This Rotten Work Playlists: Daiyu Edition!

As @evelynhug0 so kindly requested, I'm going to release each of the main character playlists (and one for the main ship, Rachel and Daiyu) once a week leading up to the release of the book!

Second up is Daiyu Nightbane, our dear archrival of the main character draped in fire symbolism, severely repressed sapphic feelings, and a whole lot of trauma (aka the lesbian Baz Pitch or Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor of this story). The "fell first" part of the "she fell first, but she fell harder" equation, she is the daughter of the evil Headmaster of their magical school but had to repress that shit deep because the very person her father was replacing her with as his heir is the very Chosen One that she has a crush on, but that Chosen One is Rachel, aka a girl, and that is very much a no-go. Daiyu just wants to live a normal life, enjoying Shakespeare and coffee (her two favorite parts of the Normie world), but plenty of people see her as a bargaining chip or want her to atone for her father's actions. Oh, and Rachel would rather fight her than give her the time of day.

As Rachel describes her in Chapter 15:

"Daiyu's sitting on the window seat, staring out over the cityscape. Her hand is casually flung over her knees, mug clasped in her fingers. The streetlight outside the window throws dim, orange light over her features, illuminating the red rimming her eyes. I can smell something stiff sloshing about in that cup, something that closely resembles the bottle of vodka in my nightstand. Maybe the huangjiu, maybe something stronger. In Daiyu’s free hand, hanging by her side, tiny fire sylphs dance, little yellow flames throwing flickering shadows across her face.

Despite the solemnity in her expression, she’s so beautiful. She was called the golden light of the Rising Sun, and that title wasn’t wrong. Even without her spangled red robes or gold ruqun, even without her crown, she is captivating, elegance and allure arrayed about her. Her posture is perfect, her spine lined by power and strength, even in Normie clothes with a half-working wand."

Happy STS! Who is your favourite side character in your WIPs?

Hi Tasha, happy Saturday! I have an answer to this one ready to go :D

Davy Cramps (Loretta's little brother) has stolen my heart and soul, to the point where his presence in the plot of Book 2 of Chrissie's has gone from 'I'm not sure if I'll get the chance to mention him' to 'pivotal part of Loretta's story arc', which is great.

Davy is a trans man, and is called 'Dot' (short for Dorothy) throughout book 1, before coming out. I've modelled his transition off of real historical trans man Michael Dillon, and while it wouldn't have been easy at the time, in theory, Davy could have had access to hormones and gender affirming surgery. Between books 1 and 2, he gets a job at a Fleet Street newspaper and begins presenting as a man, taking Silas' fashionista advice to help him dress better. His troubled relationship with his mother is a catalyst for Loretta to confront her mother's high expectations in book 2. After the events of book 2, Davy meets Molly, an Irish trans woman, and the two eventually are married by a ship's captain while sailing across the Irish Sea. Davy and Molly later help Éloïse figure out their gender issues in book 3.

Because I love him so much, here's some snippets with Davy/Dot:

“What are those?” Dot asks Loretta, peering at the plus-fours. She slides into the room on mouse-quiet feet. “Boys’ clothes. We’re going out tonight.” “Dressed like a boy?” Dot says, wrinkling her nose. Dot dresses plainly herself, with nothing particularly feminine about her presentation, down to the very short hair and the flat, sensible shoes she’s wearing. “You can do that?”

And from book 2:

Every time I see Davy, he seems a little more dashing and grown-up. I still remember him pulling me aside one day, a few weeks after my wedding, to quiz me about how I dressed: back then, his attempts at dressing as a man, though spirited, had ultimately been a bit off, given he had nobody to teach him. In that moment, something switched over in my brain, and I began to see him as a little brother, rather than a little sister. He had been bashful enough to ask about how to fix one’s hair, but I carried on, discussing the proper placement of sleeve garters, and by the time I got onto the merits of a good pocket square, we were laughing like any two lads over a drink. We still have the occasional race to see who can Windsor-knot their necktie the fastest, and more often than not, his nimble fingers have me beat.
