By • Olalekan Fagbade Court summons IGP Egbetokun over detained Isese traditionalists         The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has summoned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), officials of the Kwara State Police Command and Kwara State Government, following the continued detention of some traditionalists in Kwara State. Justice Akintayo Aluko ordered them to appear and show cause why the traditionalists – Mr. Adegbola Abdulazeez. a.k.a. Tani Olorun; Madam Efunsetan Abebi Aniwura Olorisha, a.k.a. lya Osun and other traditional worshippers – should not be unconditionally released. The judge made the order while granting a motion ex parte application filed by an activist-lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje. Others affected by the order are the Registered Trustees of Council of Ulama (Islamic Clerics); Justice Salihu Mohammed (Executive Secretary of Council of Ulama); Sheikh (Dr.) Mohammad Bashir Saliu (Chief Imam of Ilorin and Chairman of Council of Ulama); Alfa Abdulsalam Baba Tonile Okuta-Agidi; Kwara State Magistrates’ Court, Ilorin, and the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ilorin, Kwara State, listed as third to nine respondents. Ogungbeje in the fundamental rights enforcement suit is seeking eight reliefs and declarations. The first to eight reliefs and declarations include an interim order restraining the respondents from “arresting, detaining, harassing, embarrassing, humiliating, interfering, disrupting, disturbing and further violating the rights to freedom of religion, thoughts and conscience of traditional religion adherents and worshippers and faithful” concerning “the planned Isese cultural festival to be celebrated in Ilorin, Kwara State or any other cultural festival” in pending the determination of the substantive suit. “An order of the court compelling the first and second respondents to provide adequate and maximum security arrangement and cover for traditional religion adherents and faithful, pursuant to the rights to freedom of ‘religion, conscience and thoughts” as it relates to the planned Isese cultural festival. “An interim order of the court compelling the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ilorin, Kwara State) to unconditionally release Mr. Adegbola Abdulazeez. a.k.a. Tani Olorun and Madam Efunsetan Abebi Aniwura Olorisha. a.k.a. lya Osun from their custody forthwith pending the hearing and determination of the originating summons. Justice Aluko held: “Upon listening to the counsel who is the applicant in this suit, reliefs four, five, six and seven are grantable, and are thereby granted.” The judge ordered that hearing notices be issued to all respondents to appear before the court and show cause while other reliefs one, two, three and eight, should not be granted. IN THESE TIMES

On Wednesday, the House faced a setback when representatives voted 206-203 to strip the House version of the War Powers Resolution of privileged status, with the help of five Democrats. Despite the loss in the House, peace activists say the Senate momentum is turning against the war—and they're determined to continue the fight to end it.

Yet the Yemenis who have been living through nearly four years of a devastating U.S.-Saudi war do not get to participate in these U.S. political debates—and are rarely heard in the American press.

The war is responsible for taking the lives of at least 57,000 people and starving to death nearly 85,000 children under the age of five, according to a conservative estimate by Save the Children. With extensive military support from the United States, the war and blockade, led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, have also led to the near collapse of the economic, health and educational sectors in Yemen, with half the population—14 millionpeople—now facing famine.

In These Times asked Yemenis in Yemen to describe to the American public their own experience of the war and analysis of the overall situation in Yemen, using a word or a sentence. Responses were overwhelming, with nearly 900 public replies to the tweet and dozens more direct messages (WARNING: graphic photos were also provided by many respondents):

Most respondents tweeted about the impact of the war on their country and its devastating impact on their daily lives, and I translated their testimonies from Arabic to English. Below are the messages of 100 Yemenis living in Yemen, in their own words.

Dr. Ammar Ali, a computer specialist living in Sana’a with his wife and two daughters, noted that “the forgotten war in Yemen must be known to all.” Mohammad Lotf, an engineer also living in Sana’a with his wife and two boys, began with, “God is with us,” a sentiment expressed by many respondents, along with his gratitude to those who speak out against the war. “Thanks for every free voice and every one with a conscience who speaks out, defends, and rejects injustice and aggression on Yemen,” he wrote.

