Dragon age: Origins - 9:30 Dragon
Dragon Age: Awakening - 9:31 Dragon
Dragon Age II - 9:37 Dragon (act 3)
Dragon Age: Inquisition - 9:41 Dragon
Dragon Age: The Veilguard - 9:52 Dragon
We know literally nothing about the age of some characters (like Oghren). I used canon information and/or logic. If empty - the character has not yet been born or has already died.
About Cole - since he died as a human, I didn’t add a year to him.
About Solas - for the year of "birth" I used the approximate date of the founding of Arlathan

ill say this bioware did finally manage to make a dragon age game where there's no romance that has more story significance than the others.
#like TO ME morrigan - anders - solas romances all add an extra layer to the basic plot of the game. maybe add alistair since he can be king#like because they all do something big in the plot. the main characfer romancing them adds more to the plot.#or to the impact of what they did. anders lying to his lover and taking action to blow up the chantry and being forgiven by them#hits way harder than it just being his friend#anyway none of the veilguard companions are like that. you could maybe argue bellara and neve for the elgie kidnapping#but thats. like. barely.#carly.txt

So far, every Bioware game has had a “writer’s pet”, as it were.
First, it was Morrigan in Origins.
Then Anders. (Though, that may be up for debate because it also seemed like the writers had a hate-boner for him.)
Then Solas.
And I have yet to play the trilogy, but I’ve heard that Liara was treated like the favorite, as well.
And now, Veilguard’s clear favorite is Neve.
By this point, Bioware is really predictable.
Even Andromeda had a favorite:

my muses and their letter writing styles:
gwen cousland: very proper, cursive handwriting. she’s able to sound affectionate despite being proper though by some miracle
noora hawke: typically writes short letters, cursive handwriting. she’d rather talk in person so letters are typically reserved for arranging meetings unless the receiver is far away. then, she’ll let them get lengthy.
robin hawke: very casual, messy handwriting. as in you have to send him back a tracing of at least three words to ask him what they are but he doesn’t mind.
simon trevelyan: surprisingly proper, neat print. writes pretty much exactly how he talks.
aoi ingellvar: proper, scholarly. cursive handwriting. their writing comes off as academic, even to those they care for.
alistair theirin: shorthand letters, messy handwriting. he learned how to write later in life, so his penmanship isn't the best. letters are a last resort for him.
morrigan: very proper letters, very fancy handwriting. writes letters where you forget the point of them.
anders: long, yappy letters, messy print. incapable of shutting up to the point where the letters become too long and he knows it.
fenris: he can't read or write. ):
varric tethras: long, flowery letters. messy, but legible cursive. a storyteller until the end even in his personal correspondences.
cullen rutherford: long letters, cursive. sometimes they seem more like missives than letters but he's trying his best.
dorian pavus: long letters, pretty cursive. his upper class tevinter education was good for something liUSDHGLAIUSDG
solas: long letters, the kind of cursive that feels really old fashioned ( because it is ).
bellara lutare: long letters, messy script. think like a doctor's handwriting with lots of tangents.
davrin: shorter letters, neat print. short letters are just a result of the occupation. he doesn't have time to write letters.
lucanis dellamorte: longer letters, pretty cursive. it's the antiva in him to write pretty and write a lot.
neve gallus: shorter letters, neat print. she's to the point and needs to be able to find things easily.
taash: shorter letters, messy print. taash would prefer to speak to someone than write to them and they're very clear about that if they ever have to write.
#phew. this is gonna be a lot of tags#Headcanon: Gwendolyne Cousland.#Headcanon: Noora Hawke.#Headcanon: Robin Hawke.#Headcanon: Simon Trevelyan.#Headcanon: Aoi Ingellvar.#Headcanon: Alistair Theirin.#Headcanon: Morrigan.#Headcanon: Anders.#Headcanon: Fenris.#Headcanon: Varric Tethras.#Headcanon: Cullen Rutherford.#Headcanon: Dorian Pavus.#Headcanon: Solas.#Headcanon: Bellara Lutare.#Headcanon: Davrin.#Headcanon: Lucanis Dellamorte.#Headcanon: Neve Gallus.#Headcanon: Taash.

