Being a single mom of three is hard.
Especially when they either don't take their safety seriously enough, believe their powers should make them capable of handling it or worst of all, both.
Context: This is Erin Liung. For those who've read N2CatS, you may have heard of her as Blair's legal guardian/adoptive mother. The guy on the left is her biological son, Vincent. Neither have officially appeared in that fic, just cameo'd in Volpino's illusion flashbacks. Vincent does not get a Miraculous at any point so he's included here.
Edit: for further context on how Vincent counts here despite not having a Miraculous... this guy is crazy enough to run over an akuma to protect his adoptive twins (happened in the episode Ego Split). What a maniac.

AU where the akumas are self aware and I mean looney toons levels of self aware. Everyone aside from the akumas themselves don't know what the hell they're talking about or why they act like that and the person goes back to normal after being de-akumatized.
Except for Vincent Aza. He's always known.

People legit called Marinette a hypocrite when she called Vincent's obsession with Jagged creepy cuz the dude was following Jagged everywhere and taking pictures of him and harassing him and got akumatized to do whatever the fuck he wanted to do with Jagged when they were on that bed and then Marinette saw this guy's entire room covered in Jagged's posters and pictures Vincent took when he spied on him and then y'all say it's the same as Marinette having Adrien's magazine cutouts on her board yeah lol

BSD!OC! Vincent Marco Allan P3
-:Vincent vs Tarou:-
He has Kit deliver a mysterious letter at the Agency's office door addressed to 'The World's Most Greatest Detective'
He waits in anticipation for Edogawa's arrival at the book store
At this location Tarou has to solve a Rune puzzle to enter a room and they finally meet Vincent, who struggles to monolog only to give up and hand them a script
The rest of this scene goes similar to cannon
-
Kagami and Tarou get trapped in his fantasy mystery novel
Louisa wrote it out for him
Tarou is a traveling detective with tracker magic that manifests as discs
Kagami is a doctor with minor healing magic and a shield which she can use as a catalyst
Vincent is the 'magic-less' bartender and murderer with teleportation magic
At least once, he chuckles to himself while facing away from the investigation, while behind the bar
Still a locked room mystery with multiple deaths throughout the novel, including the doctor
Because of his lack of glasses, Tarou often misses things, showing that he has an actual need for them
The Ranpo-Glasses scene is replaced with Tarou's Butterfly Tie-Clip
During his time without his Tie-Clip, Tarou will often disassociate and loose himself in the character and therefore do things he would never normally do in the characters name, until Kagami's character's death
Upon receiving Kagami's butterfly ordainment, he snaps back into himself with his green eyes and solves the mystery the 'Tarou way'
Solveing the mystery involves outside knowledge from the Protagonist when they were a reader in the cursed library
--
Despite the two's rivalry, they had only recently met earlier in the year when Vincent was a guest author at Tarou's middle school
His signature has a butterfly wing pattern and he owns a purple butterfly bookmark
He's never confirmed why he likes them so much
Vincent had signed some of the student's/faculty's books that day, even Tarou's
For him, the Mouse Miraculous disguises as a Smooth Maroon gem japanese coin pendant
-
During the Gifted War, the fight against Kamui is replaced with Nagisa
Tarou (as Syunnosuke) afterwards finds Atsushi and calls him out on being the traitor, only to get killed afterwards
Despite having an escape plan with Vincent, Atsushi stops holding back and kills Tarou in an instant, leaving Vincent too terrified to do or say anything
Atsushi then steals the Snake Miraculous for his Uncle Naoto
-
After Tarou's death, he keeps and wears Tarou's butterfly tie-clip on his eventual button-up sweater
By the time Vincent makes it home after his death, he finds a note from Louisa explaining that she had to flee, the rats will target her against him otherwise
(Shujin) (Butterfly Tie-Clip)
Vincent Marco Allan (Persona 5/BSD)

