Mohammed Sami approaches art as an allegorical representation of the striking image of conflict and violence. His paintings explore belated memories triggered by common everyday objects from when he immigrated to Sweden from his native Iraq. (His Bio)

food. consumption. relations. home.
Mohammed Sami (b. 1984, Baghdad)
'Mohammed Sami’s poignant and evocative paintings are an exploration of memory, and its vulnerability to time. Absent of people, the settings and quotidian objects in his works are nevertheless permeated with the trace of human presence; while evidence of turmoil or trauma is never directly referenced, obscure and haunting narratives are conveyed.'
Refugee Camp, 2022
Although my paintings focus on relationships, and the consumption of the self and another person therein, the work of Mohammed Sami has proven a turning point in my work. Oftentimes, I'll revert to portraying people in a painting in order to get some message across to a viewer. I have learned that space and place carries as much, if not more, weight for a viewer.
The carpets, textiles, wallpapers, furnishings of a childhood home. The swing-sets and benches, the walls and fountains of the town, the mountains and forests that seemed like a holiday.
These are much stronger images than any one person we associate with a memory. Its more universal yet uniquely individual to each person. The patch of rust on the left hand corner of your swingset made it yours. The burnt spot on the carpet from the logs crackling on the fire and the coal spluttering sparks of light made it your carpet.
My Son's Clothes, 2018
'Sami mines personal experiences from his formative years in Iraq to ground his work, but by embracing ambiguity, he creates a sense of universal familiarity.' And that's something I'd like to come forward. As Robert Rauschenberg said, 'I want you to feel comfortable.' And sometimes there is comfort in nervousness and in nostalgia.
'Negotiating the past through painting, he harnesses the metaphorical potential of different mark-making techniques to interrupt a straightforward narrative reading. Blurred objects often appear as if they are coming apart or moving across the canvas itself, suggesting gaps or slippage of memory. Sami’s compositions unfurl as cryptic vignettes of fragmented scenes, excavated from the past'

Palestine campaigns with under 1000 donations
Trying a new tactic with the fundraisers on my pinned list. These campaigns appear to gain a lot more traction when the number of donations hits a thousand, so here's a way to highlight those that could use more. These have all been vetted by Palestinians on Tumblr. Just like the main list, I'll keep you all updated with how things progress, and as always, if you can't donate, reblog.
LAST UPDATED 11/25
Under 100:
The Shehab family @fahedshehab-new 67 After raising over 78K euros, the Shehab family must start over due to issues with the previous bank account. The first campaign's organizer explains here.
The Aburass family @samerpal 84 New campaign with a new currency due to transfer issues. Samer explains the situation here.
The Alnabih family @ahmedalnabeeh234 80 After switching organizers three times, Ahmed must start from scratch. He was able to hit 1000 donations with his first attempt. Let's help get him there again!

Palestinians are not "animals."
They are not "children of darkness."
Little kids are rescuing cats and trying to comfort them when they themselves are terrified.
A doctor broke down when his father and brother came into the trauma unit.
And several of his colleagues hugged and gathered to comfort him.
Journalists are playing with babies.
Doctors are refusing to evacuate hospitals because their patients can't and refuse to leave them.
There's a little boy who gives tea to the journalists and thanks them for spreading their stories.
He's displaced at the hospital, his home is gone.
A kid was asked what he wants to be when he grows up and he said kids in Gaza don't grow up.
Kids are writing their names on their arms so they can be identified.
Momin Kireka is a Palestinian journalist who was disabled by an Israeli attack in 2008.
And despite the difficulty in moving around, he vows to continue to show the world the truth.
Awni, a young Palestinian boy has a gaming YouTube channel he loved so much.
He was killed in the bombing.
Mohammed Sami was an artist who's dream was to open an art gallery.
He was playing with the kids to raise their spirits. And the next day he was killed.
They are victims.
They are going through unimaginable horrors and still find it in their hearts to be kind.
They have hopes and dreams just like you and I.
They are people.
And they deserve to be recognised and known as such.

Save What's Left of My Family in Gaza.
In the heart of Gaza, where daily life has become a constant challenge amidst the siege and continuous bombing, we experienced unforgettable moments, filled with love and hope despite the pain. This is my story, and the story of my family, which may not differ from hundreds of other families in Gaza, but it holds special memories that will forever be etched in our minds.
Yazan, my dear nephew, was always a symbol of courage and joy in our family. Since childhood, he loved to wear his elegant blue suit, always made sure his hair was neatly styled, and smiled at the world as if to tell us that tomorrow would be better. On the day of a family member's wedding, Yazan stood proudly beside us, radiating happiness, sharing his smiles with everyone, as if he knew that these moments would be among the last memories we would have of him. Just a few days later, in a merciless airstrike, we lost Yazan. He left us while dreaming of a tomorrow filled with peace and joy, leaving behind a void and indescribable pain.
As for Suheir, my beloved niece, she is the sun that rises in our lives every day. Suheir is still with us, full of life and hope, dreaming of wearing her white dress on her special day and living a life filled with joy and success. Despite the harsh circumstances, Suheir carries the spirit of childhood and is the source of hope that we cling to amidst all this pain. Every time I see her, I feel that life still offers us a chance to witness its beauty and happiness.
We lost Yazan, but we thank God that Suheir is still with us. She is a symbol of hope and resilience. Although life has become more difficult and harsh, I believe there is always light at the end of the tunnel. We have endured these bitter experiences together as a family, but we still carry in our hearts a passion for life, seeking safety and the opportunities that can grant us a new beginning.
For this reason, I have launched a fundraising campaign to help my family escape this harsh reality. My goal is to secure a better future for those of us who remain, especially the children who deserve to live their lives without fear of bombings and airstrikes. All I ask for is a chance to give them a future filled with peace and opportunities, far from wars and destruction.
With hope and faith, I ask everyone who reads these words to contribute to our cause. Together, we can build a better future for our children, keep Yazan's memory alive as a symbol of courage and hope, and continue to support Suheir so that she can live the life she dreams of, filled with safety and happiness.