Respondents like Yasmeen Ali, a woman living in Sana’a, directly addressed the American public: She tweeted, “Dear American people, we speak with you in the name of humanity. Help us to stop the war in Yemen. Your great country America is the one that sells weapons to the Coalition to bomb Yemen. Your great country is the one that gave the green light to strike Yemen.” Others, such as Dr. Ashraf Alkebsi, asked, “Why must the beautiful American dream turn our lives in Yemen into an ugly nightmare in the depths of hell?” Others also addressed the American public in their tweets:

Abdulghani Hussein: Your government is killing us and the price of your welfare is our blood…

Abdulsalam Alwagih: Yemenis know very well that America is the main driver and the first partner in the aggression on Yemen, and no matter how it tries to improve its image through deceit and misleading the media and calling for false peace, it will never succeed. Tell the Americans that all the values and principles they claim to uphold have been cheaply sold to the most despicable of people, the Family of Saud and the Family of Nahyan.

Imran AlKafi: The situation in Yemen is very desperate. We need help. [There’s] unemployment and poverty and disease with the siege. Yemenis are forced to live in poverty. Is there any assistance for Yemenis? Will you have mercy on them, O’ you who have blockaded them by land, sea and air? Relieve them of their pain. Relieve them of their situation. Help them.

Gamal Asad: Tell the American people that their economy is built upon the blood of the innocent people of Yemen. Does this satisfy them?!

Abu Nasser: We have no place on this planet. Please tell them if they have discovered life on another planet, allow us to live on any piece of it in peace.

Yemen: Saudi coalition clears four fuel ships to dock at Hodeidah

The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen has cleared four fuel ships to dock at Yemen’s Red Sea port of Hodeidah, two sources familiar with the matter said, after Yemen’s internationally recognised government said on Wednesday it had approved the entry of some vessels.

The move came after the Iran-aligned Houthi group, which has been battling the coalition since it intervened to stop a Houthi takeover of the country six years ago and controls most large urban centres in Yemen, said it would only agree to a Saudi ceasefire proposal if air and sea blockades are lifted.

Four vessels – including two carrying a total of 45,000 tonnes of gas oil, one loaded with 5,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas, and a fourth tanker with 22,700 tonnes of fuel oil – have received clearance from the coalition, the sources told Reuters news agency.

As of Wednesday morning, the four vessels had not yet begun moving towards Hodeidah port, which is controlled by the Houthis and is considered a lifeline for millions of Yemenis affected by the conflict.

Rights groups have criticised the Saudi-led naval and air blockade on Yemen, saying it has exacerbated one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters in a country where 80 percent of the population survives on foreign aid.

The coalition and some aid groups have accused the Houthis of obstructing aid efforts.

United Nations data showed that, despite securing UN clearance, as of March 23, a total of 14 fuel tankers were being held up by coalition warships off the port. Some have been waiting six months to dock.

On Monday, Saudi Arabia – which has been fighting the Houthis since 2015 – announced an initiative to solve the Yemeni crisis, proposing a unilateral ceasefire, the reopening of Sanaa International Airport, and the start of talks under UN auspices.

The Houthis rejected the initiative and said they would only agree to a ceasefire if the air and sea blockades imposed by the Saudi-coalition were lifted.

“The provision of fuel, food, medical and basic goods is a humanitarian and legal right for the Yemeni people,” Houthi spokesman Mohammad Abdulsalam said. “We do not accept any military or political conditions for receiving them.”

Oman mediating US-Houthi talks

The United States, which last month declared a halt to its support for the Saudi-led military coalition, welcomed the news that the ships had been cleared to enter Hodeidah.

“The free flow of fuel and other essential goods into and throughout Yemen is critical to support the delivery of humanitarian assistance and other essential activities,” US state department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Iran-aligned Houthi group has revealed it is in indirect contact with the US through Oman.

On Wednesday, the Houthis said that while they refused to hold meetings with UN envoy Martin Griffiths, messages between them and the US had been transmitted by Oman.

“The US position differs from one administration to another in terms of method, media consumption and issuance of statements,” Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam said on the group’s Al Masirah TV channel.