While "the network wants an episodic kids show, the authors want an epic dark complicated narrative" would explain A LOT about ML's problems, I'd still like to note that there are kids' shows that can do both, going full range from "mostly episodic with a sprinkle of narrative" (Kim Possible, MLP), to "heavily narrative but with episodic breather/filler episodes" (Gravity Falls, WITCH, the Owl House), with many variants in-between.
Even the transition from "fully episodic" to "more narratively-connected" that ML attempted to do can be done successfully - the aforementioned Gravity Falls and WITCH were more episodic in season 1 and more narratively driven in season 2.
However, I'd say there are a few other key problems that can be inferred from what we have:
The show tries too many things at once - as you have pointed out repeatedly. Magical girl and rom-com, single-hero, duo and team stories, wacky comedy and serious trauma, even trying to give several characters a redemption and a damnation arc at the same time (and failing with either). Apparently, it's not just TF vs writers: it's writers severely disagreeing with each other (see Thomas and Vincent's opinions on Chloe), and also trying to one-up the fans. Also, simply thinking too much of the work, which leads us to...
ML's total lack of self-awareness. Another famous case of a show that was almost entirely episodic is Phineas and Ferb. They use the same formula (the brothers build, Candace busts, Doof makes an Inator and is thwarted by Perry) over and over for four seasons. And by mid-season 1, the authors have been making fun of the structure, lampshading it, spoofing and twisting it, playing with "What if" episodes and never taking itself too seriously. When ML tries to be self-aware, it becomes either insulting to the fans (Animaestro), horrifically dark (Chat Blanc) or plain cringe (Simpleman). This is exacerbated by Astruc's arrogance and inability to ignore critics.
Is it possible to make a highly complex, genre-busting, yet kid-friendly story and succeed? Yes. But it needs to be better thought-out - if not from the start, then at the moment the network allows one to deviate from the formula.
And if all else fails and the story becomes too complicated and too repetitive at the same time... Well, self-awareness and the ability to make fun of one's own work can turn a sad mess into a hilariously fun disaster.
P. S. Love your posts as always, you are the main reason I'm still in the fandom!
Thank you for the kind words! I'm so glad that you're enjoying my stuff and I agree with all the things you brought up.
A big part of the reason that Miraculous is so fascinating to me is that there ISN'T a single cause of the issues. There are so many valid ways to discuss the show's problems. It's a masterclass in bad writing and what not to do!
It's why I'm able to run this blog. If it was as simple as, "here's the single reason why it's bad and here's how you fix that" or if the show never had any potential, then there wouldn't be much to talk about. But it did have potential and there is no single reason why it's bad. The causes are multitudinous as are the potential fixes! It feels like investigating some complex wreckage or an elaborate murder mystery in order to understand what the hell happened, which is really fun if you like talking about writing.
I find it much harder to discuss writing in an informative way if you only have good examples to draw from because that path risks stifling creativity. Just because a popular story did a thing well doesn't mean that story showed us the only way to do the things or even the best way to do the thing, but that's often the lesson people seem to learn. They see a thing that they like or even just a thing that audiences liked and want to copy it without understanding the full nuance of why they liked it.
A great example of this is Zuko from Avatar the Last Airbender. He was such a well-written and popular character that all these properties started copying him even though the properties in question did NOT have a setup that worked for a Zuko. Praising Zuko won't really tell you all the ways that Zuko could have failed. Meanwhile, a case study of Chloe vs Zuko or even just a general discussion of Chloe lets you actually talk about the various styles of redemption arc and what you have to do to make them feel real. It's also far more interesting than talking how Zuko could have failed because Zuko didn't fail so why are we even talking about this? It's also far more interesting than talking about a bunch of properties that did redemption arcs well because that would require you to have seen all of those properties. But Chloe is from a single property and she did fail and people understandably have wildly different feelings about what the failure was because the writing was so bad, which means that digging into her writing is way more likely to hold your interest and teach you something.
This gif really does sum it up perfectly:
Tumblr media
[Image description: scene from the movie Knives Out where the detective Benoit Blanc exclaims "It makes no damn sense! It compels me though" to explain his feelings on an ongoing murder mystery that he's trying to solve]
As does the old adage, "failure is the greatest teacher." Of course, no one ever said that it had to be your failure!