For your amusement, I asked my kid sister to name the Dragon Age companions based on their pictures:
My sister was very excited to share what she thought everyone should be named. She has no clue what their actual names are or anything other than the pictures I showed her. Also we didn't do Awakening because honestly I kind of spaced.
Dragon Age Origins: Alistair: Beastro Zevran: Lathander Morrigan: Lelala Leliana: Mythina Oghren: Gimli Wynne: Bella Sten: Karcar Shale: Roxie
Dragon Age 2:
Aveline: Belladonna Isabela: Beth Anders: George Fenris: Baxon Merril: Sora Varric: Ogre (She says it's because he looks kind of like the human version of Shrek). Sebastian: Zorathin Bethany: Amy Carver: BRICK (I'm dead!)
Dragon Age Inquisition: (I also had her name Cullen and Josephine here) Cassandra: Scar Cole: Swizzle (I have no clue) Iron Bull: Corey Sera: Elfie (Yes, I thought it was ironic) Vivienne: Zacaiah Blackwall: Belto Dorian: Mustachio Solas: BALDY THE WHINEY ELF (I'm dead again!) Josephine: Zathora Cullen: Colstrin Dragon Age the Veilguard: Lucanis: Daggar Davrin: Darvin (She was accidentally SO close!) Bellara: Beeky Taash: Cassy Neve: Diamond Harding: Darla Emmerich: Caper

I did not expect to like Taash nearly as much as I did, though I'm aware "large and gruff" is my favourite character type. I really like the way that matter-of-factness applies to all the aspects of them: I loved them simply telling Bellara when she was down, "I want you to be happy", rather than couching it in platitudes. Also, I tend to have way more patience for prickliness in characters than a lot of fans I know, so my gauge is broken. They admit a lot of the closedoffness is awkwardness, fear and Qunari cultural norms. (Unlike in other series entries, Veilguard's characters mostly tell you their whole deal, which is refreshingly mature but means the whole cast are being disgustingly honest with each other. Taash is the nearest we get to the "Care about things, me, nooo" of Zev, Morrigan, Isabela, sometimes-Dorian or DAA Anders, but that's still less intentional obfuscation than not knowing them as well. Even so, I approve of the fact they're an onion and it takes a bit to peel them.)
Yes, they're abrasive when you first meet them. They've been shipped off to join the Veilguard against their will, they're most likely fresh from a debate with their overbearing, arguably emotionally abusive mother, and you come and interrupt them in the middle of a tricky mission while they try not to get you both killed.
They're shit to Emmrich at first, but they do work on it and try to find common ground with him, and admit their grumpiness came from fear. Also, he did keep asking about their mum with admiration - no wonder that was a sore spot. (An older scholar lecturing them, chastising them for their impulsivity and lack of respect for tradition... I adore Emmrich and think he's unequivocally the kindest guy in the cast, but after Taash's difficult experiences with their mother, it's no wonder they found that horribly familiar.) They get pissed-off with Neve because she's "better at" femininity, but they're ashamed, they admit why and take the olive branch she offers. They worry about getting Harding a good gift. They feed birds and worry about a stranded poet. They may ask about Crow myths, but they clearly respect and admire Lucanis' skills and tell him so. They make their mum dinner and try to level, to share, with her even though they're pissed-off and terrified.
Later in their dialogue, it becomes especially obvious that they're working really hard on being kind - they intend to be, they just misstep as they learn. Shathaan was... distant. The Lords looked after them but couched a lot of it in brusqueness, stabbing and humour. They have no idea what to do with kindness and being told they're just fine as they are (one of my favourite character tropes: see also Alistair, Sera, Isabela, Dorian). They think they're doomed to ruin everything they touch and while they loved the Lords, you get the sense they've never had this many close friends (other than maybe Isabela's mentorship and the poet they bonded with) and they're really glad of it. As said: I like that they love with as much bluntness.
Much like with Krem, I think some of the dialogue in Taash's story was clumsy, but other bits felt very true to friends I've had and my own relationship with femininity, and as said, I was surprised to realise I had grown very fond of them by halfway through. (Well-intentioned awkward social issue inclusion is nothing new for BioWare, and it's never just about terminology - people seem to write off Taash's whole personality without giving them a chance. I don't think they're any harder to like than Morrigan, Sera, Vivienne, Solas, or Davrin, all of whom have fans.) Their excitement about dragons and their awe about Crows are genuine and sweet. Also they make me cackle more than any other companion save maybe Lucanis. That'll buy you a lot of points with me.

