eight mountains, his pecs looking like two plates of armor. He didn't wear protectors for his hands, or for his feet, or anything other than the shorts and the washed face of someone who was just passing by.. well, except for a bandage on his right arm and a small tape on his chest. He stretches and warms his muscles, and she felt herself blush when she noticed he looked at her too.
He didn't say anything, just nodded at her and turned his attention to the instructor.
“… And then we'll test your level with someone in the ranks. And so, Ohma, who goes first?”
“It doesn't matter to me” he says, without fuss “ask Kanami to decide, she's the maid of honor here, right?”
Kanami blushed at the mention, and the others looked at her.
“Uh, does he know you, Kanami?”
“Woow” and variations surrounded her.
Sekibayashi laughed.
“Okay, the little star will choose the lucky one” he looks at Kanami “send your blessings, Baker”
Kanami blushes more, when mentioned by her joke-epithet. She looks at Ohma, who seemed to be enjoying the confusion. What a motherfucker...
“Go Kanny, choose” one of them said.
“Okay… you go, Kiba” she points.
“Me?!” Kiba's eyes widened.
“You called me Kanny, and I don’t have intimacy with you!”, she jokes, laughing “will you chicken?”
The Kiba guy gets up and leaves, mumbling.
Sekibayashi laughed again. Today he was in a great mood.
“Great, Kiba, I enjoyed seeing that. Go, boy.”
The two fighters took their positions. The giant came out of the ring and gave the signal to start. Okay, she wanted to see if that was all.
And… that was all. The next second the guy was lying on the floor, on his belly. Kanami blinked, not understanding.
“Huh?!” she muttered, while the others roared with adrenaline, making various comments.
“Damn, boooy!”
“No wonder he's a Kengan legend!”
“Fuckin’ Tokita…”
“Next!“ Ohma shouts, looking at her, with a half smile of satisfaction.
She was still unresponsive.
“Ah…okay… eh…. you!” She points to another guy, faster.
“Yaaaay!” he went to the ring excited.
And he came back staggering. The third took a little longer, but still, it came out without even dropping a blow on the fighter. Kanami was still trying to figure out what the hell had happened. Then the fourth, which still managed to hit a blow on the shoulder but was most worthily invited to kiss the floor.
Sekibayashi smiles, that was really interesting.
“Someone who has some resistance, please”, Ohma teases, still jumping in his combat pose “You’re making me feel ashamed.”
This seemed to infuriate some of the students. One of them, similar in size to Jose, came forward to the ring.
“Oooohh, a bigger fish?”, he teases, smiling a little.
“Let's see who's a fish and who's not, you walking seaweed” - the man teases back.
“The seaweed has already dropped four of your friends,” he smiled more.
Sekibayashi gives the go-ahead, and the guys start to surround each other, Ohma who landed the first blow, and finally Kanami could see his footwork, he was about to punch when the man blocked.
“Hah, I’ve seen this one before…”
Tokita retaliates with a kick, and the student continues to block.
“Hey, seaweed head, are you getting slower?” he teased. Ohma ignores it, continuing to slash and slash and slash, getting blocked by the wrestler with ease “what's this, are you taking it easy on me, bro? Don't do that, it's embarrassing…”
“I'm not taking it easy…” He then dodged the fighter's punch so fast that it looked like the man's fist went through him. Ohma appeared next to him and said “this is a class” and punches the fighter in the liver, taking him to the ground “and it's no use if no one can see what I'm doing.”
Kanami blinks. Was he going slower because he realized she couldn't see? Was he showing off?! She felt her cheeks hot, in denial. Okay, now she could see that he was good, but that was an exaggeration…
“Aaaand it’s finished!” Sekibayashi said to the fighters “Tokita won.”
The man was squirming on the floor. Ohma smiles a little.
“Sekibayashi, these are still beginners, right?” he looks at the giant, who laughs.
“Yes, they are the lower ones” he lifts the fallen opponent “The more experienced ones are back there toning up for the upcoming matches.”
“Ahhh, that's why” he smiles, while the fighter who got punched muttered a "son of a bitch...".
Kanami just didn't get redder, because she decided to drink water.
“Well, the introductions are over. Everyone here agrees that the guy is a badass.” The giant then enters the ring “now, let's go to a friendly match, Tokita-san, just like old times.”