Done with Charles aka pink doggo's route, finally.
Okay so basically...
The first half is like Vlad-- The guy meets MC somewhere outside the mansion and he spends time with her as a friend hiding the identity as a vampire
And the second half is JUST LIKE Will
It turns out the guy is seriously unhinged inside with a mask on the outside
He falls for MC but doesn't think himself is the right one to be with her, and tries to push her away with harsh words "for her sake"
MC is surprisingly not dumb(I mean it, she actually knows how to use her brain in these two routes), doesn't lose hope and wants to save the guy anyway
Then in the climax where the CG appears, the guy is STABBED OF HIS OWN WILL in the DAMN CHURCH
Do these reddish haired ones share something in common?? I'm sure they do
The thing is Will is my fav followed by Vlad the close second
And the mix of those two? There's no single reason not to put him in one of my best boys
Guess I'm into either drama level max or innocent madness
Side note: In this route Faust was a very good sidekick. Felt like trying his route again but weelll...? And why on earth Vlad was depicted like the sad 2nd ML aahhh I felt like crying
So now my ranking would be like
1 Will 2 Vlad 3 Dazai/Charles tie 4 Arthur 5 Mozart 6 Issac 7 Leo 8 Napo 9 Jean 10 Theo 11 Vincent 12 Sebas 13 Comte 14 Faust
So among the "later routes" the half are in the top tier and the other half are stuck in the bottom... which looks quite weird
I like later routes much better in IkeVamp cuz I'm sick of the plot MC is kidnapped by a random stranger then the LI and this so-called villain guy fight with some forced "enemy" narratives
The only reason that I put some in the bottom is either the stories were too boring and unnatural(Sebas and Comte) or it was just plain annoying for me from the start(Faust)
So why did this turn out to be so long? Dunno if anybody did actually read this far but thank you anyways :)

Hiii!
I'm a huge fan, and eternally grateful to you for leading me to His Valet 🙏🏻
I'm just coming off a serious Lisa Kleypas high and i'm not sure where to go next. I tend to like my romance angsty and historical. What would you suggest?
Thank you for everything you do!
Omg no need to thank me! 'Tis a fun hobby for me (and who knows, maybe eventually I'll publish a book or get into book marketing... the first is a dream, the second possibly a more practical dream given my professional background lol).
Needless to say, if you haven't read any other LaViolette books, she's probably one of my favorite Kleypas readalikes. Less Victorian Decadence (though they're amazing) because of the super high heat and queerness, plus the tendency towards non-monogamy or at least group shenanigans, but her other books like the Bellamys ESPECIALLY read like higher heat Kleypas to me a lot of the time. You probably know this—but the Bellamys give me "edgier Hathaways" vibes and they're all good so far (though Hyacinth and Selina particularly).
Primo historical angst who I consider from a similar like... field? As Kleypas? Is of course Elizabeth Hoyt. All of her books are solid to incredible, and Maiden Lane is just one of those series that I feel EVERY historical romance fan should read. Imo, they're best read in order (though full disclosure, I've yet to read book 1 even though I own it, and I'm kind of holding off because once I read it I'm done with ML and like Kleypas she hasn't published in a while...) but my top five would be Scandalous Desires (Irish river pirate Charming Mickey/moralistic Quaker widow Silence), Thief of Shadows (one of my all time favorites, virgin hero Winter with society widow Isabel), Duke of Midnight (craziest duke ever, Duke Batman Maximus/waaaay too smart for him Artemis), Dearest Rogue (the jaded former man of the law James with the woman he's guarding, Phoebe, who happens to be blind), and Sweetest Scoundrel (ultimate "rogue on the outside sweetheart on the inside" Asa and the uptight but secretly traumatized Eve).
Lorraine Heath, but of course! Just recommended her London's Greatest Lovers trilogy (available for $1.99 as a kindle bundle) and ESPECIALLY Waking Up With the Duke, but she honestly has several I would consider masterpieces/top favorites. Besides that one, I'd especially recommend:
--The Earl Takes All, a modern classic, also known as Gorilla Twins, one of the wildest books I've ever read
--When the Duke Was Wicked, aka (around these parts) (my blog, nowhere else) Rum on Lips, a beautiful widower rake book
--Between the Devil and Desire, the Jack Dodger and Olivia book, a FABULOUS interclass romance (though he's rich, don't forget it) with a hero who is perrrrrfect for Derek Craven girlies (Lovingdon from the above book is a little more similar to Sebastian, if Sebastian was actually terminally depressed and totally in denial about how hard he's falling for HIS redheaded heroine... I actually don't think St. Vincent really was that hard on the denial front once he was in it for real)
Joanna Shupe, of course! Her Fifth Avenue Rebels series is my favorite. I'd say she generally goes a *little* lighter on the angst than Kleypas, but it really depends on the book and they always have angst of some kind, and often a lot of groveling. I'd argue that her angstiest book that I've read is The Duke Gets Even, another all time favorite of mine. It's really pretty daring for the genre, imo, re: the source of the angst. Buuuut I would also recommend reading the series up to that in order for MAX gutpunch, and all the books are good to great.
I haven't read as much Jeannie Lin as I should have by now (just two books so far) but OOOOH The Dragon and The Pearl is so good. So angsty. There's such an anguished love confession in this one. Shoot it into my veins.
Sarah MacLean is definitely someone you can tell has been influenced by Lisa, and she writes great angst. My angst favorites of hers are A Rogue by Any Other Name and Day of the Duchess (the latter of which is another daring one).
Monica McCarty writes great angst—her Highland Guard series is medieval, but it definitely has the Kleypas-type heroes. And you get a LOT of like... "he doesn't love me" angst, some "we're on opposite sides" angst, some "we have beef and it still isn't over" angst throughout the series, which is really pretty consistent (I say as someone who still has a few books left).
Jennifer Ashley's Mackenzie brothers books are SINGULARLY angsty in the best way, and give big Kleypas vibes to me. The Duke's Perfect Wife is an all time favorite of mine, made me cry, and is best read after the first three in order, but they're ALL great.
And I mean... I have to recommend Princess by Gaelen Foley, a recent favorite of mine that is SOOOOO deliciously angsty. The longing! The betrayal! The hero wants to get himself killed, assassinating Napoleon FOR HER (and also because he highkey hates himself). The Duke is also super good, and VERY angsty.

