When Facebook came for your battery, feudal security failed
When George Hayward was working as a Facebook data-scientist, his bosses ordered him to run a ânegative test,â updating Facebook Messenger to deliberately drain usersâ batteries, in order to determine how power-hungry various parts of the apps were. Hayward refused, and Facebook fired him, and he sued:
https://nypost.com/2023/01/28/facebook-fires-worker-who-refused-to-do-negative-testing-awsuit/
If youâd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, hereâs a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/05/battery-vampire/#drained
Hayward balked because he knew that among the 1.3 billion people who use Messenger, some would be placed in harmâs way if Facebook deliberately drained their batteriesâââphysically stranded, unable to communicate with loved ones experiencing emergencies, or locked out of their identification, payment method, and all the other functions filled by mobile phones.
As Hayward told Kathianne Boniello at the New York Post, âAny data scientist worth his or her salt will know, âDonât hurt peopleâŠâ I refused to do this test. It turns out if you tell your boss, âNo, thatâs illegal,â it doesnât go over very well.â
Negative testing is standard practice at Facebook, and Hayward was given a document called âHow to run thoughtful negative testsâ regarding which he said, âI have never seen a more horrible document in my career.â
We donât know much else, because Haywardâs employment contract included a non-negotiable binding arbitration waiver, which means that he surrendered his right to seek legal redress from his former employer. Instead, his claim will be heard by an arbitratorâââthat is, a fake corporate judge who is paid by Facebook to decide if Facebook was wrong. Even if he finds in Haywardâs favorâââsomething that arbitrators do far less frequently than real judges doâââthe judgment, and all the information that led up to it, will be confidential, meaning we wonât get to find out more:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/06/12/hot-coffee/#mcgeico
One significant element of this story is that the malicious code was inserted into Facebookâs app. Apps, weâre told, are more secure than real software. Under the âcurated computingâ model, you forfeit your right to decide what programs run on your devices, and the manufacturer keeps you safe. But in practice, apps are just software, only worse:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/06/23/peek-a-boo/#attack-helicopter-parenting
Apps are part what Bruce Schneier calls âfeudal security.â In this model, we defend ourselves against the bandits who roam the internet by moving into a warlordâs fortress. So long as we do what the warlord tells us to do, his hired mercenaries will keep us safe from the bandits:
https://locusmag.com/2021/01/cory-doctorow-neofeudalism-and-the-digital-manor/
But in practice, the mercenaries arenât all that good at their jobs. They let all kinds of badware into the fortress, like the âpig butcheringâ apps that snuck into the two major mobile app stores:
https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/02/pig-butchering-scam-apps-sneak-into-apples-app-store-and-google-play/
Itâs not merely that the app storesâ masters make mistakesâââitâs that when they screw up, we have no recourse. You canât switch to an app store that pays closer attention, or that lets you install low-level software that monitors and overrides the apps you download.
Indeed, Appleâs Developer Agreement bans apps that violate other servicesâ terms of service, and theyâve blocked apps like OG App that block Facebookâs surveillance and other enshittification measures, siding with Facebook against Apple device owners who assert the right to control how they interact with the company:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/10/e2e/#the-censors-pen
When a company insists that you must be rendered helpless as a condition of protecting you, it sets itself up for ghastly failures. Appleâs decision to prevent every one of its Chinese users from overriding its decisions led inevitably and foreseeably to the Chinese government ordering Apple to spy on those users:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/11/foreseeable-consequences/#airdropped
Apple isnât shy about thwarting Facebookâs business plans, but Apple uses that power selectivelyâââthey blocked Facebook from spying on Iphone users (yay!) and Apple covertly spied on its customers in exactly the same way as Facebook, for exactly the same purpose, and lied about it:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/14/luxury-surveillance/#liar-liar
The ultimately, irresolvable problem of Feudal Security is that the warlordâs mercenaries will protect you against anyoneâââexcept the warlord who pays them. When Apple or Google or Facebook decides to attack its users, the companyâs security experts will bend their efforts to preventing those users from defending themselves, turning the fortress into a prison:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/20/benevolent-dictators/#felony-contempt-of-business-model
Feudal security leaves us at the mercy of giant corporationsâââfallible and just as vulnerable to temptation as any of us. Both binding arbitration and feudal security assume that the benevolent dictator will always be benevolent, and never make a mistake. Time and again, these assumptions are proven to be nonsense.