“Old for you, old man. For me it was yesterday” he laughs, taking his position.
“Okay, now we have to have a referee.”
“What about your little star?” Ohma teases, looking at Kanami, who was in front of the water filter.
“What?!” Kanami widens her eyes. Sekibayashi laughs out loud.
“Today you're lucky, huh, Kana.”
“Give me a break!” She yells to the idiots who were laughing “It looks like won’t take it easy on you later.”
Some of them stopped, others continued laughing. She was going to slap Ohma for this embarrassment. She sighs, she had nothing else to do.
“I will,” she says, and, of course, the male audience squeals of satisfaction.
“Hey kids, respect the Baker” Seki scolds, as she approaches.
“Relax, Seki-san, they're just happy to see smooth legs and wide hips at least once in their lives.” she sticks her tongue out at them, making some of them chuckle.
She approaches and then enters the “character”, “I want a clean game, boys, the moment I notice anything out of the rules I stop the game on the spot.”
“We just have to make sure she doesn't see” Seki teases.
“Hah, try to hide it from me” Ohma smiles.
Kanami ignores it.
“Take your positions!” she then lowers her arm in a quick movement, “Fight!”
And she barely had time to get away, Ohma was already at full speed behind the giant. Sounds of violent punches follow, and she sees Sekibayashi enduring them all.
“Hahahaha, keep throwing those little punches, boy?”
“I haven't even started yet!” Ohma laughs, and Seki grabs the fighter, throwing him to the ground then he avoids the fall with a somersault, and soon he was on his feet, hitting again.
Poor Kanami almost didn't see what was happening. She tried to concentrate, but one felt like flames on the ground, and the other felt like an impassable rock.
She can see Ohma throwing a kick, and Seki barely blocks, counterattacking, however, with a punch with one of those huge hands. It would have been an accurate attack if the Seaweed Head hadn't deflected the punch's trajectory, and returned it in the same measure in the giant's face, full on.
The sound of flesh being beaten nearly made Kanami shiver in the base. But the fighter laughed.
Holy shit, he laughed! The guy just got a hell of a punch that would throw him away, but he took it like it was nothing. And he still laughed.
Motherfucker.
“Hahahahaha, I already know that toy of yours there” Sekibayashi had a split lip, but his teeth were all showing in a smile “Niko Style, Redirection kata with Adamantine.”
“Heh, apparently you've been doing homework.” He smiles back.
Kanami blinks. Niko style? She had never heard of it.
Before she could say anything, the two went back to exchanging punches. She was having trouble keeping up. Heck, was that two humans or two monsters in the ring?
She felt helpless again, but she couldn't stop focusing there.
Then Sekibayashi threw a punch that hit the bandage on his right arm. Ohma hesitated, closing one eye, but he was still on his feet.
She was going to say something but he interrupts “I'm fine, let me continue” he goes back to the pose.
Kanami couldn't do anything, if she stopped the fight there, he might be upset with wounded pride, but if she didn't stop, what would become of his injuries?
“I told you, but okay” she nods, looks at the two and signals again.
And more exchanges of punches, kicks, elbows… Kanami didn't want to see that anymore, but someone would have to land a blow for her to stop, at the very least.
Sekibayashi manages to grab Ohma by the leg, as he blocks a kick from him, but the man uses his other leg to hit the wrestler in the face, causing him to stagger.
“Hahahahaha” Sekibayashi laughs “I'm not done yet, Tokita.”
He grabs Ohma's legs and spins him in the air, causing him to land with his right shoulder on the floor. The thud of the impact nearly made Kanami yelp. That must have hurt.
“Ughn.” He stands up, as if it's nothing. Holy shit, what the hell are they made of?! “You still have tricks up your sleeve, you old gorilla.”
“Always creating new ones, incomplete sushi,” he laughs.
Ohma adjusts his arms, his smile turning devilish. She had never seen him like this.
“Hah, I have mine too” he shoots towards the giant, who was about to prepare to defend himself when he seemed to disappear before Kanami's eyes, and reappears behind the giant, hitting the bigger one behind the knees, forcing them to bend. Taking advantage of the momentum and that the giant ended up ducking, he uses the palm of his hand to strike behind the back of Sekibayashi's head, who, taken by surprise, falls to the ground with a crash.
Kanami sees no choice but to raise her hand.