He added that the group has “not seen any change” from the Biden administration yet but would continue talks in pursuit of a peace deal with Saudi Arabia.

Last month, reports surfaced of the first direct meeting between Abdulsalam and US envoy to Yemen, Timothy Lenderking, in Oman’s capital Muscat.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Lenderking had pressed the Houthis to halt an offensive they had launched in Marib in Yemen’s northeast and encouraged the group to engage actively with Riyadh in virtual talks on a ceasefire.

FCT Police parade 49 suspects over alleged robbery, kidnapping

The FCT Police Command on Friday paraded 49 suspects in connection with alleged armed robbery, kidnapping, car snatching, drug peddling and frauds.   The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Bala Ciroma, said that the arrests were part of achievements made in its crime fighting efforts.   He said that the command also recovered seven firearms, two live ammunitions, 12 cars, 16 cutlasses, charms and other exhibits from the suspects.   The suspects, according to Ciroma, includes 21 armed robbers, 14 kidnappers, eight car snatchers, five drug peddlers and one fraudster.   He said that recent Joint Operation launched by the security agencies to address emerging security concerns in parts of the FCT, especially the cases of kidnapping at some rural communities had begun to yield positive resuIt.   He said that so far, a total of 10 persons suspected to be working with the syndicates behind the criminal act had been arrested around Rubochi, Kuje, Kwali and Abaji axis and were currently under investigations.     The suspected kidnapers arrested according to him were Mohammad Umar, 22; Mohammed Abdulsalam, 18; Abdullahi Bashir, 17; Abdulrazak Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim Dogosika, 20; and Idris Ori, 30.   Other arrested suspected kiddnappers were Friday Taiye, 22; Abdullahi Ibrahim, 30; Garba Abubakar, 25 and Abdullahi Mohammed, 35.   He said that sequel to the ongoing investigation into a reported kidnap incident at Asokoro on Sept. 14, Police detectives from the Command Anti-Kidnapping Squad arrested one Saadu Abubakar, 23. “The Suspect was arrested around Apo after the phone number used for the criminal act was traced to him. The Command is making concerted effort to arrest other persons involved in the criminal act.” He said that on Oct. 3 following a tip-off Police detectives from the Command‘s Anti-Kidnapping Squad arrested one Isiaku Shuiabu, 20 and Husseini Chiroma, 45, suspected to be members of a notorious kidnapping syndicate operating around Gargwada in Kuje area Council. “The suspects have giving useful information about some of their criminal activities in the axis. One single barrel dame gun and one cuttlass were recovered from the syndicate as exhibits. “In another development, Police detectives following a complaint have arrested one Opoma Terry, 24, who specialize in sending threat messages to his unsuspecting victims through electronic mail. “The suspect who operates from Lagos state sends messages to his victims threatening to assassinate or kidnap them if some specified amount of money is not paid to designated back account,” he said. The CP added that the arrest was aimed at stamping out the particular ugly trend to ensure that what occurred in other part of the country did not occur in Abuja.     “We are making progress. The joint operation were able to make significant arrest. These suspects we are parading today are under investigation and as soon as we conclude our investigation we will let you know the result of our findings.   “The operation is not a one off thing. We are continuing the operation until we are able to get rid of all hoodlums within the FCT and most especially, kidnappers that operates in difficult terrain,” he added. Indian wrestlers finish Asian Wrestling Championships with 20 medals, surpass last edition’s record of 19 medals

With a rich haul of 20 medals at the Asian Wrestling Championship 2020, Indian wrestlers broke the previous record of 16 medals that was won at the last edition of the tournament in Xi’an in China.

India occupied the top spot of the team rankings in Men’s Freestyle at 95 points, followed by Iran at 83 points and Kyrgyzstan was placed at 3rd place with 65 points.

The Indian women’s team ended up at the second spot in the team rankings with 180 points, 29 points behind Japan. The team performed much better than the last edition of Asian Championships.

GOLD FOR SUNIL KUMAR IN GRECO ROMAN AFTER 27 YEARS

On the first day of Asian Wrestling Championships at New Delhi, Sunil Kumar made India proud by winning a gold medal in Greco-Roman Wrestling after 27 years. The top honour was last won by Pappu Yadav in 48kg in 1993.