Podcast Elections: ACAB Edition
The introduction to this poll has been moved to the Voter's Guide (under the cut) due to length. Please ensure you are registered to vote in your local elections, should you be eligible.
*There is no lesser evil when the institution itself exists to exploit, oppress, and enact violence. I refuse to vote in this race, but I will vote in other races on the ballot.
Elections are coming up in the USA. I'm used to voting about twice a year, and understand how few measures and candidates are truly exciting to vote for. There's a lot of maintenance (renewing bonds and levies, voting against limitations to abortions, etc). Most candidates have significant flaws and even the ones who seem promising will probably fail to meet their campaign promises. It's boring but important. To me it seems that the dramatic races and measures are usually more threatening (so we vote against it) then promising (so we vote for it). City Council, County Chair, School Board, Water District, Library Board, and so on are all highly important, but candidates' platforms can be opaque, or there can genuinely be no good options. But if we want clean water, good education, freedom to read, an attempt at affordable housing, etc., then we need to care about these positions.
But then there's the elections that never feel good. The elections for who gets to lead the people we allow to murder with little consequence. The people in charge of institutions that I would rather be destroyed. Obviously there's the big one, but frankly due to the electoral college, the state I live in, and partisan races usually coming down to Party over Policy, voting in that election feels incredibly ineffective (but I do it anyways).
Another institution I don't like voting for is the County Sheriff, but at least my vote feels more influential here. As this is a nonpartisan position, this will be a runoff election. That means if no candidate gets greater than 50% of the vote we will hold another race between the top two candidates the following week.

(Pictured above- Chung Fu IIâ Wind with Lake, 1972)
Hollis Taggart in NYC is currently showing  Beyond the Brush: Sheila Isham 1969-1978, which showcases the artist's dreamy spray gun paintings.
From the press release-
Isham led an extraordinary life traveling around the world with her diplomat husband, carefully absorbing and transforming the myriad cultures and traditions she encountered into her own distinct abstract style. Beyond the Brush explores Ishamâs enduring interest in philosophy, nature, and spirituality through the lens of a specific technique and decade in the artistâs illustrious career: her spray gun works from 1968 through 1978. Although Ishamâs work is held in some of the countryâs most esteemed museum collections â including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Hirshhorn Museum; Washington, D.C.; and Minneapolis Institute of Art; to name just a few â it has not been the focus of a major solo exhibition in the United States for over a decade. Spanning both floors of Hollis Taggartâs recently expanded flagship at 521 West 26th Street, Beyond the Brush intends to reintroduce audiences to Ishamâs ethereal works and celebrate her remarkable ability to translate the metaphysical into the visual.
Born in New York City in 1927, Sheila Isham married Hayward Isham, a U.S. Foreign Service officer, after she graduated from Byrn Mawr College. Her husbandâs career caused the couple to frequently relocate internationally, while Ishamâs inquisitiveness led her to fully immerse herself in each culture, diligently studying local beliefs and traditions. In Germany, she became the first American to be accepted at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied from 1950 to 1954 under German Expressionists. In 1955, Isham accompanied her husband to Moscow, where she immersed herself in Russian avant-garde art, and in 1962, to Hong Kong, where she began a rigorous study of classical Chinese calligraphy as well as Eastern philosophies. During her time in Hong Kong, Isham was especially influenced by her studies with the master Feng Kanghou, who oversaw her calligraphic efforts. After a brief return to the United States, the Ishams moved to Haiti in 1974, where the artist became especially preoccupied by the natural world and studying the effects of light.