Vincent Aza is creepy without the Akuma.
Fang's very Doglike.
I also didn't rememher that Chatdrien gets trapped twice.
I did remember the whole "cataclysming a pocket dimension" thing, though.

BSD!OC! Vincent Marco Allan P2
Despite this, he is quite clever and smart, easily able to inconvenience others with his evil deeds
He called Tarou Edogawa Oni-chan, at first without knowing the meaning, then out of respect, this often gives Tarou an ego boost
He, Kyouba and Tarou ended up best friends /rivals
He likes Carrots and Carrot Cake
Never hurt his students or you'll get the book
Often hides his face behind a book, often being his Notebook
Because of him, people believe that Shujin Academy's library is cursed or haunted
People often disappear within
He is very protective over his students, and so are they of him
The principal knows he's a criminal but when they tried to fire him, the students rioted
He was the closest with the volleyball team, later getting pushed away by Kamoshida
Back in the Haikyuu Arc, students would threaten others with books
He is often found hiding behind his desk
He used to often hide under Coach Ukai's coat, Ukai later gifted it to him, replacing his red and white one with a red and yellow one
He loves watching Shujin's Volleyball matches, however that was ruined by Kamoshida's treatment years later
If a student is feeling down, then they'll find their favorite book on their desk
But if a student is being bad, they would find their least favorite
This even includes textbooks
He gives his favorite students one of his own, written by Kyouba or Louisa, so they can escape reality sometimes
He sometimes substitutes for History, he used to use his Ability so they could learn interactively
He often threatened Tsukishima with Attack on Titan
Like his son, he is also afraid of heights
He extremely hates Atsushi Hinata because of his best friend's murder
Vincent feeds his Kwami, Mullo, Cheese Cake
He adopted a 2 year old Edgar when he was 21
His wife is used to both her husband and son hiding in books all day, easily being the one to coax them out
Despite being ecstatic of his son's friendship with Ranpo Edogawa, he can't bring himself to face Ranpo after what happened to the older Edogawa
At first, Vincent had Ukai told his name was Marco, this resulted in chaos whenever Ukai was trying to find him with the student's shouting back 'POLO!'
Louisa owns a bookstore which Vincent often helps out at, she brought it so Vincent could easily sell his books in Japan
[Continued in P3]
