2023 is the Year of the Rabbit
2023 is the Year of the Rabbit
That means anyone out there with even a slight interest in comic books or Japan has to read at least one issue of USAGI YOJIMBO by Stan Sakai this year. I’m sorry but no exceptions allowed! I know I’ve written about this long-running comic series before, but I wish it got more recognition and press. Writer and artist Stan Sakai has been chronicling the adventures of his “Rabbit Bodyguard” since…

jyushi’s council of monsters!!!!
these monsters are actually all tengu!!! these tengu in particular are said to have fought for minamoto no yoshitsune, a very famous samurai known for his victories that unified japan at one point. the tengu here granted minamoto no yoshitsune the skills and knowledge to defeat benkei, an equally famous warrior monk, who swore his allegiance to minamoto no yoshitsune thereafter his loss. here’s the art of the battle!!!
Tumblr media
from left to right in jyushi’s council of tengu, we have saburo of iizuka mountain, sagamibo of shiramine, sojobo of mount kurama, and hokibo of mount daisen.
these tengu reside in different regions of japan, likely to symbolise what this samurai has helped accomplish, and it’s interesting we have jyushi depicted here as said leader who had brought japan together 👀

Yonago Waterbird Sanctuary: A bird watching paradise
Yonago, the largest city in western Tottori Prefecture, is a nature lover’s paradise with convenient access to Mount Daisen, the Sea of Japan and Nakaumi—the fifth-largest lake in the country. Nakaumi’s brackish waters support a rich ecosystem that includes hundreds of species of birds. Encompassing about 28 hectares of lakeside wetlands, the Yonago Waterbird Sanctuary is the […]

Daisen, which ranks No. 3 among Japan’s famous peaks after Mt. Fuji and Yarigatake, sits alongside the Tottori Sand Dunes and is one of the representative natural heritage sites for Tottori Prefecture.

An attractive mountain which has a variety of expressions depending on where you view it, seeing it from the west is exceptional. Also known as Houki-Fuji, it has the gentle slopes and grand scenery reminiscent of Mt. Fuji.

The view of Daisen from the northern end of Daisen Town is called Kitakabe (Northern Wall), and it has the characteristic of a sheer rock face that measures 400m high and 2km in length. It differs from the more feminine appearance of the west side and it has a masculine rough-hewn mountain valley. The best view is at Daisen Ski Resort. The large looming cliff there is an overwhelming sight. In addition, the view of the mountain from Koufu Town to the south is known as Minamikabe (Southern Wall). As with Kitakabe, Minamikabe has precipitous folds and the harmony among the bare rock face, the fresh leaves and then the autumn colors is lovely no matter how you say it. (via Life In Japan: FBI | John Rachel) Friends not familiar with Japan always express surprise when I tell them that camping is one of our favorite ways to tour the country. I have to remind them that Japan is not just cement and tall buildings with giant flat-panel displays advertising cafés, pachinko, and novelty shops. 70% of Japan is covered with forests. And we have an array of topological features which offer both stunning natural beauty and incredible variety: rivers, oceans, seas, mountains, valleys, hills, volcanoes, ponds, lakes, sand dunes, tropical rain forests (Okinawa), hundreds of kilometers of beaches, by golly even one semi-parched desert, finally, last but certainly not least, hundreds of islands. After all, Japan is an island!

Climbing the 100 Most Famous Mountains in Japan
If you are thinking about climbing the most famous mountains in Japan, you may have a hard time choosing which ones to choose. There are more than one hundred, but we have chosen 100 that we believe deserve our attention. This list is based on the most popular mountains in Japan, so you can be sure that it is not an exhaustive list. To begin, we'll list a few of the easiest climbs. After you have chosen your route, consider the level of difficulty you're comfortable with. You can find more information about choosing a 百名山
The Fukada Club has compiled a list of the most famous mountains in Japan, and the Fukada Club has included Mt. Fuji on the list. The Fukada Club also listed another hundred famous mountains, including Mt. Arasawa. If you are in the mood for more adventure, consider purchasing a certificate set from one of these famous mountains. You can even make your own list!
One of the most popular stamp record certificates, Makuake's "climbing" series, has 201 mountains on it. If you're on a budget, you can get the compact version, which includes 200 of Japan's most famous mountains. This certificate starts at 3800 yen and is sold in advance. You can leave your mark on as many as 301 famous mountains by climbing these amazing mountains.
The Chugoku Mountains are another great choice. Located in the Chugoku region of the island of Honshu, the Chugoku Mountains are home to over 1,760 named mountains. The highest peak is Mount Daisen, which is part of the Chugoku Mountain Range. The list also includes several peaks from the Akaishi Mountains, including Mount Takayama. There are more than two dozen mountain ranges in Japan, each with their own unique features and geologic history.
The Okuchichibu Mountains are also a popular destination for outdoor recreation. Although once heavily forested, these mountains now have many national parks. Mount Fuji and Mount Asahi are just two of the national parks located here. The Ou Mountains are another classic mountain range in Japan, and contain seventy-seven named mountains. Mount Hayachine is the highest. In addition to the Okuchichibu and Shikoku islands, there are dozens more popular hiking destinations in the country.
Another of the most beautiful mountains in Japan is Mount Fuji. Located in the Hokkaido province, this mountain range is the coldest region of the country, which makes it an excellent destination for outdoor recreation. There are also dozens of lakes, islands, waterfalls, and hiking trails throughout the region. Nikko National Park is another great choice. Situated just south of Fukushima, it was designated as an imperial park in 1911, and then as a national park in 1934.
You can climb Mt. Arakawa, which takes about five hours to climb and descend. The Dentsuku Pass, on the other hand, takes about three hours and can be reached in a day's hike. The route is a bit longer than Mt. Arakawa, but is definitely worth the effort. And don't forget to try out the hot spring at the top of the mountain. You'll be glad you did!
