What’s In a Name? Part 2

Not as long today since I’ve been adding so many names to the meta list (I have 70ish years of names still to go through as I’ve only gone back as far as the 1960s at the moment). Since last time was a bit more complicated today we’ll look at kanji that basically have one meaning and one meaning only (no one gets confused!) Also, all of the examples from Gion Kobu can be found in the meta list (yay!). So, let’s look at some of the more commonly used kanji! Ha: 葉 Prefix of Suffix: Suffix Old Meaning: A Leaf or Foliage New (Standardized) Meaning: A Leaf Found In: Gion Kobu, Kamishichiken, and Pontocho While it can be scattered around various hanamachi, Gion Kobu is known for its continuous -ha line of maiko and geiko that can be traced back at least 100 years! It’s a simple kanji with a simple meaning! Examples: 竹葉 Takeha (Gion Kobu): “Bamboo Leaf” 梅葉 Umeha (Kamishichiken): “Plum Leaf” もみ葉 Momiha (Pontocho): “Turning (Fall Color) Maple Leaf” or “Red Leaf” as it can be a stand in for “紅葉” which can be pronounced as “momiji” (changing maple leaves) or, read as the literal kanji (red leaf). Either way, the name means the same thing!  Na: 菜 Prefix or Suffix: Both Old Meaning: Vegetable or Salad Greens New (Standardized) Meaning: Vegetable or Salad Greens Found In: Gion Kobu, Miyagawa Cho, Pontocho, and Gion Higashi Slightly tricky since both “ha” (葉) and “na” (菜) look very similar and, in a way, share a bit of common meaning. To tell the two apart when it comes to translation “ha” refers to leaves of trees or plants that grow tall while “na” is for leaves or plants that are edible and grown close to the ground. Examples: 菜摘子 Natsuko (Gion Kobu): “Child Who Picks Vegetables”  市奈菜 Ichinana (Pontocho): “Your First Vegetables”, kinda gets tricky when “奈” gets added as both kanji are used for the same pronunciation.  とし夏菜 Toshikana (Miyagawa Cho):”Year of Summer Vegetables” or “Town of Summer Vegetables”, this one seems hard, but is actually easy since the kanji go well together and there aren’t too many different readings for “とし”. 叶菜 Kanona (Gion Higashi): “Granter of Vegetables”, the “kano” (叶) kanji is one of seeing your dreams come true or wishes fulfilled, but its basic meaning is “to grant” or “to answer”. This combination could also be translated as “The Fruits (or, in this case, Vegetables) of [Your] Labor” Ko: 子 Prefix or Suffix: Both Old Meaning: Child New (Standardized) Meaning: Child Found In: All 5 Hanamachi Extremely common kanji that is still very common in Japanese girl’s names today and many geimei of the karyukai. 叶子 Kanako (Miyagawa Cho): “Child of Wishes” 駒子 Komako (Gion Higashi): “Horse Child” (a foal) or “Child of Horses”, both bring about the image of a young horse (or a young girl with a horse) running and playing in wide open fields. 市子 Ichiko (Pontocho): “First Child”, the most precious name of the Ichi- line of Pontocho as it was the original name of the line’s founder. It is only bestowed upon individuals who are excellent dancers. The current Ichiko debuted back in the mid 1950s and is one of Kyoto’s greatest dancers. 尚子 Naoko (Kamishichiken): “Greater Child” or “Child With More to Come”, the “尚” kanji evokes a sense of the future and the greatness that will come with it. 有佳子 Yukako (Gion Kobu): “Child Who Possesses Excellence”

I still find it amusing how Gege says Gojo’s first impression of Geto in the character book is: bangs.

Then he deliberately lumps Miwa and Geto together as the most popular students (because they’re nice and I guess, bangs).

And if Gege did really have a say in Jujutsu sanpo scenes, that one with Gojo takes the cake, lol.

I just want them to hang out.. Kokichi and Arata are there too, I love them all.... but I got tired. im so sorry, ily..... Kokichi took the photo and Arata is moral support at a distance.

Todo is the dude who's most likely a public disturbance, but only when there's Takada merch involved or the scene is getting too calm. other than that, he's trying to beat away boredom through other means than literally beating someone up.

Miwa living her life but gets dragged into everything. It's okay, though! She's documenting everything and making memories!! There's a soft spot in her for these types of calm moments where no one is at each other's throats..!

Momo also living her life² but she's amused with everything. She knows this group is chaotic as fuck, so she sits back and enjoys the show. Though she'll make Kokichi convince Noritoshi to buy her a cute thing that caught her eye!

Noritoshi is the mom of the group... making sure everyone doesn't blow their money on stupid shit, but also reluctantly folding and spending his own for them. Also makes sure no one gets arrested or dies. The others would show him a dick shaped mug or smth for his reaction.

Mai is similar to Momo, but she'll get her hands dirty. I feel like she's the one pointing out Takada merch to Todo, so he freaks out and embarrasses the group. Though if it goes for too long, she gets embarrassed as well. other than that, she's minding her own business shopping for things that catch her eye. maybe buys a cactus.

Kokichi is enjoying the presence of everybody together. whether it be trying to hold Todo back from mauling a guy or eating at the food court, hes vibing. He's another one who people show things for his reaction. Also takes photos, he looks at them fondly when the day is over.

Arata is fighting for his life while also having fun. Hes testing the waters with what he can get away with when dealing with Noritoshi and Todo, but immediately backing down and apologizing when he gets a glare. In my heart, Arata is trying to wingman for Kokichi in the most obnoxiously obvious way.

Why only Todo-senpai and Nitta-kun? I reasoned there's a 99% chance that Todo won't die in Shibuya. Same for Nitta if he accompanied Todo. His technique would be useful, too— And me?! Am I useless? The situation isn't even on that scale anymore. It wasn't just you. It was Mai, Kamo, Nishimiya, and Utahime, too. I took steps to make sure you all were on a mission south of Kyoto on the 31st. Why didn't you say anything to us? Why didn't you ask us for help? Aren't we friends? Is it because... I'm weak? No. I'm the one who was weak. I went about it the wrong way because I was weak, and I couldn't even see that mistake through because I was weak. There was this girl I loved. And I didn't care what happened to the world as long as I could be at her side and protect her. Even if that girl didn't want me to be the one to protect her.