While in Hong Kong and upon her return to the United States in the early 1970s, Isham became interested in merging Eastern and Western artistic traditions and philosophies. This spiritual inquiry led her into the atmospheric color abstractions that are the focus of Beyond the Brush. Aiming to achieve an impressionistic light effect and to imbue her abstraction with spirituality, Isham embraced the spray gun â an instrument that releases pigment under pressure â which she had been experimenting with since the mid-1960s. This technique, along with her delicate palette, allowed her to create cloud-like forms that capture the sensation of ethereality. As Patricia Lewy notes in her catalogue essay, âIsham followed an internal drive to affirm a higher consciousness through color and form,â leading her to develop of a singular, meditative visual language. Beyond specific cultural influences, it is Ishamâs commitment to spirituality and interest in the sublime that provides the strongest thread between the works in Beyond the Brush.
âWe are thrilled to devote both floors of the gallery to this incredibly rich decade of Sheila Ishamâs career,â said Hollis Taggart. âThough Isham â now in the ninety-fifth year of her life â contributed greatly to the art of the twentieth century, her fascinating life and oeuvre has not been studied or exhibited extensively, especially in the past decade. With Beyond the Brush, we hope to not only begin to give Ishamâs work the scholarship it deserves â starting with Patricia Lewyâs scholarly catalogue essay â but also to share the sheer beauty of her canvases with wider audiences.â
This exhibition closes 3/18/23.

A Family History
Introduction
Hello All!
Todays story, just like last week, was sent into me. The person who emailed me these images (and links to the libraries where she found them) had been doing research on her family history. This included finding obituaries of her ancestors. In those obituaries a story about family and love made itself clear to her.
Below are the documents she emailed me. I've also included the comments she left for me alongside them. They're listed as archival notes.
I have bolded any text which she highlighted in the images.
Content Warnings:
Environmental Homophobia
Assumed Heterosexuality
Mentions of death (many)
This is also posted on my website
Family Documents
Archival Note: Obituaries are abridged of names which are not needed to give a full picture of the story. Â
OBITUARY OF OSBORNE, GEORGE:
George Osborne was listed by official reports as killed in the battle at the Battle of Ballâs Bluff on October 19th, 1861, following injuries to the chest. He will join in heaven those who have passed before him He is survived by his wife, Jane Osborne, and his mother.
OBITUARY OF SEYMOUR, BENJAMIN:
On October 24th, 1861, Benjamin Seymour lost his life to disease. He was injured in valiant fighting during the Battle of Ballâs Bluff three days before he died. His earthly body will be moved to its final place of rest on October 28th. He will be laid to rest beside his childhood friend George Osborne who preceded him in death by three days. He is survived by his wife, Susan Seymour, and their two children, William and Lucretia. He will be missed by his family and community.
OBITUARY OF SEYMOUR, WILLIAM:
William Seymour was killed in a tragic accident on September 28th, 1879. From a young age, his life was defined by his father's service and dedication to the United States of America. Benjamin Seymour preceded his son in death after an injury fighting for the Union in the Civil War.
William's mother ensured he knew the courage of his father and supported William's decision to join the Army at age 18. William Seymour returned from the Army 2 years later. He continued his public service by taking a seat in the City Council. William Seymour is preceded in death by his father and paternal grandparents. He is mourned by his community and family, including his mother, Susan, his sister Lucretia, and his godmother Jane Osborne.
A ceremony celebrating William's life and mourning his loss will be held on October 2nd at One PM. He will be buried in Haywardâs Military Cemetery as his father was before him.
Archival Note: Neither woman remarried. Â The 1890 census lists them as living in the same home. Lucretia (William and Susanâs daughter) does marry a man named Edward Clyburn and had 3 children with him.
Below are 2 other articles where we can get a little more insight into these women after their husbands died.
The factory girls are managed by Jane Osborne, the Widow of the late George Osborne, who gave his life in the Civil War. Mrs. Osborne has managed the third floor, where shirts have been assembled since the war. Thirty years ago, the factory had the honor of making clothing for soldiers in the war. Now they make ready-made shirts for men. The factory produces hundreds of articles a day, many under the supervision of Mrs. Osborne. Her dedication to the company and the community would have made her husband proud.
