In the most recent episode of a history podcast I enjoy (Lions Led By Donkeys, Ep. 339: The Great Panjandrum), one of the hosts declared that it was time for gay people to stop categorizing themselves as different kinds of animal, and start categorizing themselves as different kinds of ships, like sloops and frigates. Now, I bring this question to the largest number of gay* people who like ships I can find: all of you.

I’m almost done with Moby Dick and I think I can say very confidently that this book has been WILDLY misrepresented in popular culture by people who have probably never read it. Moby Dick is first and foremost 1) Herman Melville infodumping about whales (like linguistics professor Tolkien writing LOTR just so he could pretend to translate a language he made up) and 2) a yaoi AND yuri story. Ishmael and Queequeg are yaoi, and Ahab and the whale are yuri.

A bit of Moby-Dick oceanography context:

Up until the mid 1870s, it was generally accepted that life could not exist below a depth of 550 meters. This is why some of Ishmael's whale theories are so off and why Ahab pictures the sea floor as a vast wasteland of bones and shipwrecks. 🌊

The warehouse is menaced by a haunted forklift that keeps maiming people, but corporate won't let them get rid of it as the mechanics can never find anything wrong with it. They painted it white so people know not to use it, and locked it in an empty bay, but somehow it keeps moving to other parts of the facility when no one is watching. One day old Abe who lost a leg to the damn thing has had enough, and the night shift all get wildly stoned and commit to hunting it down and destroying it, somewhere in the sea of unlit pallets.

Reading Moby Dick and the whole opening is wild. "I'm Ishmael. Sometimes being a person makes me want to scream, so whenever I feel I can't hold it in anymore I run to the nearest shipyard and sign up for some hard manual labour on a random ass boat where nobody cares who I am. After a few months I'll settle down and get back to business. Everyone does this sometimes, it's probably normal. Anyhow, I'm at the pier."