Sunil overpowered Azat Salidinov of Kyrgyzstan 5-0 in the 87 kg summit bout. In the 2019 Asian Championships at Xi’an he had to settle for silver. In the way to the final, he demolished Japan’s Takahiro Tsuruda in the quarter-final and Kazakhstan’s Azamat Kustubayev in the semi-final.  

GOLD FOR DIVYA KAKRAN IN 68KG

Divya Kakran became only the second Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships. Navjot Kaur was the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Asian Championships in 2018 in Kyrgyzstan in 65 kg.

In the final, Divya won against Naruha Matsuyuki of Japan. Before that she won all her 4 bouts against the wrestlers from Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and Japan. The competition was fought in the round-robin format.

GOLD FOR PINKI IN FREESTYLE 55KG

In her first senior Asian Championships, Pinki won gold in 55kg category of Freestyle Wrestling. She defeated Mongolian wrestler Dulguun Bolormaa by 2-1. She won her semi-final against Marina Zuyeva 6-0. After her win Pinki said, "I was a bit careful because I had injured my elbow. I did not want to aggravate since important events are lined up.”

GOLD FOR SARITA MOR IN FREESTYLE 59KG

Sarita Mor defeated Battsetseg Altantsetseg of Mongolia, the silver medallist of 2019 championship, by a close margin of 3-2 to clinch the gold.

Sarita was competing in her first Asian event since 2017 when she won silver in 58kg category.On her way to the final, she won her first two bouts by technical superiority against Madina Bakbergenova of Kazakhstan and Nazira MarsbekKyzy of Kyrgyzstan before winning 10-3 against Japan's Yuumi Kon.

GOLD FOR RAVI DAHIYA IN 57KG

Ravi Dahiya lived up to the expectation by winning gold against Hikmatullo Vohidov from Tajikistan in the 57kg category. Ravi had a comprehensive victory as he cruised past his opponent by 10-0.

SILVER FOR NIRMALA DEVI IN FREESTYLE 48KG

2010 Commonwealth Games silver medallist and 11-time senior national Champion, Nirmala Devi settled for silver medal in the 48kg category of Freestyle. In the final, she was defeated by Miho Igarashi of Japan in a closely fought battle by 3-2. Nirmala Devi is also a three-time Commonwealth Wrestling Champion.

SILVER FOR SAKSHI MALIK IN FREESTYLE 65KG

India’s Olympic bronze medallist, Sakshi Malik, settled for silver as she lost her gold-medal bout against Naomi Ruike of Japan by 0-2. Sakshi also lost her opening bout to Naomi Ruike by 1-2 margin. Ruike won silver medal in 2019.

SILVER FOR SATYWART KADIAN IN 97KG

Satywart Kadian settled for silver against two-time Under 23 World champion Mojtaba Mohammadshafie Goleij of Iran in the 97kg category. Kadian defeated Rustam Iskandari of Tajikistan in mere 45 seconds to make it to the final but lost 0-10 against Goleij. Hough he lost the final, Kadian bettered his medal colour from last year when he won bronze.

SILVER FOR GOURAV BALIYAN IN 79KG

Promising young wrestler, Gourav Baliyan lost to Arsalan Budazhapov of Kyrgyzstan in the final and settled for a silver medal in the 79 kg freestyle category at the Asian Wrestling Championship. It was a hard-fought tie where both the wrestlers had their winning chances but Arsalan emerged victorious against Baliyan by 7-5.

SILVER FOR BAJRANG PUNIA IN 65KG

India’s Wrestling star Bajrang Punia grabbed silver as he was defeated Japanese grappler Takuto Otoguro in the final. Bajrang’s defeat was heartbreaking for the home crowd as he was expected to win the gold. Earlier in the 2018 World Championship finals, Takuto Otoguro had defeated the Indian grappler as well.