Among the women present were Susan Seymour and Jane Osborne. Both women are widows of the war. Though Mrs. Osborne has been a working woman for many years, Susan Seymour has used her late husbandâs pension to support her family. At the celebration, she said, âThis memorial will be wonderful for those of us who lost someone in the war. My love [Jane Osborne] and I will surely use this as a place to pay respects to the men we lost.â
OBITUARY OF SEYMOUR, SUSAN:
On August 3rd, 1913, Susan Seymour was reunited with her husband in heaven after suffering a stroke. Susan Seymour had been a pillar of the social scene of Hayward up until her passing. She was a member in good standing with several local social groups, including the Women's Christian Temperance Union.Â
Mrs. Seymour was not a stranger to lifeâs challenges. She lost her parents when she was young, and her husband Benjamin gave his life in the civil war. Her military pension hardly made up for the sacrifice of her husband, but Susan was able to sustain her two children and herself. She remained in her husbandâs home until the tragic loss of her son, William, in 1879. She then moved to the north end of town and petitioned the court to allow herself and fellow military widow Jane Osborne to own a simple one bedroom house.Â
Mrs. Seymour continued to be an active member of several social groups as well as a doting grandmother. Susan Seymour was known by all to be kind, caring, and dependable. She was an honest woman who held respect in the community. In the absence of a husband to serve, she served the children near her. In her spare time, she was known to help make clothing for those in our community who could not afford it.Â
Susan Seymour is survived in life by her friend Jane Osborne, her daughter Lucretia Clyburn, her Son-in-law Edward Clyburn, and three grandchildren. She will join in heaven those who have passed before her, including her parents, her husband Benjamin Seymour, and her son William Seymour. Susan Seymourâs funeral service will be held on August 5th at Haywardâs Baptist Church. She will be laid to rest in the churchâs cemetery. Any gifts meant for the family should be sent to her friend Jane Osborne who is assisting in the settlement of her estate.
OBITUARY OF OSBORNE, JANE:
Jane Osborne passed away from a sudden heart attack on August 7th, 1913. She died in her home in the company of her family friend, Lucretia Clyburn nĂ©e Seymour. Born and raised in Hayward, Jane married George Osborne in 1859. She was widowed during the Civil War and was never remarried.Â
Jane Osborne will be mourned and remembered by the family of Lucretia Clyburn, who was like a daughter to her. She will also be missed by those who she worked with for over 50 years at the William Murray Clothing Factory. She is preceded in death by her husband, George Osborne, and her friend Susan Seymour.Â
In compliance with their requests, Jane Osborne will be laid to rest beside her lifelong friend Susan Seymour in Haywardâs Baptist Cemetery. The service will be held on August 10th.
OBITUARY OF CLYBURN, LUCRETIA:
On Wednesday, May 13th, 1951, Hayward lost a true pillar to the community. Lucretia Clyburn passed away in her home, surrounded by her family. In the wake of her failing health over the past few months, Mrs. Clyburn asked not to be monitored. She lived her final days uninhibited by assessments of her physical well-being. Those near her say she remained herself until hours before her death. An official cause of death will not be released to the public. Lucretiaâs children want her mother to be remembered for her life and not for her death.Â
A celebration of this life will be held at Haywards Baptist Church on Saturday, May 16th.Â
Mrs. Clyburn was preceded in death by her parents, Susan and Benjamin Seymour, her brother William Seymour, her husband, Edward Clyburn, and her lifelong friend Emily Boone. She is survived by her 3 children, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. At her request, she will be buried beside her mother in Haywardâs Baptist Cemetery.
Archival Note: The letter below is what convinced me to send in this email. It confirms things you could only sort of see when reading through the other newspapers. I knew there was something between the women in this story, my great aunt had mentioned them to me before. This is more proof than I expected to find.
The article below was published May 20th 1951 in The Hayward Times.