“Stop!” she announces “and the winner is… Tokita Ohma!” she points to the wavy haired fighter. The audience cheered with the show, whistles and applause, as well as roars and different comments.
She checked on Sekibayashi, he was fine, as far as possible, getting up.
“Holy shit, Tokita…” he grunts, getting up with effort “you could paralyze someone with this…”
“Sorry, Seki” he helps the giant to get up “I couldn't lose this…” he smiles, and looks at Kanami sideways for a second.
Sekibayashi noticed, chuckled low.
“Alright, seaweed-head, I think the demonstration is good enough” he shakes the fighter's hand “that's it folks, classes are suspended today. The pros are going to train in the gym today, so the rest, get out of here, shoo!”
There was a happy commotion in the students, and they soon began to disband. Just like kids after school, Kanami noted, just like Sekibayashi had said before. She smiles slightly, but then started looking from one to the other, still worried.
“Are you… are you two alright?!” she asks.
“Of course” Sekibayashi cracks his neck, “This wee kid hit a point on one of my nerves, but it's over now…”
“If I had done it hard, you would have passed out” Ohma flexes his fingers “but I must admit, you're getting better too.”
“It's for never to lose to you again” Sekibayashi laughs, “go then, train in the machines or whatever. Now I'm going to need to prepare for a backstage fight.”
“Alright” Ohma leaves the ring. Kanami looks at the giant, and then bows a little in a curtsy, before jumping out of the ring and following Ohma.
“Frankly…” she mutters, when she re-bandages Ohma's arm, after he had taken a shower “you were injured and still decided to fight? What kind of crazy dumbass are you?”
He laughs a little, looking at her, “You said you wanted to see me fighting…”
“Not this way!” she complains, he seemed to laugh more.
“Well, it's my daily life” he lets himself be medicated, for some reason or because he has less nerve endings than usual, he wasn't feeling much, Kanami didn't know. Either this madman liked pain, which, after what she'd seen, she didn't doubt it.
“Yes, but it's not a daliy thing that should be every day”, she scoffs, sighing “you'd close entire pharmacies like that.”
“Well, I've closed restaurants, what's one more trade?” he still seemed under some endorphin effect, that was a fact. He still had the corners of his mouth turned up.
“It's different, you bottomless punching bag!” She raises her hands in frustration.
“You're too worried” he laughs “If I didn't know you, I'd say you like me…”
“Of course I like you!”, she lets go. He looks at her a little surprised. She then backs away, turning very red. Heck, she would have to get out of this quickly. Think fast, Kanami.  “Ah… I mean, how couln’t I? I owe you my life… seeing you hurt gives me a huge pain in my chest… even more when I can't do anything to help except patch you up.”
He looks ahead, shrugging his shoulders. She continues:
“I would hate to see my friends like that. Even more... when I'm used to protect…”
He smiles “and I'm used to surviving…” he mutters, ducking his head as she applies more medicine in a few spots.
Kanami didn't listen, lost in thought. “That was close” she thought. She couldn't say anything to him. She didn't want to make more trouble than necessary, he already had a rope in his neck, tied up too much for her to mess with another knot… she would rather be the one to untie the knots. A safe haven, someone to count on, not a crazy person… not to mention that she didn't want to die for that same crazy person in question… No way, thanks. There is no male worth that much.
“That's it, I'm done” she walks away, touching his shoulder “I think it's good for you to rest and accompany me in the exercises today... heal a little, before teaching me anything…”
“I can teach now” he looks at her, standing up quickly.
“No sir!”  she answers firmly, pushing him back to sit, “you will be quiet, at most helping me with the weights and seeing if I'm in a correct posture. The lessons of this karate-kata-niko you have, you can leave it for later, right?”
He looks at her, his eyes inquisitive and a little confused, especially after she's pushed him to sit down again.
"Okay…" he said, his voice low. She nods, walking away.
“That’s it, let’s start. Or don't you want to see me embarrassing myself pulling iron?”
He watches her leave the room, still a little stunned. “This creature just told me what to do… and I obeyed?!” was the thought that came. His cheeks heated, he ran a hand through his hair, and sighed.
“Holy shit,” he muttered, feeling his heart dance in his chest.
Kanami's training ended without incident, Ohma wasn't very versed in gym machines so he just watched. When she asked what he did for exercise, he exemplified some calisthenics exercises, where he used his own body weight for training.