SILVER FOR JITENDER KUMAR IN 74KG

Jitender Komar was up against Daniyar Kaisanov of Kazakhstan, the defending Asian Champion, in the final of 74kg Freestyle category. But he lost the gold medal bout with a scoreline of 1-3. With this win, Jitender passed the Asian Wrestling Championships test with flying colours. BRONZE FOR ARJUN HALAKURKI IN GRECO ROMAN 55KG

Arjun Halakurki settled for bronze and won the first medal for India in the tournament. Arjun defeated Dongheyok Won of South Korea 7-4 in the 55kg Greco Roman competition. At one stage of the match, Arjun was trailing 1-4. But he revived stupendously to win the bronze.

BRONZE FOR ASHU IN BRECO ROMAN 67KG

India’s two-time junior national gold medallist Ashu beat Syria’s Abdwlkarim Mohammad Alhasan in 67kg category of Greco Roman. He had a commanding performance over his opponent to win by 6-1. It was Ashu’s first medal in the senior Asian Wrestling Championship.

BRONZE FOR ADITYA KUNDU IN GRECO ROMAN 72KG

2017 Commonwealth Championship gold medallist Aditya Kundu won bronze in the 72kg of Greco Roman by defeating Nao Kusaka of Japan. Aditya was impressive in his first Asian Championship who, in his bronze medal match, defeated the 2019 Japanese champion by 8-0.

BRONZE FOR HARDEEP IN GRECO ROMAN 97KG

Hardeep beat Kyrgyzstan's Beksultan Makhamadzhanovich Makhmudov 3-1 to win another bronze medal for India. The seven times national champion from India cruisededged past Makhmudov of Kyrgyzstan by 3-1. After his win, Hardeep said to PTI, "I was worried at one point when I was supposed to be on the ground as it is a weakness that I have been working upon. In the end, I was able to maintain my cool and hold the opponent off with a strong defensive strategy."

BRONZE FOR VINESH PHOGHAT IN FREESTYLE 53KG

Asian Games gold medallist, Vinesh Phoghat settled for bronze in 53kg category of Freestyle Wrestling by defeating Thi Ly Kieu of Japan by a massive win of 10-0.

Vinesh would have liked to finish off with gold but in the quarter final she was defeated by two-time world champion Mayu Mukaida. It was her third consecutive loss to Mukaida with her previous loss ending her chance to win silver at the Wrestling World Championships 2019.

BRONZE FOR ANSHU IN FREESTYLE 57KG

Anshu of India managed to win bronze in the 57kg category by defeating Uzbekistan’s Eshmuratova with a scoreline of 4-1. Anshu won silver medal at Rome Ranking series in January 2020. In this Asian Championships, she defeated Nuraida Anarkulova of Kyrgyzstan in quarterfinals before bowing down to Olympic champion Risako Kawai in the semis.  

BRONZE FOR GURSHARAN PREET KAUR IN FREESTYLE 72KG

Gursharan Preet Kaur fairly beat her Mongolian opponent Tsevegmed Enkhbayar with a scoreline of 5-2. It was an important medal for Gursharan as, through this tournament, she made her international comeback after seven years.

BRONZE FOR RAHUL AWARE IN 61KG

World no 3 Rahul Aware won his bronze-medal match against Iranian Majid Almas Dastan by 5-2. Rahul had started his campaign with an impressive first-round win against Pakistan’s hope Muhammad Bilal.

BRONZE FOR DEEPAK PUNIA IN 86KG

Deepak Punia defeated Iraq’s Issa Abdulsalam Abdulwahhab Al Obaidi in 3 minutes by a margin of 10-0 to settle for bronze. Deepak started off well in the quarter-finals to outplay Mongolian Gankhuyag by 8-2 failed to win against Japan’s Shutaro Yamada in the semi-final.

Hunan University, in Changsha, Hunan province, is a member of Project 985 and Project 211, which are sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China aiming to become a world-class university. It is an elite university, with the Chinese Ministry of Education Class A Double First Class University status. Hunan University traces its history back to the Yuelu Academy founded in 976 AD during the Song dynasty. Shuyuan were one form of higher learning school in China; another form was government-sponsored schools including imperial central school Taixue or Guozijian and regional schools.