OPINION: LETTER FROM LUCRETIA CLYBURN
A letter was discovered while finalizing the estate of Lucretia Clyburn nĂ©e Seymour. In an attempt to respect her written wishes, it is being published. The publication of this document is happening with the permission of her children and the editor-and-chief of Hayward Times, a close friend to Mr. and Mrs. Clyburn.Â
The letter is quoted in itâs exact language below
To my dear friends and family,Â
You will not be able to read this letter until Iâm gone. If you are reading this while I am still alive, please knock it off. It is to be published when I no longer have to answer for its contents. As many of my friends know, I often claimed to have a secret I would take with me to my grave. I am now in my grave. In an attempt to clear up my own history, as well as to respect the truth of my family's history, I want to share this secret now.Â
My mother was a homosexual. She may not have known the word, but she was. Anyone who knew my family when she was alive knew she was widowed when I was a babe. Her friend Jane was widowed the same week. Jane Osborne was a second mother to me. More than that, she was as good as a wife to my mother. If the world were right, my mother, Susan Seymour, wouldâve had Jane Osborneâs name on her marriage certificate. If the rumors I heard as a child are to be believed, their husbands were more interested in each other anyway.Â
Lots of folks talk about how their parents' marriage acted as an example for their own lives. I donât remember my motherâs marriage to my father, but she taught me how to love when she was with Jane. Their relationship gave me examples of compromise, patience, trust, and care that served as the foundation of my marriage to Clyde. Jane helped my mother raise her children, and I truly believe she felt the loss of my brother William as if he was her own son. In some ways, he was. My granddaughter Mavis is adopted. I know this fact doesnât stop my son from loving her. I knew Jane loved me just the same. I knew because she told me so.Â
It was an open secret in my household that my mother loved Jane. My late husband Clyde was a family friend and knew this when he proposed to me. He also knew that I had no interest in him. Lots of women laugh when they hear it took Clyde three tries to get me to say yes to his proposal. The true reason I said no is not because I was unsure of Clyde. I was unsure of myself.Â
I am also a homosexual.Â
Though this may shock some of you, I do not think it will shock any who saw me with my late love, Emily Boone. I found it hard to hide how I felt for her whenever I was able to be in her presence. I grew to love Clyde as much as I could love any man. He knew this and loved me anyway. Do not let it be said our house lacked love. Do not let it be said that Clyde was also a homosexual. He loved me in a way I could not love him back. He appreciated my love for Emily, and he never used my difference as an excuse to treat me poorly. Clyde was a good husband, and this letter should not be used to stain his legacy.Â
I loved Emily in a different way. I loved Emily in the way that burns through every part of the body and pulls one soul toward the other. Though I was never wed to Emily Boone, we were as close as two women could be. I have said it many times in the twenty years since she lost her life to cancer, Emily Boone was sent to this world to improve my life and the life of everyone else around her. She knew before she died that I would one day write this letter. Though she never said it, I think she was glad that she would not be around to see the outcome of the letter. I suspect this letter will come as a shock to her family. I apologize to them for the shock, but I will never apologize for loving Emily with all of my heart. She was the best woman in the world, and I will always be grateful that she loved me back.Â
Thereâs a lot of talk right now about homosexuals. This letter isnât meant to be political, itâs just true. My other mother, Jane Osborne, was a good worker and a true American. She was also homosexual. My love Emily Boone served in World War I and received awards for her service. She was also a homosexual.
As I write this letter, I am only writing about people who have gone before me. This letter should not leave a stain upon any of my living relatives.Â
I will leave you with this, my final words for the living world:Â
Loving in silence is hard. Living without love is impossible. Be kind to your neighbors.Â
Lucretia Clyburn
The publication of this letter in the opinion column of The Hayward Times does not serve as an endorsement of the views expressed within it. In light of the letter, we would like to add the following correction to the obituary of Lucretia Clyburn, nĂ©e SeymourÂ
Mrs. Clyburn was preceded in death by her parents, Susan and Benjamin Seymour and Jane Osborne, her brother William Seymour, her husband, Edward Clyburn, and her life partner Emily Boone. She is survived by her 3 children, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. At her request, she will be buried beside her two mothers in Haywardâs Baptist Cemetery.Â
Paul Hayward
Editor in Chief
Archival Note: Lucretia Clyburn is my great-great grandmother. The letter which Paul Hayward (a family friend) posted in his paper was used as evidence of three of Lucretia's grandchildren (My grandma, her brother, and one of their cousins). They were interrogated during the lavender scare. So was Paul Hayward. All four of them lost their jobs.