“I also do shadow boxing out and underwater, and other stuff”, he comments, helping her do sit-ups “later I'll show you if you want.”
“Oh, it would be nice,” she smiles. “It's been a long time since I went to a pool, or river.”
"Someday, then." He looks at her, standing up while she continues. In her gym clothes, a small sports top that bravely held her breasts, and a pair of leggings, he was finally able to see, beyond her arms, the rest of her toned body. And the scar from the stab wound she'd taken months ago. It made him feel a little weird. A drop-shaped pale mark in that half-pink sea that was her skin, nothing else beyond the lines of her muscles. Unlike his own skin, which everywhere he could find an old battle scar or two, now quite thin due to their age. He even still had marks that Lihito left, from his trademarked “razor’s edge”, on his arm and leg. Old ones already, but still there.
A strange thought came to the fighter's head:
She was so…smooth, to someone or her caliber. Yes, she had calloused knuckles, but were nowhere near like his own, fingers that had twisted at weird angles and he'd almost lost them at some point. She looked something very delicate, even though she was a larger woman than most he had seen before on the streets. A very unusual contradiction for him. Strong but still fragile, confident but still shy… Not strongest, and yet, skilled and certainly with a trace of an intelligence he didn't even know he could match.
Was that what made her so special to him?
Or was there something else? The cakes, the breads, those magical fingers that could transform anything that it touches? Okay, that was an important part. That's what made him curious...
But the rest, the beating show part, was what caught his attention.
“What's going on?” She asked him, while drinking water. Ohma seemed to wake up from a reverie.
“Oh, yeah… I was about to black out… watching you exercise without me doing anything made me sleepy”, he tried to find an excuse.
Kanami pouted, getting close “sorry if it's so boring for you…”
“Consider that I also am tired and injured.”
"Then you admit you are." She looks at him, half triumphantly, but too close to his face… instinctively he put his hand out and pulled it back a little. She left right away, “oh, sorry, I was intrusive… no need to hold my face, I’ll back off.”
Her reaction was different from what he was used to, he looked at her, not quite understanding what had happened, but he took his hand away “sorry, force of habit…”
“I’ll ask, next time”, she nods, understanding, even though she didn't know exactly why, “so… I'm going to shower and change my clothes. Shall we meet at the entrance?”
“Uh… right…” he watched her go, his feet wanting to keep up with her, until he remembered what “shower” meant. Then he forced himself to turn his body in the opposite direction, toward the entrance, to wait.
Twenty minutes later, Kanami was back, with her normal everyday clothes, those jeans, the baby-look shirt and the leather jacket where she kept the documents in the inside pockets. Ohma still remembered it, since he'd helped her in that alley behind the bakery.
“Let's go?” She smiles as he watches her approach.
“Let's go.” He walks with her, out of the gym.
I was still in this never-ending thoughts on her when “Hey,” she said after a while.
“Hm?” he looks at her. She smiles, he raises an eyebrow “what is it?”
She almost laughed, “Are you hungry?”
He couldn't help but smile at those magical words.
“Always.”

PART 10
Tumblr media
“What the hell is this, Jang Taeyoung?!”
He expected it. The moment she came into his office aggressively putting down the dammit recorder onto his desk, he knew then what explanation she’s seeking. “Half of the stocks. Really, Jang Taeyoung? You’re giving that imbécil a share on my Nightclub who f*cking harmed me, and now without consulting me? Por favor! Not this time, cabrón.
Hearing her curses in multilingual, he can literally see her true explosion. She’s totally a walking onslaught right now. “Jang Taeyoung, are you even listening to me? Bullsh*t!” She may be berserk with the situation already, but for him seems to be a chill-out. He was just in front of her comfortably sitting with cross legs, leaning by the headrest of his seat. And she’s totally not enjoying it!
“You’re overthinking too much, Sung Eunyoung. Chillax. We’re not in a hurry.”
“We’re not? F*ck off, Jang Taeyoung. We’re talking business here, and you’re acting like a jerk who was just playing around recklessly. Don’t try me, bastardo. You know what I’m capable of.”
