AITA for wanting to be the best?

Bear with me here, as I have some explaining to do beforehand. To begin, I (M, adult) have always been interested in the culinary arts. So when I opened up my very own sushi restaurant, it was no surprise that it quickly became ranked #1 in the entire world. But last year, the judges suddenly thought that my traditional recipes were ‘boring’ and ‘unoriginal.’ Can you believe that?! MS (which is what I’m going to be calling my restaurant here, as anonymity is quite important to me) was number one for fifteen years straight. And if you think that I’m going to let some…some FUSION restaurant take my title, you’d be dead wrong.

I scoured the world in search of a secret ingredient, one that would take my sushi to the next level. And in the dark depths of the ocean, I found it: an angler fish-like creature that produced many, many eggs. When consumed, these eggs would taste like your favourite food, so when I crushed them up and added their juices to my dishes, MS quickly rose back up to its elite #1 status. The whole world couldn’t get enough of the stuff!

…one small issue, though. Anyone who consumed the eggs would turn into a monster when exposed to moonlight. I should know. A good chef always samples their ingredients. But why would I let such a small side effect affect MY fame? And, I’ll admit, I miiight have let most of my staff try the eggs as well. It was actually quite interesting seeing what they’d become (no two monsters were alike.) And as far as I know, they are unaware of the changes they go through each night, so it’s not like it affects them mentally.

The monsters have quite the taste for human flesh, so I recently had to do a group interview for some new chefs. A few of these chefs managed to learn the truth about my secret ingredient, and are most likely plotting against me now. Yes, my actions may have been dubious at points, but am I truly an asshole for wanting to have the best restaurant in the world?

NYX #1 Explores Life After Krakoa

Hey! It's been awhile since I posted but I'm still around! Late July I did a reivew for Graphic Policy on NYX #1. I posted the link but I'm also going to try something new and post the text of the review here on Tumblr! I also would just like to add that as of this posting the series has gone up to issue #3 and so far it's my favorite book in the From the Ashes relaunch! Anyhow with all that said I'll leave you with the review!

How do you cope with the loss of paradise? This is the question at the heart of the From the Ashes relaunch of X-Men, and no title so far exemplifies that question more than NYX. The mutant island nation of Krakoa is no more and its diaspora is left to pick up the pieces. And like so many of the world’s diasporas, many Krakoans find their new home in New York City, holding onto what community they have left.

This first issue of NYX is told largely through the perspective of Ms. Marvel. She is an interesting character to hinge the first issue on seeing as she never quite got to experience the promise of Krakoa and is still exploring her newfound mutant identity. Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly pick up the thread of Kamala attending college courses in NYC that was established in her last run of solos. The school that once was receiving funding from an anti-mutant hate group now is host to a ethnic studies course on Krakoa and its diaspora, taught by Xavier’s own Prodigy, now going by Professor Alleyne. Kamala is attending this course alongside her new friend and Prodigy’s former classmate at Xavier’s, Sophie of the Stepford Cuckoos. Other Xavier’s alumni like Anole and Laura Kinney the Wolverine also make appearances in the  comic, as a bartender and vigilante respectively. Seeing Kamala bounce off between these characters is fun and interesting. Alongside these more positive budding relationships Kamala runs into several threats in this issue, one being a anti-mutant group called the “Truthseekers” and another being the mysterious self proclaimed Krakoan dressed in a mix of Magneto and Professor X’s Krakoan costumes, who may or may not have a connection to members of the books cast that should provide for some interesting drama. 

This book should be a particular treat for fans of the Academy X run of comics, that subsect of the X-Men fandom have long been asking for a book that centers around characters from that series and NYX seems like the answer to their prayers. 

I find myself in a curious position vis à vis this book. I myself am a twenty-something queer New Yorker college student. The characters in this book are largely teenager to twenty-something allegorically (and in some cases literally) queer New Yorker college students who are members of a diaspora. This is a setup that is quite similar to my own life. Thus I feel a certain draw to this book that’s subject matter so closely relates to my lived experience. I will admit to getting a kick out of seeing the imfamous Highline sculpture, the Vessel in the issue. I eagerly anticipate seeing more NYC landmarks throughout the following issues. The characters feel pretty authentic to my lived experience, Lanzing and Kelly pretty solidly land the voice of my generation. 

The art by Francesco Mortarino feels like a step up from his work on Avengers, the first page in particular is quite stunning, partly due to Raul Angulo’s quite excellent colors. The characters look appropriately youthful and the rendering of NYC is well done. I’d compare Mortarino’s faces to Luciano Vecchio’s work, but while it’s similar in the angler nature of the faces it’s still suitably different and it’s own thing. In general the issue doesn’t have so much visual spectacle but the art team makes it a compelling visual treat. 

Overall NYX #1 isn’t the most flashy of first issues but it’s laying down a lot of interesting tracks, the characters aren’t really a team yet but honestly I think that’s not exactly what the book is going for. NYX seems to be telling a story about a group of young mutants finding their place in a world post the fall of their homeland, and it does a pretty damn compelling job doing it. This is definitely a book to keep an eye on.

Fall 2024 ANIME: What I'm watching

There are other shows this season I'm watching just casually, though, without committing to every episode like Negative Positive Angler and that one about the villainess who goes down in history.

And others that I've also dropped from serious watch but sometimes sneak a peek on spoilers like Blue Box, Yakuza Fiance and the one about the damsel and the dragon emperor.

I dropped the Ms. Servant as well. I watched until episode 2, then I didn't have time to watch more but decided to look on spoilers on the episodes I'd missed and that convinced me. I wanted a wholesome slice of life and the author ruined that for me in episode 4. So I don't want anymore of it!

Now to my spoiler talk about the shows I'm enjoying:

Let's start with Murai in Love. Initially, I thought maybe the animation is too bad for me to like it, but I accepted the style pretty quickly. For this kind of romantic comedy, the lazy animation works. It even matches the wacky humor. I can see myself liking this show as much as I do the live-action drama, by the end of it. Hopefully, it will end where the manga does, although I currently don't know the manga's official ending.

I also would prefer that the author started to write this manga into its final arc. Like, there's only so much of "who's gonna get the girl" you can stretch before the story gets boring.

As for Nina the Starry Bride, since the manga is ongoing, I can only hope for there to be at least a second season of the anime to make sure most of what there is of the manga thus far is adapted. I really want to see not only the Nina x Sett ship more developed but also the acknowledged rivalry between Azure and Sett take place. I'm not sure how much we can get of that in only 12 episodes. Nina and Sett will meet for the first time on the 5th ep, which means there's only 2/3 left of the anime runtime to build up so many things besides what I most wanna see. There has to be a second seasons announcement regardless of how far the 1st season adapts!! One can hope haha.

UPDATE: Looking at the illustrated book pages in the outro sequence, I think this anime season will cover a lot of what I wanna see. Based on those, my guess is that it will stop at the point in which Sett realizes Nina has loved "the messenger" Azure all this time, and upon feeling angry for perceiving she betrayed him, Sett becomes destructive and revengeful. Cut to 2nd season.
