What markers do you use and what kind paper? The textures are so Delicious

Very basic paper, actually! I find I overthink when using expensive stuff and it makes my sketches worse.

As for markers, I use Copics! Not that this is an endorsement (my first set were a very nice gift), but I have really liked using alcohol based markers over water based ones; lovely texture, good blending, and less streaking. However, the price can be *brutal*, and you can very easily get by with other markers + pencil crayons.

#ask #art faqs #fancy supplies are nice but the dont really help THAT much for art skills. Consistancy and persistance does.#I balked the first time I needed to go in to buy a few new ones to fill out my roster.#if you are going to invest; my strategy was to make those fancy new supplies a reward for drawing X amount of days in a row #that way one doesnt buy a bunch of stuff for a soon to be abandoned hobby #Art is a relatively cheap hobby at its basics. You do not need the fanciest and most expensive things.#I think watercolour is the only exception for me; that paper better be high grade. The paint mix also matters #but I digress. Buy what you need and not what you want. Save your money.#Guilt will make you stop drawing. Hoarding supplies and never using them is wasteful #when I drop money on new colours I'm going in with a list of what I want #and looking through the swatchpad for hours until i get the right colour.#cant emphasize enough how fortunate I am to have been gifted my copics. I've seen this refrain go around tumblr a lot: "Capitalism has got people treating artists and entertainers as though they should hop on their bicycles like a chained bear, the moment the audience cracks its whip." "Artists do not owe an audience anything." This is true and fair. Treating artists like art-producing machines and demanding they crank out art at a schedule amenable to you, only containing content or themes that you want, is unfair and unreasonable and dehumanizing.

However, capitalism has also got creators treating their (potential) audience like they are obligated to buy their thing as soon as or even before it comes out. In this same reblog chain, the bloggers are shaming people for not buying books at a rate that the authors would prefer. They frame it as a moral imperative to buy books before the series is finished, because the author requires it. I have also seen this regarding pre-orders: exhortations to pre-order books, especially debuts, or else you are ruining an author's career and don't care about marginalized artists. Framing not doing so as "refusing" to, as if you are required to and spitefully denying your obligation. That's also not a fair or reasonable way to treat people.

Authors are not beholden to their audience, but neither are they guaranteed one. Buying books is not the pinnacle of activism, and there is no moral failing to not purchasing a given thing.

Anyway as ever the problem is the death of mass market paperbacks, publishers demanding authors be their own marketers, and capitalism. Not other randos with a limited entertainment budget and their own reading preferences.

every time i try to explain drug prohibition to my mom it goes like this:

me: they made these class of drugs illegal because of racism and fear of abnormality first and foremost- mom: and because a lot of people were getting addicted and dying from overdoses me: no, actually- mom: but that's what happened!

#overdoses happen with prescribed drugs for many reasons... usually either through unintentional interactions with other drugs -#- or intentional suicide. overdoses w/ illegal drugs is an issue of unpredictable dosing #prior to drug prohibition addictions did occur but ... for lack of a better term... fell into the category of 'functional addict' when it-#-came to prescriptions outside of something like alcohol #prohibition turns addiction from something that can be manageable with support into 5 other maladaptive coping strategies #because being an addict to illegal drugs means having to pay a -lot- more money and also having to dodge the law while youre at it #plus the demonization of addiction itself. you're essentially creating an environment where someone HAS to go to extremes to avoid-#-getting in trouble + making it even HARDER to get support because people treat you like scum and a criminal #that aside... have you SEEN how the US government reacts to health crises???#it's never been about civilian safety. look at the track record when it came to disasters. diseases. poverty. product safety standards??#if the gov had people's safety in mind they wouldve listened when told to treat addiction as an illness and not a criminal offense

FF14 is frustrating in that there's a lot of moments where you just know that they're just delaying you.

They're stalling for time, because if you have to play for another five minutes you're going to have to go to bed instead, and so you'll have to play tomorrow too.

Which sounds... fine? Lots of games have slow moments. That in itself isn't so bad. The problem with FF14 is that they get paid when you're delayed.

Every extra day you play? Another subscription-income. Every bit of frustration of things going too slowly? An opportunity for a micro-transaction.

Not to mention when you decide to log in and can't because the servers are down for some reason. Or when you wake up to a new patch that takes way too long to download and install.

Like. It's an MMO, so this kind of stuff comes with the territory, right? And... yeah, kind of. But I'm used to seeing it in free-to-play economics. As in, those MMOs where they're tempting you with spending any money at all so that they don't have to run the game at a loss (which they can't do).

And the problem with FF14 is that I know that they're making a fucking fortune off of it. It's incredibly profitable (and they'll run it until the engine is too awkwardly old, and then discontinue it and then nothing accomplished in the game actually matters anymore, which is... sad but true for most live-services).

So, here I am, experiencing fucking micro-aggressions from a video-game constantly trying to stall me out for time. And that's... not fun.

It's a good story, it has an incredible wealth of content, it's possibly the single most linear and railroaded RPG I've ever played, and it's constantly trying to milk me for money.

I'm willing to put up with the other parts, but what the fuck is up with that last bit? I'm already fucking paying you.

The job search is sucking the soul out of me. I've started looking into various online gigs/work from home opportunities and it is a sea of slop that I'm drowning in. It pisses me off so much because like, I know I have valuable skills, I have two degrees, I speak three languages, and even after burnout I still have a decently functioning brain. I just have no idea how to apply any of it to a paid job -_-

I literally need like. 500$ a month to survive. That's it. I'd be fine doing 20 hours a week at minimum wage of my country. I just cannot find anything suitable for myself. I still have time to find something but jesus christ, it is exhausting.

#I did get to talk to a crisis counselor for an hour and it was more helpful than other hotlines I’ve used #what I rly need is for the structural issues to be solved n no counselor can do that. I face that on the other end of it as a social worker #and the interaction did feel v much like they were following a set of steps. but they personalized it enough to feel supportive #they validated me in ways I never rly get and I’m always saying I wish someone would just believe me n recognize what I go thru #we also talked abt how I’m like tired of always having to solve huge problems but that’s also smth im best at #like it sucks to have to handle all this but I’m good at handling it bc I have to be #the words they used were ‘drive’ and ‘independence’ which like lowkey meant the world even tho they don’t know me #n I told the person that. idk it didn’t make me feel better abt the situation but it made me feel better in that someone acknowledged it #n that I was even able to get a hold of someone competent n compassionate #it takes away that feeling of ‘and on top of it all I can’t seek help + a hotline will feel pointless’#idk. I may delete this and/or a bunch of my venting from today #not even as a shame thing but just.