Thus an insulting smirk came into him. “Tss. As if I need your permission woman. I have my own mind, Sung Eunyoung. I can do what I want. Why does it always have to do with you?” piercing eyes are now bore to him. “You know that isn’t the answer I’m looking for, Jang Taeyoung. Can you just cut the chase, please!”
“My apologies, Sung Eunyoung. But this time is an exemption. I won’t give you any. My bad.”
His firm decision which only made her much furious. “What’s wrong with you?” needing his attention indeed, as she fiercely grabs his arm the moment she follows him by the mini stall bar of his office pouring a glass of tequila of his own. “You’re always blunt, Jang Taeyoung. Then why so sudden you’re being uncooperative?!” But her continues banters doesn’t give him even a flinch. He was just there doing what he intended to do. Not until she forcefully seizes his hold from his glass and throw it right from the spot, creating a scatter of its liquid and pieces on the floor which took him by surprise.
“Now, tell me the g*ddammit plan of yours loco, or am I going to do something beyond your imagination. All you need to do is to answer my big why, is that even hard to share? Damn you!”
She’s throwing all her daggers already, still he won’t do the same. Only to be answered by his innocent remark that seems to be sarcasm she did not like. “Hey. Halt there, Sung. Please, count to three before you do something impulsive. It will only put you on danger when that happens.”
He just gradually held hands on between her shoulders as if the only support for her to calm. Well screw him, it’s useless for her anyway. She only dodges it by her hands as well, yet too late for her another banters for their unsolved conversation interrupted by the knock of his door whom he initially welcomes, tuning the face of his assistant.
“It’s time, Boss.”
“Thank you, Jae. Just give me a minute.”
Their only mere interaction before his assistant eventually went out, as he turns to her again. “Now I have an important appointment to tag along. As much as I want to spare a time with you, I need to go. But fine for the sake of your mind, I might just give you a hint maybe.” As he leans closer to her ear. “The reason why I did it? Simple. I saw a very valuable opportunity that even you can’t imagine.” By then he leans away, settles a hand in his pocket. “Just trust me, Sung Eunyoung. I promise, you would rather love it in the end. Wait for my surprise on that day.”
“Then expect our partnership, void.”
Her cold declaration that he didn’t even bother to be threatened. He was confident instead. Peeling a piece of his gum. “You wouldn’t do that.”
Tumblr media
“Now, I really have to go. Be good, okay?” as he caresses her cheek for the last time before finally deciding to go out, shutting the door, leaving her with immense frustration. “Michin seki.” Her last curse through it where the man who just gave her headache went out.
This is truly one of few moments where his stubbornness left her fuming. He’s at it again. The moment her ears led to the pieces of her recorder, she knew she’d going to deal with him again. But for some reason, today seems to be different for her. He never gave her idea which he always does even if it still against her verdict. She really felt something off this time like his unspoken plan is her final calling to snap out. She’s already full of him that she had to make the decision as soon as now.
Tending to her phone finally, facing the caller who have also occupied her already messy headache. “You think I can’t do it, Jang. You left me with no choice then.” Accepting the call without a doubt. It’s really now or never for her certainly.
~
Tumblr media
“So? Are you now convinced, Mr. Kim?”
Her first set of words the moment she ended off her recorder, only to get an unbelievable reaction from the latter. “You have always surprises me, Ms. Sung. One moment, I’ll be your mortal enemy, the next day you’re not. What should we call this day then, eh?”
Turning her business look to the man by the passenger side, as she said. “Let’s just say camaraderie, Mr. Prosecutor.”
Thus a sneering laugh came in. “Camaraderie it is, Ms. Sung. Then shall I know what makes you decide right now?”
“Because I cannot attain it anymore?” A slight mockery from her chosen words which just stupidly believe by the man. “So are you saying, you intentionally made partnership to him for a reason of busting his flaws in the end? Is that it, Ms. Sung?”
By the mention of him, she can feel again the boiling fuse of her heart as the man beside her tries to fish her still. So with a cold nuance she retaliates. “Feel free to sum up your own conclusion, Mr. Kim. If that makes your thought relieve. Just make sure one thing for me, and it is to corner him for he had fool me enough.”
“Alright. Expecting it by tomorrow?”
“Just wait for my call.”
Left with a shaking head. The prosecutor then stops his catching schemes. He can’t really get her in every angle for no reason. A true wise businesswoman indeed. He admits. And with a surrendering sigh, he speaks. “Guess he do cause you too much troubles then. Though I still wonder why do you have to deal with a troubleshooter, considering how big you are already in the corporate world. Right, Ms. Martin?”