My grandma is the one who told me to start looking into these women. She knew her grandmother was gay, and once I showed her this paper she remembered reading it when it was published. My grandma's bisexual, she married my grandfather Howard in 1962. When I came out to her as a lesbian 10 years ago she told me 'you always did remind me of grandma Lucretia.'
I hope you and/or your readers find something worthwhile in their story.
Below I've included a diagram of the people involved in this story in case they get lost with all of the names.
Outroduction
Thank you all for reading! I'm so honored to be able to help share this story. It stretches further into the future than most of the stories I find, so we are able to see these people described in words we still use today.
I have another story ready for two weeks from now.
Stay queer and take care of yourselves,
Chrys

I have had perfect dogs who are an example of this through my life... ill do this in chronological order Emma, Bernese Mountain Dog, she was from Europe because, for some reason, in the late 90s, my parents couldn't find someone in the US to sell them a dog because we lived in China... as ex-pats. Emma was from beautiful show lines and lived a solid 8 years (a bit over the Berner average). They were bred to work with dairy farmers as an all-around farm dog to do things like: keep cattle away from the farmer when not being milked, move them around, keep the children safe from the cattle, and keep the property safe. They also had the fun job of pulling carts. They are described as placid and calm, aloof toward strangers but loving to their families. This dog was the epitome of her breed, My parents didn't have a farm, but they started with two kids and ended up with four kids in her lifetime. So Emma decided she was going to be a nanny dog. She was amazing. She had endless patience with us kids and loved babies. She would remove herself from a situation if we were being annoyed, and if we played too rough, she would grab our hand or arm with her mouth and hold us till we calmed down. She would watch the babies on their play mats or in their carriers. if they were with my mom elsewhere, she would guard the carrier. If that was in the car, she would guard my mom's shoes or baby bag or something of ours. She would never bite people or other dogs. She would give other dogs warning growls and maybe snap at them and bark if they got too close but never bite. IF people got closer to something she was guarding that she didn't want them she would put herself between the person and the thing (or child) and try to distract them by begging for pets. I have asthma and, until last year, couldn't be around unfamiliar dogs, particularly Golden Retrievers. She HATED goldens. She refused to let them come up to me and would get her most angry towards them. (Emma and my dad)
Trixy, Caucasian Shepherd (Georgian Nagazi), We had her while living in Georgia. Mainly bread for fighting Caucasus mountain BEARS AND WOLVS, protecting the herders and the herder's family and property. There is a legend of one RIPING A WOLF TO PIECES to protect a child. They are known to hate strangers and be fiercely protective and brave. Trixy was not a perfect example of her breed in the stranger aggressive part, mostly because she and her brother (he passed at one year due to a stomach twist) were raised super socially by constantly coming to my parent's school they worked at and were loved on by the whole community. The head guard there loved them so much he adopted Trixy when we moved. They loved everyone and had been trained out of their aggressiveness towards strangers because of all that work we put in in their early days. These guys were friendly. Now how did Trixy fit the mold? Strange dogs.... she wouldn't leave our side if there was another dog around and would bark and growl if they tried to approach. She would also stick close to us kids if we were greeting strangers, and she would always check back on us during hikes to make sure we weren't in danger before running back off. Her number 1 priority was us, and she always wanted to ensure we were ok. She would play with my baby brother, who was a third of her weight, so gently you wouldn't believe she could put her paws easily on my 6'4" (193cm) father. They would alert strangers near the property but wouldn't hurt anyone unless they would try to hurt us (I never had the chance to but knowing her, she would have been just like the legend.) She had the job of keeping the family safe and she did it. (Trixy left, Hayward right)