List of my Veilguard Complaints... just all together... getting it out of my system and then making it reddit's problem:
This game felt so emotionally flat. I think... the reviewers calling out the game for "therapy speak" weren't entirely wrong. It's more exposition speak and the fact that EVERY SINGLE feeling EVERY SINGLE trauma EVERY SINGLE event needs to be processed, out loud. It's not "too woke," it's just emotionally... spacious. Because you're forced to explore EVERYONE'S interiority... it feels like they have none left, does that make sense? No one has hidden depths because they announce and process every thing they go through, often immediately after it happens. It's hard to imagine any additional depth
It's also hard because... no one... has that much depth. Everyone has weaknesses and bad things that happened to them but it feels like there was a lack of... real character arcs? People had character sub plots. "Accept this thing about myself" was the main one. Which... doesn't help the therapy speak accusation.
No one is a bad person. The crows? The human trafficking, child soldiering, murderous gang? They're the good guys and we should be happy they rule Treviso! Lucanis is just a good guy doing good work. Neve works with Magisters and Templars and some of them are bad... but not her friends. She only works with the good ones! The dalish form a group with Qunari and human members and they're just a diverse coalition who... love mages now (despite having kicked them out last game?? okay). Literally NO ONE is allowed to be EVEN A LITTLE morally dubious unless they'er a Bad Guy or they're fucking solas
I MISS BIOWARE GREY MORALITY! THATS HOW BAD IT IS! I FUCKING MISS IT I MISS IT I DO BRING BACK ANDERS BRING BACK ZEVRAN BRING BACK MORRIGAN AND FUCKING CULLEN AND FUCKING BLACKWALL BRING BACK ISABELA BRING BACK MERRILL AND HER DEMON SHIT! BRING IT BACK
"Oh, we're treasure hunters but we're not COLONIZERS! We don't steal cultural artifacts! We return them to the real owners, we're pirates but we're NICE AND RESPECT PRONOUNS!" CHRIST ALIVE!!!
EVERYONE WE MEET IN TEVINTER IS NICE??? EVEN THE GANG??? THE THREADS GANG IS NICE!! THEYRE SCAMMRES BUT THEYRE SO GOOD ITS A HAPPY ENEDING IF ONE OF OUR COMPANIONS RUNS THEIR GANG??? WHAT???
It was... a little bit awesome to have dorian become a violent revolution man but like????? Then Minrathous gets nuked so the game is too cowardly to even do that shit
AND THATS THE OTHER THING! This game made sure NOTHING matters choice wise! Oh, you chose to save Minranthous? It gets nuked at teh end. Oh, your choices fro previous games? Only matters if you romanced Solas but Dorian might call your Inquisitor "Amatus" in a non-cut scene dialogue. FUck you if you romanced anyone else. Southern Thedas is just.... all dead now... it's over... so any choices you mad ether eare NEVER going to be relevant. The companion personal quest choices really don'tmatter and won't matter next game.
THEY KILLED THE DNA OF A DRAGON AGE GAME! No grey morality, no meaningful choices, fuck... barely any romance once you flirt (NO POST-ENDING ROMANCE SCENE!!! EVEN MORE SHY ABOUT NUDITY!), AND NO FUCKING THEMES!
What was the theme of this game? Following Solas' story, it might be redemption or letting go of the past, I guess, but?? Do the main stories tie into that? Not really. We have ONE part of a hcapter be about Rook letting go of regrets... for deaths that jUST happened not even anything lingering.
Plots around OPPRESSION ANTI-ELF AND ANTI-MAGE DISCRIMINATION?? Gone... IN A STORY ABOUT TAKING DOWN SLAVERS... LIKE THE OG SLAVERS??? Yeah, it doesn't matter. We have idle talk about slave revolutions and that's... it?? I'm an elf in Tevniter and no one cared. What? Qunari and Elves and humans are all besties except the Antaam (some of which still become besties)... what? How do yo drop the single strongest through-line in the series?
"Oh, well it takes place in the north, it's different rfrom the south!" OKAY BUT THE FALL OUT IN THE NORTH LITERALLY NUKED THE SOUTH OUT OF EXISTENCE, I CAN'T GET SOME LINES ABOUT CULTURAL DIFFERENCES! Or like... a line referencing what happned to the southern wardens after... y'unno... the whole betrayal thing last game? That's all chill?
Varric's plot twist was fucking stupid. See: this post.
The romance with Neve was sooo promising btu felt passionless towards the end. Maybe there are better choices but... the lack ofreal closure burns. No final kiss, just a wobbling "I love you" that sounded like it came after pulling teeth like... no passion for real?
Taash's nonbinary plotline sucked. I'm sorry. It did. As a nonbinary person I can say that.
Harding was so OOC it fucking hurt.
I chose her for the mandatory death because that wasn't my harding. It's absurd that that limited the mandatory death thing to two potential characters?
Larger casts are always hard but it feel slike they rly struggled to make all characters relevant to the main plot. Taash's mom/gender struggle could've been skipped. Emmrich was amazing but felt like he was a part of an entirely separate game. Bellara's archive plot felt close-ish to teh main plot of letting go of the past but the fact that you can choose to keep it going kinda... makes it less relevant. Idk.
Besides... Lucanis... and sometimes Bellara and sometimes Harding no one feels like they're reacting to the plot. The fact that a character can die but it's skimmed over after a scene and some chats is insane. The pacing is terribleeeee like oh I can watch Harding and Taash's terrible romance (I'll say it!! Harding acts liek a doting mom and NOT in a sexy way) in dialogue across several missions in the Lighthouse but we zoom past companions dying? THe world ending??
The world was beautiful BUT THE WORLD BUILDING SUCKED! Sorry but SOOO many locations make NO sense construction wise. Why is a chest in the middle of street? Why does this bridge only appear when I have a quest? It's hard to tell when an area is inaccessible because you haven't figured out how to get there vs you literally aren't allowed to go there yet. It makes the world feel more like Oh I'm playing a game rather than you're exploring a real place. They did not navigate inaccessible areas well as a concept.
CHARACTER MOTIVATION EQUALLY AS FUCKING MESSY! I still don't know what Elgar'nan/Ghilan'nain's plan rly was even though Ghilan'nain literally wails about them. They wanted to rule, they were blight addled so I guess they're insane, but... why did they have to do it this way? What were they gonna do as rules?
Solas wanted to tear the veil down ti imprison them even harder except tearing the veil down lets out the blight except letting them out of prison also lets out the blight and don't worry when he tears the veil down he'll imprison/kill them again and make sure the blight isn't too bad even tho the veil was the only thing keeping the blight in?? And oh haha killing them lets down the veil. Also, AFTER killing htem, the veil takes a while to be torn and actually stays in place long enough for Solas to feel bad and patch it up with his own essence... okay?
The Butcher Antaam dude looooves Treviso so he accepts the blight into his body to rule it but you have to fight him.. to prove you're worthy of keeping him... from destroying Treviso? He loves it and also wants it destroyed. Again, he's blighted so he's CRAAAZY but... what?
Even with Emmrich! He's scared of becoming immortal because he's a afraid of death. So you resolve that by either pressuring him to never die by being immortal... or by not letting his friend die? Huh? We conquer fear of death by just... not letting things die? What?
Not the same thing but why would dorian stay up in the north to become an archon if he romanced an inquisitor who is fighting for their life in teh soutH? again this continuity SUCKS