And yes, this prosecutor is well known her other identity. The only thing that had halt him for getting her in the interrogation room was the lack of evidence he can’t seize no matter tactics he does. Loopholes to loopholes that can’t seem to perceive which end him being a barking dog of her instead. Poor him who had to only hear an insulting laugh from her.
“Really? From you who had known me working with corrupt officials and so, a simple troubleshooter doesn’t even slip your mind? What a lame excuse Mr. Prosecutor. I think your brain needs a rebooting too. Your kind of deduction seems to be out of its time already.”
“Crazy b*tch.” With a last shut from her passenger side door, the poor prosecutor went out with a frustrating face surely. Opposite to how her smirking face, enjoying its remark. “I already know that, sir. No need to falter.”
Her last unheard answer before finally backing up her gear to leave the still standing man outside.

FEATURE: You Watched Way More Anime On Nickelodeon Than You Thought You Did
Tumblr media
At some point, we as anime fans all realize that our first foray into anime was a lot earlier than we first thought. Whether via Speed Racer, Star Blazers, or Robotech, homes in the second half of the 20th century were surprisingly full of televised anime. If you were a Nickelodeon household, this was especially true.
Young viewers in the 1980s had their fair share of imported TV via the channel, from Britain's Danger Mouse to Canada's You Can't Do That on Television. But it's the crop of cartoons lots of us remember fondly, many of them issuing not only from Japan, but in particular from some of Japan's most famous creators — creators whom, as 21st-century fans, we remember for other shows entirely.
Tumblr media
While Haim Saban and Shuki Levy may have been the names printed indelibly on our young brains at the time, today we're looking at five Nickelodeon classics straight from Japan, and the big names who shaped our childhood.
  Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics
Hey, come along and join the fun! For many (including myself), the earwormy intro to Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics is a warm memory. The anthology series premiered in Japan in 1987, then in North America two years later. Despite the name, it actually adapted folk tales both within and outside of the Grimm canon. You could expect to see animated takes on Snow White and Cinderella, along with the ones that tend to slip through the cracks, like Iron Hans and The Devil's Grandmother.
If the series feels a bit World Masterpiece Theater-like, that's for good reason: it was directed by Hiroshi Saito, who directed Tom Sawyer and much of Rascal the Raccoon for the long-running series. And there's a familiar name on the localization side, too: anime voice actor/director/writer/producer Tony Oliver was the script supervisor for the dub.
The Adventures of the Little Prince
Tumblr media
Nostalgia for The Adventures of the Little Prince comes at you one of two ways if you're a child of the '70s or '80s — this one isn't the one featuring Bob Fosse as a tap-dancing snake.
The anime series isn't based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's classic story so much as it is on its young hero: the little boy who lives on the asteroid B 612 with three volcanoes and a rose. We hear the Prince discuss travels to other planets and a few adventures on Earth, but the anime expands this even further. The Prince catches a star to Earth and travels around Europe, learning more about people and helping out where he can. (The English localization was altered to imply that the Prince made short hops to Earth and elsewhere, returning home between episodes.)
Mecha anime fans will be happy to know that director Takeyuki Kanda (Vifam, Mellowlink, and the first part of Gundam 08th MS) was among the many directors who worked on the series, as was Mobile Suit Gundam character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. Even better news for fans? If you want to return to the series, it's available on Amazon Prime!
  Maple Town
Not to be confused with Sylvanian Families, the other line of forest-dwelling anthropomorphic animal adventures to come from Japan. Originally titled Maple Town Monogatari, the series was created by Chifude Asakura — a contributing writer for several series including Dear Brother, Glass Mask, and the 1989 remake of Sally the Witch.
The sweet series follows Patty and the rest of the Hoperabbit family as they settle in Maple Town as mail carriers, making friends with the rest of the animals there. Series director Junichi Sato would go on to direct series like Sgt. Frog, Princess Tutu, and Hugtto! PreCure, as well as writing magical girl manga Prétear and directing its anime adaptation.
  Belle and Sebastian
Not to be confused with the Scottish rock band of the same name ... though their name and this series do share roots.