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, MY CURRENT DOG Universal Healthcare (Uni), Toy Poodle, she's my current dog and my service dog. She's a year and a half, and we've had her a year. Poodles were bred as hunting dogs, the miniature variety was bred to hunt mushrooms and work in circuses, and toys were bred from those to be the perfect companion. They are highly intelligent and sociable and can be protective of their families. Uni was the dog I dreamed of as a kid. Small like a stuffed animal, cute, sweet, friendly, and smart to teach tricks. We got uni at about 5 months because she was too small to breed (she was 5 lb, 2.27 KG last weigh in) and was held back by her breeder to see if she would hit the 10lb (4.54 kg) mark. Being half the size needed she wanted to find her a good home. Her grandmother had been a therapy dog after she retired from breeding so when she heard from a friend that she knew of someone looking for a service dog prospect she was delighted! Uni is a perfect example of the breed and would have rocked the show ring. She's so smart it shocks me at times and had learned how to alert too my panic attacks on her own. She learned left and right on her own from pointing. She knows a handful of fun tricks (like spin) and a load of great ones for my episodes. She does a great job of her service dog duties and has had a rough time because of her size. Larger dogs lunge at her, and she thinks I need to be protected, so she will get between us ( based off of previous large dogs, you know I know how to handle them. I could handle the Nagazi on my own at 13, so I had to yeet her up by her harness and hold her. I've only had to knee one dog in the chest; it's usually enough to give a harsh no or 'F*CK OFF'). She gets grabbed all the time, people screech at her booties (in delight, but it's annoying), and she's had people trip about her. We even had to learn a set of behaviors to avoid distraction, people will greet her without permission, so we have a "say hi" command. She has to sit, then when I say "say hi," she knows she can say hello to these people; I get a chance to explain what she is and how service dogs work, and how she can say hi because we have a command, but don't go to pet a working service dog, and then when I say "all done!" she knows to stop. We usually do a sit and a hand touch and get back to work with no problem. Her only problem is her worry about large dogs (because of previously having them try to eat her) but were working through it, and she has excellent interactions with friends (one a greyhound named Grendle who is mainly just overwhelmed by how much 12-inch [30.48cm] Uni loves him]. She sleeps in bed with us, sometimes wedged between me and my fiance, sometimes on our pillow, sometimes at my feet. She always jumps up the moment I wake up to check in (I have bad nightmares and sleep paralysis) and comes over for a snuggle and to make sure I'm actually awake. She follows me everywhere; she can tell I'm about to have an episode before I do and will let me stim on her to ground. She smells my breath and listens to my heart to tell what's going on, and I have no idea what she knows from it, but she's made me sit down before dizzy spells and fought off oncoming flashbacks before I knew it was happening. She saved my life and ill love her forever for that. (Uni and Bjalfi, our six-month-old kitten, asleep on our laundry. They are best friends)
I think it's so funny how we bred JOBS into dogs. I have two shih tzus and they were bred to be lap dogs. All they care about is looking cute and cuddling with people. Meanwhile my grandma has a border collie and that dog needs to feel so useful all the time, he acts like he will pass away if he doesn't have a job to do constantly

King Charles joins veterans at D-Day 80th anniversary commemorations
Rishi Sunakâs election campaigning and King Charlesâs convalescence from cancer will be put on hold for 48 hours, as the two men join veterans to mark the 80th anniversary of D-day on the south coast of England and in Normandy.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who has pledged to ensure D-Day lessons are taught if he becomes Prime Minister, also attends the event.
The King greeted the crowd gathered in Portsmouth with a wave of his hand as he and the Queen took to the stage. He told the audience:
âThe stories of courage, resilience and solidarity which you have heard today and throughout our lives cannot fail to move us, to inspire us and to remind us of what we owe to that great wartime generation, now tragically dwindling to so few. It is our privilege to hear that testimony, but our role is not purely passive. It is our duty to ensure that we and future generations do not forget their service and their sacrifice in replacing tyranny with freedom.â
Prince William said he was âhonouredâ when he spoke on stage at the Remembrance Day event.
Wednesdayâs UK commemorations, which included readings, music and reenactments from the period, also featured recollections from D-Day veterans, mainly in pre-recorded videos.
However, Roy Hayward â who was aged 19 at the time â took to the stage to speak of his emotions eight decades on. The veteran, who later in WWII lost both his legs below the knees to amputation, said:
âI always considered myself one of the lucky ones that survived, because so many of us didnât. I represent the men and women who put their lives on hold to go and fight for democracy and this country.â
Rishi Sunak also turned to the words of a soldier to make his contribution. He read out Field Marshal Montgomeryâs address to the troops before the D-Day landings.