Since Dragon Age: Origins the romance options for the Dragon Age series have mostly fit into 4 categories; Golden Retriever (Alistair | Anders, Sebastian | Cullen, Solas, Blackwall), Loyal Flirt (Zevran | Isabela | Dorian, Iron Bull), Mean Queen (Morrigan | Fenris | Cassandra) and Innocent Freak (Liliana | Merrill | Sera, Josephine)... I have not played through every romance so let me know if you think I’ve placed someone completely wrong.
So for Dragon Age: The Veilguard my predictions are this… Golden Retrievers; Davrin, Lucanis | Loyal Flirts; Emmerich, Lace | Mean Queen; Neve | Innocent Freaks; Taash, Bellara

Rosalie Amell x Alistair (only bc Anders isn’t an option tbh)
Pyke Brosca x Happiness
Amara Cousland x Zevran (but really Nathaniel has he been an option in Awakenings)
Brennon Cousland x Morrigan (only bc he couldn’t romance Alistair in game 😭)
Theron Mahariel x Morrigan
Aurelia Tabris x Leliana (tho she 100% would have fucked Morrigan if given the chance)
Alim Surana x Happiness (only bc he couldn’t have Alistair)
DA2
Callum Hawke x Isabela (he so wanted Sebastian tho)
Kenton Hawke x Anders
Leanore x Fenris (she really is Varric’s girl tho lbr)
Inquisition
Hava Lavellan x Solas
Claire Trevelyan x Cullen
Declan Trevelyan x Dorian
Evelyn Trevelyan x Blackwall
Everett Trevelyan x Cassandra
Maxwell Trevelyan x Iron Bull (he also really had a thing for Cullen too tbh, and for Dorian)
Persephone Trevelyan x Josephine
Veilguard
Elysia Caius x Emmrich
Naivara Valisti x Lucanis
Sterling Mercer x Lucanis
Mia Cousland x Davrin
Drakaan Laidir x Taash
Tyrion Ingellvar x Emmrich

Alessio de Riva x Lace
Xan Thorne x Lace
Malcolm Hawke x Bellara
Rowan Theirin x Neve
Arinaya Aldwir x Bellara
Others I could see
Julian Amell x Dorian
Arden Aclassi x Dorian (tho it would be a SLOW burn tbh)
Lauryl Cousland x Cullen (or Davrin too tbh, they would be cute)
Victoire Ducet x Josephine (or Lucanis or Emmrich too)