Belle and Sebastian is yet another series that technically doesn't fall under the World Masterpiece Theater banner, but has both similar source material and some shared production staff (including character designer Shuichi Seki). The series is based on the 1965 novel by Cécile Aubry about a young boy and his Great Pyrenees named Belle. Originally aired in Japan in 1981 as Meiken Jolie, it came to Nickelodeon in 1984 and the UK's CBBC in 1989.
Director Keiji Hayakawa steered this production, within a few years of two of his other big directorial jobs: Prefectural Earth Defense Force and 26 episodes of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura.

Decades before Miraculous Ladybug, France and Japan teamed up for another fantastical adventure series. The Mysterious Cities of Gold had airtime in the US, Japan (as Taiyou no Ko Esteban), and France (as Les Mystérieuses Cités d'Or). The series brought together France's DiC Audiovisuel and Japan's Pierrot (the company behind Naruto, Mr. Osomatsu, and many more).
The 16th-century science-fantasy adventure brings together the children Esteban, Zia, and Tao — each of whom is searching for a piece of their family or past. As they navigate with the explorer Mendoza in search of one of the world's Seven Cities of Gold, they find much more ... in terms of history, mythology, and ancient technology.
Hisayuki Toriumi (Gatchaman) was one of the series's directors, and composer Ryuji Sasai (Windaria, Final Fantasy Legend III) joined Saban and Levy in contributing music to the series.

Ultimately, whether or not we "knew" what we were watching at the time is irrelevant — what matters is the enjoyment they brought us in their time, and the fond memories we have now. But it's kind of nice to know that creators whose work we love now have been a part of our lives for years.
What are some of your favorite early anime — Nickelodeon or otherwise? Let's reminisce in the comments!

Note
As noted in Amitie and the Girl of Love!?, the manzai gags had to be tweaked in order to make sense in English. Were there any other times changes had to be made in that regard?
There are other times, though we do our best to preserve meaning if it’s simply pun wordplay.
For example, in Chronicle, there’s a section where Raffina mentions the phrase “two flies in one sap”. In Japanese she actually uses an idiom that translates exactly to “two birds in one stone”, which means the same thing in English, but we had to change the nouns to keep up with Amitie’s mishearing of her phrase.
Raffina: (…) いっせきにちょう isseki nichou (1 stone, 2 birds)
Amitie: いっせ……きに ちょう? ちょうちょが いっせいに 木にとまった!? isse…ki ni chou? chouchou ga isseki ni ki ni tomatta?!
Here Amitie mishears Raffina’s words to be the adverb isse “at once”, and for ki to be separate as the noun “tree” instead of seki as “rock”. Then, taking the ni which actually means “two” to be the location particle ni, and chou (how the kanji for bird is read in this case) to mean chouchou, “butterfly”, she comes up with: All at once…butterflies on trees? All the butterflies landed on the tree at once?!
There was no way to keep this wordplay in English if we used birds, so we did the next best thing and used flies.
Raffina: In any case, if we find the stone and Ms. Rulue, it’ll be but two flies in one slap.
Amitie: Butterflies in one sap…? All the butterflies landed on a single tree sap?!
Another example with Yu’s puns:
Yu: つごうが いいから レッつごう~! 目指すはだいざだ いざ~!
This has 2 puns: tsugou (condition) and rettsugou (”let’s go” said in English); daiza (pedestal) and the copula that ends the first sentence da combined with iza (now), which makes it sound like she repeated daiza twice. Literally translated, it would be something like The conditions are good, so let’s go~! Our goal is the pedestal! Come now~!
Our pun version: We’re in high spirits, so let’s gho-st to the pedestal~! No more pede-stalling~!
Here we use ghost puns for the first part instead of trying to make “condition” sound like “let’s go”, while the second part preserves the pedestal wordplay.
When it comes to jokes that strictly have to do with Japanese culture, however, we have no choice but to change them. The most glaring example comes from Witch’s route in 20th Anniversary, when she reveals what potion she was trying to make.
The Japanese says “a potion that will make someone not afraid of manjuu”. This is a reference to a famous Rakugo routine which tells the story of a man who pretends to be afraid of manjuu (a Japanese confection) to get free food out of his prankster friends (who purposefully bring him manjuu to scare him). We went with a reference to a fairytale for our translation, rendering it “a potion that will make a goose stop laying golden eggs”.
