Another most loved activity and the most brain-stormed activity that we used to do back in school was compiling tracks for mixed tapes. It was routine ritual after every 4-6 months and we dared not disrespect it. From Frozen (Madonna) to Cotton-Eyed Joe, my mixed tape selection carefully included all possible genres I was aware of at that time. As we combined the lists as group effort, my personal list would further get refined before handing over to Virgin Track records at Fortress Stadium (yes, they only makers of quality mixed tapes at that time) The 80’s and 90’s most definitely saw music reach it’s boom in terms of number of records produced, albums released, concerts performed, charts, music shows and what not. Hello Y'all, sometime in the late 80's / early 90's I began making mixed tapes of the Funk 45s I was picking up. At the time it was becoming apparent that there were some deep Funk 45s recorded in every corner of the country. A friend already had the comps that came out in the early 80's so I had a good basis for digging using them as checklists. One of the things I love is that some of these earliest cuts are still cheapies. Others I have never even seen a copy of, B'wana "Chapumbambe" for example. A few things eventually pushed it into overdrive; Mr. Fine Wine's WFMU show, Across 110th St on WKCR, meeting Phillip Lehman who became a regular at the shop, the guys at A1 (Aldo and Stephen), and of course regular visits to the Roosevelt and other record shows. One of the best digging sessions happened over a few weeks when Larry The Junk Man got in about 100 crates of unsleeved 45s. Condition varied but most were VG+ or better. I marked each crate I completed before Larry moved them to the store. The Cold Grits and Sons Of Darkness came from there.