First Minister John Swinney represents Scotland at the ceremony. Mr. Swinney paid tribute to the âbrave men and womenâ who took part in the military operation during the World War II before attending the commemoration.
The event was hosted by Dame Helen Mirren, with military musicians and special guests leading the opening ceremony.
In Normandy, the Princess Royal will join British and Canadian military veterans for the commemoration. Princess Anne is taking part in a series of events to honour the sacrifices of Allied troops on the anniversary on the eve of the decisive invasion of Europe.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden landed in France to take part in commemorative events to mark D-Day. Mr. Biden will spend five days in the country. He is due to give a high-profile speech and hold an official state visit with President Emmanuel Macron.
Meanwhile, Ukraineâs president Volodymyr Zelensky is set to deliver a speech to the National Assembly on June 7, the last day of the European election campaign. This manoeuvre makes the opposition shudder.
Olivier Marleix, chairman of the Republicans (LR) group, denounced the visit as âregrettable 48 hours before the European electionsâ in the National Assembly on June 4. Visiting Paris as part of D-Day commemorations to which Russia was not invited, Zelensky will appear before the Assembly for the first time in two years.
Troops from Britain, the US, Canada and France attacked German forces on the beaches of Normandy in northern France on June 6 1944. The Normandy landings were the largest naval invasion in history, and the World War II battle laid the groundwork for the Allied victory in Europe.

Complete Remodeling Guide: Floor To Ceiling Transformation Through Home Remodeling Orinda
A general contractor California provides many unique services that are crucial for a smooth remodeling process including hiring subcontractors, securing permits, estimating costs, offering design support, sourcing materials, overseeing construction, and timely completion with cleanup. Top-to-bottom remodeling involves everything from false ceilings to floor tiling, which is why the use of proper equipment and high-quality materials by responsible contractors is a must!
5 Steps For A Remodel Of Your Dreams
Hayward Home Remodeling understands the importance of a structured, step-by-step process to complete remodeling. Here is what we recommend you do!
Set A Budget
Setting a budget is all about knowing where to allocate how much money. It not only helps us stay on top of our finances but also gives us a direction for our plans.
When we set a budget it is also important to highlight a â budget bufferâ. This refers to the amount of money we cut off from the actual budget and keep for extra expenses!
Every house remodeling contractor California is already used to working on different budgets and delivering appropriate, value-for-money results! So it is a must that we are transparent about our monetary constraints.
Conduct A Property Audit
Since you are undertaking large-scale changes to be made at almost every part of your house, it is a good idea to conduct a complete home audit to identify the top areas of concern.
After you have inspected and detected problem areas, you can always add some cosmetic interior choices to the mix and create your remodeling design plan. Usually, the main places that need attention are the bathrooms, kitchen, backyard, and roof.
Select a Contractor
Depending on your location and budget, you will easily be able to shortlist several companies offering home remodeling Orinda solutions. Now start ranking them according to expertise and review!
When selecting a home remodeling contractor, consider their experience, reputation, and credentials.
Next, we must also ensure they are licensed, and insured, and provide detailed contracts that our lawyers approve of. It is always a good idea to ask for consultancy from multiple companies so that you can negotiate prices and select the best in the market!
Once you have found your dream contractor, start explaining your design plan to them and understand their opinions about the feasibility of your choices.
Start with The Remodeling
The actual process of transforming your home will naturally be undertaken by a professional construction company California. As per your directions, this team will start with demolishing certain areas of your interior and exterior.
Following this, insulation will be installed and walls will be painted. You can select experimental wall textures and wallpapers at this stage.
The team will then move on to installing carpentry finishes including doors, windows, modular furniture, and lighting. You can carefully choose from wooden, iron, and silicon designs as well as pick out light fixtures of your choice.
Finally, countertops and tiles will be set up. Make sure to leave you the changes every step of the way so that you can suggest upgrades that can be made on the spot!
Final Thoughts
A complete floor-to-ceiling remodeling is the result of combined efforts put forth by construction company California, carpenters, local building inspectors, interior designers, cleaners and movers, insurance companies, etc. The successful conclusion of a remodeling project depends on attention to detailed and thorough communication between all involved parties. Which company would you select and why?
